She Seems to Struggle with Having a Wife - Chapter 31
The gathering was held at an upscale private club. On the way there, Qin Mu listened as Yan Huan briefly mentioned that the friends attending included some she had known since childhood, others she had met later through mutual acquaintances. They were a mix of singles and married couples, with varying ages, but all were warm and enthusiastic people.
Qin Mu nodded in acknowledgment. Following the GPS, she arrived at the club’s entrance, where a glance around revealed an array of luxury cars, resembling a grand auto show. Had it not been for Yan Huan flashing her membership card, Qin Mu’s car would likely have been mistaken for an outsider’s and turned away.
The two got out of the car, and a valet approached. Qin Mu stepped aside, circling the front of the vehicle to join Yan Huan. Just as they were about to enter, another car pulled up behind them. Hearing the horn, Qin Mu turned and recognized the license plate.
She paused and called out to Yan Huan, who was still walking ahead, “Yan Laoshi, Wei Qing, Wei Laoshi is here.”
Yan Huan stopped and turned to look.
A black car slowly approached, it was indeed hers.
The occupants of the car glared at Qin Mu, their expressions growing increasingly unpleasant, especially Wei Qing’an. As she stepped out and walked over, her eyes seemed to blaze with a fire ready to erupt, as if she wanted to devour Qin Mu whole. Meeting her gaze, Qin Mu felt no worry or tension, but rather a chill creeping up her spine perhaps due to the cool night air.
When Wei Qing’an drew closer, Qin Mu was surprised to see that she had taken rare care with her appearance today. Without her glasses, she was dressed formally: a thin, black round-neck inner layer that highlighted her slender, pale swan-like neck, and lips adorned with lipstick that accentuated her fair, delicate skin.
She wore a long, fitted black trench coat that hugged her figure, exuding an authoritative, mature charm. Her slender calves were exposed, and she sported a pair of stiletto heels. Her usually straight hair had been styled into soft, voluminous waves.
For a moment, Qin Mu stared, almost failing to recognize her. Tonight, Wei Qing’an was stunningly beautiful, breathtakingly so. Her eyes, in particular, were captivating enough to make one want to gaze at them endlessly.
Wei Qing’an walked directly toward Qin Mu with an unwavering gaze. Unable to avoid it, Qin Mu averted her eyes, letting them fall on the trench coat.
It was then that Qin Mu realized the coat Wei Qing’an was wearing was actually hers, one she had bought recently and worn only once. Had Wei Qing’an deliberately dressed up this morning before leaving home? But why would she dress like this for work? Who was she trying to impress?
Wei Qing’an drew nearer, almost reaching her. Unwilling to meet her eyes, Qin Mu looked down again and noticed the stiletto heels. Just last night, when picking her up from the high-speed rail station, she had been in so much pain she could only wear flip-flops. How could she be wearing high heels now? Was her foot no longer hurting?
Gao Jingchen followed behind Wei Qing’an, his expression no better than hers, as if he owed someone money.
Yan Huan, oblivious to their tense exchange, stepped forward with a smile and said, “Oh, you two came together? And our Wei Laoshi your style has completely transformed today. How did you suddenly become so sophisticated? That figure, wow, it’s enough to make one’s imagination run wild.”
Wei Qing’an stood in front of Qin Mu with one hand in her pocket, not answering the question. Her gaze shifted from Qin Mu to Yan Huan beside her, and she calmly retorted without a trace of emotion, “And what about you two? How did you end up together?”
As she spoke, Gao Jingchen stopped and stood beside Wei Qing’an. Both were tall, their expressions stern, and dressed in black. Standing shoulder to shoulder, they exuded an overwhelming presence. Qin Mu and Yan Huan simultaneously frowned and took a step back.
If only they had worn high heels tonight.
The height difference was truly infuriating.
Annoyed by how dazzlingly dressed the other two were like peacocks flaunting their feathers Yan Huan felt a surge of resentment. She abruptly wrapped an arm around Qin Mu and said with a forced smile, “Of course, I came with Qin Mu to attend the gathering. What’s it to you?”
Yan Huan’s sudden move caused Qin Mu to stumble, nearly falling into her embrace.
Sure enough, the two in front immediately fixed their eyes on Yan Huan’s arm around Qin Mu, their possessiveness blatantly undisguised. Especially Wei Qing’an, who recalled how Qin Mu had slept in her arms the night before, clenched her fists tightly.
Qin Mu knew Yan Huan was deliberately provoking them, but she disliked the atmosphere of others vying for her attention. Moreover, with Wei Qing’an involved, Qin Mu’s heart would always lean toward Wei Qing’an; she never cared for anyone else’s feelings.
Qin Mu took a step forward, subtly freeing herself from Yan Huan’s grasp, and said, “Teacher Yan, since they’re here, I won’t be joining you. Have fun, and if you need anything, feel free to call me. My phone will be on.”
“You’re already here,” Yan Huan shot Wei Qing’an a meaningful look.
Was it really appropriate for her to have fun while her wife went home to an empty house?
Wei Qing’an understood the implication, but she couldn’t help wondering why the two of them were together so late and how Qin Mu knew Xiao Huanzi was getting ready. Had their relationship progressed this far?
She didn’t respond, but Gao Jingchen beside her spoke up, “Come along. You and Xiao Huanzi have been working hard lately. I’ll cover the bill tonight consider it a chance to relax.”
“No, I’m heading home. Goodbye.”
Everyone seemed to be in a sour mood tonight, and Qin Mu decided it was best not to get involved in the gathering to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.
As Qin Mu turned to leave, just as she was about to pass by Wei Qing’an, Wei Qing’an reached out and wrapped an arm around her from the front, her fingers tightening slowly around Qin Mu’s waist. She leaned in and insisted, “Going home alone is boring. Come on.”
With that, Wei Qing’an switched arms and half-carried Qin Mu into the club, following the server leading the way. Qin Mu looked up at her as they walked, placing her right hand over Wei Qing’an’s arm around her and frowning as she tried to pry her fingers loose. “It hurts.”
Wei Qing’an glanced down at her, loosening her grip slightly. Though still simmering with quiet anger, she pulled Qin Mu a little closer.
Both were wearing trench coats today, and their height difference was just right. From behind, they looked exceptionally well-matched. But precisely because of that, Gao Jingchen refused to give up. Having agreed to fair competition that afternoon, he would never willingly concede Qin Mu to anyone.
Without another word, he strode forward in large steps, deliberately positioning himself beside Qin Mu. Wei Qing’an froze for a moment, her face clearly showing displeasure, so she wrapped her arms around Qin Mu and swapped places with her. Gao Jingchen, unwilling to give up, circled around to the other side of Qin Mu, only for Wei Qing’an to move Qin Mu back to the side away from him.
Back and forth it went, Qin Mu being shifted around by Wei Qing’an like a toy and surprisingly, Qin Mu didn’t even get angry.
Yan Huan, standing by the door and watching, thought to herself:
These two are really something.
Normally, this kind of high-end private club didn’t allow outsiders, but they had a friend who was a shareholder, so after a quick word, Qin Mu and Wei Qing’an registered and went inside. Wei Qing’an then handed a card to the attendant.
The attendant wasn’t new to serving Wei Qing’an and understood her meaning as soon as he took the card. This time, however, Wei Qing’an added, “Just for the lady and me.”
The “lady” referred to Qin Mu. How could she let someone else pay for her wife’s expenses, especially not Xiao Chenzi.
“Understood,” the attendant replied, pocketing the card.
It was Qin Mu’s first time in such a place, and she was struck by the sheer opulence even the elevator was adorned with dazzling, gold-trimmed decorations. She figured their friends must all be people of considerable wealth and status.
“After all, Teacher Wei is the eldest daughter of the Wei family.” Qin Mu suddenly recalled Yan Huan’s words from that day. Until now, she hadn’t fully grasped what it meant for Wei Qing’an to hold that title, but in this moment, she truly understood the weight of being the Wei family’s eldest daughter.
The elevator arrived, and the attendant led them to a private room.
Inside, five people three women and two men were already seated. The music blared deafeningly from the speakers, and the flashing lights were almost blinding. When they saw Wei Qing’an and the others, they set down their wine glasses and cheered as they approached: “Wow, our three lucky stars have finally arrived! You three are such rare guests!”
Yan Huan, being the eldest, stepped forward first and hugged them, complaining with a pout, “I’ve been swamped lately, and it’s all Xiao Chenzi’s fault. He keeps threatening me into working overtime, I just came straight from the office. He has no idea how to be considerate.”
Straight from the office? Wei Qing’an caught that line. So, Qin Mu had specifically gone to the company to pick up Xiao Huanzi?
The first to greet them, a curly-haired socialite, took Yan Huan’s hand and scolded Gao Jingchen, “Xiao Chenzi, that’s not right. Work is never-ending. Don’t exhaust my Huanhuan, or I won’t let you off the hook.”
In response to her threat, Gao Jingchen stated plainly, “I never forced her to work overtime, Sister Yue. Don’t believe her nonsense two out of every three things she says are made up.”
“Hmph,” Yan Huan shot him a glare.
After catching up with the two of them, Li Ziyue turned and noticed Wei Qing’an standing tall and slender nearby. With an excited “Wow,” she rushed over, wrapping her arms around Wei Qing’an’s slender waist and pressing close as she said, “Xiao Anzi, long time no see! I’ve missed you to death.”
Wei Qing’an: “…”
Qin Mu, standing behind her: “…”
Li Ziyue hugged Wei Qing’an’s waist tightly, giving it a few firm squeezes, and said with a flirtatious tone, “Xiao Anzi, your waist has gotten even more toned! How about spending the night with your big sister?”
Despite the blaring music in the private room, Qin Mu clearly heard what the person said, and she was now seething with anger. And those wandering hands could they please stop groping around?
Wei Qing’an, looking utterly disgusted, pushed the person away and said, “Sister Yue, you’re married with kids. No hugging and clinging you’ll ruin my reputation.”
“Oh? Little An cares about her reputation now?” Another woman, around thirty with a somewhat attractive appearance, approached. She tilted her head to glance at Qin Mu behind Wei Qing’an and asked, “That girl behind you could she be your girlfriend?”
At Lin Peini’s remark, the others finally noticed Qin Mu, who had been shielded by Wei Qing’an. They crowded around Qin Mu, examining her from all angles as if she were some rare antique. Some even reached out to pinch her.
Qin Mu didn’t seem to mind and even smiled as she greeted them. However, Wei Qing’an wasn’t pleased. She strode over, wrapped an arm around Qin Mu, and protectively said, “She’s like a little sister and might be shy. Don’t scare her.”
Lin Peini looked at the two of them and clicked her tongue. “Little An, something’s up. Looks like we’ll have some juicy gossip to chew on tonight.”
Wei Qing’an smiled faintly without a word, casting a meaningful glance at Qin Mu.
Her earlier conversation with Xiao Chenzi had been anything but pleasant.
After everyone exchanged greetings and sat down around the oval table with couches on either side, the group settled into their respective spots, the others on one side, and the “Three Lucky Treasures” on the other. Qin Mu sat next to Wei Qing’an, who had pulled her into the seat, but on Qin Mu’s left sat Gao Jingchen.
This kind of drama was the last thing Qin Mu wanted to experience.
She’d rather sit awkwardly with Wei Qing’an at home.
Wei Qing’an unbuttoned her trench coat, holding a glass of red wine as she chatted casually with the others. While listening, Qin Mu suddenly remembered Wei Qing’an’s feet and glanced down. The woman had actually taken off her shoes, her feet resting in her high heels. Her heels were covered with band-aids. If it hurt so much, why insist on wearing them?
Was she prioritizing style over comfort?
Qin Mu frowned. She’d have to figure out a way to convince her not to wear high heels on the way back. Last night, she had noticed blisters on Wei Qing’an’s heels. If she kept this up, she wouldn’t be able to wear shoes at all in a few days.
