Shocking! The Protagonist of the Mpreg Story Is a Straight Man - Chapter 24
On the winding mountain road, a pitch-black Hummer drove by at a steady speed. Pei Nan was behind the wheel of the long-awaited vehicle, beginning the journey home.
The vantage point he had during his time as a lop-eared rabbit wasn’t even worth mentioning; the feeling of sitting in the passenger seat versus the driver’s seat was entirely different. With his hands on the steering wheel the comfortable grip, the silky-smooth handling Pei Nan felt an adrenaline spike so sharp he almost wanted to floor the accelerator. Fortunately, the presence of the car’s owner beside him and the contents of the trunk reminded him to watch his speed.
The trunk was packed with bags of agricultural products scavenged from the guesthouse. There were two large buckets of fish alone, kept alive and splashing, intended as gifts for people back at school.
Since it was a memento of his first time fishing, Xue Xingqi didn’t stop him. He had simply gone behind Pei Nan’s back during dinner to swap the fish with a fresh batch from the owner, fearing that the fish Pei Nan so kindly brought back for everyone’s meal might actually make people sick.
Once they returned, the training for Pei Nan and his teammates would become even more intense. Aside from classes, they would spend almost the entire day soaked in the swimming pool. If Xue Xingqi wanted to take Pei Nan out of the school gates again, he would likely have to ask the coach for a leave of absence.
However, if Pei Nan didn’t leave the campus, his safety would be better guaranteed. Until they thoroughly investigated who that shadowy figure was, Xue Xingqi actually agreed with Coach Wang’s management methods.
Yet, logic was one thing; Xue Xingqi’s lingering attachment to these past two days was plain to see.
“Are you going back to stay at the school dorms tonight?”
“Of course. I have to distribute these fish to everyone quickly, otherwise, they’ll turn into stinky fish.” Pei Nan shot Xue Xingqi a look a small bit of pride mixed with a hint of playfulness that pierced right into Xue Xingqi’s heart.
The mountain sky was a brilliant blue. Radiant sunlight passed through the windshield, resting on the side of Pei Nan’s face.
In this moment, time seemed to slow down, as if he and Pei Nan could spend their entire lives in this never-stopping vehicle.
In this moment, time also seemed to move fast so fast that Xue Xingqi instantly imagined every brilliant, sunny day of their lives together from here on out.
Xue Xingqi had never affirmed it so clearly and brightly: Pei Nan would be in his future. He had to be there.
Pei Nan was still talking about who he was going to give the gifts to and where to put the leftovers.
“Do you think I can release them into the lake at our school?”
“Probably. Ask your campus gardener. If not, you can give them to the staff at the swim center; they’d probably love them.”
“Oh, right. You’re pretty smart.”
Pei Nan looked at Xue Xingqi as he said this, a look that made Xue Xingqi desperately want to rub his head.
When the two arrived back at school, they went straight to the gymnasium. Pei Nan had called Chen Bin in advance, telling him to bring a few people over to pick up the fish, dried fruits, and walnuts. “I caught these all by myself.”
The college students loved it. They came out wearing beach trunks and bathrobes, several of them in flip-flops, pitter-pattering and dripping water everywhere.
Once they arrived, they surrounded Pei Nan to chat, asking about where he went and what he did. Aside from the fact that his companion was a guy like Xue Xingqi, everyone thought the trip sounded wonderful. “Life’s looking pretty good for you, huh!”
Pei Nan chuckled, thinking that it really was quite good and even Xue Xingqi was included in that “good” evaluation.
He watched Xue Xingqi distribute the items with a faint smile, chatting as he handed them out. He had integrated with the team almost entirely; some people even seemed closer to Xue Xingqi than to him. Pei Nan felt as if he had suddenly stepped out of a blind spot, truly realizing for the first time that Xue Xingqi was someone who shone brilliantly no matter where he was.
Excellent in academics, outstanding in ability, and possessing a character that after his observations could be described as flawless. Add to that a good family background and an easygoing personality; surely no one could resist Xue Xingqi’s charm.
He looked at Xue Xingqi’s face and added as an afterthought: And that face is even more handsome than his car.
“Nan-ge, what are you staring at?” Chen Bin nudged Pei Nan. “Xue Xingqi has a meeting soon and said he has to leave. Go say a few words to see him off.”
Pei Nan snapped back to reality and waved at Xue Xingqi with a smile.
The car soon vanished from sight. Everyone grabbed their things and headed into the facility. They carried the fish out in the open; those who didn’t know better would have thought the swimmers had just fished them out of the lake themselves. It was a miracle they weren’t reported by other students.
It was on the night of their return to school that the mission progress updated once again.
The “Clinging Value” (Intimacy) was already overflowing. This time, 419 and Pei Nan obediently waited for midnight. Pei Nan wanted to see what kind of tricks this dog of a system (419: ?) was going to pull now.
As they expected, the mission update didn’t delay for a single second. But upon opening the mission info, Pei Nan wished he were in a state of unconscious sleep.
Mission: Please accumulate 3 hours of kissing with the neighboring school’s grass (hearthrob). Countdown: 7 days. Mission Penalty: To be updated.
Pei Nan read it three times in a row. His face went from blue to green, then to red, and finally turned a ghostly white that left 419 very worried about its host’s mental and physical state.
“What’s wrong, Host?”
“I’m thinking about whether I can dismantle you.”
Pei Nan grabbed 419. The jelly-like yellow ball was squeezed into various shapes in his palm; its quality far surpassed any stress toy on the market, yet it still couldn’t soothe the complex emotions inside Pei Nan.
But he had to admit that when he saw the mission requirements, he wasn’t surprised. After all, having endured this oppression and torment for so long, he had long since figured out what the main system was up to. It claimed to be for his “body modification,” but in essence, it just wanted him to fall in love. Even the person was designated; every mission was pointed toward a single goal.
If he hadn’t been able to catch 419 without turning into a rabbit, and if it weren’t for the sudden electrical currents inside his body, he would feel like he was in an immersive dream. When he woke up, he would still be an ordinary college student who had just started school.
419 lay obediently in Pei Nan’s hand, changing shapes according to the pressure of his fingers, hoping to share some of Pei Nan’s burden whether it was pressure or emotion.
“Forget it. Going to sleep. I have early training tomorrow.”
Pei Nan flopped back onto his bed, but he couldn’t fall asleep as easily as he claimed.
He stared at the ceiling with his eyes wide open. Neither he nor Chen Bin were people who paid attention to details, and no one had pulled the curtains today. Therefore, even with the lights off, the dorm was bright enough to see the furniture clearly. Pei Nan’s gaze landed on the beam of light hitting the ceiling.
His mind was a mess. He seemed to be thinking about many things, yet he also seemed to be just spacing out. He didn’t even know when he finally drifted off.
When he woke up in the morning, Pei Nan painfully covered his eyes with his arm.
He had dreamed. The person in the dream had a very beautiful lip shape not too thin, not too thick with a healthy, ruddy color. They were a bit warm, very soft, and had a very refreshing mint scent.
He knew he had seen the owner of those lips before.
Pei Nan couldn’t suppress the deafening sound of his heartbeat in his chest. He even felt as though he might die of a sudden heart attack in the next moment.
What interrupted him was the ringing of his phone. The three words displayed on the screen had never looked so “friendly” before.
