- Chapter 30 - Slowly Falling in Love with You
Xu Chi felt as if he had been thrust into a giant furnace; his entire body felt like it was about to melt under the heat.
The temperature of Gu Jingxuan’s lips, the words whispered in his ear, and the warm breath on his skin left Xu Chi unable to judge or respond to the situation.
Brother Gu kissed me! It wasn’t in a scene and it was voluntary!?
Xu Chi felt so happy he was floating on clouds. His feet didn’t feel like they were touching the ground; it was a light, dizzying sensation that felt almost precarious.
Seeing Xu Chi’s vacant, dazed stare, Gu Jingxuan couldn’t tell if he was overjoyed or simply frightened out of his wits. Left with no other choice, he took Xu Chi’s hand and led him out of the restroom. He only let go when they reached the door of the KTV room, letting Xu Chi walk in ahead of him to find a seat.
The others were getting tired of singing, and when they saw the two walk in, they began to clamor to hear them sing.
By this time, Xu Chi was starting to come back to his senses. The warmth and sensation from where Gu Jingxuan had kissed his cheek still lingered. He looked down and touched the spot lightly with his fingertips, only to jerk his hand back as if he’d been burned.
He didn’t even hear what people were saying; he just nodded in agreement.
Recognizing that Xu Chi was currently out of it, Gu Jingxuan stepped in and took the microphone first.
“Ahem. I rarely sing in public, so no recording or photos allowed.”
Hearing Gu Jingxuan’s voice through the microphone, Xu Chi looked up at him. The dazzling, colorful neon lights of the KTV hit Gu Jingxuan’s face, coating him in a layer of prismatic light that made him so striking it was impossible to look away. Xu Chi stared unblinkingly. Even under these bright lights, he felt that the radiance emanating from Gu Jingxuan himself was what truly made it hard to keep his eyes open.
The crew members laughed and agreed, tucking their phones back into their bags. Gu Jingxuan had never sung on variety shows or for the media; everyone assumed he was afraid of singing poorly and being laughed at, so they respected his wish.
The sound of a shutter clicking came from a corner. After receiving a sharp look from Gu Jingxuan, the person stuck their tongue out and put their phone away.
“Ahem. I haven’t sung in a long time, so don’t blame me if it’s bad.”
Since graduating university and entering the entertainment industry, Gu Jingxuan rarely sang. Occasionally, when friends gathered, he might belt out a few lines in a KTV.
When the intro began, Xu Chi finally snapped out of the daze from the restroom kiss. Hearing Gu Jingxuan start to sing, he felt a surge of regret for not turning on his phone to record it.
As soon as Gu Jingxuan opened his mouth, the entire room fell silent.
It wasn’t because it sounded bad, quite the opposite. Gu Jingxuan’s voice was magnetic and deep. Singing this song, it sounded like he was whispering a secret directly into one’s ear. It commanded total attention, drowning out everything else.
“…I just kissed you, you liked it too, right? Otherwise, why have you been holding my hand and not letting go?”
When Gu Jingxuan reached this lyric, he couldn’t help but glance back at Xu Chi. Seeing the boy sitting upright on the sofa, staring at him motionlessly, his heart softened until it felt like it might melt.
“Slowly falling in love with you, slowly becoming intimate, Slowly talking about ourselves, slowly walking together. Slowly I want to match you, slowly giving myself to you. Slowly falling in love with you, slowly making memories, Slowly accompanying you, slowly growing old… Because ‘slowly’ is such a good reason.”
When he was first asked to sing, Gu Jingxuan’s mind had gone blank. The request was sudden, and he hadn’t listened to any particular songs recently. But when he glanced over and saw Xu Chi’s flushed face, this song suddenly leapt into his mind.
It wasn’t a sudden burst of affection or a fleeting interest.
He was slowly falling for Xu Chi, slowly wanting to get closer. He liked seeing Xu Chi get flustered after being teased, unable to say a harsh word. He liked that Xu Chi’s gaze always revolved around him. He wanted to walk this path with Xu Chi, slowly.
The moment he saw Xu Chi, these lyrics appeared in his head.
Meeting Gu Jingxuan’s eyes, Xu Chi looked away unnaturally. His heart was racing like a trapped deer, pounding so hard it felt like it might jump out of his chest.
Is this song for me? Slowly falling in love with me? Or did he just happen to pick it?
“Wow! Film King Gu, you’re amazing!” “You were hiding this? Your voice is incredible.” “So handsome, you could rival the God of Songs, Xie Jin.” “I heard his best friend used to be Shen Yi, the previous God of Songs.” “The one who did drugs?”
The crew was captivated by his voice, their eyes shining as they looked at him. Gu Jingxuan sat down next to Xu Chi as if no one else was there, whispering to the person on the other side, “Sorry, can you give us some space?”
“Well? Is your Brother Gu awesome or what?” Gu Jingxuan opened a can of beer and nudged Xu Chi with his elbow.
“Ah? Um… it sounded great,” Xu Chi replied, holding the microphone someone had passed him, looking somewhat lost.
Few people knew he used to do music. Since leaving that circle, he rarely picked up a microphone to sing. Right now, the device felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
Xu Chi bit his lip nervously, his tongue darting out to lick his dry lips. Gu Jingxuan nudged him again. “Go up and sing! What are you staring at the mic for?”
The crowd joined in, chanting Xu Chi’s name and clapping. Picking up the microphone to sing again wasn’t simple for him; memories of his past began to flash before his eyes.
Noticing the hesitation in Xu Chi’s gaze, Gu Jingxuan leaned in and whispered, “If you sing a song, I’ll grant you one request.”
The promise was far too tempting. Xu Chi swallowed hard, feeling a lump in his throat.
“It’s a deal then. You have to grant me a request.”
Gu Jingxuan couldn’t help but laugh as he watched Xu Chi walk up. Alright, now if I want my little one to do something, it has to be an equal exchange. What a clever little ghost.
The “clever little ghost” stood before the big screen, his back still stiff with nerves. He tried to sing along to the intro, only for his voice to crack. He coughed awkwardly to clear his throat and reset his voice.
Under the teasing gazes of the crew, he started the accompaniment again.
“And my heart will go on and on.”
