She Comes Into My Dreams Every Night - Chapter 73
Chapter 73: Happiness
Su Huaiwang awoke in a mist. Lin Jue was no longer beside her.
The car was parked steadily in an open space. The surroundings were silent, like a graveyard.
Milky white mist clung to the car window, peering in. Looking out, the entire world was a blanket of white, not even a faint outline visible.
The blanket covering her slid off as she moved. Su Huaiwang’s face was still slightly dazed.
Her coat was, for some reason, on the driver’s seat. She rummaged through it and pulled out her phone from the pocket.
A dial tone rang, but the call couldn’t connect. She paused for a moment, then noticed the phone displayed “No Signal.”
Looking back at the vast, hazy mist outside the car, strangely, she didn’t feel much fear.
Perhaps her brain had long associated the mist with Lin Jue.
Thinking of it that way, the mist not only ceased to be frightening but became somewhat endearing.
Su Huaiwang found it amusing herself.
She opened the car door. The mist, defying the laws of physics, didn’t rush in. Instead, it clustered eagerly at the doorway. The moment she stepped out, it clung to her impatiently.
Su Huaiwang laughed, raising her hand to brush away the mist from her upper body, but she couldn’t do anything about the mist covering her lower body.
Clinging tightly to her, but not impeding her movement, Su Huaiwang simply walked with it.
Walking through the mist, she had no sense of direction, just following her own instincts.
She hadn’t walked far before an outline actually began to appear in the mist.
Su Huaiwang’s eyes lit up, and she quickened her pace.
The familiar back figure gradually became clearer. Without thinking, she broke into a run until she embraced the person.
“Why did you leave,” she complained, resting her head on the person’s shoulder.
“I saw you were sleeping soundly, so I didn’t disturb you.” Lin Jue turned her head to shoo away the mist and affectionately kissed her cheek.
Su Huaiwang squinted, enjoying her lover’s spontaneous show of affection: “Why did we come here again? Your…”
“Small world,” Lin Jue supplied the concept she was unfamiliar with: “It’s quieter here, good for you to sleep.”
Su Huaiwang didn’t speak, just rubbed against her again.
She had indeed slept comfortably. She didn’t know if it was due to extreme sleep deprivation or the tranquility of the small world.
“Then why are you standing here?”
“Well… I had some things to do.”
“What things?” Su Huaiwang released her embrace.
Lin Jue hesitated, a slight blush rising on her beautiful face:
“I want to… uh… make this place prettier.”
Su Huaiwang didn’t quite understand: “What do you mean?”
Lin Jue’s gaze drifted, finally pointing forward.
The mist dispersed following her command, revealing the scenery that had been deliberately obscured.
Weary-faced Chang ghosts were carrying building materials and tools, slowly dismantling the original mud houses and preparing to lay new foundations.
Su Huaiwang looked surprised: “Why the sudden change?”
She remembered what this place looked like last time. Lin Jue had said her small world was Nanguan Village, so the roads and houses inside were the original appearance of Nanguan Village, except for the villa on the mountainside.
Lin Jue cleared her throat: “When I lived alone, it didn’t matter.”
After all, a vengeful ghost is sustained by resentment. If I don’t have some dark dreams in a familiar environment, what if I accidentally achieve enlightenment?
“If you’re going to come in too, that place wouldn’t be very good.”
She didn’t want Su Huaiwang to have to look at that run-down place.
“Me?” Su Huaiwang was even more surprised, pointing to herself: “Am I going to live here too? Here?” She hesitated.
Lin Jue quickly explained: “No! I just mean occasionally! If you come to stay occasionally, after all, my small world is quite nice. It’s warm in winter, cool in summer, and there’s no noise…”
Lin Jue was already rambling.
Su Huaiwang couldn’t help but laugh: “Alright, I know what you mean. Stop talking.”
Lin Jue scratched her face awkwardly, looking a little flustered, less like an ancient ghost and more like a naive girl trying her best to please her beloved.
“So, what do you want to rebuild it as?”
Lin Jue pointed to the other side: “That side is already finished. Do you want to go up and see?”
Su Huaiwang gladly agreed.
The mist in front of them parted, and the two ascended a winding staircase.
Lin Jue held her hand.
Their joined palms were dry and cool, yet Su Huaiwang felt a hint of nervousness from the occasionally uncontrollable strength in that hand.
She curled her lips, looking up at Lin Jue, who walked ahead and dared not turn back.
They climbed the hillside one after the other.
The scenery on the hillside was vastly different from what Su Huaiwang had imagined.
The clouds suddenly parted, and the sunset spilled onto the meadow, staining the tender green a golden yellow.
All the mist was piled up at their feet. Although it was just a small hill, it felt like they were on a peak, stepping on a sea of clouds.
Facing this scene, Su Huaiwang was momentarily lost in thought.
Lin Jue raised her eyebrows, looking proud: “How is it?”
“It’s beautiful.” Su Huaiwang recovered, only then realizing that she actually knew this hillside.
The crooked tree in front of them, the easel and other art supplies placed beneath it, and even the small wildflowers blooming not far away.
Everything was familiar to her.
“Is this the hillside we often went to?”
“Mhm.”
Lin Jue smiled. Her smile, set against the sunset, was too enchanting. Su Huaiwang could almost hear her own heartbeat.
An identical smile involuntarily appeared on her face.
Su Huaiwang took two steps forward, squatting down to look at the beautiful blooming wildflowers.
“I remember they withered once summer was over.”
At the time, she had been sentimental about the changing season for quite a while, though she hadn’t told anyone.
Unexpectedly, in Lin Jue’s small world, they were still blossoming.
Lin Jue also squatted down beside her:
“In the small world, they can bloom forever.”
“Oh?”
Su Huaiwang hugged her knees and turned to look at her.
Lin Jue waved her hand. The surrounding light instantly dimmed, turning into the starless black of night. She waved again, and the night was pierced. The morning sun was born in a blue amniotic fluid.
In a single breath, the world transformed.
Lin Jue exhaled, relaxing. She rested her head on her knees, her eyes curved in a smile:
“Everything in the small world is under my control. If I wish it, they will never wither.”
Su Huaiwang’s gaze toward her carried a hint of helplessness. Finally, she leaned in and gently pecked the waiting lips, then rubbed against her.
“Good.”
The curve of Lin Jue’s mouth was impossible to suppress. She leaned in to continue the kiss but was held back by Su Huaiwang.
“I want to sit over there, may I?”
Lin Jue had no reason not to nod.
The spot next to the easel was where they usually sat. So, as soon as Su Huaiwang spoke, Lin Jue knew exactly where she meant.
The grass beneath them was prickly, but once they got used to it, it was no longer uncomfortable, only reassuring.
Su Huaiwang looked at the mist coiling around her fingertips, surprisingly finding that she could control the progress of the small world to some extent.
For instance, now she could make the ever-present mist disperse, revealing the construction site that was still ongoing.
The Chang ghosts below were diligently working, even supervising each other to ensure their tears of blood didn’t contaminate the building materials.
“Are they called… Chang ghosts?”
Lin Jue nodded, her expression a bit cold: “Simply put, they are the people who once harmed the vengeful spirit in this body. After death, they became the wraith’s Chang ghosts. Unless I reincarnate, they will be trapped in my body forever.”
“I see.” Su Huaiwang acknowledged, then fell silent again.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Jue asked her.
“Nothing, just wondering what they said to you at the Ghost Punishing Office yesterday.”
Lin Jue shrugged: “Nothing major. I just made a Heavenly Dao Vow.”
“Heavenly Dao Vow?”
“It’s an unbreakable oath made under the witness of the Heavenly Dao. If broken, the consequences are severe: never being allowed to enter reincarnation for all eternity.”
Su Huaiwang inevitably tensed up: “What oath did they force you to make?”
Lin Jue smiled: “They didn’t force me. I proposed it myself.”
“Why?” Su Huaiwang frowned.
“If I want to continue living in the human world, I have to ease their nerves. So, I swore that I would not kill any innocent person.”
“But what if there’s an accident…”
“There won’t be. The Heavenly Dao Vow is bidirectional. They also made a corresponding Heavenly Dao Vow. Only this way can we coexist peacefully.”
“But…” Su Huaiwang was still worried.
Lin Jue turned slightly, cupping her face, her amber eyes fixed on her: “Why are you so worried about me? Don’t worry. I won’t have any accidents before you go.”
Su Huaiwang was uncontrollably drawn into her pupils. She opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything.
“I…” She lowered her head, placing her hands over the hands cupping her face: “You know, accidents always happen suddenly. No one can predict them.”
“No,” Lin Jue continued to look at her, her gaze serious and firm: “I can promise you that I will always be by your side. Accidents will never affect me. If you need it, I can make a Heavenly Dao Vow.”
Su Huaiwang couldn’t help but laugh: “A Heavenly Dao Vow? Why is it always a Heavenly Dao Vow? Do you need to make a Heavenly Dao Vow for this too?”
A little embarrassed, Lin Jue lessened the grip on her hands: “Uh… I’m more familiar with the Heavenly Dao Vow…” After all, it was one of the two clear and complete memories she had right after she was born.
Su Huaiwang caught her hand as it gradually slipped, lowering her eyes: “It’s okay. I don’t need you to make a Heavenly Dao Vow. I trust you.”
The tension finally eased from Lin Jue’s face, and she revealed a brilliant smile.
“By the way, there’s one more thing I want to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“What is your obsession now?”
Su Huaiwang closed her eyes.
The end of summer. A clear-eyed girl. She asked the Heavenly Master this question.
It is because of obsession that ghosts continue to cling to this cruel world.
For Lin Jue, the sins directly related to her had been cleared. If she wanted to continue existing, the most likely path would typically be to find new objects of hatred.
That’s why most vengeful ghosts eventually turn into malevolent ghosts.
But for some reason, Lin Jue hadn’t chosen that path. Instead, she had continuously retreated into Nanguan Village, dreaming her dark dreams in her own little world.
Unwilling to leave, yet unwilling to hate.
Even the Heavenly Master wasn’t sure what obsession was keeping her alive in this world now.
Su Huaiwang opened her eyes. In front of her was the vengeful ghost, her head bowed, lost in thought.
“My obsession is…” she started.
If there truly are gods and buddhas in the world.
If the gods and buddhas filling the sky could truly hear her voice.
The girl lay in the snow, blood gushing from her feet. The enormous hunting trap bit tightly into her bones. Every step was a searing pain.
The sound of dogs barking, people cursing, and torches swaying—getting closer and closer.
She was panting, severely losing blood. Her lips were paler than the snow on the ground.
Her fingers were stuffed with ice and snow, and she struggled to crawl forward.
If there truly are gods and buddhas in the world.
If the gods and buddhas filling the sky could truly hear her voice.
“Happiness. I want to live happily.”
Her happiness was right here.
