Chapter 39: Occasionally Having the Urge to Slap Someone
A bothersome person had arrived.
Through the fence, Lin Jue coldly watched the tall woman waving at her.
Last night was another calm dream.
Presumably, this was because of this person.
Did she replace me and satisfy Su Huaiwang?
The thought alone filled Lin Jue’s entire dry heart with anger.
The wraith suppressed her emotions and walked forward, the deliberately concealed black energy clawing and gnashing behind her, wanting to crush the person in front of her.
“What’s wrong?”
Tu Zhizhuo rubbed her arms, suspiciously looking up at the bright, sunny sky.
For some reason, does the temperature feel much lower…?
She quickly dismissed this minor detail and grinned at Lin Jue:
“Do you want to come over for dinner tonight? I bought seafood. You guys don’t eat seafood often up in the mountains, do you?”
Lin Jue’s expression softened slightly. Even she wouldn’t completely disregard the goodwill shown by others.
But the jealousy was still there, following her like a shadow.
She nodded to signal that she would go, but still said, “I don’t particularly like seafood.”
Tu Zhizhuo was surprised. “Allergic?”
“No, I just simply dislike it.”
“What a coincidence!” The woman’s eyes lit up, which confused Lin Jue slightly. “Su Huaiwang doesn’t like it either! You two won’t have any issues at the dinner table in the future!”
Lin Jue was uncharacteristically silent.
What does this person mean by “in the future”…?
Taking advantage of her momentary distraction, Tu Zhizhuo reached out, patted her on the shoulder twice, and gave a thumbs-up. “Come over for dinner tonight. I’ll let you see my cooking skills!”
Lin Jue looked at her, a faint hint of distaste in her gaze.
Tu Zhizhuo became even more excited. What do you call a couple’s compatibility? This is couple’s compatibility!
She quickly sized up Lin Jue, stroked her chin in satisfaction, and turned to leave.
…
Lin Jue did not like Tu Zhizhuo.
She disliked any place Tu Zhizhuo occupied.
She disliked Tu Zhizhuo inserting herself between her and Su Huaiwang.
Therefore, for a rare change, when eating with Su Huaiwang, she couldn’t manage a smile.
The girl’s face was as placid as still water, watching the two people in front of her bicker.
“Oh, come on, just try a little! This is delicious! Very expensive! Very fresh!”
“No way! I saw what it looked like! I’m not eating a giant meaty worm!”
“Isn’t that a bit rude to people who like seafood?”
“I don’t care! Go away!”
Lin Jue looked up.
At this moment, Su Huaiwang was much more lively than when she was with her.
Although her brows were furrowed, she was active and vibrant, playfully fencing with Tu Zhizhuo using her chopsticks.
Just one glance was enough to make her feel uncomfortable.
Lin Jue lowered her head again.
Tu Zhizhuo was 25 years old this year, with at least several decades of life ahead of her.
Did she have to tolerate her for decades?
Why not just…
Her dark thoughts were interrupted as a circle of an unknown dish appeared in her bowl.
Su Huaiwang had put it there and was complaining softly to her.
“She’s too extreme. She said she’d make seafood, and she made a whole table of it, without considering those of us who don’t like seafood.”
“Try this squid. She makes squid well; it’s not too fishy. I really like it.”
Lin Jue blinked and nodded emphatically, startling Su Huaiwang.
“What’s wrong?” Su Huaiwang hesitated, then cautiously asked, “…You’re not allergic to seafood, are you?”
She finished with a slight fury. “Did she drag you over here even though you’re allergic to seafood!”
The noisy voice next to them was shouting, “Do you think I’m that kind of person? Can’t people have a little more trust in each other?” but Lin Jue automatically tuned out the noise.
She showed a smile. “No, I just… haven’t eaten it much.”
Su Huaiwang suddenly realized and immediately turned to scold, “I told you not to make so many things with shells!”
Then, disregarding the innocent Tu Zhizhuo, she moved her chair closer to Lin Jue and started meticulously shelling the seafood.
“This is mantis shrimp. It’s hard to peel. Be careful not to cut your hand. You have to use your chopsticks first…”
Before long, Lin Jue’s bowl was piled with various kinds of pale, white meat.
Tu Zhizhuo watched, her eyes red with envy, and bitterly poked at the two pitiful little pieces of meat in her own bowl:
“Doesn’t anyone want to shell mine for me?”
Su Huaiwang glanced at her, puzzled. “…Wouldn’t it be faster to do it yourself?”
As she spoke, her hands kept working, continuing to shell for Lin Jue.
She saw Lin Jue eating quickly and assumed she liked it. Since she didn’t particularly care for it, she decided to spare her hands to peel more for her.
A piece of shrimp meat dropped into a bowl, but it wasn’t Lin Jue’s bowl; it was Su Huaiwang’s.
Su Huaiwang looked up in surprise and found that Lin Jue had started shelling her own seafood at some point, and the first piece she peeled had been given to her.
Seeing Su Huaiwang’s gaze, Lin Jue smiled faintly. “I learned. Give it a try.”
Since Lin Jue said so, Su Huaiwang stopped helping her peel and turned to wipe her hands with a napkin.
But when she looked back, her bowl was already full of meat.
Su Huaiwang: ?
Beside them, Tu Zhizhuo’s face was mournful. “Your learning ability is too strong, isn’t it? If you peel any more, I’ll have no meat left to eat! You’re feeding it all to that blockhead! What a waste of good food!”
Lin Jue paused her shelling motion and looked plaintively at Su Huaiwang.
Su Huaiwang couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
“Still laughing!” Tu Zhizhuo glared at her and reached out her claw towards Su Huaiwang’s bowl. “Share some with me! Do you even understand what you’re eating?”
Su Huaiwang slapped her hand away, a hint of playful excitement in her voice. “Lin Jue peeled this for me. Why isn’t anyone peeling for you?”
This comment made Tu Zhizhuo even angrier, but she couldn’t retaliate, so she just glared at her and continued her trash talk.
Su Huaiwang ignored her, happily eating the meat in her bowl.
Suddenly, her cheek was poked by a finger.
Su Huaiwang looked up in confusion and saw a completely innocent-looking Lin Jue.
“What is it?”
Lin Jue held out another plate of meat, freshly peeled, with a small mountain of shells piled up. “Do you want more?”
Su Huaiwang looked at the plate of meat, feeling Tu Zhizhuo’s gaze boring into her back, and her scalp tingled slightly. “Maybe not…”
The look of disappointment on Lin Jue’s face was visibly obvious, and Su Huaiwang quickly changed her mind. “I can eat a little more. Give me some!”
The look of disappointment vanished instantly, and a smile once again crept onto Lin Jue’s face.
Su Huaiwang looked at her face, then at the meat that once again increased in her bowl, feeling a little helpless, but she still smiled.
Nothing else to do but eat. As for Tu Zhizhuo, ignore her for now.
…
It was night.
The moon hung low, and the stars were fast asleep.
The barefoot girl pushed open the door and stepped into the stagnant darkness.
The interior of the house, usually familiar, now held no sign of life.
Only grey-white embers fluttered and dissolved.
Her footsteps stopped before the vortex of the dream.
The wraith lowered her eyes to gaze at the gentle dreamscape.
Today, she once again had the idea of locking Su Huaiwang away in a small world.
She pressed her hand against her chest cavity, which had long ceased to beat. A dull ache radiated there.
Why? Even though this was the best solution, the thought of the human being locked away in a dream by her, like a bird with a broken wing, made her feel an involuntary sense of pain and fear.
What was she afraid of?
She could erase Su Huaiwang’s memory, alter Su Huaiwang’s perception, and make her live only for her.
But why was she so afraid?
She didn’t understand, just as she didn’t understand why she had let Su Huaiwang go back then.
Was this what the Taoist priest had called “love”?
So love causes pain? Love restricts you? Love prevents you from making the right choices?
The wraith still had much she didn’t understand.
But she knew one thing for sure: she wanted Su Huaiwang to be happy.
And if Tu Zhizhuo died, Su Huaiwang would definitely not be happy.
So she couldn’t kill Tu Zhizhuo, even though Tu Zhizhuo might have taken over her job of relieving Su Huaiwang’s sexual needs, and even though the jealousy and pain in her heart were about to overflow.
But… while she couldn’t kill her, she could still do other things.
Lin Jue took a long, deep look at the vortex before her. Su Huaiwang’s pure white dream was flowing peacefully and serenely.
The next second, the girl’s figure had vanished.
A hand broke through the entrance of the dream, and Lin Jue entered Tu Zhizhuo’s dream without effort.
Unexpectedly, Tu Zhizhuo seemed to have a good impression of her, as the dream wasn’t guarded against her.
But Lin Jue didn’t care about that.
She flicked her fingers and began weaving a nightmare, something she was most proficient at.
The scenery around the dream shifted, and Tu Zhizhuo began to dream.
Lin Jue frowned, reaching out to tear apart the messy dreams first.
Then she saw a smaller version of Su Huaiwang sitting obediently in her seat.
The wraith silently withdrew her hand.
The little pink-and-jade dumpling was earnestly playing the piano note by note, her features already showing the shadow of her adult self.
A key hung around her neck, making her look like a little adult.
Lin Jue was silent.
How did she forget? Tu Zhizhuo’s memory contained Su Huaiwang’s childhood appearance.
She felt even more annoyed.
Her emotions were complicated now. On one side was the adorable, small version of Su Huaiwang, so cute that she couldn’t look away, and on the other was the resentment towards Tu Zhizhuo, which was no longer just jealousy but was quickly escalating to hate.
The thought that Tu Zhizhuo had been a part of an unknown number of Su Huaiwang’s life stages made the wraith, who felt like she had been an intruder, feel like she was about to faint from anger.
Dreams defied logic. In the blink of an eye, the piano lesson was over.
Su Huaiwang properly said goodbye to the teacher, but the excitement of a child was uncontrollably showing through her eyes.
Well, who doesn’t like class being over? Su Huaiwang still looked forward to this moment back then.
Lin Jue watched, her heart softening.
However, this pleasant feeling was quickly ruined because another child jumped out.
“Wangwang! Let’s go home together!!”
The child’s voice was loud, making Lin Jue want to slap her to death.
But she couldn’t. She was the main character of the dream, and if she died, the dream would end. Lin Jue could only temporarily suppress the anger in her heart.
On the other side, the little Su Huaiwang hesitated, asking:
“Aren’t you being picked up?”
The young Tu Zhizhuo, like a little princess, put on a fearless front:
“Who cares about them! I’m going with you!”
The nanny carrying her schoolbag behind her had a long, suffering face, clearly having been teased by her often.
Since Tu Zhizhuo insisted, the childish Su Huaiwang naturally couldn’t resist and immediately smiled brightly:
“That’s great! Let’s go home together!”
With that, she reached out her hand, and the two short little hands were clasped together.
Lin Jue silently reached out her own hand as well.
But she had no physical form; her hand passed right through the child’s body.
Lin Jue was annoyed, but it was too late to weave an identity for herself in this dream.
She could only watch the two children happily holding hands and walking home, following gloomily behind them.
Just a little longer. After I watch Su Huaiwang for a bit more, I’ll clear away these dreams and fill them with the nightmares I’ve created.
The wraith thought to herself.
