Compared to someone like Pei Nan, who lacked a sense of ritual, Xue Xingqi was actually quite skilled when it came to romance.
He had originally planned the entire itinerary for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. However, after waking up early one morning, he saw Pei Nan’s phone left on the dining table. The chat interface happened to be the group of three consisting of Chen Bin, Yaoyao, and Pei Nan. Yaoyao was frantically outputting advice, covering everything from dating spots to which hotels to stay at for the night. Xue Xingqi smiled knowingly and tucked his own plans away.
He liked seeing Pei Nan put effort into him, much like he liked the sunshine; it was an irrepressible instinct within his body.
Unexpectedly, plans couldn’t keep up with changes. Both his dating plan and Pei Nan’s plan were grounded to varying degrees. But to be honest, this Christmas wasn’t bad at all; it was actually the most surprising one Xue Xingqi had experienced in his entire life.
In the same vein, Pei Nan deserved to receive a surprise of his own this Christmas.
“You can take a short nap. I’ll wake you up when we arrive.”
Pei Nan leaned comfortably against the back of the seat, watching Xue Xingqi start the car and set off along a familiar road. He couldn’t help but ask, “Where are we going?”
“Let’s maintain a bit of mystery, shall we? You can tell me what you’d like to eat for dinner instead.”
Pei Nan’s thoughts followed Xue Xingqi’s lead as he silently began to think of a menu.
As the heavy traffic and festive decorations gradually slipped past his eyes, Pei Nan suddenly realized they weren’t heading toward the city center’s commercial district. He immediately forgot about the menu and grabbed Xue Xingqi’s sleeve, asking, “It’s almost dark. Where exactly are we going?”
“Didn’t you want to see the snow? We’re going to see the snow.”
Pei Nan had been nagging about wanting to see snow for quite a while. Watching him check the weather forecast for days on end and sighing at short videos on his phone, Xue Xingqi thought Pei Nan was incredibly adorable.
Perhaps Pei Nan didn’t even realize it himself, but when he was frustrated, he would pout his mouth slightly with the corners turned down. Every time this happened, Xue Xingqi would hallucinate the childhood version of Pei Nan a frustrated little “steamed bun” face with handsome features.
Who would have thought that a few months from now, he might actually have the chance to see what Pei Nan looked like as a child with his own eyes?
“See snow? Where is it snowing?” Pei Nan asked excitedly.
“Out in the suburbs, at the resort near the mountains.” Xue Xingqi looked at Pei Nan, whose eyes were shining like stars; he knew the other would definitely love it.
Ever since Pei Nan started talking about snow, Xue Xingqi had been preparing. It was just that the weather had been too clear lately, so there wasn’t even an opportunity for artificial snow. A few days ago, the contact Xue Xingqi reached out to finally said the conditions had been met, though the snowfall range wouldn’t be large, and asked if he still wanted the service.
Xue Xingqi didn’t hesitate to finalize the arrangement.
Before receiving this news, he had suggested going north to see snow, but Pei Nan declined, saying the north was too cold. He suggested skiing, which would be a way to see snow indirectly, but Pei Nan shelved that too, citing the need to protect his joints. This time, with the artificial snow, he couldn’t let it slip by.
He had been waiting and hoping to give this to Pei Nan on Christmas Day.
Calculating the time, it should be starting to snow lightly near the resort by now.
“How did you know it was going to snow over there? I checked the forecast and it said it would be sunny lately, at most a bit cloudy. It’s impossible for it to snow.” Pei Nan was curious truly curious.
Xue Xingqi smiled. “Maybe it’s because you wanted to see it so much that you moved the heavens and the earth.”
Pei Nan hugged his arms and snorted coldly. “Stop trying to fool me like an idiot. My grades aren’t great, but it’s not like I don’t have common sense. If I really made it snow, I must have suffered some great grievance or been terribly wronged.”
He paused, then added, “You must have spent a lot of money, right?”
“No, the resort belongs to my uncle’s family. It doesn’t cost anything for the two of us to stay and play. I originally wanted to take you to the hot springs, but I checked before coming and found out it’s not very suitable for the early stages of pregnancy. We’ll come back and have a good time later.”
When he said “later,” he meant after the baby was born.
Happening to hit a red light, Xue Xingqi reached out his hand and covered Pei Nan’s abdomen.
“Don’t think about anything; I’m happy as long as you are happy.” He moved his hand from the belly to Pei Nan’s face to stroke it. Unconsciously, the face seemed to have filled out a bit, and the texture felt different. He hooked Pei Nan’s chin with a bit of force. “Baby, the road is still a bit long. Let’s have another kiss.”
“Do you treat me like a gas station?” Even as he said that, Pei Nan’s body acted contrary to his words as he leaned over to let Xue Xingqi kiss him a few times. “Alright, that’s enough. The red light is counting down.”
Xue Xingqi was left wanting more, but since the setting wasn’t right, he reluctantly let go of Pei Nan and gripped the steering wheel.
Just as Xue Xingqi predicted, as they left the urban area and were about ten kilometers from the resort, tiny snowflakes began to drift onto the car windows. Small flakes hit the windshield like ice pellets, making a rustling sound. Pei Nan watched in surprise, even wanting to open the window to catch some with his hand.
Sensing his intention, Xue Xingqi immediately locked the windows. “The wind is so strong and cold. What if you catch a cold? Be good, Nannan. We’ll play with the snow once we get there.”
His tone was no different from coaxing a child. Surprisingly, Pei Nan was susceptible to this approach; he actually sat back properly, his eyes fixed on the navigation, counting down the remaining distance. “Five kilometers left. The snow seems to be getting bigger.”
“Two kilometers left. The snow really is getting bigger.”
By the last kilometer, Pei Nan was no longer surprised. The closer they got to the resort, the heavier the snow fell. It came down in sheets like goose feathers, covering the windshield completely in no time. The wipers followed closely behind, but they couldn’t even sweep away the accumulating snow fast enough.
Xue Xingqi hadn’t expected the artificial snow to be this effective. He wondered if the scenery he had people set up would still be visible.
The European-style buildings, draped in silver, finally appeared. The brightly lit Christmas trees were diligently welcoming the only couple of the day.
The first thing Pei Nan did after getting out of the car was to stomp in the snow. He took a stride with his long legs, creating several pits in the snow with a pa-pa-pa sound. The crunching sound of the snow reached Pei Nan’s ears along with Xue Xingqi’s nervous voice.
“My ancestor, please walk slower. Wait for me.”
Leaving the Hummer where it was, Xue Xingqi caught up to Pei Nan with his heart in his throat. He only breathed a sigh of relief when he securely held the other’s hand.
Pei Nan couldn’t stand seeing Xue Xingqi like this. As they walked, he bumped his shoulder against him. “I know my own body. I’m as strong as a little calf. Just put your heart back in your chest.”
“I know you’re amazing, but that doesn’t stop me from caring about you.” Xue Xingqi and Pei Nan interlaced their fingers, exchanging body heat. “I like taking care of you. Just let me take care of you.”
His eyes were gentle, framed by the swirling snow, making him look incredibly handsome.
Pei Nan’s heart throbbed at the sight of that face. He pursed his lips and, after a long while, gave a soft “mm.” Xue Xingqi turned his head and saw that Pei Nan’s face had turned completely red.
For some reason, Xue Xingqi’s face slowly began to redden as well.
“I’ll take you to eat first, then we’ll look at the snow scenery. If you want to play in the snow, I’ll join you, but we have to wait until tomorrow.” Xue Xingqi spoke incoherently, his logic failing him. “The weather will be better tomorrow. It’s not safe today I mean, it’s dark now.”
Pei Nan suddenly stopped and looked at Xue Xingqi with a grin. “Okay.”
His eyes were filled with brilliant light. Looking at them, Xue Xingqi began to laugh as well.
It was hard to say who moved first or whose lips met whose first. By the time they realized it, they were pressed tightly together, kissing passionately. The two tall men stood on the snowy ground, their handsome faces hidden under their hats, hands cupping each other’s faces, kissing as if they couldn’t bear to be apart.
White mist escaped from beneath their hats, landing on their hair and eyelashes, freezing into tiny ice crystals.
The sumptuous dinner was eaten hastily and haphazardly. It wasn’t until they collapsed onto the large circular bed covered in rose petals that the two felt time slow down.
Xue Xingqi held Pei Nan’s hand and stripped both of them naked, piece by piece.
“I’ll be gentle, okay?” Xue Xingqi’s kisses clung to Pei Nan’s skin, spreading from his neck to his shoulders, leaving a trail of red marks like plum blossoms wherever he passed.
Pei Nan was even more restless than Xue Xingqi. He arched his waist slightly and wrapped his legs around Xue Xingqi’s waist, crossing them over him. “You did it plenty a few days ago. Stop talking nonsense.”
He reached out both hands to pull Xue Xingqi down, biting his ear and whispering two ambiguous words.
Xue Xingqi’s heart skipped a beat. He looked at Pei Nan, who was lying on the petals teasing him regardless of the consequences, and leaned down with a light laugh.
The beautiful petals bounced and fell, covering Pei Nan’s face, which was a mix of sweat and tears.
Wet lips and tongues eventually found their way into his mouth, carrying a few petals along in the tangle. The rich fragrance of roses spread from between his teeth to his very soul. In a trance, Pei Nan thought he had been transported to a rose garden.
But when he opened his eyes, there was only pure white before him. The snow fell silently, painting everything over, creating an illusion: as if only he and Xue Xingqi were left in this world.
Pei Nan moved his eyes as his wandering spirit gradually returned to his body.
Xue Xingqi was embracing him from behind as they stood by the window. One hand supported his lower abdomen while the other rested against his chest supporting him because he was pregnant and his boyfriend didn’t want him touching the cold glass, and resting against his chest for the same reason shielding Pei Nan from most of the chill. He kissed Pei Nan’s sweaty, flushed face and asked if the scenery was beautiful and if this was the snow he liked.
Pei Nan’s limbs were weak and he was out of breath. Every breath left a mark on the glass window, gradually blurring the entire view. He struggled to raise his hand and grabbed Xue Xingqi’s damp hair. “You… was this really necessary?”
Just because he talked a bit of trash, did he have to be worked to death like this?
“I couldn’t help myself. Are you uncomfortable anywhere?” Xue Xingqi was like a large, lazy cat that had just eaten its fill, refusing to let go of the person in his arms.
Pei Nan shook his head. He was extremely comfortable so comfortable he wanted to fall asleep immediately.
Xue Xingqi kissed his cheek affectionately. Taking Pei Nan’s hand, he used their fingertips to draw a heart together on the misted glass.
“Nannan, baby, wife. Merry Christmas.”
