She Comes Into My Dreams Every Night - Chapter 8
Chapter 8: Darkness
The sound of cicadas at night hummed outside the window. A crescent moon hung in the sky, and the mountain forest night was exceptionally dark, making the bright moon appear overly luminous.
Su Huaiwang looked at the two little ones in front of her, hesitated for a moment, but still put their leashes on.
If she were going out alone, the two dogs could certainly run freely, but today was different; today, there was another person with them.
Lin Jue.
The thought of Lin Jue instantly made Su Huaiwang feel weary of life. The girl thought of her as a friend, yet Su Huaiwang wanted to sleep with her, which made her feel utterly ashamed in Lin Jue’s presence.
Da Hui held its neck up with a bit of arrogance, allowing Su Huaiwang to attach its handsome leather leash.
Smelling the sweet scent of dog shampoo on the dogs, Su Huaiwang felt a little better. She wrapped her arms around Da Hui’s neck and sighed deeply while hugging it.
Then, she stood up.
“Let’s go.”
Pushing open the door, the cool air of the summer night flowed, devoid of human sounds. The farmhouses at the foot of the mountain had extinguished their lights early, leaving only the large lamp of the Party branch still shining.
The mixture of artificial and moonlight vaguely illuminated Lin Jue’s face, making her look exquisite, like a treasure that didn’t belong to the mortal world.
Su Huaiwang’s breath hitched, and after the initial surprise, a look close to pain appeared on her face.
She suddenly felt less morally bankrupt. Given Lin Jue’s appearance, could she really be blamed?
Having finally suppressed the turmoil in her heart, she walked forward a few steps, leading the two dogs.
“Good evening,” Lin Jue greeted her with a smile, shifting her gaze from the moon to focus entirely on Su Huaiwang.
“Good evening.”
“Could you lend me a leash?” Lin Jue hadn’t forgotten the excuse she used to get Su Huaiwang to meet her. She looked at Su Huaiwang’s hand, which was tightly strained by the leashes, and her comfortable mood, brought on by the moonlit night, slightly worsened.
“Sure, which one do you want?” Su Huaiwang raised both hands: “Da Hui, or Little Yellow?”
Lin Jue looked at the two open palms presented to her, restrained the impulse to place her hand on one of them, and chose the thicker leash belonging to Da Hui.
“Da Hui, then,” she smiled, her eyes briefly sweeping over the German Shepherd.
This was undoubtedly a well-trained guard dog, with shiny fur, well-defined muscles, and sharp, loyal eyes. Its full set of fangs were tightly shut, ready to snap at any moment.
Su Huaiwang squatted down and patted Da Hui’s head: “Be good when you walk with this elder sister, okay?”
Then, she stood up and said to Lin Jue: “He’s very energetic and sometimes charges quickly. You might get hurt if you don’t hold on tight. Are you sure? You can take Little Yellow instead if you prefer.”
Little Yellow, hearing its owner offer to send it away, immediately tucked its tail between its legs and whined twice at Su Huaiwang, seemingly begging for mercy.
Lin Jue remained gentle and soft: “It’s fine. I’ll hold him tight.”
The German Shepherd was unusually well-behaved this time. It didn’t rush up to bite her, but its two eyes were fixed intently on her.
Lin Jue ignored it. Her time with Su Huaiwang was too brief to spare any attention for it.
The two walked up the mountain path. Although called a mountain path, it wasn’t exactly wild. The government had allocated funds to build the road and install lights, so it was easy to walk on.
The refreshing night breeze blew, and Su Huaiwang’s heart finally relaxed a little.
“With you here, both of them are much better behaved tonight,” Su Huaiwang told Lin Jue with a smile.
“Is that so? Then it seems I’m useful. Aren’t they usually well-behaved?” Lin Jue asked, her peripheral vision catching the small dog bounding ahead. Little Yellow, which had just been happy, instantly acted as if someone had stabbed its butt with an ice pick, looking around suspiciously.
Su Huaiwang didn’t say directly whether they were good or not, only sighing: “Dogs have their nature. If you choose to love them, you have to learn to accept their less good side.”
“What if that side is unacceptable to you?” Lin Jue’s tone was somewhat strange.
Su Huaiwang thought for a moment: “I haven’t encountered that yet… For example?”
“For example, what if it’s actually not a dog, but a cat, and it’s been deceiving you all this time.”
Su Huaiwang laughed: “What kind of scenario is that?” She really has a rich imagination, no wonder she’s young. Su Huaiwang selectively ignored the fact that she, too, was a young person.
“If it were a cat, there would be nothing wrong with that, would there? Cats are cute too. And deceiving me isn’t a huge problem. We can’t always understand each other; many times, we are deceiving each other.”
For example, I am deceiving Lin Jue right now. She was supposed to be interacting with her as a friend, but every night she was having erotic dreams about her. Su Huaiwang’s mind began to sink again.
“You’re right, my example was poor. Is there any animal you dislike?”
Su Huaiwang turned to look at her: “Are you really taking this all the way? Generally speaking, I’ll continue to love it no matter what it turns into.” She looked at the two dogs running and leaping in the distance, her eyes filled with tenderness.
Lin Jue didn’t miss this tenderness. Jealousy, like tightly tangled black threads, surfaced again. Fortunately, it was dark, and Su Huaiwang wouldn’t notice.
“Why?”
The girl’s voice was originally clear, with a translucent quality, but now it sounded strangely dry.
Su Huaiwang thought about whether she had any throat lozenges at home and if she should give her a pack, while answering: “We’ve been together for so long; you can’t just erase that with a single sentence like ‘it’s not a dog.’ Besides, even if it’s not a dog, as long as it likes me, wouldn’t I continue to like it too?”
Lin Jue’s lips trembled, unsure of what to say.
“You are a very good person.”
“Thanks for the compliment…?” Su Huaiwang was a little confused, wondering why she was suddenly complimenting her: “You are a very good person too.”
In the shadow invisible to Su Huaiwang, Lin Jue clenched her fists tightly. Blood seeped from between her fingers, staining her clean, pale skin with an eerie color.
She deliberately stepped back, allowing more shadows to engulf her body, leaving only the beautiful face that Su Huaiwang liked.
But Su Huaiwang took this movement as a sign of discomfort.
She worriedly stepped closer: “Is something wrong?”
“Nothing,” Lin Jue managed a strained smile.
Malevolent spirits are easily agitated at night. After hearing Su Huaiwang’s recent words, her mind was filled only with the roar of why those two dogs can and she cannot. She was currently restraining herself, relying on a small area of lucidity to stop herself from abducting Su Huaiwang.
Lin Jue’s behavior only confirmed Su Huaiwang’s suspicion.
“If you feel unwell in the village, you need to say so right away. Medical resources here are scarce. Although you’re young, toughing it out is never a good idea. Let’s go home first. I can give you a basic check-up, alright?”
During her two years of solitary living, driven by necessity, Su Huaiwang had acquired quite a bit of medical knowledge.
“You want to… invite me over?” Lin Jue’s breathing suddenly became heavier.
“Huh?” Su Huaiwang frowned slightly, feeling that something wasn’t quite right.
“I mean, it’s so late, intruding upon you might not be good.”
Never invite a malevolent spirit to cross the threshold of your home at night.
But Su Huaiwang didn’t understand this taboo. Her eyebrows relaxed: “We’re both girls, what’s the big deal.”
I was the one being fucked even in the dream, Lin Jue can completely relax. I have confidence in myself.
“Then…” Lin Jue had just opened her mouth when a sharp sound, like a scream or a tire deflating, came from behind, followed by the barks of the two dogs.
Su Huaiwang quickly turned around. The two dogs, who had been playing happily, were now barking excitedly at the darkness in front of them.
“What’s going on?” Lin Jue asked, just in time.
Su Huaiwang’s expression became serious: “I don’t know, I’ll go take a look.”
She turned around, took two steps forward, and then suddenly fainted, collapsing into Lin Jue’s arms.
Black mist billowed from Lin Jue’s body. The girl’s long, beautiful swan neck was covered in black threads laced with a bloody color, extending all the way to her small, exquisite chin.
She looked significantly more delicate and slender than Su Huaiwang, yet she held her steadily in her arms.
Her amber eyes stared intently at the mass of darkness in the wilderness.
“Trying to devour me?”
The static darkness stirred, churning and howling. Large faces, some weeping bloody tears, others with mouths split to their ears, were mixed within it, impatiently lunging toward Lin Jue.
The two dogs had lost their former majesty, their tails tucked, but they remained loyally positioned in front of their owner.
Lin Jue waved her hand, and black mist covered them.
“Be careful. You cannot die.”
She lowered her eyelashes, rubbing her cheek against the forehead of the person in her arms. The long-awaited feeling of contact made every pore on her body almost expand, as if she were back in their previous nightly encounters.
Lin Jue wore a look of infatuation on her face, while the black mist behind her ruthlessly charged into the mass of darkness, violently tearing it apart.
“Good thing she didn’t see it.”
Lin Jue carefully protected the back of Su Huaiwang’s head. That thing was too ugly. She was afraid Su Huaiwang would get an eye infection just by looking at it.
After all, not every malevolent spirit possessed a beautiful human body like hers.
The thought made the corner of Lin Jue’s lips curl up again, involuntarily.
“Alright, time to go.”
She called to the two dogs. The mass of darkness had been devoured until not a single trace was left.
The two dogs finally understood who the good person was. They approached her, wagging their tails, their noses sniffing her all over.
“Starting to like me now? How pragmatic,” Lin Jue thought about patting their heads, but her hands were busy holding Su Huaiwang, so she let the black mist do it instead.
The two dogs, whose heads were patted by the black mist, were both scared and happy, exhibiting an extremely strange state.
They circled Lin Jue, wanting to see what was wrong with Su Huaiwang.
“She’s fine. I just made her fall asleep,” Lin Jue patiently explained to the two dogs.
She wasn’t sure if they understood, but after her explanation, the two dogs clearly relaxed a little.
Their tails were up again. Little Yellow proudly ran to the very front, leading the way, while Da Hui trotted close beside Lin Jue, occasionally looking up at the soundly sleeping Su Huaiwang.
Lin Jue walked slowly, holding Su Huaiwang. The moonlight fell on her, feeling as warm as a hot spring.
But even the moonlight, which she usually loved the most, wasn’t as warm as the person in her arms.
Lin Jue held her even tighter.
The things Su Huaiwang liked, she also wanted to try to like. She also hoped that one day Su Huaiwang could forgive her, just as she forgave those two dogs.
And love her.
