She Comes Into My Dreams Every Night - Chapter 11
Chapter 11: Need to Answer the Phone
Lin Jue didn’t know why, but on the way home…
Lin Jue didn’t know why, but Su Huaiwang’s complexion on the way home was particularly ashen, and her eyes stared blankly ahead as if dead.
She reviewed her behavior in her mind and didn’t feel like she had done anything inappropriate.
Su Huaiwang’s unnatural state began when she received the express package Lin Jue handed to her. Lin Jue turned her head, her gaze landing on the express package Su Huaiwang had tucked into the furthest corner.
It was an ordinary square express box, and nothing was written on the paper. Lin Jue focused her attention, her gaze piercing through the outer packaging of the box to the contents inside.
Hmm?
“Do you have anything on at noon?”
Su Huaiwang’s voice suddenly came from beside her ear.
Lin Jue calmly retracted her gaze and turned to look at Su Huaiwang again:
“No, why?”
“I’ll treat you to lunch, cold noodles, how about it?”
Su Huaiwang was driving with a lifeless expression. She wanted to compensate Lin Jue, to apologize to her hand in this way.
“Okay.” A dimple swirled by Lin Jue’s lips, and she happily tossed the incomprehensible object in the express box to the back of her mind.
Su Huaiwang exhaled a long breath, still unaware that the secret she had painstakingly hidden had already been discovered by Lin Jue.
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?” she heard Lin Jue ask with concern.
Su Huaiwang was speechless. She couldn’t very well say it was because of mental exhaustion; it would be terrible if Lin Jue thought she was blaming her.
So she could only say, “Nothing, maybe a little low blood sugar.”
You know, the low blood sugar excuse was quite useful.
With a “rip” sound, Su Huaiwang heard Lin Jue tear open a piece of candy, then bring the candy to her lips.
“Have a piece of candy?”
The hard candy block rested against Su Huaiwang’s lip, and a faint minty scent wafted up to her nose, though she wasn’t sure if it mainly came from the small candy granule or from the girl’s fingertip.
Su Huaiwang hastily swallowed the candy, her lips inevitably brushing Lin Jue’s finger, causing a surge of inner restlessness.
But Lin Jue, on the other hand, showed no reaction, didn’t feel anything was amiss, just smiled contentedly, then withdrew her hand.
Su Huaiwang sighed inwardly.
What kind of situation was this? Why was she getting all flustered here by herself? When on earth would this damn biological estrus period finally pass?
…
The electric tricycle stopped steadily in front of the villa. Lin Jue took her own belongings from the car and said:
“I’ll take my things back first, and I’ll be over in a bit.”
Su Huaiwang nodded: “Then I won’t close the door, just come straight in.”
“If you have too many things to carry back, you can leave them in the car for now, and I’ll help you bring them in when I come over later.”
Su Huaiwang agreed readily, but after Lin Jue turned and left, she still quietly made two trips by herself to move everything inside.
When Lin Jue came over and saw the empty car and the full living room, she knew Su Huaiwang had moved everything in two trips by herself, and was therefore slightly displeased:
“Didn’t we agree that I would help you move the rest?”
Su Huaiwang was busy in the kitchen. Hearing Lin Jue’s complaining voice, she found it a little amusing: “Next time, I’ll let you help, okay?”
Lin Jue followed the sound into the kitchen, her eyes seriously watching her: “Okay.”
Her clothes were neat, and she was wearing an apron. Her hair was tied up, there was no sweat on her head, and the ingredients were almost prepped. There was nowhere she could help, and Lin Jue felt a little disappointed.
“Go wait outside. It will be ready soon.” Cold noodles are easy to make and appetizing, making them a must-have dish for a single person in the summer, so Su Huaiwang was very skilled at making them.
“Mm.” Su Huaiwang didn’t look at her. Lin Jue walked out of the kitchen with a poker face. Passing the little yellow dog by the door, she squatted down and stroked its fur twice along its back.
Touched by the cool hand, the little yellow dog happily raised its head. The next second, Lin Jue’s other hand pressed down on its head.
Black energy surged in her palm. If she wished, with a single thought, the dog’s self-awareness would be wiped out, and she would live with Su Huaiwang in its place. Absolutely no one would discover it.
If she wanted to, she could replace every object in this house, including the pet, and Su Huaiwang’s “friend” who hadn’t even shown up yet.
She could make Su Huaiwang’s world revolve only around her, just like a year ago.
The black energy dissipated, and she patted the little yellow dog’s head in dissatisfaction. The little yellow dog, unaware of the crisis it had just experienced, was still sticking out its tongue and grinning foolishly at her.
“Silly dog.”
Lin Jue cradled its head, a hint of jealousy and a little affection in her eyes: “Truly living in clover and not knowing it.”
She originally hated dogs. The few memory fragments she possessed were filled with moments of being chased by vicious dogs. But the dog Su Huaiwang owned… was truly too different from the dogs in her memory, even the one touted as a guard dog…
Lin Jue raised her eyes and looked at the large gray dog lying on its back not far away, wondering if its genes were 99% dog and only 1% wolf.
A lively piano melody rang out, and Lin Jue suddenly stood up, instinctively alert to her surroundings.
Su Huaiwang’s voice came from the kitchen, sounding flustered: “Lin Jue! Can you please answer the phone for me! My hands are busy right now!”
She was halfway through making the cold noodles.
“Oh, okay.”
Lin Jue followed the phone’s ringing sound into Su Huaiwang’s room.
Although she had entered Su Huaiwang’s room once before when she brought the sleeping Su Huaiwang home, this time was different. This time, she came in with Su Huaiwang’s permission, which was incredibly important for creatures like them.
Therefore, as Lin Jue walked into Su Huaiwang’s room, her entire being radiated joy.
She picked up the phone from the bedside table, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw that strange express box again.
The box was placed in the shadow beside the bedside table, with a strange attitude, both cherished and despised.
The ringing was urgent, so Lin Jue didn’t indulge her curiosity to investigate but pressed the answer button directly.
“Hello, you’ve reached her.” The girl’s voice was cool and clear, like ice, crossing a thousand miles through the receiver and instantly freezing Tu Zhuzhu on the other end of the line.
Tu Zhuzhu was stunned, unable to convince herself that Su Huaiwang had completely changed her voice in the few months they hadn’t spoken.
She didn’t reply, so there was no sound from the other end of the line, patiently waiting for her.
Tu Zhuzhu looked at the glaring three characters “Su Huaiwang” on her phone and tentatively spoke:
“I’m Su Huaiwang’s friend, and you are…”
“I’m… her neighbor. She’s in the kitchen right now. Do you need me to call her for you?”
Tu Zhuzhu felt as if the voice on the other end had become even colder, though she wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination.
Wait, neighbor? In Su Huaiwang’s house? And Su Huaiwang is making food for her? Isn’t that a privilege only she used to enjoy? Has this newcomer risen so quickly in the ranks?
Tu Zhuzhu’s mind was a mess.
On the other side, Lin Jue didn’t receive a reply, so she had to take the phone to find Su Huaiwang.
“Your friend.”
Reaching the kitchen doorway, Lin Jue shook the phone in her hand.
Su Huaiwang turned around and smiled apologetically: “Sorry, I’m not finished yet.”
Lin Jue stepped forward: “Then I’ll hold the phone for you…”
The natural offer of help was interrupted by Tu Zhuzhu in the receiver. The phone’s microphone was too sensitive; she had heard the entire exchange and now couldn’t help but exclaim loudly: “Oh, actually, it’s nothing important! I can talk to this neighbor lady! Xiaowang, you go back to what you’re doing!”
Su Huaiwang’s hand paused, and an embarrassed expression appeared on her face.
Facing Lin Jue’s puzzled look, she licked her lips and had to laboriously explain for Tu Zhuzhu:
“She… she’s not a bad person, just a bit too friendly… sorry…”
“It’s nothing,” Lin Jue smiled: “Your friend, I’d like to get to know her too.”
Lin Jue emphasized the word “friend,” and for some reason, Su Huaiwang felt like there was a hidden meaning in her words.
But after thinking for a while and not figuring it out, she simply gave up trying, saying:
“Then I’ll trouble you.”
“No trouble at all.”
Lin Jue was still smiling beautifully, but as soon as she was out of the kitchen door and Su Huaiwang couldn’t see her, the smile instantly melted away without a trace.
“Hello, may I ask what the matter is?” She was expressionless but carefully brought Su Huaiwang’s frequently used phone close to her ear.
“Nothing, just… Xiaowang mentioned you to me.” Tu Zhuzhu carefully chose her words.
Lin Jue was different from what she had imagined. She had imagined Lin Jue to be a fiery vixen, someone who could quickly break through Su Huaiwang’s boundaries. But after this call, even a deaf person could tell what type the person on the other end was.
Hah, a frosty goddess. Su Huaiwang actually encountered this rare kind of romantic interest.
Tu Zhuzhu rubbed her ears. For a moment, she had the illusion that her ears had been frozen off.
“Is that so?” Tu Zhuzhu heard a subtle chuckle from the other end, like ice and snow melting and spring returning.
She was suddenly uncertain about her assessment again.
Perhaps she’s just shy? But how did two shy people become close so quickly? No, if Lin Jue was really the frosty goddess type, could it be that Su Huaiwang was the one who initiated things?! That’s even more impossible, isn’t it?!
A jumble of thoughts mixed in Tu Zhuzhu’s brain, making her momentarily forget what she wanted to say.
Until Lin Jue asked her again:
“So, what is it that you need?”
Even after being put on hold like that, the girl’s voice was still steady, showing no sign of displeasure. Tu Zhuzhu’s impression of Su Huaiwang’s unfamiliar new neighbor improved significantly all at once.
She quickly said:
“Uh, I wanted to tell Xiaowang that I’ll be back around the 3rd. I’ll send her the specific flight time later.”
“Understood, I will relay the message.”
“Also, I’ll be staying at her house for about a week,” Tu Zhuzhu paused and smiled: “I’m really looking forward to meeting you. Xiaowang has told me quite a bit about you.”
Actually, she hadn’t, but Tu Zhuzhu felt she needed to play the wingman.
Su Huaiwang living alone was too lonely. Tu Zhuzhu occasionally worried about her mental health. After all, humans are social animals.
Now that there was a Lin Jue who offered to keep her company, Tu Zhuzhu wasn’t going to let the opportunity go to waste.
“Is that so?” The other side was silent for a moment before replying.
“Yes,” Tu Zhuzhu was overjoyed, thinking she had successfully played the wingman.
“Mm, I will relay that to her,” Lin Jue lowered her eyes, and threads of black energy emerged from her fingertips:
“I am also, very much looking forward to it.”
The call ended. Behind her, there was the sound of a plate colliding with a table. Su Huaiwang was already bringing the food to the table.
“Sorry, she’s always like that. What did she say to you?”
Lin Jue turned around, the black energy completely swallowed by her, and the smile Su Huaiwang was familiar with reappeared on her face.
“Nothing much. Just that she’s coming back on the 3rd, will send you the flight details, and will be staying at your place for a week.”
“Oh, that was it…” Looking at Lin Jue’s amber eyes, Su Huaiwang felt a little guilty for some reason. She put down the plate and touched her face: “She could have just sent a message about something like that. Did she really have to call… Never mind that, let’s eat.”
“Mm.”
Lin Jue walked towards her with a normal expression, handing her the phone.
That “friend” was coming back, and another living being would be added to their dynamic. This feeling, all in all, was unpleasant.
Crack.
The ice cubes in the bowl of cold noodles inexplicably cracked.
