- Chapter 7 - She is my wife
Beneath the suspended vehicle, colorful trail cars zipped along the tracks. Chu Liruo withdrew her gaze and turned to look at Lu Xibie, who sat in the passenger seat. Her body was relaxed against the chair, one hand resting casually on her abdomen, eyes closed. The fleeting lights from the trail cars softly outlined her features.
Soft?
Chu Liruo brushed her ear, the flickering light and shadow making her feel dazed.
The days waiting for the start of Zhigu Military Academy were too peaceful, making her sometimes question whether she had truly been reborn. Were the memories of her past life real?
But whenever such doubts arose, she quickly convinced herself again.
The pain and suffocation etched deep in her memory warned her not to repeat the same mistakes.
“Beep beep—Entering Guangdian United City area. Estimated arrival at Zhigu Military Academy in ten hours.”
Lu Xibie stirred and opened her eyes, glanced at the time, then opened the front storage compartment and took out two sandwiches, closing the cabinet.
“Want one?” she turned and offered one to Chu Liruo.
Chu Liruo, who had been gazing out the window, turned and took the sandwich. “Thanks.”
Lu Xibie turned back, unwrapped her sandwich, and began eating.
The taste was no different from what she remembered in the previous world, but here it was a rare treat.
After the mutation, many seas and lands were polluted, and creatures mutated. Native plants and animals became scarce, mostly confined to federal protected zones. Fresh food became precious; most people relied on nutrient solutions.
From the back came the soft rustling of packaging and chewing. Lu Xibie took a bite and savored it, her eyes gently curving.
She didn’t know why, but ever since Chu Liruo entered the vehicle, the voices in her head had quieted, not gone entirely, but enough for her to finally get a full night’s sleep for the first time in days.
The freshness of honeysuckle and the elegance of balloon flower mingled in the air. Lu Xibie took a deep breath, feeling refreshed, and asked the driver, “Do you smell the scent of plants?”
The driver shook his head. “No, Miss. Betas can’t smell Alpha or Omega pheromones.”
“Oh.” Lu Xibie nodded lightly and closed her eyes again.
She had to make the most of this rare chance to sleep well.
Chu Liruo heard Lu Xibie’s question and felt alarmed. She reached for the back of her neck to confirm her pheromone patch was still in place before continuing to eat.
She wasn’t in her sensitive period, hadn’t released pheromones deliberately, and had two layers of protection. There was no way her scent could have leaked.
Chu Liruo nervously watched Lu Xibie’s profile, but she simply tossed the wrapper into the auto-recycler and closed her eyes again—sleeping all the way to Zhigu Military Academy.
“You have arrived at Zhigu Military Academy. This trip has ended.”
“Miss, this is as far as I can take you.” The driver pressed a button, and the vehicle doors opened.
Lu Xibie rubbed her eyes, adjusting to the bright light. After sleeping for over ten hours, she felt surprisingly refreshed.
She stepped out, her brown military boots hitting the ground. Stretching lazily, she turned to Chu Liruo. As Chu Liruo approached, that fresh, pleasant plant scent returned.
“Are you first-year students reporting today?” asked an Alpha in gray military uniform and glasses, checking his wrist terminal.
Zhigu Military Academy had a three-year system: first, second, and third years. Outstanding graduates were assigned to major army groups.
Lu Xibie replied, “Yes.”
“I’m Lu Fangjue from the second-year Biological Exploration and Research Department. I’ll be your guide. What are your names?” His gaze lingered on Chu Liruo.
“Lu Xibie.”
“Chu Liruo.”
“Alright, follow me. I’ll take you to the Alpha dormitory first.” Lu Fangjue checked his terminal.
“Take us to the Omega dormitory first,” Lu Xibie said.
“Student…” Lu Fangjue looked at Chu Liruo, but was interrupted again.
“To the Omega dormitory,” Lu Xibie repeated calmly but firmly.
Lu Fangjue adjusted his glasses and asked, “What’s your relationship?”
Lu Xibie replied, “She is my wife.”
Lu Fangjue scratched his nose awkwardly. “Married already, huh.”
He turned and walked toward the academy. “Then… Omega dormitory first.”
Chu Liruo walked beside Lu Xibie, still hearing the echo of “She is my wife.” Had things truly changed after her rebirth?
In her past life, she hadn’t made it to Zhigu Military Academy. If it had been the old Lu Xibie, she wouldn’t even have seen her at school, let alone attend together.
And Dan Ruijing was also at Zhigu… She just admitted it so easily?
Chu Liruo glanced at Lu Xibie, finding her harder and harder to understand.
In her memory, Lu Xibie was fierce, violent, combative, and irritable—not this casual, calm person.
Noticing Chu Liruo’s gaze, Lu Xibie turned and asked gently, “What’s wrong?”
Chu Liruo looked away and shook her head.
“Nervous about starting school?” Lu Xibie asked.
Chu Liruo shook her head again.
Lu Fangjue led them to the Omega dormitory. “This is the Omega dorm.”
After learning of their relationship, he lost interest in guiding further. “So, Lu…”
“Lu Xibie.”
“Bring your terminal closer. I’ll send you the freshman guide. The Alpha dorm isn’t far.”
Lu Xibie lazily leaned her terminal toward him.
“File sent.”
“Alright, guide delivered. I’ve got other freshmen to guide.” Lu Fangjue turned and left.
“He’s not taking you?” Chu Liruo asked.
“No worries, I can find it. That’s the first-year Omega dorm. You go in.” Lu Xibie tapped her terminal, opening the freshman guide. A holographic map appeared above her wrist, far more detailed than the school’s intro. She quickly found her way.
Chu Liruo wanted to say something but didn’t know what.
In her past life, she hadn’t reported in. Her dying wish was to leave the Lu residence and enroll.
Now, everything was smooth, yet her heart felt strangely empty.
Lu Xibie closed the map and looked at Chu Liruo. “Are you scared?”
Her clear eyes were full of concern. Chu Liruo nodded instinctively. “Mm.”
Lu Xibie looked into her gentle eyes, remembering her tragic story from the book, and felt even more protective. “Come on, I’ll walk you in. The school guide says Alphas with family ties can enter Omega dorms within the first three days after registration.”
“Okay, thank you.” Chu Liruo tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
Zhigu’s rules stated freshmen couldn’t bring luggage. The two entered light-handed. After registering at the entrance, they were allowed in.
Chu Liruo swiped her electronic card. The door slowly opened. Perhaps because they arrived early, the dorm was empty.
“That’s your bed,” Lu Xibie said, pointing at the label.
“Mm.”
“I’ll head back then?”
“Okay.”
Lu Xibie took a step, then turned. “Would you like to add me as a contact? I’ll send you the freshman handbook… I don’t know how to transfer files.”
Chu Liruo got up. After all this time at the Lu residence, she didn’t even have Lu Xibie’s contact. Newlyweds without contact info—no one would believe it.
“I’d like that.” She tapped her terminal and moved closer.
“Chu Liruo has requested to add you as a friend.”
Lu Xibie accepted immediately.
“You are now friends with Lu Xibie.”
“File received.”
Chu Liruo looked at the notification.
“I’ll go now. If you need anything, feel free to reach out,” Lu Xibie said. The room was warm, and seeing Chu Liruo’s slightly flushed face, she thought this might be the last time she saw her.
She said Chu Liruo could contact her, but Lu Xibie felt that given her past reputation, Chu Liruo probably wouldn’t.
Now Chu Liruo could pursue her dream at Zhigu and serve the Federation.
As for Lu Xibie, she needed to enter the arena and end everything. Alphas and Omegas usually had separate classes. No matter how long it took to finish things, they wouldn’t see each other again for a while.
“Okay.” Chu Liruo studied Lu Xibie’s eyes, noticing a shade of melancholy she’d never seen before—so calm, like someone walking a tightrope in the dark.
“Mm.” Lu Xibie nodded and closed the door. As it shut, the previously quiet voices in her head returned in full force.
Fight! Fight!
Destroy! Destroy!
De-stroy-it-all!
Pain throbbed in her forehead and temples. Lu Xibie knocked her head.
“Golden House at your service.”
“I didn’t call you!” she snapped. She had gotten used to the quieter voices around Chu Liruo, but now they were loud again.
“Understood.”
“Wait.”
“When will Plot Point 2 be completed? I’m already at Zhigu.”
