- Chapter 46 - Stuffed with Dog Food
By the time Xu Chi and Lin Tao had arrived, the hotel was down to its last twin standard rooms. With no other choice, they had booked two twin rooms. Once Gu Jingxuan found out, he simply abandoned the idea of booking a room for himself. He dragged his suitcase into Xu Chi’s room and made it clear he wasn’t leaving.
Lin Tao, well aware that he was currently a giant, glowing third wheel, tactfully yielded the room to the two of them and retreated to his own. He could already guess the ultimate outcome: either Xu Chi would cave early, or he would eventually succumb to Gu Jingxuan’s relentless offensive.
Gu Jingxuan sat in the middle of the room, leaning against his suitcase. He looked at Xu Chi with eyes full of a pleading quality, resembling a homeless stray dog. Specifically, he looked like a clean, well-groomed, large Labrador, wagging its tail and whimpering at Xu Chi as if he might burst into tears the second Xu Chi rejected him.
Knowing he couldn’t say no if he looked into Gu Jingxuan’s eyes, Xu Chi turned his head away, trying his best to avoid the man’s gaze. Even his voice lacked its usual conviction.
“Brother Gu, wouldn’t it be better if you booked your own room? It would be convenient, and no one would disturb you.”
Xu Chi was purely worried that if he and Gu Jingxuan shared a room, he wouldn’t be able to restrain himself from doing something untoward. If he was truly at risk of losing control, it was better to nip the possibility in the bud.
Gu Jingxuan’s clinginess was more than Xu Chi could handle. At this moment, the older man gently tugged on Xu Chi’s hand, holding just a few of his fingers and shaking them lightly. “Look, booking another room is a waste of money. You and Lin Tao already booked two twin rooms, which means two beds are going to waste anyway. Now that I’m here, we can save on accommodation costs.”
Having said that, he acted as if he had suddenly remembered something and tightened his grip on Xu Chi’s fingers. “Are you worried I’m taking advantage of you? Don’t worry, I can pay you rent. I’ll pay half the price of the twin room. Xu Chi, Xu Chi… just let me stay.”
Xu Chi wasn’t refusing because of money. In fact, if anyone was going to take advantage of someone, Xu Chi was worried he might be the one taking advantage of Gu Jingxuan—and he’d probably be willing to pay for the privilege.
“Brother Gu, you know that’s not what I’m thinking. It’s not about the rent. How can you stay in the same room as me?”
If Gu Jingxuan had suggested staying with Lin Tao, Xu Chi wouldn’t have protested at all—at most, he would have felt a bit disgruntled. But the moment Gu Jingxuan suggested sleeping in the same room as him, Xu Chi became incredibly restless. His mind was flooded with questions: What is my sleeping posture like at night? Do I snore? Do I grind my teeth?
“What’s wrong with it? When I’m with a film crew, sometimes the locations don’t even have hotels; I’ve slept in tents before.” Gu Jingxuan was the type who wouldn’t stop until he reached his goal. Hearing Xu Chi refuse him only made him want to share the room more.
Finally, unable to withstand the intensity of Gu Jingxuan’s gaze, Xu Chi said in a tone of self-abandonment, “I’m afraid my sleeping habits are bad and I’ll wake you up.”
Hearing this reason, Gu Jingxuan couldn’t help but chuckle. That’s it? Xu Chi had been at a standoff with him for so long just because of that?
Gu Jingxuan pulled Xu Chi’s hand toward him. His fingers traced the back of Xu Chi’s hand delicately, following a vein up toward the wrist before firmly encircling it.
“I won’t mind your sleeping habits. If you sleepwalk, I’ll just hold you while we sleep.” Seeing a hint of hesitation in Xu Chi’s expression, Gu Jingxuan bit his lip, putting on an expectant look. “Just let me sleep here. We’ll save money, and we can even discuss the script.”
Perhaps it was Gu Jingxuan’s last sentence that finally moved Xu Chi. He let all the tension leave his body, allowing Gu Jingxuan to continue playing with his hand.
“Fine. Brother Gu, you can stay in my room. But we’re making a deal beforehand: no complaining about my sleeping posture or anything.”
Having received Xu Chi’s permission, Gu Jingxuan would have stripped off his clothes and jumped into the icy river for a winter swim if Xu Chi had asked. A small request like this was nothing; even if Xu Chi hadn’t mentioned it, Gu Jingxuan wouldn’t have minded.
“Don’t worry, I’ll never mind. I can’t like you enough as it is. After all, you’re my very, very, very favorite kiddo.”
Gu Jingxuan held Xu Chi’s hand, unable to let go. Xu Chi’s wrist was very slender; Gu Jingxuan could encircle the entire thing with one hand with room to spare.
His thumb rested against the inside of the wrist, pressed firmly against the skin. Through the touch, Gu Jingxuan could feel Xu Chi’s pulse—the slight, rhythmic thumping against his finger was immensely satisfying to his heart.
Lin Tao stayed in the next room for quite a while, estimating the two of them had finished their “negotiations” before he finally knocked on Xu Chi’s door.
Gu Jingxuan opened the door. When Lin Tao walked in, he saw Xu Chi bent over, helping Gu Jingxuan organize his clothes and daily necessities.
Items were neatly categorized and placed into small boxes, which were then arranged on the side table.
Lin Tao clicked his tongue in amazement. He wished he could record Xu Chi’s current “devoted little wife” look and send it to the group chat of hungry “dogs” waiting for news.
He hasn’t even landed the Movie King yet, and he’s already acting like a virtuous wife and mother. If they actually get together, how domestic is Xu Chi going to get?
Lin Tao had initially assumed Gu Jingxuan was bullying Xu Chi into cleaning up for him, but after opening the door, Gu Jingxuan ignored Lin Tao entirely. Instead, he bent down to join Xu Chi in tidying up the slightly messy contents of the suitcase.
Their silhouettes were close together, projecting a sense of harmony that looked like an old married couple. It was as if they had lived together for a very long time and understood each other’s habits perfectly.
As they organized the clothes, Gu Jingxuan would occasionally tease Xu Chi. Only when he saw the tips of Xu Chi’s ears turn red would he laugh and turn back to his work. Xu Chi would occasionally respond to Gu Jingxuan’s mischief, swatting away his meddling hands.
Sitting on the sofa, Lin Tao felt his “titanium-grade dog eyes” were being blinded. He was already so stuffed with “dog food” that he didn’t even need to worry about what to eat for dinner.
Despite knowing Lin Tao was in the room, Gu Jingxuan didn’t restrain his behavior. On the contrary, he was intentionally leading Lin Tao to view his relationship with Xu Chi in a “certain light.” This way, Xu Chi might realize the nature of their relationship through Lin Tao’s observations, which would be a massive help for Gu Jingxuan to eventually win Xu Chi over in the future.
