- Chapter 50 - A "Warning" from the Family
The next day, as soon as Lin Tao saw Xu Chi and Gu Jingxuan, he felt that something about their relationship had changed. Xu Chi would look down and giggle from time to time, and his face would turn completely red whenever his eyes met Gu Jingxuan’s.
During a break while the lunch dishes were being served, Lin Tao dragged Xu Chi into the restroom. When he spotted a bright red hickey on Xu Chi’s neck, he felt his blood pressure skyrocket.
“What is going on between you and Gu Jingxuan?” Even though they were in a private stall, Lin Tao instinctively lowered his voice, his brows furrowed deeply.
Xu Chi had not expected Lin Tao to guess the truth about him and Gu Jingxuan so quickly. Had he known, he would not have tried so hard to hide it.
Hearing Lin Tao’s words, Xu Chi immediately raised his hand to cover the left side of his neck. A flush crept up his cheeks, and his eyes darted around, not daring to meet Lin Tao’s gaze.
Receiving no reply, Lin Tao reached out, grabbed Xu Chi by the ear, and shoved him back two or three steps.
“Are you mute? I am asking you a question. You are a rising star, yet you did not even tell your own assistant that you started dating. If something happens in the future, what are you going to do?”
Lin Tao was quite worried about the future for Xu Chi and Gu Jingxuan. After all, Gu Jingxuan was an award-winning Film King. If their romance were ever exposed, the one who would suffer and be torn apart by fans would be Xu Chi. As for Gu Jingxuan, who would dare say a single bad word about him?
Furthermore, with Xu Chi’s current temperament—where he could not even take his eyes off Gu Jingxuan—if something really went wrong, he would definitely try to shoulder everything alone to ensure Gu Jingxuan remained unharmed.
Lin Tao sighed, unsure of how to evaluate Xu Chi’s honest and simple nature. He could only reach out and pinch Xu Chi’s face, not letting go until it was deformed.
“You really kept such a huge matter from us. If you get caught by the paparazzi, who is going to solve it for you? Can you handle it yourself? Do you want trouble?”
Hearing this, Xu Chi’s eyes immediately lit up like stars. He looked at Lin Tao pleadingly, his smile stretching almost from ear to ear.
“I knew Brother Lin was the best to me. But I do not want the company to know about this. If they find out, who knows how they will exploit the hype between Brother Gu and me. I do not want to use Brother Gu; I do not want him to become my stepping stone.”
Xu Chi appeared simple and warm, but he actually saw through the inner workings of the entertainment industry quite clearly. He understood the profit-driven relationships and knew how to avoid unnecessary trouble himself.
Xu Chi also knew that occasional hype and trending topics could quickly keep him in the public eye. However, once it involved Gu Jingxuan, he was unwilling to do it, even if the title of Film King was dangled right in front of him.
Looking at the young man before him, who was not much older than his own younger brother, Lin Tao thought of his brother at home who still frequently acted spoiled in their mother’s arms and begged for luxury items. Meanwhile, Xu Chi was already supporting himself and helping others solve their problems. It was impossible not to feel for him, so Lin Tao helped whenever he could.
Treating Xu Chi like his own brother, taking care of him, and helping him avoid the industry’s unspoken rules and murky waters was the best Lin Tao could do.
“Be careful in the future. I know you like Gu Jingxuan, but you must also consider your own feelings.” Lin Tao knew that once Xu Chi thought of Gu Jingxuan, he would likely neglect his own well-being, so he could not help but nag a few more times.
Xu Chi nodded repeatedly, promising he would remember Lin Tao’s words and take good care of himself.
Lin Tao had no choice but to give in to such a well-behaved Xu Chi. He ruffled Xu Chi’s hair vigorously, then turned and walked out of the restroom, leaving Xu Chi alone, clutching his ruined hairstyle that he had spent all morning perfecting, stomping his feet in frustration.
When Gu Jingxuan saw Lin Tao come out alone, he was a bit puzzled.
“Why hasn’t Xu Chi come out? Were you scolding him in the restroom?”
Whenever Gu Jingxuan spoke of Xu Chi, his lips curled into a smile, and his eyes were so tender they could practically melt into water.
Lin Tao could see Gu Jingxuan’s attitude toward Xu Chi, but he still felt the need to give him a warning.
“You know Xu Chi likes you very much, but you cannot take him for granted just because of that.”
Hearing this, Gu Jingxuan frowned in confusion.
“Xu Chi likes me very much? How could I not take him seriously? I was the one who confessed last night before he agreed to be with me. I would not dare put on airs with him; I cannot afford to lose such a wonderful partner.”
Upon hearing Gu Jingxuan’s words, Lin Tao was stunned for a long while.
Gu Jingxuan was the one who confessed last night? He had always assumed that Xu Chi had finally reached his limit and, sharing a room with the person he loved, had finally forced the issue and made Gu Jingxuan stay with him.
It seemed he might have overthought things.
Pushing aside the uncontrolled images in his mind, Lin Tao composed himself, feeling he still needed to give Gu Jingxuan a firm warning.
“In a way, I count as Xu Chi’s family. If you bully him or make him sad in the future, just you wait.” Lin Tao swallowed hard as he spoke, trying to make himself sound more confident. He stood firmly before Gu Jingxuan with his legs spread wide, as if in a martial arts stance.
“Xu Chi likes you so much. If you betray him, he definitely will not blame you; he will only cry by himself in secret.”
Gu Jingxuan had never known that he held such a high position in Xu Chi’s heart. Xu Chi had placed him right at the very center.
In the past, Gu Jingxuan might have been somewhat dismissive. But seeing Lin Tao’s serious expression while telling him to treat Xu Chi well gave him the feeling that a family member was personally handing over their precious treasure.
Gu Jingxuan felt a sting in his nose and looked down to smile as a cover.
“Of course, I will treat him well. I like him so much I even dream of him at night. I want to hold him in my hands and spoil him every day; how could I bear to let him suffer any more?”
Perhaps many people do not believe in that damned “love at first sight,” and Gu Jingxuan didn’t either. However, his feelings for Xu Chi were built bit by bit over these past three months. It grew from a favorable impression to liking him, and then to liking him so much he could not let go.
Gu Jingxuan had never shared this feeling with anyone else, nor had he ever experienced it.
Since Xu Chi’s “family” wanted him to take good care of him, what reason did he have not to treat such a treasure with all his heart?
