- Chapter 4 - Miss Tan, You Miscalculated
In the Tan household, Tan Yayue stared at her phone as the time ticked to exactly 2:00 a.m.
“Damn Tan Lingyin, saying it’s best to fall asleep before two. Nothing even happened!”
She scoffed and opened a short video app to scroll through.
Truth be told, she had been a little sleepy earlier, but Tan Lingyin’s words kept replaying in her mind, making her overthink and unable to sleep.
Listening to the music in the videos, she admired the toned abs of the men gyrating on screen, tapping likes repeatedly.
Suddenly, she felt a breath of air brush against her ear.
Tan Yayue frowned and waved her hand near her ear. “What was that?”
A chilling cold instantly pressed down on her, making every hair on her body stand on end.
“What’s going on?!”
She screamed in fright, trying to sit up—only to realize she couldn’t move at all.
“Ah—!”
The phone in her hand slipped and smacked her right in the nose. “Ow!”
Tears welled up instantly.
A sinister voice whispered mockingly in her ear, “You like this type?”
Tan Yayue’s eyes widened in terror as she slowly turned her gaze to the side.
A faint ghostly figure lay beside her.
It had no face—only two hollow, pitch-black eyes.
“Ahhh—! Don’t kill me… wuwuwu…”
After her scream, Tan Yayue’s voice trembled as she begged for mercy.
The ghost, however, reached out and touched her face. The icy cold made her teeth chatter.
“Want to play with me? I used to have abs too.”
Tan Yayue: “Wh-what do you mean…?”
“Tonight, I’ll visit you in your dreams~”
The ghost blew a breath at Tan Yayue, and her eyes involuntarily closed.
That night, she had an R-rated dream.
Meanwhile, Tan Hongzheng and Liu Yun also had nightmares.
After her shower, Tan Lingyin slipped into her pajamas and headed to the living room for some water.
Just then, she ran into Huo Jingyan, who had just finished bathing.
The man wore a dark, belted robe, slightly open at the chest, revealing a broad expanse of pale pectorals and abs.
His half-dried black hair fell messily over his forehead, softening the sharpness of his cold, piercing eyes.
He walked over, still damp, and nearly collided with Tan Lingyin.
She subtly swallowed. To her, male beauty wasn’t the main attraction—it was the alluring violet aura radiating from him.
Huo Jingyan’s gaze darkened. Did she just… swallow?
He adjusted his collar and strode toward the tea table.
Tan Lingyin hurried after him. “Mr. Huo, what a coincidence! I came for water too.”
“Hm.” He responded indifferently, pouring himself a glass before turning to leave.
Tan Lingyin grabbed his sleeve. “Wait, I need to talk to you.”
Huo Jingyan paused, frowning at the small hand clutching his sleeve. “Let go.”
His tone was icy.
Clearly, he wasn’t too fond of her.
She quickly released him and looked up into his eyes. “Do you know you’re about to die?”
Huo Jingyan’s fingers tightened around the glass. His thin eyelids lowered as he studied her, his gaze sharp with scrutiny.
Seeing neither denial nor confirmation, Tan Lingyin smirked. “Don’t look at me like that. I swear I mean no harm.”
“Miss Tan, are you skilled in divination?” Huo Jingyan gazed at her fair, delicate face, especially those alluring fox-like eyes that shimmered like water.
Beautiful and captivating, yet on her face, they appeared innocent and guileless.
Tan Lingyin didn’t deny it. “That’s right. I’m a mystic.”
“Hmph.” The man let out a faint scoff, the corner of his lips curling slightly. “Does Miss Tan charge for this reading?”
Tan Lingyin replied, “Mr. Huo shouldn’t be short on money.”
“But I don’t feel like paying.” Huo Jingyan turned and sat directly at the table.
“Then I won’t charge.” Tan Lingyin took a seat diagonally across from him, casually picking up a cup to pour herself some water.
From the very beginning, she had never hidden the fact that she was a mystic. Her goal was to help Huo Jingyan break his death calamity and earn a favor from him.
While showering earlier, she had taken the opportunity to divine her own fortune. The reading indicated that her closest kin was in the true north direction.
That was the capital—a place of wealth and privilege.
And Huo Jingyan was from the capital.
She wanted to hitch a ride with him to the city, to have him help her search. Even if reuniting with her family didn’t work out, at least she’d know someone there.
In any case, she wasn’t staying in Nancheng any longer.
Huo Jingyan took a few sips of water, his Adam’s apple bobbing enticingly.
Tan Lingyin stole a glance, admiring the sight, then began drinking her own water as she waited for his response.
The man’s deep, refined voice rang out like the chime of jade. “If Miss Tan isn’t charging, then I suppose a reading wouldn’t hurt.”
“Good. Then I’ll be direct.”
Tan Lingyin’s expression shifted, her entire demeanor turning serious. “You were born with the imperial destiny of the Purple Star, but someone tampered with your fate when you were young, siphoning away your fortune. Now, they’ve nearly taken it all, which is why your death calamity is approaching.”
“I’ll help you break the calamity, and you’ll help me find my birth parents.”
“But until the calamity is resolved, you can’t leave my side. Otherwise, not even the gods could save you.”
The more Huo Jingyan listened, the more unsettled he became, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the obsidian ring on his index finger.
These were the exact words Master Xuanqing had once told him.
But Master Xuanqing had spent years calculating before arriving at that conclusion.
This young woman before him had just met him—how could she have figured it out so quickly?
He now had reason to suspect she was planted here deliberately.
Seeing him lower his gaze in silence, Tan Lingyin lightly tapped the table with her fingertips. “Mr. Huo, are you listening?”
Huo Jingyan leaned back in his chair, his gaze cool as it rested on her. “And why should I believe any of this?”
Tan Lingyin pressed her lips together, glancing briefly at the sky outside before saying solemnly, “Within five minutes, lightning will strike the tree in the courtyard.”
Huo Jingyan scoffed. “Then we’ll wait five minutes.”
The rain outside had already stopped—how could there possibly be lightning?
He was ready to expose her.
Huo Jingyan pulled out his phone and sent a message to Master Xuanqing.
The reply came quickly: Just arrived at the airport. Landing tomorrow morning.
Huo Jingyan felt slightly reassured. As long as Xuanqing arrived, he would be safe.
He watched the time on his phone, counting down as the five minutes neared their end.
Huo Jingyan stood. “Miss Tan, you miscalculated.”
“Also, please leave here tomorrow morning.”
Just as he turned to go, a blinding streak of white light flashed outside the window.
“CRACK—”
A bolt of lightning exploded against the tree in the courtyard, followed by a downpour of heavy raindrops.
“BOOM—”
The delayed rumble of thunder rolled in belatedly.
“Mr. Huo, you were in too much of a hurry.”
“Five minutes—right on time.”
The girl’s cool voice carried a hint of laughter, sending a tingling sensation through Huo Jingyan’s ears.
Huo Jingyan clenched his fingers and turned his head to look at her. Her fox-like eyes, curved with amusement, met his gaze.
“So now, Mr. Huo, do you still want to send me away?”
