Ten-Year Loyal Dog’s Road to Chasing Her Wife (GL) - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Generally, there is a clear “chain of contempt” within a school. At Longting No. 1 High School, this chain is quite simple, divided by academic performance: those with good grades look down on those with average grades; those with average grades look down on those with poor grades. Those who tested in looked down on those who bought their way in; and those who bought their way in looked down on those who didn’t even have the qualifications to buy a spot and had to rely on connections with people like Xia Hanyin.
Those who got in through connections held no status in the class. The teachers knew this as well, and even though they were aware of who had entered through “back doors,” they never explicitly said who they were.
However, Xia Hanyin had truly pushed the head teacher to her limit. Ms. Bu was an ambitious woman, young and aggressive, wishing she could lead the entire class to university. Seeing a disappointment like Xia Hanyin, who was unmotivated and late every single day, how could she not be angry?
Seeing the girl standing motionless at the door, the head teacher grew even more furious: “I said go back and sit down, didn’t you hear me? Is standing at the classroom door for this long supposed to look good or something?”
A discipline monitor from another class, checking attendance outside, turned to look and saw that familiar face: “Yo, late again, Xia Hanyin. Fifth time this week; I recognize you now.” As he spoke, he made a grand sweep of his pen and recorded Xia Hanyin’s name in his notebook.
The discipline monitor’s words became the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The girl, who had been hanging her head, suddenly looked up and said: “By what right are you recording my name?” As she spoke, she even tried to lung forward to snatch the attendance log from his hand.
That thing had to be submitted to the Academic Affairs Office every Friday afternoon; if it were damaged, the discipline monitor would have to pay the school out of his own pocket. Naturally, he wouldn’t give it to her, clutching it tightly to his chest: “What is wrong with you! You’re late and you won’t let people record your name. What do you mean ‘by what right’? This is my job, by what right…”
The discipline monitor checking attendance was from another class, a boy. He wasn’t very tall, but regardless, the gender advantage was there; as long as he didn’t let go, Xia Hanyin had no way to snatch the log. But Xia Hanyin refused to let go either, so the two were locked in a stalemate at the door, leaving everyone in the class staring in stunned silence.
“That’s bold enough…”
“Shh.”
You are also bold enough didn’t you see that the head teacher’s face is already so gloomy it looks like she swallowed fly dung? To dare to speak in this situation, you must have a lot of nerve or be tired of living.
Yuan Tianci had seen something wrong long ago. By now, he had run like an agile leopard from the furthest fifth group to the door to restrain Xia Hanyin: “What are you doing? Are you crazy?” He was tall and sturdy; controlling a girl was far too easy for him. Xia Hanyin struggled in his grip for a while but gradually lost the will to move. Yuan Tianci felt the strength in his hands lighten and asked softly: “Have you calmed down? If you’re not so agitated anymore, I’ll let go.”
As a grown man, holding a nearly adult girl like this didn’t seem quite appropriate.
Xia Hanyin nodded, indicating she was back to normal. Yuan Tianci was as good as his word and let go, but he remained wary. His eyes darted over Xia Hanyin’s body alertly, fearing this chubby girl might suddenly strike at the discipline monitor again. If she did, he would be one step ahead to subdue her, preventing a repeat of the previous chaos.
Thinking about how he had lifted the girl up entirely in his haste, Yuan Tianci felt a bit flushed. After confirming several times that Xia Hanyin seemed normal, he hurried back down. Although he had been handsome since childhood and never lacked girls who liked him or confessed to him, Yuan Tianci, being a well-behaved child, had actually never even touched a girl’s hand.
Let alone having large-scale skin contact with a girl it was still summer, and everyone’s clothes were thin, the less the better. Under such circumstances, while subduing Xia Hanyin, he had inevitably experienced a good sense of “a girl’s skin.”
When Yuan Tianci sat down in his seat, Qiao Wan tilted her head and gave him a deep look. Within those eyes, clear as glazed glass, was an indescribable expression. However, since Yuan Tianci sat to the front-left of Qiao Wan, he didn’t know she was looking at him.
And she looked for quite a long time.
Soon, Qiao Wan shifted her gaze back, unobtrusively, as if she had been seriously reading from start to finish and hadn’t taken the farce into her eyes, much less turned her head specifically to look at Yuan Tianci.
The discipline monitor didn’t dare stay any longer. Seeing Xia Hanyin restrained by Yuan Tianci, he immediately greeted the head teacher and left. Now, only the head teacher and Xia Hanyin remained at the door if one didn’t count Qi Jun, who had been made extremely embarrassed on her first day of taking office by Xia Hanyin’s scene and stood on the podium at a loss.
The head teacher walked two circles around Xia Hanyin. That icy gaze almost scared a cold sweat out of her. “Are you completely calmed down now?”
“Yes.” Xia Hanyin struggled to look her in the eye to avoid appearing guilty, but her voice was clearly wavering: “…Yes, I’ve calmed down.”
The head teacher tilted her chin toward the only empty seat in the class: “Go back to your seat and sit down first; you’ve already wasted a lot of morning reading time.”
The students below broke into low laughter. For this meticulous head teacher, even wasting one minute of morning reading pained her, let alone nearly fifteen minutes wasted by Xia Hanyin’s tantrum and madness. The entire morning reading session was almost over.
Normally, the head teacher would surely be driven mad with anger and wouldn’t be as calm as she was now.
Right now, she looked no different than usual, seemingly not intending to pursue Xia Hanyin’s lateness. But the calmer the head teacher was, the more Xia Hanyin’s heart drummed—was she preparing to brew her temper before exploding?
Just as a volcano must store a bit more magma before an eruption to destroy everything in one go.
She went down with a heart full of trepidation. Soon, the head teacher said to Qi Jun on the podium: “You go down too. Usually, morning reading isn’t long; I suggest leading for about fifteen to twenty minutes. It’s better to leave the remaining time for them to read on their own. Checking for gaps and filling in deficiencies no one knows better than oneself what they don’t know and what needs to be read a few more times.”
Since the head teacher had said so, Qi Jun couldn’t find the nerve to stay on the podium. Besides, as Xia Hanyin’s good friend, she was also very concerned about Xia Hanyin’s current state. So she scurried down, and before her butt even hit the chair, she scribbled a note and passed it to Xia Hanyin.
The sparse sound of reading rose again, belonging to those diligent and studious students. But since others had started reading, not reading made one feel like they would fall far behind. Thus, some who had originally intended to keep “fishing” had to pick up their textbooks and start reading.
Qi Jun sat in the seat in front of Qiao Wan. As long as Qiao Wan looked up, she could see the notes being passed back and forth between her and Xia Hanyin. Fortunately, Qi Jun sat on the left side of the third desk in the fourth group, while Xia Hanyin sat on the right side of the third desk in the fifth group. There was nothing but an aisle separating them; otherwise, given their frequency, any intermediary passing the notes wouldn’t be willing one or two notes are fine, but passing them endlessly like this would annoy anyone.
Qiao Wan watched quietly for a while, then withdrew her gaze. The head teacher had disappeared somewhere. She looked around and truly couldn’t find a trace of her. Plus, class was nearly over and the teacher likely wouldn’t come back, so Qiao Wan boldly pulled out her MP3 player.
Just as she was about to plug the earphones into her ears, she heard a light chuckle beside her, and someone whispered: “So bold.”
Qiao Wan was already feeling guilty like a thief. Hearing Qiao Mo’s voice was like a cat having its tail stepped on. She said fiercely: “Not only am I going to listen to music, I’m going to read novels too. Anyway, I know everything in the English book; reading it more is just a waste of time.”
The smile on Qiao Mo’s face didn’t change, her face looked terrifying, but her teeth were very white and perfectly aligned. They truly looked like “pearly white teeth,” something even Qiao Wan was a bit envious of. Qiao Wan’s two canine teeth were slightly sharper and thinner than the average person’s, looking a bit like tiger teeth. However, she rarely laughed out loud, so those who liked her didn’t know their campus goddess had two tiger teeth.
Qiao Mo looked at her for a bit too long, making Qiao Wan feel uneasy. Stiffening her neck, she said: “What are you looking at? I told you long ago that crossing the line isn’t allowed. Stop looking.”
Qiao Mo was slightly stunned for a moment. “Gaze counts too?”
“Of course it counts.” Qiao Wan turned her face away. Knowing she was being unreasonable, she still spoke stubbornly: “I never said that a gaze crossing the boundary doesn’t count as a type of crossing. I’m going to hit your palm.”
If it were anyone else, they might have started a fight with her by now. But not Qiao Mo; she still smiled good-naturedly at Qiao Wan and said: “Then this time is my fault, I crossed the line. Don’t hit my palm, okay? I’ll ‘watch the water’ for you.”
There was, of course, no real water to watch in the classroom; the water dispenser would have to wait until they were away for military training for the staff to install. Qiao Mo meant she would watch the teacher for her.
Having someone help watch for the teacher was naturally good. “Really?”
“Yes, of course I’m serious,” Qiao Mo said warmly. Her eyes were crinkling, her lips were curled, and even her voice carried a faint smile, as if she wasn’t angry at all at Qiao Wan’s unreasonable behavior, but rather appreciated her showing an expression different from usual. “However…”
Qiao Mo hesitated a moment, but still spoke her thoughts: “Can I listen along?”
