Surviving the Apocalypse with the Young Miss - Chapter 7
Chapter 7: Her Home
In the end, Tong Xiangyu steeled herself and jumped. Her form was far from perfect, and Song Ge barely managed to catch her.
Song Ge rode the bicycle.
Tong Xiangyu sat on the back rack, struggling to hold the long javelin.
Song Ge pedaled fast, cutting directly across the school playground.
Tong Xiangyu asked somewhat anxiously, “Does this count as skipping class?”
When Song Ge heard this, she was flabbergasted. Where did this sheltered “rich flower” come from? “How about I take you back to the classroom to finish the lesson?”
Tong Xiangyu shook her head frantically in terror.
Song Ge stopped chatting and sped along.
On the way, they saw some surviving students fleeing toward the school gates in a panic, but they had no “transportation” and were relying purely on their legs. Seeing Song Ge “whoosh” past them like the wind, they suddenly realized that was an option.
The iron gates of the school were usually kept closed.
The elderly guard at the security office was wearing reading glasses and looking at a newspaper. Seeing Song Ge riding a bike with a passenger, he immediately put down the paper and opened the window. “Hey, hey! You student! Riding bicycles is prohibited inside the school!”
“Old man!” Song Ge turned her head.
The guard recognized her instantly and looked annoyed. “Why is it you again?”
“Old man, something happened in the school. Open the gate, and you should run too!”
“What happened?!”
As he spoke, the guard inside the security office heard a series of “bang, bang, bang” sounds from outside.
Song Ge was startled and looked back immediately! She discovered that on the road outside the school, numerous private cars had collided in a massive pile-up. There was an emergency-stopped bus with windows being smashed by passengers using emergency hammers. People were jumping out of the windows to escape. Upon closer inspection, the interior of the bus was already a chaotic, bloody, and terrifying mess.
The old man took off his glasses and let out a series of cries at the sight. He didn’t dare dawdle anymore and immediately pressed the button to open the gates.
Though he was old and farsighted, his legs were still quite nimble, and he quickly ran out of the security booth.
Song Ge had originally intended only to drop the Young Mistress off outside the school, but seeing the situation now, she knew that wouldn’t work. Leaving her here would just be the difference between being bitten inside the school or outside.
The gates swung open.
Song Ge carried her passenger out, asking Tong Xiangyu at the same time, “Do you want to have your family pick you up?”
Tong Xiangyu said, “I called my driver, but no one answered.”
As Song Ge mentioned this, Tong Xiangyu’s eyes reddened again, and her voice choked up. “My mom and dad… they won’t be in trouble, will they?”
“How should I know.”
Tong Xiangyu felt she was so cold. After a moment, she asked, “Then… can you take me to my dad’s company?”
“Where is it?”
“Right in the city center.”
“Too far, not going.” Song Ge thought about how high the foot traffic was in the city center. If they went there, they’d be bitten into sieves. She said, “Either I drop you off now and you go yourself—I’ll give you the bike or you come with me to my place.”
Tong Xiangyu asked, “Where is your home?”
Song Ge was silent for a moment, thinking of her tiny, cramped basement. It probably didn’t even have enough air for this young mistress to breathe. She changed her mind: “Forget it, go find your dad.”
Song Ge squeezed the brakes and put her feet on the ground.
Hearing that Song Ge wanted to part ways, Tong Xiangyu grabbed her clothes tightly, her voice trailing off into a cry. “No! I don’t want to go alone. Don’t leave me… take me back to your home.”
Song Ge: “No regrets?”
Tong Xiangyu thought, What is there to regret? She immediately said, “No regrets!”
“Fine.” Song Ge didn’t say more. She kicked the pedal to the highest point and pushed off, ignoring the smoking, crashed cars lining the roadside.
The situation on the road was a total disaster. Song Ge thought about how there hadn’t been a single word about this on the trending searches yesterday. With it exploding so suddenly today, was their city, Kecheng, the first to fall?
If we can just find a safe place to hide during this time and wait for rescue, we’ll be okay.
She didn’t know if this was a virus or something else, but surely the government would have a way to handle it.
Song Ge’s “home” was very close to Kecheng High School—about a ten-minute walk. With a bicycle, they were even more efficient, reaching the narrow alley outside in less than five minutes.
Passing the supermarket, Song Ge took a look and felt her scalp go numb. The situation inside was no better than outside.
Did these monsters break out everywhere at the same time?
Song Ge didn’t dare linger. Fortunately, she had a good amount of food stockpiled in her room; surviving for ten days to two weeks shouldn’t be a problem. That would be enough time to wait for rescue.
However, standing before the narrow passageway, Song Ge hesitated after stopping the bike. If those monsters were everywhere, would there be some in the basement? If so, they were walking into a death trap.
“Wait here for a moment,” Song Ge told Tong Xiangyu. “I’ll go down and check. If it’s clear, I’ll come back up for you.”
Before her words had even landed, a monster with loud, huffing breath suddenly lunged out from behind a trash can. It was actually the beggar old man from yesterday.
The old man lunged directly at Tong Xiangyu to bite her!
With her back to him, Tong Xiangyu was clutching the javelin, completely unaware.
Without a word, Song Ge raised her leg and delivered a fierce kick!
The old man’s body was thin and his bones brittle; he was kicked far away and collapsed to the ground, yet he didn’t even let out a sound.
A moment ago, Tong Xiangyu saw Song Ge’s expression turn fierce; the next, she saw this act. She looked back at the filthy, messy old man on the ground, his face so bloody he was unrecognizable, and she couldn’t help but scream as she backed away.
Song Ge felt that this young mistress wasn’t safe anywhere. It was better to keep her under her own watch.
“Give me the javelin,” Song Ge said. “Follow behind me. The moment I say ‘run,’ turn and run back up immediately. Don’t look back, got it?”
Tong Xiangyu nodded nervously. “Yes!”
The corridor was extremely narrow and the lighting was poor.
Song Ge listened carefully for any movement and walked down the passage quietly. Tong Xiangyu followed closely behind her, hardly daring to breathe.
Fortunately, Song Ge’s room was on the first basement level—a semi-basement—so they didn’t have to go far down. Soon, Song Ge unlocked the door with her key and let Tong Xiangyu in first.
The room was very dark.
The only light came from a single half-window that showed the ground outside.
As soon as Tong Xiangyu walked in, she felt stifled. The room was tiny, so tiny she was shocked—Can a person actually live here?
The space was small, but there weren’t many bad smells, just poor air circulation. Tong Xiangyu had been nervous the whole way, and now she felt short of breath, as if there wasn’t enough oxygen.
Song Ge followed behind, looking around warily before locking the door tight.
The room was silent.
Song Ge double-locked the door and finally let out a sigh of relief. She walked to the desk and picked up a penguin-shaped water jug to pour some into her mouth. Halfway through the motion, she remembered something and turned to Tong Xiangyu. “Want some water?”
Hearing the question, Tong Xiangyu felt her throat was painfully dry, but seeing Song Ge’s “heroic” way of drinking, she hesitated a bit.
Seeing this, Song Ge picked up a glass sitting upside down on the desk, poured a cup, and handed it to her. “Drink.”
Tong Xiangyu took the glass reservedly with both hands and said in a small, gentle voice, “Thank you.”
Song Ge didn’t say “you’re welcome.” she held the penguin jug above her mouth to take several large gulps before asking, “You okay with keeping the lights off?”
“It’s fine.” Tong Xiangyu stood in the middle of the ten-square-meter room, her beautiful face full of awkwardness. Since there was only one small stool in the room, she felt it inappropriate to sit. At the same time, fearing she might be intrusive, she didn’t look around the small room too much.
Tong Xiangyu just kept her head down and took small sips of water.
In fact, she had heard more or less some of the rumors about Song Ge…
