She doesn’t want to pretend to be an Omega either! - Chapter 16
Niu Feng was completely bewildered, wondering if he had misheard her.
“What did you say?” he asked, needing confirmation.
Seeing the “pure yet foolish” look on his face, Wen Mo knew she had probably asked the wrong person.
“Forget it,” Wen Mo waved her hand. “Just pretend I never asked.”
Niu Feng: “…”
Why does she always love messing with my head?
“Sister, doing that is really,” Niu Feng swallowed the words “asking for a beating.” He didn’t dare be too reckless, so after a moment of deliberation, he said, “Leaving me hanging like that.”
Wen Mo pretended not to notice his stiff correction and smiled. “Fine. Let me ask you this then: have you ever been in a relationship?”
Niu Feng: “…”
Damn it, my mental state is crumbling!
Niu Feng clutched his chest in an exaggerated motion. “That cuts deep, Sister Mo! Just because I’ve never been in a relationship doesn’t mean I’m not qualified to hear your question! You can’t discriminate against a ‘single-since-birth’ dog like this!”
“Don’t you go slandering me!” Wen Mo retorted. “Who says I’m not a ‘single-since-birth’ too?”
Niu Feng’s lip twitched. “Stop joking. Your dating experience is so rich it makes every Alpha out there green with envy!”
Wen Mo huffed twice.
If she really had that much experience, would she be stuck asking him for advice right now? She felt wronged deep down, but she couldn’t say it. Instead, she adopted a “believe what you want” attitude and said, “Believe it or not, I’ve never actually been in love.”
Niu Feng cupped his fists in a respectful gesture. “Understood. My Sister travels through a forest of ten thousand flowers without a single petal sticking to her robe—a true romantic legend for the ages.”
Wen Mo: “…”
You little sycophant.
“What I asked earlier was: if an Alpha friend of yours suddenly said they had a secret crush on you, how would you react?” Wen Mo repeated the question; leaving him hanging really was a bit uncharitable.
Niu Feng finally confirmed that he hadn’t misheard. He frowned. “Sister Mo, why would you have such a weird question?”
As he spoke, his gaze naturally fell on Wen Mo’s fair, soft, and cute face. Suddenly, a lightbulb went off. “Wait, did an Alpha tell you they have a crush on you?”
Niu Feng stunned himself with his own words.
An Alpha crushing on another Alpha? Listen to how ridiculous that sounds!
The dynamic between Alphas was different from other genders. Even two Omegas falling in love sounded more plausible than two Alphas; at least Omegas wouldn’t have pheromone repulsion.
Alphas were natural-born fighters. They possessed an inherent sense of suppression and resistance toward one another, a trait most evident in their pheromones. If two particularly incompatible Alphas caught even a faint whiff of the other’s scent, it could trigger irritability or aggression, making it nearly impossible for them to remain peacefully in the same room.
Under normal circumstances, one could control their pheromones, but accidents always happened.
Those with weak self-control could lose it with the slightest provocation, and one person’s pheromone riot could trigger a chain reaction in others. Pheromone outbreaks were common. Even if you could control yourself in those situations, what happened when you wanted to take the relationship further?
If you could keep yourself from becoming hyper-aggressive or over-stimulated in that scenario, you’d have to be a saint.
So, unless you were willing to have a Platonic relationship for the rest of your life, it was extremely difficult for two Alphas to reach a “happily ever after.”
Besides, how could two people in love be content with never fully possessing one another?
Especially for a gender like Alphas, who possessed such intense possessiveness. Over the long course of evolution, they had even developed the ability to “completely mark” their Omega partners to declare sovereignty.
The thought of being unable to fully possess a partner, Niu Feng felt a pang of regret just thinking about it. Therefore, he was certain he would never like an Alpha.
To put it simply: they were naturally incompatible!
As an Alpha, how “out of your mind” would you have to be to go and like another Alpha?
The more Niu Feng thought about it, the more baffling it became. Staring at Wen Mo’s cheeks—which were cuter than many Omegas’—he asked another question. “Sister Mo, could there be some kind of misunderstanding?”
What Niu Feng actually wanted to say was: Maybe they don’t even know you’re an Alpha?
But you couldn’t just say that to an Alpha’s face. No Alpha could stand hearing that; it was a direct challenge to their dignity.
“No.” Seeing his complex expression, Wen Mo figured he was overthinking things. Fearing another deadly misunderstanding, she decided to be blunt. “Actually, I asked a friend if he had a crush on me. He didn’t reply for several minutes, and when he did, he didn’t give a straight answer. Do you think that’s a normal reaction?”
Niu Feng didn’t expect that development. His first instinct was that Wen Mo was being a bit full of herself. If it were an Omega or a Beta, it would make sense—Wen Mo was rich and beautiful, after all.
But an Alpha? Where did this confidence come from?
“Uh, why do you think he likes you?” Niu Feng asked tactfully.
It wasn’t that he was a coward; it was just that Wen Mo’s past temper had been incredibly unpredictable.
When she was in a good mood, everyone in the dorm was her “good brother.” She’d treat them to big meals and take them to high-end spots. But when she was in a bad mood, she treated them like dirt, ordering them around and taking her anger out on them.
They had wanted to rebel, of course, but the three of them came from ordinary families. They couldn’t win against Wen Mo.
Whether it was a deliberate power move or not, Wen Mo had once taken them to meet some of her “shady” associates. Even the boss of those thugs had acted humble in front of her. If they ever laid a finger on her, she could probably ruin their lives with a single phone call.
Based on her old personality, they had every reason to believe she would do it.
So, the three of them had long ago decided to stay quiet and stay in line. Plenty of people were afraid of her—even that mob boss—so there was no shame in them being afraid, too.
Through their diligent endurance, they had survived over a year and were now used to this mode of interaction. Wen Mo’s sudden change of heart had almost thrown them off again.
She seemed to have a better temper now, but who was to say this wasn’t just another phase of her unpredictability?
Niu Feng was used to coddling her, so even with the current “nice” Wen Mo, he habitually held back, trying not to say anything that might trigger her.
Wen Mo knew her roommates were afraid of her, but she didn’t care enough to try and fix the relationship. As a girl, she needed to keep some distance from these men anyway. Being too close would be uncomfortable.
In human relationships, it was best to let things happen naturally—unless interests or lives were on the line. Since there was no conflict of interest here, she felt the current distance was just right.
Hearing Niu Feng’s question, Wen Mo thought for a moment. “I’m not particularly nice to him, our personalities are completely different, and we’re from different worlds. Yet, he insists on being my friend and takes great care of me. Last night, he even insisted on escorting me back to school. Isn’t it a bit weird for one Alpha to escort another?”
In her original world, that would just be one guy insisting on walking another guy home.
Totally gay vibes!
“He even checked in this morning to see if I was up and wanted to buy me breakfast. And like I said, he waited several minutes to reply and dodged the question, anyway, there are plenty of other details that make me think he has a crush on me,” Wen Mo added.
Niu Feng was curious now and listened intently. “Well, it’s not unusual for friends to look out for each other. Maybe he just really wants to be your friend? Plenty of people in this school want to be your friend, Sister Mo, they just don’t get the chance. Since he got the chance, of course he’d cherish it. Besides your, uh, personal charm, your family background makes a lot of people want to suck up to you. You should be used to that by now, right?”
Niu Feng felt a bit weary.
Given Wen Mo’s status as the sole heir to the Wen family, he found it hard to believe she didn’t realize how many people were desperate to get on her good side. Did her brain turn ‘simple and sweet’ along with her personality?
He couldn’t bring himself to say, “He’s just trying to ride your coattails,” as that would crush her confidence.
“As for not replying, maybe he was busy? And dodging the question maybe he thought you were joking?” As Niu Feng spoke, he watched her face. When he saw her look of realization, he breathed a sigh of relief.
It seemed he had guessed right.
To an Alpha, being crushed on by another Alpha would be somewhat disgusting, right? If Wen Mo were truly enjoying the vanity of Alphas liking her, she would have just bragged about it. She wouldn’t be genuinely agonizing over it and asking for his opinion.
Niu Feng smiled, feeling proud of himself. Habitually, he threw in one more bit of flattery. “But then again, who knows? You’re incredibly charming, Sister Mo. Maybe there really is an Alpha out there willing to ‘bend over’ for you?”
Niu Feng’s words were a bit too brainwashing.
Consequently, when Wen Mo saw Wei Mingshu that evening—standing in his light-colored suit amidst the glitz and glamour of the grand ballroom, looking every bit the elegant and gentle prince, the only thing that came to her mind was Niu Feng’s phrase: “Bend over.”
Wei Mingshu was standing sideways to her, giving Wen Mo a perfect view of his firm, pert backside. It was well-shaped and looked remarkably “slappable.”
Wen Mo couldn’t help but stare for a moment.
If he bent over, it would definitely look good. A perfect heart shape.
