She Seems to Struggle with Having a Wife - Chapter 14
Qin Mu didn’t speak further, focusing intently on changing her dressing.
The wound had already begun to scab over and was healing quite well.
After tending to Wei Qing’an’s injury, Qin Mu put the medical kit back in the cabinet, then went to her room to grab her pajamas before heading into the bathroom.
She was exhausted from the events with Ling Xi that day and didn’t feel like talking to Wei Qing’an. So, after finishing her shower, Qin Mu completed her skincare routine and went straight to bed. With the lingering effects of the wine gradually setting in, she fell asleep almost the moment her head hit the pillow.
Wei Qing’an, having had her dressing changed, had initially planned to go to the study and read for a while. But for some reason, her mind was filled with thoughts of Qin Mu her drunken demeanor, the way she deliberately kept her distance, the focused expression as she tended to her wound.
No matter what Qin Mu was doing, Wei Qing’an found herself thinking of her.
It was as if she were under a spell.
Feeling unsettled, Wei Qing’an closed her book and returned to the bedroom.
The main light in the room was off, with only a small bedside lamp casting a warm glow. The soft light illuminated Qin Mu’s smooth shoulders and slender arms, while the thin blanket draped over her revealed the gentle curves of her figure. Her dark hair spilled across the pillow.
From a distance, it looked like a captivating painting of a sleeping beauty.
Wei Qing’an lowered her gaze, walked over, and pulled the blanket up to cover Qin Mu’s shoulders. Then, she lay down beside her and fell asleep.
Ring, ring, ring…
The next morning, the familiar sound of the alarm clock broke the silence.
Bright sunlight streamed through the window, bathing the two entwined figures.
Qin Mu was the first to wake. She opened her slightly swollen eyes and reached out to turn off the alarm. As she brought her arm back to rest on her forehead, trying to clear her mind, she noticed the familiar weight of an arm draped over her waist. The slightly rough palm had even slipped down to rest on her hipbone.
Frowning, she turned her head and found Wei Qing’an’s face inches from her own so close that a slight lift of her head would bring their lips together.
Her head throbbed with a dull ache, so she didn’t push her away.
Afterward, she got up, washed up, and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
Still bothered by the incident with Ling Xi the previous night, Qin Mu finished her meal, grabbed her bag, and left for work without waking Wei Qing’an.
At Flowing Years, in Gao Jingchen’s office.
Qin Mu slid a blue folder across the desk to him. “Ling Xi has completely declined any possibility of collaboration. Here are a few alternative artists I’ve selected. While they may not have Ling Xi’s level of fame, their craftsmanship is exceptional and worth considering.”
Gao Jingchen picked up the folder and skimmed through the artists’ resumes. Individually, they were all talented, but compared to Ling Xi, they still lacked a certain level of recognition and popularity.
“Are there really no other options?” he asked, closing the folder with a hint of dissatisfaction.
“There is one,” Qin Mu replied, pulling out her phone. After searching for a name on Baidu, she handed the phone to Gao Jingchen. “Her name is Yan Huan. She’s an even more renowned artist than Ling Xi. She was actually my first choice, but when I contacted her team, they said she’s traveling abroad and won’t be back for about six months. I have her contact information, but her phone is turned off, so there’s no way to reach her.”
Hearing the name, a smile instantly spread across Gao Jingchen’s face. He lightly tapped the desk in excitement. “Of course! Xiao Huanzi! How could I have forgotten about her?”
Qin Mu looked surprised. “You know her, boss?”
“Know her? I know her all too well,” Gao Jingchen chuckled, handing the phone back to her. “She’s another one of my grandmother’s prized disciples and also the senior apprentice of Wei Qing’an, whom I introduced you to the other day. Leave Xiao Huanzi to me, I’ll handle the arrangements. You just focus on preparing the rest of the work.”
“Alright.” Qin Mu took back her phone.
The entertainment industry is a small world, and it turns out the art world is too.
After discussing work, Qin Mu stood up to leave. As soon as she closed the office door, she received a WeChat message from Wei Qing’an.
Qin Mu opened it while walking.
Wei Qing’an: After working for so many years, this is the first time I’ve been late.
Wei Qing’an: Why didn’t you wake me?
Qin Mu replied dismissively: I don’t usually wake you either.
Wei Qing’an: You can from now on.
Qin Mu: We’ll see.
After sending the last reply, Qin Mu turned off her phone and ignored her, returning to her office to continue working.
At noon, Zhang Fan knocked and entered.
Qin Mu glanced up and then continued working with her head down.
Zhang Fan walked up to her desk and said with a grin, “Boss Qin, the front desk just called. There’s a handsome guy downstairs looking for you. He said his name is Lin Yan.”
Lin Yan?
Qin Mu instinctively looked up.
She frowned, thought for a moment, then flipped open a file and asked, “Did he say what he wanted?”
“No.” Zhang Fan shook his head.
Qin Mu paused her reading again. She set down her pencil, rubbed her aching temples, and said, “Alright, I understand. Go have lunch. You don’t need to bring me anything.”
“Okay.” Zhang Fan turned and left, mulling over Boss Qin’s last words, no need to bring her lunch?
Could it be that Boss Qin’s boyfriend was bringing her lunch?
If that were the case, then that unlucky Li Jiashan would probably be crying his eyes out in the bathroom.
Qin Mu closed the file, placed it in a drawer, set her computer to sleep mode, and went downstairs. On the first floor, she saw Lin Yan, dressed in a sharp suit and holding a lunchbox.
When Lin Yan saw Qin Mu step out of the elevator, a smile instinctively spread across his face. He approached her and said, “I thought you might refuse to see me again, like last time.”
Qin Mu gave a faint smile. “I’m not too busy today.”
Lin Yan chuckled sheepishly and handed her the lunchbox. “My mom made this and asked me to bring it to you. There’s spare ribs and cola chicken wings, and at the bottom is a chicken and mushroom stew. It’s really fragrant.”
The dishes sounded delicious, but they would have taken hours to prepare. Qin Mu felt she didn’t deserve such effort.
Instead of taking it, she said, “Please don’t let your mom do this again. She’s not in good health, and cooking like this is exhausting.”
“It’s fine.” Lin Yan pushed the lunchbox toward her again. “My mom’s health has improved a lot. She made this especially for you. Please take it.”
Out of respect for his mother’s kindness, Qin Mu had no choice but to accept.
But the gesture felt overwhelmingly heavy.
After taking the lunchbox, she spoke earnestly to Lin Yan, “I’ll accept it today, but this afternoon, I’ll call your mom and ask her not to do this again. As for you, focus on your work and take good care of your mom. I have someone looking after me.”
She deliberately emphasized the last sentence.
Lin Yan had been ready to argue after her initial refusal, but upon hearing her final words, he was completely stunned.
Qin Mu noticed his expression but didn’t feel the need to explain. She added straightforwardly, “I should head back now. There’s still some work to handle at the office. Make sure you eat well.”
“Oh, okay.” Lin Yan barely registered her words, responding out of habit.
She said she had someone looking after her.
Did that mean she was in a relationship?
By the time Lin Yan processed it, Qin Mu had already taken the lunchbox and returned to the elevator.
Leaning against the elevator wall, Qin Mu stared at the lunchbox in her hand. Her mood felt as heavy as the container itself.
Initially, she had only helped pay her aunt’s medical bills at the hospital. Over the past two years, from school to the company, Lin Yan had been working around her, occasionally bringing her meals like today, and even sending expensive gifts and flowers during holidays.
Qin Mu had refused and told Lin Yan not to send anything anymore, but it would still happen again, just like now.
Her aunt’s intentions were understandable, but the key issue was Lin Yan.
He shouldn’t waste his time on her.
Beep, the elevator doors opened.
Qin Mu sighed and stepped out.
As she entered the office, lost in thought, she didn’t notice someone walking toward her. Only when she was about to collide did Qin Mu snap back to reality, stumbling backward abruptly.
Gao Jingchen, seeing Qin Mu startled, chuckled and said, “What were you thinking about? You weren’t even looking where you were going.”
Qin Mu let out a breath. “Just something on my mind.”
Gao Jingchen noticed the lunchbox in her hand, and his expression instantly turned serious. “Did that person bring you lunch again? He’s really persistent.”
Hearing his sarcastic tone, Qin Mu felt even more frustrated.
So, she changed the subject and asked him, “Boss, why did you come to my office? Is there something you need?”
“Yes,” Gao Jingchen gritted his teeth and looked at Qin Mu again. “I just got in touch with Xiao Huanzi. She returned to the country yesterday, and I’ve arranged to meet her tonight. You’re coming with me.”
“Okay,” Qin Mu nodded.
After that, Gao Jingchen glanced once more at the lunchbox in Qin Mu’s hand, then stomped off angrily.
At six in the evening, it was time to clock out.
Qin Mu grabbed her documents and bag and left the office on time. She walked over to Zhang Fan’s workstation and tapped twice on the desk.
Zhang Fan, who had been dozing off, jolted awake at the sound, wiping the drool from her mouth with her sleeve. Dazed, she said, “Director Qin, what do you need? Do you want coffee or something to eat?”
Qin Mu shook her head helplessly. “It’s time to go home. The boss and I are meeting a new artist.”
“Okay, Director Qin,” Zhang Fan replied, still half-asleep.
It didn’t look like she would wake up anytime soon.
A hint of concern crossed Qin Mu’s face. She then walked over to Li Jiashan’s workstation and said, “Make sure you take Zhang Fan home later. She’s been tired all day, and I’m worried something might happen to her on the way.”
“Alright,” Li Jiashan stood up, his gaze as gentle as warm sunlight.
After giving her instructions, Qin Mu took the elevator down to the basement, drove to the company entrance, and sent a message to Gao Jingchen.
A few minutes later, Gao Jingchen came out and got into the passenger seat.
Qin Mu started the car and drove away from the company.
On the way, Qin Mu asked him, “Is there anything I should keep in mind when meeting Teacher Yan later?”
Gao Jingchen, replying to a WeChat message, said, “No need. Tonight is just a casual dinner to catch up, no work talk. By the way, Xiao Anzi will be there too. It’s been a while since the two of you last saw each other, so it’s a good chance to reunite.”
Wei Qing’an is coming too?
Hearing her name, Qin Mu suddenly remembered that the person had sent her a picture of lunch earlier, and she hadn’t replied yet.
It wasn’t intentional, she had just forgotten.
She’d reply next time.
At an upscale Western restaurant in the city center.
Qin Mu parked the car and went inside with Gao Jingchen.
Since reservations were required, Gao Jingchen gave Yan Huan’s name at the entrance, and the server led them directly to the innermost table an outdoor spot overlooking the river.
“This way, please,” the server guided them ahead.
Qin Mu followed behind Gao Jingchen and from a distance, spotted Wei Qing’an with a bandage on her right arm, talking to someone across from her.
She was still dressed in a shirt and suit.
However, she wasn’t wearing glasses, and her hair was loosely draped over her shoulders, giving her a less intellectual and elegant vibe, but adding a touch of delicate, cool charm that was quite alluring.
