- Chapter 6 - You Look Best When You Smile
Whether it was the biting cold or some other reason, Lu Qing was completely out of it. They had to retake the water scene three or four times already.
“Cut!” The veins on Director Jiang’s temples were bulging, and his brow was furrowed into a deep scowl. “Lu Qing! How many times do I have to say it? Turn right first! How do you keep getting that wrong?”
Lu Qing’s face was deathly pale, and she bowed repeatedly, offering her apologies.
In the water, Gu Jingxuan didn’t let any displeasure show on his face, but his eyes had turned completely cold. He had been in the water for at least twenty minutes. According to the usual pace, if today’s scene had gone smoothly, it should have been wrapped up in five minutes at most.
Before getting in, Gu Jingxuan had comforted himself by treating it like a scheduled winter swim. He hadn’t expected Lu Qing to be so distracted. After filming five or six takes of the water rescue scene, he was beginning to wonder if she had a grudge against him and was doing this on purpose.
By the time this take was finally finished, Gu Jingxuan’s lips had turned white from the cold. When he was helped ashore, he was shivering uncontrollably.
Watching from the sidelines, Xu Chi’s eyes welled up. If Lin Tao hadn’t been holding him back, he would have jumped in himself to pull Gu Jingxuan out.
Even wrapped in thick towels by the crew and standing in front of a heater running at max power, Gu Jingxuan still felt frozen to the bone, unable to feel any warmth.
“Brother Gu, ginger tea.”
Gu Jingxuan stiffly tilted his head up to see Xu Chi, eyes red, handing him a cup of ginger tea. Xu Chi’s fingertips were bright red, looking as though they had been scalded.
Gu Jingxuan took the tea, his icy, stiff fingers brushing against Xu Chi’s flushed digits.
“What’s this? Did you make this ginger tea yourself? Did you burn your hand?” Gu Jingxuan wanted to use a teasing tone to comfort the kid who looked like he was about to cry, but when he opened his mouth, his voice trembled with every word.
The touch of Gu Jingxuan’s hand was freezing, like grabbing a handful of snow in the dead of winter, sending a chill straight to Xu Chi’s heart.
“Stop talking, your face has turned purple from the cold.” Xu Chi rubbed the heat patches in his pocket, which he had already warmed up with his own body heat, planning to stick them on Gu Jingxuan when Director Jiang wasn’t looking.
Gu Jingxuan still had a fight scene later that morning, and Xu Chi didn’t want him to freeze anymore.
Hearing Xu Chi’s words, Gu Jingxuan raised a hand to rub his own face, feigning a look of horror. “Oh no, if I’ve turned purple, does that mean I’m not handsome anymore?”
Xu Chi couldn’t help but burst into a laugh, and he playfully stuffed the heat patches into Gu Jingxuan’s hand.
“Stick these on when Director Jiang isn’t looking. I tested them last night; the effect is great.” The redness around Xu Chi’s eyes had faded, replaced by the lingering curve of his smile.
Gu Jingxuan downed the cup of ginger tea in one go, frowning deeply only when Xu Chi couldn’t see his face. Then, he turned back to look at Xu Chi, who was busy fussing over him. He reached out and ruffled Xu Chi’s hair as if he were petting a pet Samoyed.
“You really do look better when you smile.”
Xu Chi’s hair was naturally fine and difficult to style, so Gu Jingxuan’s ruffing left it a complete mess.
Xu Chi pouted in dissatisfaction, trying to smooth his hair down. “I just spent forever combing it, and now you’ve messed it up again, Brother Gu.”
Xu Chi took the heat patches back from Gu Jingxuan. Taking advantage of the moment Director Jiang turned his back, he lifted Gu Jingxuan’s clothes and stuck the patches onto his stomach and lower back.
Having finished his work, Xu Chi straightened up and clapped his hands. “There, Director Jiang shouldn’t notice.”
He looked Gu Jingxuan up and down, nodding in satisfaction.
“Xu Chi-brand heart-warming service is complete! Please enjoy, honored guest.”
With that, his face flushed red again, and he ran back to find his assistant.
Watching Xu Chi’s retreating figure, Gu Jingxuan felt that the ginger tea hadn’t tasted so bad after all. His entire body felt warm and cozy.
