Ten-Year Loyal Dog’s Road to Chasing Her Wife (GL) - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Qiao Wan immediately showed a look of surprise: “You want to listen to music with me, are you sure?”
Watching for the teacher is usually only a task for the eyes; the ears can still relax a bit. However, Qiao Wan knew her own taste in music meant many people wouldn’t like the songs she liked. It wasn’t that she hadn’t tried to recommend (“Amway”) the songs she loved to others, but she had always failed.
And now Qiao Mo was actually coming forward to ask for a recommendation? She was so excited her hands shook slightly: “If you really want to listen, once you’re on my pirate ship, you can’t get off, or else I’ll still have to hit your palm.” As she spoke, Qiao Wan could already not wait to put one earphone into Qiao Mo’s hand. “Hurry, put it on.”
She was already somewhat impatient to bring out some good stuff for Qiao Mo to hear.
To outsiders, Qiao Wan appeared cold, withdrawing into her own small world, disliking conversation, and showing no particular hobbies. They always saw her holding her small MP3 listening to music, but they just didn’t know what songs she was listening to.
That was the year 2013; the momentum of PSY’s “Gangnam Style” was still there. Basically everyone could hum a few lines, and those with particularly coordinated limbs could even perform an improvised segment Yuan Tianci could. Then, for some reason, rumors began to spread among the students that Qiao Wan could too, as if the School Beauty and School Hunk were the same person, sharing even the exact same skills.
Qiao Mo originally thought Qiao Wan could too, until she listened until the end of class and didn’t hear a single song with a style similar to “Gangnam Style.” Qiao Mo began to realize she was wrong to a ridiculous degree in Qiao Wan’s playlist, there were rarely even any songs by popular domestic idol singers. Most were pure instrumentals, “Gu-feng” (ancient style) songs, and English songs from Europe and America. The styles were ever-changing, but there simply weren’t any common Chinese songs.
During the process, Qiao Wan kept cautiously peering at her with her eyes, as if wanting to see feedback on her face. “Is it okay?”
At this moment, the two of them were wearing the same pair of earphones, looking extremely intimate. Usually, only good friends would get such treatment. Normally, Qiao Wan would definitely not allow others to use the same pair of earphones to listen to music with her, but right now she really wanted to find someone like-minded in the new class, to the point of being desperate enough not to care about anything else.
She had been negated and rejected too many times; many people couldn’t understand her. Yet now, she inexplicably felt that Qiao Mo perhaps could. So she was waiting for a definite reply.
“What kind of answer do you want to hear? The truth, or flattery?” The range of Qiao Mo’s movements was always small; she just tilted her head slightly like that, as if she had only caught a glimpse in Qiao Wan’s direction by chance, and quickly turned her head back.
“The truth.” Hearing this, Qiao Wan already felt a bit angry. This kind of person was truly annoying; why is flattery needed between classmates, and for what? In the future, after graduating high school, within less than a year, all feelings will have faded, okay? “If you can’t accept it, then don’t force yourself. One man’s honey is another man’s poison. Others might not necessarily like the things I like; I understand the logic. Even if you told me to my face that the song I like most isn’t good, I could understand, but I don’t want to hear you say that.”
She pursed her lips, swallowing the sentence “otherwise I’m going to hit someone.”
Mother said, a lady cannot use her hands.
Qiao Mo replied: “I like it very much.” After a pause, Qiao Mo added: “If you were to go on and ask me what the flattering answer is, it would still be ‘I like it very much.’ This is the honest truth from the bottom of my heart; it won’t change because of what you want to hear. Thank you for the ‘treat’; I really like these songs. Could I trouble you to write a song list for me?”
Qiao Wan understood that what Qiao Mo called a “treat” referred to those songs she loved most. Regardless of whether Qiao Mo’s words were true, as long as someone gave affirmation, Qiao Wan was already very happy. Among so many people she had met, Qiao Mo was actually the first willing to accept her recommendation.
Immediately she became happy: “I can do that! After class, I’ll write all those songs out for you.”
“Especially the second one.”
Qiao Wan’s heart skipped a beat: “What about it?”
The second song was an English song, and it happened to be Qiao Wan’s absolute favorite, both for the melody and the lyrics.
Qiao Mo turned her head and stared seriously into her eyes, saying: “I want something just like this.”
She was so serious that for a moment Qiao Wan thought this ugly desk mate wanted her. According to her English level, it wasn’t hard to understand that this English sentence meant “I only want these things,” which could be interpreted as Qiao Mo wanting “this kind of song.” But this English sentence was also a part of the song; before this line, there was a line “somebody I can kiss.”
“I want something just like this” was the main hook of the song and was sung repeatedly, but “somebody I can kiss” was not. Qiao Wan couldn’t be sure if Qiao Mo had heard that there was such a line in the song.
But she indeed had a moment of a blushing and racing heart, as if she had thought of something else. Then she followed the momentum and dazed out for a while, until she was nudged by Qiao Mo’s elbow. She reacted quickly, taking off the earphones and hiding them in the rolled corner of her skirt hem. Just as she finished hiding them, she saw the head teacher pass by with a stiff face.
Once the teacher’s figure completely disappeared past the front door of the classroom, Qiao Wan breathed a sigh of relief and said: “That was close, thanks.”
If Qiao Mo hadn’t reminded her just now, the MP3 would likely have been confiscated. Qiao Wan’s financial power wasn’t to the point where she couldn’t afford a new one; it was just that this one had a different meaning to her, so over the years she had been reluctant to replace it, and it had become the item with the most “historical atmosphere” around Qiao Wan.
There are always some things whose status is different from others, even if there might be a huge gap in their value. Qiao Mo could understand, because she herself had cherished items, such as the green jade bracelet she wore on her hand; it was already rare for students to wear bracelets, let alone a jade one.
In her impression, this kind of thing was generally worn by middle-aged women.
Qiao Mo also liked those colorful bracelets; she had many unique-looking bracelets herself, but she had never worn them out. Since junior high, what had accompanied her was this emerald jade bracelet.
Truthfully, this bracelet was quite beautiful. Some people would be curious and ask Qiao Mo to take it off to let them try it on, but without exception, no one was able to wear it. As a girl over 1.6 meters tall, Qiao Mo’s wrist was actually thin to an excessive degree, practically like a child’s wrist; the wrist of any peer would be thicker than hers.
In any case, no one could ever put on Qiao Mo’s bracelet, so they joked that it was simply Cinderella’s exclusive glass slipper.
Qiao Mo neither admitted nor denied it. That bracelet that no one else could wear was easily slid back onto her wrist by her with a gentle motion. That faint streak of green was soul-stirring, as if one could see the brilliance flowing within.
“It is perhaps very important to you,” Qiao Mo said with a slight smile. “Thank you for sharing these songs you like with me today; they are very beautiful.”
“I have many more beautiful songs!” In Qiao Wan’s eyes, there also seemed to be brilliance flowing. This made Qiao Mo unable to resist stealing a glance at the emerald bracelet on her left wrist, a pair of eyes as beautiful as emeralds. “Will you listen to me in the future too?”
“In the future?” Qiao Mo pondered for a moment. Qiao Wan perhaps wasn’t clear on what kind of invitation she had issued. But Qiao Mo didn’t plan on leaving time for Qiao Wan to be clear, so she quickly squinted her eyes and said: “Sure.”
While she spoke, her nose felt a bit itchy, so she raised her left hand to wipe it. Qiao Wan’s eyes were naturally attracted by the bracelet on her wrist: “This bracelet… is very beautiful. Can I take a look?”
“You can,” Qiao Mo readily allowed. But before she could take the bracelet off, the female monitor Gongxi Bitong entered through the door they actually hadn’t noticed when Gongxi Bitong had been called out by the head teacher. Thinking back now really felt like their hair was standing on end; if they had been caught by the head teacher talking during morning reading, they would have had to stand through the upcoming English class.
Gongxi Bitong wasn’t considered ugly; she was clean and elegant, it was just that she liked to wear a stiff face all day, making her look not easy to approach this point looked exactly the same as the head teacher. Among the two monitors, the male monitor Yuan Tianci was easy to talk to, while the female monitor Gongxi Bitong was just and selfless, as if the personalities of these two people were swapped. “I’ll take five minutes of everyone’s time to say a few things.”
Because Gongxi Bitong usually appeared serious, her words carried considerable weight. As soon as she spoke, the buzzing talk in the class stopped immediately. Fifty-nine pairs of eyes looked at her in unison, waiting for her to speak.
“It’s about the matter of classmate Xia Hanyin.”
As soon as she said that, Qiao Mo saw Xia Hanyin’s face immediately turn a watery green, as if she were about to cry out loud. Meanwhile, the students below began whispering again; the voices were too small to hear what was being said, but they weren’t good words in the end. Consequently, Xia Hanyin’s face turned even greener.
“The teacher has already communicated with the discipline monitor of the class next door. Your lateness record this time is canceled, and she has secured a benefit for every student in our class; everyone can be late once per semester without being recorded. Correspondingly, their class also has this benefit. Where is our class’s discipline monitor?”
“Here.”
Someone responded from a corner, so Gongxi Bitong said: “You should also note that they likewise can have one unrecorded lateness; don’t be too harsh when recording.”
“Okay,” the discipline monitor agreed.
“Crazy,” Qiao Wan said with a cold face. “Changing the class rules because of one student like this. As a student, isn’t arriving at school on time a duty one should fulfill? Being late and yet making it sound like she’s so aggrieved. Hmph.”
Qiao Mo squeezed her hand, hinting that Xia Hanyin was not far away and telling her to be cautious in her speech.
Qiao Wan, however, flung her hand away. “I’m not wrong. What necessity is there to change the rules for a student like that? She’s late and she’s right?”
She didn’t speak in a small voice; half the class heard her. Xia Hanyin, who was close by, naturally heard her too, and let out a “waa” as she burst into tears: “What is wrong with you! If I get recorded late one more time, my parents will be notified, do you know that! You have no sympathy at all, you’re too much!”
