After Christmas passed, Mother Xue could no longer contain herself and urged the two to come home for dinner on New Year’s Eve. At the same time, she invited Pei Nan’s mother, making it a meeting of the in-laws to properly discuss the two children’s engagement.
Zhu Yun had no objections, and Pei Nan had even fewer.
However, there was now a pressing issue that he and Xue Xingqi had to face: when to inform their parents that he was pregnant.
Pei Nan held a throw pillow while playing video games, and Xue Xingqi held Pei Nan. “If you’re not ready yet, we can wait a bit longer. Anyway, this little guy isn’t in a hurry.”
As long as Pei Nan wore slightly loose clothing, the changes in his lower abdomen were completely unnoticeable unless someone was like Xue Xingqi, sticking to him every day, either circling his waist or hugging it.
Pei Nan’s considerations were relatively simple. Since he had accepted the pregnancy himself and Xue Xingqi had accepted it, his mother likely wouldn’t have a problem either. He just didn’t know how Xue Xingqi’s parents would view it. Wealthy people had seen much of the world; surely they wouldn’t go as far as to lock him up for research.
But then he thought, Xue Xingqi alone was nervous enough about him. Now, whenever he had free time, he was reading childcare books and attending prenatal classes on schedule. When he came back, he would chant at Pei Nan like a monk reciting scriptures. If everyone found out early, wouldn’t his head explode from all the nagging?
“Let’s talk about it later,” Pei Nan said. “You feel them out first. If all else fails, we’ll wait until the baby is born to tell them.”
“That probably won’t work. Given the frequency with which Mom eats dinner with us, she’s bound to find out sooner or later. Instead of waiting for them to discover it themselves and scold us both, it’s better to confess early. Besides, the mothers have plenty of experience. If you don’t like them taking care of you, then I will. I’ll go and consult them on knowledge regarding prenatal care.”
Xue Xingqi lifted Pei Nan’s wrist and gave a series of light kisses near the blue veins. The fine, tingling itch made Pei Nan’s back go numb. He subconsciously leaned back against him, but the deep-seated itch remained. He eventually grabbed Xue Xingqi’s chin and gave him a hearty, thorough kiss.
He relaxed his strength and leaned against Xue Xingqi, thinking for a moment before returning to the previous topic.
“You’ve already read so many books and taken so many classes; do you still need to listen to them?”
“Practice yields true knowledge. You are Mom’s child; perhaps her methods will be more effective,” Xue Xingqi said, unsure. But as long as he could take good care of Pei Nan and the baby, he was willing to learn and try anything.
He watched as Pei Nan started another round of his game and kissed the corner of his lip. “The soup simmering in the pot is ready. I’ll go dish out a bowl for you to let it cool. You have to drink it as soon as this round is over.”
Pei Nan gave him a quick kiss back, but his aim was off, and he kissed Xue Xingqi’s cheek instead. “I know, I know. Come back quickly.”
Xue Xingqi placed the soup on the coffee table and indeed sat back in his original position, continuing to serve as a self-heating backrest for Pei Nan.
On the 31st, the two of them didn’t wake up until they had slept their fill. Upon waking, they found the world outside the window was a blanket of white. Pei Nan lazily nudged Xue Xingqi. “It’s snowing. Get up quickly. The roads will definitely be hard to travel today.”
He had seen enough snow this year. He had played to his heart’s content during Christmas. If it hadn’t been for the influx of tourists arriving at the resort the following afternoon, he and Xue Xingqi might have stayed for a few more days.
Xue Xingqi did get up, but he got up while holding Pei Nan.
He had packed the luggage yesterday, and the gifts were already lined up by the door, just waiting for them to wash up and get dressed before leaving. However, Xue Xingqi had clearly overestimated his self-control when he was with Pei Nan. In the end, the two of them lingeringly resolved their “morning issues” in the bathroom.
Because of this delay, the road conditions were exactly as Pei Nan had predicted. Not only was there a lot of traffic, but the roads were also a bit slippery. Later, there were even more cars, and the snow turned into muddy slush, following the tire tracks into the villa district.
Zhu Yun arrived a bit earlier. Just as she was about to scold Pei Nan for his lack of etiquette, she noticed that her tall, handsome son seemed to have gained weight. Ever since Pei Nan started swimming, he hadn’t really gained weight for many years. His face, in particular, looked so supple and sleek that it made one want to touch and pinch it. Her hand actually reached out, but was intercepted mid-air by Pei Nan.
“What are you doing, Mom? How old am I now?”
“How old are you? At this age, you still don’t know to come over earlier.” Zhu Yun poked his forehead, her fingers rubbing together as she thought to herself that her son’s skin was truly fine.
Xue Xingqi quickly took over the conversation. “It was my delay. Nan Nan was ready long ago, but he spent some time waiting for me to change clothes.”
Mother Xue smiled to diffuse the situation. “It’s not late. Dinner isn’t ready yet anyway. Besides, I know Xingqi’s temper. When he was little, he actually refused to go to the amusement park because the clothes his father bought were unattractive.”
“Really?” Pei Nan asked curiously, looking at Xue Xingqi teasingly. “So you’re not a perfect person after all.”
Xue Xingqi held Pei Nan’s hand and said with a smile, “Did you take me for an immortal?”
“If not an immortal, then something close to it.”
“Alright, alright, you two sit down.” Father Xue looked up at these two tall fellows and felt it was a strain on his neck. He quickly urged them to sit and talk, while waving toward the kitchen. “Yaya, your brother is back with his boyfriend. Come and meet Brother Pei Nan.”
“Coming!” A young girl’s lively, crisp voice approached from a distance. When she saw Pei Nan, she suddenly froze on the spot, tilting her head as if trying to figure something out. Just as Father Xue was about to urge her, the little girl ran toward Pei Nan like a cannonball. “I remember now! Brother, I’ve seen you before!”
Mother Xue asked in surprise, “Where did you see Brother?”
Xue Xingya stood in front of Pei Nan, looked at him carefully again, and then turned to Mother Xue with certainty. “The hotpot restaurant! I was out eating with Auntie Liu. It was Brother who saved me and blocked the hotpot soup for me. Auntie Liu can testify! Auntie Liu, Auntie Liu!”
Auntie Liu came out of the kitchen. When she saw Pei Nan and his mother in the living room, her eyes widened in disbelief. Only then did Father and Mother Xue take the matter seriously. Mother Xue was both happy and distressed. “It seems this was a fated connection. Nan Nan, did the hotpot soup burn you? Did it leave a scar?”
“No, actually the soup was alright. I was wearing a lot and blocked it with my back, so it wasn’t much of a problem. If it had poured over Yaya’s head, the injury would have been much worse.” Pei Nan patted the little sister’s shoulder with a relaxed smile. 419 also stood on top of his head, acting all proud and mighty—hmph, it had a hand in saving her too!
“It’s a blessing that you’re okay. Truly a blessing,” Mother Xue sighed, clutching her chest.
Zhu Yun was also deeply moved. “Yes, who would have thought that something we thought was over would have a follow-up at the end of the year? Life is truly unpredictable.”
While the adults sighed and talked about the past and the little girl was surrounded and questioned, Pei Nan caught Xue Xingqi’s eye and pulled him aside. After checking to make sure no one was looking, he quickly gave Xue Xingqi a kiss on the mouth and asked in a low, coaxing voice, “Why are you unhappy?”
From the moment his sister said she knew him, the man’s smile had faded significantly. By the time his sister finished describing the hotpot restaurant experience, his smile had vanished completely. Fortunately, the adults’ attention was on the child, otherwise they would have surely had something to say to him.
Xue Xingqi looked deeply at Pei Nan. After a long pause, he hugged him, his voice low and sounding somewhat dejected. “Don’t ever do that again. You must put your own safety first, no matter what.”
“Hey, it was just for that? How many accidents can a person encounter in a lifetime… Okay, okay, I promise you.”
Xue Xingqi’s expression was so pained that Pei Nan, holding his face, feared he might suddenly crumble in his palms. “I won’t let anything happen to me.”
“I went to pick up my sister that day. If I had waited just a bit longer, would I have seen you then?”
Pei Nan licked his lips. “It doesn’t matter. I saw you.”
Xue Xingqi’s eyes brightened a bit. “Really?”
“Don’t you know how much I liked your Hummer back then?” Pei Nan’s eyes drifted to the side.
This time, Xue Xingqi truly smiled. “You should have stepped out and extorted me then. That way, our story could have started even earlier.”
“Forget it. What kind of good impression would you have of someone who blackmailed you? You’re not an idiot.”
Xue Xingqi happily kissed his mouth. “That wasn’t the first time I saw you anyway. I know you’re a good person with a kind heart.”
Being stared at by Xue Xingqi’s smiling eyes made Pei Nan’s heart thud. He suddenly felt a bit nervous, even more so than when they had first made their relationship official. He heard his own voice sounding a bit dry. “When was that?”
Xue Xingqi showed a look of reminiscence, incredibly tender. “Not long after school started. You were coming back from a dinner with Chen Bin. He was drunk, and you were helping him past the pharmacy. I still remember you telling him to call you ‘Daddy,’ otherwise you’d leave him to sleep on the street.”
Pei Nan remembered. He narrowed his eyes. “So it was you laughing! What were you laughing at? Did I say something wrong or do something wrong?”
“No, no, no. Binzi was the one being difficult. You’re a magnanimous person; please forgive me too.” Xue Xingqi pulled him closer into his arms and said suggestively, “Give me a chance to make amends?”
“Go ahead.”
Pei Nan had never felt that kissing was such a sweet thing. He secretly opened his eyes to look at Xue Xingqi, only to find that Xue Xingqi was also looking at him with open eyes. They looked at each other, and deep in their eyes were each other’s reflections.
Xue Xingya, hiding behind the greenery, shyly covered her eyes. Only when she felt they had kissed enough did she say, “Brother, it’s time to eat!”
Pei Nan pushed Xue Xingqi’s face away, his face turning incredibly red. He wanted to blame Xue Xingqi for having no sense of propriety, but then he thought that he was responsible too.
Xue Xingqi was much more composed than Pei Nan. If it hadn’t been for the fact that Xue Xingya ran away quickly, he would have had to teach the child the meaning of “see no evil.”
After having lunch together, Zhu Yun went home. Pei Nan had wanted to go back with her; he used to spend every New Year’s Eve with his mother and didn’t want her to be lonely this year.
“No need. You and Xingqi just have a good time. Mom has her own arrangements too.”
“Really?”
Ms. Zhu Yun raised an eyebrow, her spirited appearance putting Pei Nan at ease.
After seeing to Pei Nan, the Xue parents also went to rest. Xue Xingqi had a document to handle and went to the study. Pei Nan thought he could rest too, but unexpectedly, Xue Xingya turned out to be even more clingy than Xue Xingqi, following him around like a little shadow. Having no other choice, he asked Xue Xingya if she wanted to play games.
The little girl shook her head. “Brother, you’re so handsome. I want to take pictures with you.”
“Isn’t your brother handsome?”
“Him? He’s handsome too, but he won’t take pictures with me. You take them with me. Nan Nan-gege and I are the best in the whole world.” Xue Xingya cupped her face in a mock-cute pose.
Seeing this, Pei Nan thought to himself: The Xue siblings are both too good at bewitching people.
He handed his phone to Xue Xingya, letting her take control of the lens. After taking many photos, Xue Xingya opened the album to pick her favorites.
“Brother, is this little rabbit yours? It’s so cute!”
