- Chapter 9 - I Am Just Fiercely Protective
The day after Xie Jin updated his Weibo, the entire platform exploded.
#Xu Chi and Lu Qing’s Underground Romance# shot to the number one spot on the trending searches overnight, racking up over a hundred million hits. Right behind Xu Chi’s headline was #Xie Jin Hints That Lu Qing Is a Plastic Vase#.
Interestingly, Xie Jin even issued a response to the buzz:
“Sorry, but your Papa Xie Jin was born to be fiercely protective of his own.”
“Also, why did you guys have to say it out loud? Leave the girl some dignity.”
When Xu Chi saw this message, he collapsed onto his bed in fits of laughter. When it came to trickery and a sharp tongue, if Xie Jin claimed second place, no one would dare claim first. He was clearly the one calling Lu Qing an empty vase in a roundabout way, yet here he was, shifting the entire blame onto the media.
“Honestly, a vase can at least hold flowers. Lu Qing is a chamber pot at best, and a broken one at that.”
That was what Xie Jin told Xu Chi over the phone when they discussed the matter.
“I’m not kidding. I clicked on one of her dramas yesterday and couldn’t last a minute,” Xie Jin said, his voice dripping with disdain. “With that acting, she’s a leading lady? She has a face like a corpse; even her smiles look stiff.”
Xu Chi picked at his boxed lunch, rendered speechless by Xie Jin’s humor.
“Where are you right now?” Xu Chi asked. He took one last bite, leaving more than half of his meal untouched.
Gu Jingxuan, who was sitting next to him focused on his own meal, glanced over and pressed his hand down on Xu Chi’s, stopping him from packing up the lunch box.
“Eat a little more.”
Since Brother Gu had spoken, Xu Chi could only blush and agree. He began stuffing small mouthfuls of rice into his mouth, which caused him to miss whatever Xie Jin said next.
On the other end of the line, Xie Jin heard a man’s voice followed by Xu Chi’s obedient response. He immediately sniffed out something suspicious.
“Little Chi, are you hiding something from your father?”
Xu Chi tried to swallow his food too quickly and nearly choked.
“Cough, cough! Brother Jin, what nonsense are you talking about? There’s nothing going on.” Xu Chi clutched at the front of his shirt and coughed hard several times before he felt like he could breathe again.
“Drink some water.”
A cup of water appeared before him. The fingers holding the cup were long and well-defined. Xu Chi looked up to see Gu Jingxuan watching him with downcast eyes.
Gu Jingxuan had just finished filming a wedding scene. He was currently dressed in vibrant red wedding robes, looking exceptionally handsome. His thin lips were slightly pursed, and his brows were knit together. He looked down at Xu Chi with a rare flash of displeasure, his expression solemn.
Startled by Gu Jingxuan’s unusual seriousness off-camera, Xu Chi sat as still as a little white rabbit. He took the water from Gu Jingxuan’s hand. The moment their fingertips brushed, Xu Chi’s entire body shivered.
“How are you so careless that you choke just by eating?” Gu Jingxuan watched until Xu Chi finished the water, then gathered both of their lunch boxes to throw them away.
Watching Gu Jingxuan’s tall, straight back, Xu Chi felt a surge of joy in his heart.
Was Brother Gu angry just now because he was worried about me choking?
While Xu Chi was daydreaming about Gu Jingxuan’s attitude, Xie Jin, on the other end of the line, had already mentally composed a hundred different scenarios involving Xu Chi and another man.
Xie Jin glanced at his own bodyguard, who was sitting upright by the coffee table, and asked Xu Chi, “So, what does it feel like to be with a man?”
Unexpectedly, as soon as he asked the question, the bodyguard looked up at him first. That gaze contained far too much information.
“Brother Xie Jin!” Xu Chi thought his secret crush had been discovered, and his voice jumped several octaves. “You, don’t talk nonsense! I have to go, the director is calling me.”
Caught off guard by Xu Chi hanging up on him, Xie Jin’s heart skipped a beat.
It’s over, it’s over. I didn’t actually guess right, did I?
