Senior, Stop Pretending to be an Alpha - Chapter 6
As soon as Yu Qiao returned to her dormitory, she received a message in the class group chat.
The counselor had assigned a few class committee members to head to the office to pick up the camouflage uniforms for military training. As luck would have it, she was one of the members selected for the task.
Because of her excellent grades, the counselor had asked her at the start of the semester if she was interested in being a student leader. Despite her repeated attempts to decline, she ultimately ended up with the role of Psychological Representative. Although it sounded important, her daily duties were minimal, mostly just providing manual labor during class events or helping with activity planning.
As the Academic Representative, Lu Yun had to go with her.
The two exchanged a look, left the soundly sleeping Yao Rudong behind, quietly closed the dormitory door, and headed out.
The afternoon sun was scorching. They walked side by side beneath the quiet shade of the trees, listening to the noisy play coming from the basketball courts. Stepping over the scattered patches of sunlight, they made their way toward the administration building.
Lu Yun wasn’t as lively as Yao Rudong. She was tall and slender with clean-cut features and a sharp, ear-length short haircut. At first glance, she seemed like a cold beauty, but once you got to know her, you realized she was just “cold on the outside, warm on the inside.”
“Why didn’t you eat lunch with us today?” Lu Yun nudged Yu Qiao’s shoulder, raising an eyebrow. “Had something to do?”
Yu Qiao had no intention of hiding it and spoke truthfully. “I had an appointment with someone.”
Lu Yun’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really? You made a new friend?!”
Yu Qiao’s social circle was incredibly narrow—so narrow it practically only existed within Dorm 301. She wasn’t an extrovert and was always busy with studies or part-time work. Consequently, since the start of the semester, Lu Yun had never seen her associate with anyone other than her roommates.
Yu Qiao froze for a second, feeling a bit amused. Recalling her lunch with Xie Bufei earlier, she nodded. “Mhm, I suppose so.”
Yu Qiao wasn’t entirely sure how to define her relationship with Xie Bufei. While she enjoyed the comfort of their interactions, labeling them “friends” felt a bit premature. After all, they had only known each other for two or three days; they didn’t really know each other yet. The only certainty was that Xie Bufei harbored no ill will toward her.
To Yu Qiao, rather than a common social connection, Xie Bufei felt more like a pleasant surprise woven from a series of coincidences. She couldn’t find the specific words to define her; every time she appeared, it was sudden and unexpected.
Lu Yun looked at her with a look of immense pride, like a mother bird watching her fledgling finally take to the sky. “Who is it? An Alpha or an Omega? Someone from class? Qiaoqiao, you have to be careful—don’t get tricked.”
Yu Qiao: “Don’t worry, she’s not that kind of person.”
Determined to protect her innocent roommate, Lu Yun knit her brows and spoke earnestly. “That’s not necessarily true. There are so many scumbags out there who act one way to your face and another behind your back. You can know a person’s face but not their heart.”
“Just look at that well-dressed jerk Xu Jie; he’s the perfect example. With your kind and simple personality, someone could eat you alive and you wouldn’t even realize it!”
Yu Qiao chuckled. Thinking about her bank balance, which barely hit four digits, she shook her head. “I have nothing right now. There’s nothing to trick me out of.”
“You’re too naive.” Lu Yun’s expression turned grave as she lowered her voice. “What if they’re after your… charms?”
Yu Qiao was stunned, left speechless by the thought: Xie Bufei, trying to seduce her? It sounded like a total fairy tale.
Lu Yun continued her gentle persuasion. “Qiaoqiao, if you trust me, just tell me who it is. I’ll vet them for you.”
Yu Qiao sighed. “Alright. Actually, it’s Xie—”
“Xie Bufei!”
Yu Qiao whipped her head around. “How did you know?”
But Lu Yun hadn’t actually heard her. She had stopped in her tracks, her gaze locked onto the basketball court. “She actually came here…” she whispered in shock.
Yu Qiao followed her gaze. On the plastic sports court, a high-stakes basketball game seemed to be in progress, the cheers unending. Amidst the dense, dark crowd, a certain slender figure was exceptionally prominent.
In that moment, Yu Qiao thought: Xie Bufei is truly beautiful. Even her back stands out from the crowd, making it impossible to miss her.
She was wearing the same black halter dress from lunch. The thin black straps were tied in a bow behind her elegant neck, and her fair forearms were strikingly bright against the sunlight. Her dark hair was tied into a small, messy bun that bobbed slightly, tinted a hazy pale gold by the sun.
Many people nearby were stealing glances at her, yet no one dared to approach the legendary campus belle.
Lu Yun suddenly clicked her tongue. “Now I see why she’s here. Cheng Yeli is playing.”
This was the second time Yu Qiao had heard that name. She remembered he was a wealthy young master who was quite popular; the Confession Wall was filled with his admirers.
Lu Yun tilted her chin up knowingly. “She’s probably here to watch Cheng Yeli’s game.”
On the court, the handsome, tall youth leaped high, tucked his elbow, and sank a beautiful three-pointer. The ball traced a perfect arc into the hoop, and the crowd went wild.
As halftime began, Cheng Yeli wiped his sweat, dropped the ball, and headed toward the stands. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, he stopped in front of the cool-faced girl and reached out, a bright, brilliant smile on his lips.
Yu Qiao couldn’t see Xie Bufei’s expression, only her hand reaching out to hand a bottle of water to Cheng Yeli. He tilted his head back to drink, his Adam’s apple bobbing. He pulled up his jersey to wipe his sweat, revealing a lean waist. Xie Bufei was a bit shorter than him, and she seemed to be looking up at him, saying something.
A stunning Alpha and a handsome Omega—the sight of two high-visual people standing together sparked everyone’s imagination. The scene was so perfect that many held their breath in envy.
Lu Yun sighed. “They really do match.”
Yu Qiao pursed her lips and nodded noncommittally, though she couldn’t quite name the feeling in her chest.
However, no one knew that in reality, Xie Bufei was saying to Cheng Yeli: “It’s so hot. I want to go back to the dorm.”
Cheng Yeli hissed through his teeth, “The game isn’t over yet! Do you really have the heart to leave me alone? Where am I supposed to put my face?”
Xie Bufei looked at him as if he were an idiot. “Why would you think I wouldn’t have the heart?”
Cheng Yeli: “I often doubt the reality of our friendship.”
“If it didn’t exist, I wouldn’t have braved this heat and abandoned my air-conditioned room to watch you play basketball.” Xie Bufei crossed her arms. “So, do you feel better now? Has the pain of your breakup been sweat away by the exercise?”
Cheng Yeli’s expression slumped. “Sigh, it’s not that fast…”
Xie Bufei unceremoniously smacked his head. “You’ve broken up and gotten back together with her so many times. If you dare go back again, you’re just asking for it. Don’t blame me for looking down on you then.”
Cheng Yeli clutched his forehead and wailed, “Hey! Are you trying to turn me stupid?”
“You’re already stupid enough.”
Since no one could hear what they were saying, the scene looked quite different to the onlookers. “Wow! They’ve started flirting! So sweet, so sweet!”
Some people felt salty with jealousy, while others pulled out their phones to take secret photos. Lu Yun was also indignant: “How can they publicly torment the single people like this?!”
Yu Qiao, unable to tune into their frequency, pushed up her glasses and said sincerely, “I think she just simply wanted to hit Cheng Yeli…”
Lu Yun spoke with the tone of someone who had seen it all. “That’s where you’re wrong. That’s just how people in love are! They do all these little playful physical things.”
Yu Qiao, having no experience, could only say, “Alright.”
She recalled that during her time with Xie Bufei, the older girl hadn’t mentioned anything about dating Cheng Yeli. If Xie Bufei really was “taken,” would it be better to keep some distance? Even though she hadn’t differentiated yet, being too close might lead to misunderstandings.
Yu Qiao looked at the frustrated Lu Yun and said softly, “Should we go get the uniforms first?”
Lu Yun reluctantly withdrew her gaze. “True, business first.”
They entered the administration building, verified the student numbers with two other class reps, signed the forms, and walked out each carrying a stack of clothes.
Lu Yun finished the count. “Let’s take these back to our own dorms for now and distribute them before class tomorrow. It’s too much of a hassle to coordinate with the people living off-campus right now.”
Yu Qiao agreed, and the two Alphas also nodded. The four split up to return to their dorms.
As they passed the basketball court again, Lu Yun stopped. “Oh, looks like they finished.” The game had just ended, but the crowd hadn’t dispersed yet, and the noise was still loud.
Suddenly, a voice called out from behind: “Lu Yun—”
A girl with long hair ran toward them, out of breath and looking anxious. Lu Yun recognized her; she was Lin Xiaotong from the Literature Club. “Xiaotong? What’s up?”
Lin Xiaotong stopped in front of them, sweating profusely. “I… I’ve been looking for you forever! I tagged you in the group but you didn’t reply. The president needs us to go over right now!”
Lu Yun nodded. “Okay, let me just drop these off at the dorm and I’ll be right there.”
Lin Xiaotong shook her head. “But the president is in a rush, she wants you there immediately…”
Lu Yun froze, looking at the clothes in her arms with a frown. “Does it have to be right now?”
Lin Xiaotong nodded vigorously. “Yes! You better go quickly. The president has a short fuse; it’s terrifying when she gets angry. She’ll be yelling at people if you’re late!”
Seeing Lu Yun’s hesitation, Yu Qiao volunteered. “It’s okay, you go. I’ll help you carry these back.”
Lu Yun looked at her worriedly. “No, you can’t carry them all by yourself, can you?”
“It’s fine, I can manage,” Yu Qiao said. “Go ahead, don’t keep them waiting.”
After several more prompts from Lin Xiaotong, Lu Yun had no choice but to hand the clothes over to Yu Qiao, her face full of guilt. “Qiaoqiao, I’m so sorry! I’ll treat you to ice cream when I get back!”
Yu Qiao nodded. “Go on.”
Lu Yun nodded and quickly followed Lin Xiaotong away.
Yu Qiao weighed the dozen or so sets of clothes in her arms. They weren’t actually that heavy; she was used to doing chores and carrying heavy things for her mother. However, with so many clothes stacked high, her field of vision was partially blocked.
As people milled about the basketball court, Yu Qiao struggled forward alone. Sweat soaked her back, and her glasses kept sliding down her nose.
Xie Bufei was sitting in the stands, chatting idly with Cheng Yeli, when her peripheral vision caught a familiar figure slowly crossing the court toward the exit. She watched for a few seconds, then suddenly shoved her water bottle into Cheng Yeli’s hands and spoke rapidly. “I have to go, something came up.”
Cheng Yeli was both outraged and aggrieved. “What?! You’re leaving me alone again!”
Xie Bufei: “The game is over, isn’t it?”
Cheng Yeli went full drama mode, clutching his heart. “But my emotional wounds haven’t healed yet! Master Xie, do you really have the heart to abandon me?”
Xie Bufei remained calm. “I do. My friend, you must find enlightenment on your own; I can no longer help you.”
With that, she strode off to catch up with Yu Qiao.
