She Seems to Struggle with Having a Wife - Chapter 15
The two walked over, and Wei Qing’an spotted them first.
She had been laughing happily, and when she caught sight of them out of the corner of her eye, she thought she had mistaken them for someone else, so she didn’t pay much attention.
But by the time she suddenly realized who they were, Gao Jingchen and Qin Mu were already standing right in front of the two of them.
Wei Qing’an looked up and met Qin Mu’s gaze, a hint of pleasant surprise in her eyes.
Without caring about the others present, she secretly waved her injured right hand toward Qin Mu, signaling her to come sit beside her.
Qin Mu noticed her little gesture but didn’t move. After all, her boss had brought her here, so he should sit first.
“Oh, Xiao Huanzi, long time no see!” Gao Jingchen bent over and happily hugged Yan Huan across from him.
Yan Huan pushed him away with genuine disgust, saying, “Don’t hug me, get lost. We literally saw each other just a month ago.”
“Ahem.” Wei Qing’an signaled again.
Qin Mu glanced at her boss and reluctantly went over to sit down.
Wei Qing’an, satisfied, picked up her glass of water.
She leaned slightly closer to Qin Mu.
Gao Jingchen, rejected by Yan Huan, straightened up. When he turned and saw Qin Mu had already taken a seat, he sat down next to Yan Huan.
Only then did Yan Huan notice Qin Mu across from her. Her eyes suddenly lit up, and after sizing her up for a moment, she nudged Gao Jingchen with her elbow and said, “Who’s this beauty? So pretty could she be your girlfriend?”
“Cough, cough, cough.”
Wei Qing’an choked on her water before she could swallow it. Luckily, she hadn’t taken a big sip, so it wasn’t too embarrassing.
Qin Mu instinctively wanted to grab a tissue for her, but with the other two sitting across from them, it didn’t feel appropriate to show concern, so she stayed still.
Since she didn’t help, the other two didn’t move either.
Wei Qing’an had to lift her head herself, take a tissue, and wipe the water droplets from the corner of her mouth.
Yan Huan crossed her arms and looked at Wei Qing’an as if she were an idiot. “Your hand’s injured, but you can’t even drink water without choking?”
Though her words sounded reproachful, her tone was still caring.
“Is your hand injured?” Only then did Gao Jingchen notice and asked with concern, “It looks pretty serious. How did it happen?”
Wei Qing’an tidied up, placed the used tissue aside, and said with flushed cheeks, “I accidentally cut it at work. Ahem.”
As she spoke, she continued to cough softly.
Her neck was even turning red from coughing.
“Is it serious?” Gao Jingchen asked again.
Wei Qing’an waved her hand gently and said, “Not serious. It’s already scabbing over. It’ll heal in a little while.”
“That’s good.”
After expressing concern for Wei Qing’an, Yan Huan turned her attention back to the aloof Qin Mu and steered the conversation back to the earlier topic. “President Gao, aren’t you going to introduce the beauty you brought?”
Gao Jingchen didn’t dare joke about Qin Mu and replied seriously, “This is the vice president of my company, Qin Mu. She’s also in charge of this new project. You should get to know her, you’ll have plenty of chances to meet if we collaborate in the future.”
Qin Mu greeted politely, “Hello, Teacher Yan.”
She had heard of Yan Huan’s name long ago she was a standout artist of the new generation. However, she was notoriously elusive and usually only accessible through specific departments. She rarely participated in commercial collaborations, almost never.
Hearing the word “collaboration,” Yan Huan immediately straightened up, placing her hands between the two of them and saying seriously, “President Gao, I haven’t agreed to work with your company, Liunian, yet. Don’t start cozying up to me now.”
Gao Jingchen pouted and whined pitifully, “Don’t turn me down. I’ve already been rejected once.”
“Oh? Who else did you invite?”
Yan Huan asked with a hint of curiosity, slowly picking up her water glass and taking a small, delicate sip.
Gao Jingchen replied frankly, “Ling Xi.”
Both Wei Qing’an and Yan Huan at the dining table froze for a moment.
Wei Qing’an instinctively glanced at Qin Mu.
But Qin Mu sat perfectly straight, unmoving, showing no reaction whatsoever to the name.
“Oh, Ling Xi,” Yan Huan murmured thoughtfully, taking another sip of water and lightly tapping the side of her glass with her fingertip.
The atmosphere noticeably stalled, but Gao Jingchen, absorbed in his own thoughts, didn’t seem to notice.
Shortly after, a server arrived with their food, breaking the speculative mood between the two women, and the matter was temporarily set aside.
During the meal, Yan Huan couldn’t resist wanting to ask Wei Qing’an something, but as the words reached her lips, she glanced at the people beside and across from her and swallowed her questions back down.
The four of them ate as the sky gradually darkened.
Brilliant lights flickered on around them.
Wei Qing’an’s right hand was inconvenient, so Yan Huan had cut her steak for her and poured her wine.
Qin Mu noticed this and felt a twinge of sourness in her heart, but she didn’t mistake Yan Huan and Wei Qing’an’s relationship for anything more. The dynamic between them was more like an older sister caring for an injured younger sister nothing like the feeling between Wei Qing’an and Ling Xi.
Qin Mu was the first to finish eating. She set down her knife and fork, took a few sips of juice, and sat quietly waiting for the others.
Not long after she finished, Yan Huan also finished her meal.
“President Qin, do you have a partner?” Yan Huan suddenly asked her.
Both Qin Mu and Gao Jingchen looked up at the same time.
Qin Mu hesitated for a moment before replying, “No.”
She and Wei Qing’an were secretly married and hadn’t told anyone. Without Wei Qing’an’s permission, even if Yan Huan was her senior, Qin Mu had no intention of revealing it. Unless Wei Qing’an decided to make it public one day, she would tell everyone then.
To Gao Jingchen, this response was equivalent to Qin Mu directly denying the person who had brought her lunch at noon. He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling pleased, and even began eating his steak with larger bites.
Wei Qing’an said nothing and continued eating.
“Is it because you haven’t met someone you like?” Yan Huan pressed, casually recommending Gao Jingchen beside her. “What do you think of our President Gao? I’ve known him for a long time, he’s not only handsome but also considerate and dedicated. Would you consider him, President Qin?”
This time, Wei Qing’an reacted, her face darkening.
It seemed this woman couldn’t stay idle without stirring up trouble.
After Yan Huan finished speaking, Qin Mu refused without hesitation, “President Gao is a great person, but he deserves someone better. I’m not that person.”
The implication was clear: she wasn’t interested.
She only liked Wei Qing’an.
Though it wasn’t the first time Qin Mu had rejected him, Gao Jingchen still felt a sting. The small spark of hope that had ignited when Qin Mu denied having a partner was instantly doused by her cold refusal.
Nevertheless, Gao Jingchen maintained his gentlemanly demeanor and defused the situation, saying, “Don’t go around asking unnecessary questions out of boredom. Although Qin Mu is my subordinate at the company, in private, we’re just friends.”
Yan Huan, chastised by him, made a zipping motion over her lips.
But she still had a good impression of Qin Mu. If Qin Mu were to become part of the Gao family someday, her grandmother would be delighted.
After dinner, the four of them moved on to another activity. They had originally planned to go to Gao Jingchen’s private club, but halfway there, he received a call. A friend was heartbroken over a breakup and asked to meet for golf right away, sobbing so hard he could barely speak.
Yan Huan heard and urged, “Hurry up and go. A broken heart is serious business your friend might do something drastic.”
Gao Jingchen put down his phone helplessly, looking reluctant as he said, “That guy who was just crying to me is the blind date Grandma set up for you. Ever since you rejected him a month ago, he’s been pestering me nonstop.”
“Maybe you should…”
Gao Jingchen gave her a mischievous once-over.
Yan Huan’s expression instantly changed, and she dodged him as if avoiding the plague. “You hurry up and go comfort him right now, quick!”
Why had she gone abroad a month ago?
Wasn’t it because of this very blind date?
She had never met a guy so clingy before. Wow, from the moment he woke up until he closed his eyes at night, during that time, Yan Huan felt like her head was about to explode.
“Hmph.” Gao Jingchen shook his head, turned to Qin Mu and Wei Qing’an, and said, “I’ll head out first. You two have fun. And you two, as older sisters, take care of my employee, okay?”
Yan Huan urged impatiently, “Okay, okay, okay.”
With that, Gao Jingchen left, sighing heavily.
Left with just the three of them, Wei Qing’an spoke up, “Since Xiao Chenzi is gone, there’s something I want to tell you.”
“What is it?” Yan Huan asked, puzzled.
Half an hour later, at the café.
Yan Huan stared dumbfounded at the two people across from her.
Qin Mu was also frowning, asking Wei Qing’an uncertainly, “Does Teacher Yan really know about your marriage?”
“She knows,” Wei Qing’an nodded seriously.
But judging by Teacher Yan’s expression.
It didn’t seem like she knew at all.
“What?!” After a long pause, Yan Huan suddenly exclaimed.
Both Qin Mu and Wei Qing’an were startled.
The café was relatively quiet, and her outburst drew the attention of nearby customers and staff.
Yan Huan bit her lower lip, leaned back in disbelief, her bright eyes wide as she stared at the two of them. Then she cautiously asked, “Xiao Anzi, is your wife really the person sitting next to you?”
Wei Qing’an nodded again. If she still didn’t believe it, Wei Qing’an was prepared to go home and show her the marriage certificate.
After biting her lip, Yan Huan started chewing on her index finger, as if her whole body was struggling to accept the fact that Qin Mu was Wei Qing’an’s wife.
“Wait,” Yan Huan suddenly leaned forward and said to Qin Mu, “Back at the dinner table, when I asked if you were seeing anyone, why did you say you weren’t? You are!”
She pointed at Wei Qing’an beside her, looking a bit wronged.
Qin Mu explained, “Because we’re keeping our marriage a secret. We haven’t told anyone yet, so I had to deny it.”
“Oh,” she seemed to understand a little.
No wonder when she introduced Qin Mu to Xiao Chenzi earlier, she had denied it so quickly her wife was sitting right beside her. But Xiao Anzi had really grown up; her patience had improved so much that she could hold back from refuting it.
After calming down for a while, Yan Huan finally accepted the fact, though she still found it somewhat unbelievable.
Even though she hadn’t watched Xiao Anzi grow up, she had at least been a part of her life. When Xiao Anzi had told her over WeChat that she was married, aside from shock, Yan Huan hadn’t felt much else.
But now, seeing the two of them sitting right in front of her, it was hard to believe, and her heart felt strangely empty.
Yan Huan suppressed the flicker of sorrow in her eyes, regained her composure, and pulled out her phone from her pocket with a cheerful grin. “Well then, Little Mumu, let’s add each other on WeChat.”
“Uh! sure.”
Little Mumu, Teacher Yan really knew how to address people.
Qin Mu took out her phone and added her as a friend.
As the two exchanged contacts, Wei Qing’an suddenly felt a sense of relief.
Had she managed to help Qin Mu integrate into her life?
After adding each other, Qin Mu turned off her phone. Wei Qing’an looked at the two of them with a satisfied expression, speaking in a tone reminiscent of an elder giving advice, “Ah, it’s a good thing it’s Qin Mu. When you kept it from me and refused to tell me who it was, I thought it might be Ling Xi.”
Upon hearing this, Qin Mu’s expression abruptly shifted.
Her fists, resting on her knees, slowly clenched.
Wei Qing’an didn’t notice the change in Qin Mu and continued in a low voice, “I haven’t been in touch with her for a long time.”
“Huh? Why?”
Yan Huan was the one who asked, but Qin Mu wanted to know as well.
Weren’t they just together yesterday.
