- Chapter 16 - Asleep?
The crowd around them grew, and the weight on Lu Xibie’s arm made her afraid to move.
She wasn’t sure why, but the system notification for completing plot point four was still nowhere to be seen.
She had indeed given the Physical Enhancement Serum to Dan Ruijing, and based on her past experience with completing plot points, the plot deviation would be high at most.
“Golden House,” Lu Xibie called out softly.
The moment she spoke, everything around her, even the leaves floating in the air, came to a standstill.
But as the last syllable faded, they continued to drift.
“Golden House,” she called out again.
The same thing happened; the Golden House didn’t appear.
Lu Xibie stopped trying. She had more or less gotten used to the glances from the people coming and going nearby. The even, warm stream of energy on her arm kept her rooted to the spot. She didn’t know if Chu Liruo was asleep, but she didn’t want to ask.
The fresh scent of honeysuckle and platycodon made her gradually forget the crowd. Looking up at the blue sky, she felt as comfortable as if she were floating in the clouds.
“Buzz, buzz, buzz—”
After a long while, Chu Liruo’s comm-link vibrated. She reached out, grabbed a piece of Lu Xibie’s clothing, and looked up. The sunlight wasn’t too harsh, but she was still shielded by a shadow.
Lu Xibie held her hand loosely in front of Chu Liruo’s forehead, looking at her sleepy eyes. “Asleep?”
Chu Liruo closed her eyes and leaned into Lu Xibie’s hand. “Mhm.”
She had been having nightmares all last night, and she actually fell asleep resting on Lu Xibie today?
She herself was surprised to realize this.
Lu Xibie quickly settled her hand, letting Chu Liruo rest her head on it.
“You must be tired, right?” Chu Liruo opened her eyes, took Lu Xibie’s hand, and gently massaged it with both of hers to help her relax.
“No, no,” Lu Xibie shook her head. After a few squeezes from Chu Liruo, she pulled her hand back. “We got a message about our application.”
When Chu Liruo’s comm-link vibrated, Lu Xibie had caught a glimpse of the new message on hers.
Seeing Lu Xibie pull her hand away, Chu Liruo didn’t press the issue and opened her comm-link. “That fast?”
“Yeah,” Lu Xibie opened her comm-link. “It’s been approved.”
Chu Liruo looked at the [Approved] message on the screen and turned her head to ask Lu Xibie, “So we can live together now?”
Lu Xibie nodded. “Mhm, the message says we can move today. First, we’ll go to your dorm to check in and move your things, then I’ll go to my dorm.”
“Today…” Chu Liruo was a little slow from just waking up. It hadn’t been long since Lu Xibie mentioned living together, and now they were about to.
“Do you feel like today is too soon? How about we do it tomorrow?” Lu Xibie was afraid she seemed too eager.
“Tomorrow… no, no, no.” Chu Liruo shook her head, now a little more alert. “Today is fine. The school doesn’t let us bring much luggage, so there’s not a lot to pack.”
“Okay, let’s go then.” With Chu Liruo’s confirmation, Lu Xibie walked with her toward the Omega dormitories.
“Beep—”
When they swiped open the dorm door, Dan Ruijing was sitting on her bed watching them. “Xibie, are you seeing Liruo back?”
Lu Xibie simply answered with an “mhm.”
“Is there anything else?” Lu Xibie asked Chu Liruo softly, reaching out to take the items Chu Liruo was handing her.
Dan Ruijing stood up and watched the two of them busy themselves. It looked like they were moving out?
Dan Ruijing’s hands, which were resting on her stomach, clenched slightly. From the moment Lu Xibie entered the room, she hadn’t looked at her once, her eyes solely on Chu Liruo. This would have been impossible before.
This was her dorm, yet she felt like she didn’t belong here.
The strange feeling made Dan Ruijing frown, but she quickly smoothed her brows and a smile appeared on her lips. “Lu Xibie.”
“Mhm.” Lu Xibie gave a casual “mhm,” her eyes following Chu Liruo.
Chu Liruo handed the items in her hands to Lu Xibie. “This is the last one.”
“Okay.” Lu Xibie nodded and carefully took the items from Chu Liruo. “When you’re done, we can leave.”
“Okay.” Chu Liruo looked around, confirmed she hadn’t forgotten anything, and said to Lu Xibie, “Let’s go.”
This feeling of being ignored by Lu Xibie was something Dan Ruijing had never experienced before. Usually, as soon as she appeared, Lu Xibie, just like Shang Lean, would surround her without even needing to be called. But it wasn’t like that now.
Ever since Chu Liruo married into the Lu family, Lu Xibie had disappeared from her side.
The dorm door was opened again, and just as the two were about to leave, Dan Ruijing raised her voice and called out again, “Lu Xibie.”
“Mhm.” Lu Xibie glanced at Dan Ruijing, then turned to Chu Liruo and asked, “Do you have your electronic key card?”
“It’s in my hand.” Chu Liruo waved the electronic card at Lu Xibie.
The repeated acts of being ignored ignited a fire in Dan Ruijing’s heart. She spoke again, “Where are you two going?”
“We’re moving dorms,” Lu Xibie answered without looking up. “We’re going to live together.”
Hearing Lu Xibie’s straightforward answer, a flash of malice crossed Dan Ruijing’s eyes. She remembered Lu Xibie saying not long ago, ‘…now that I’m married, I just want to have a good life with Liruo.’ She also remembered Lu Xibie’s vigilant expression when she invited Chu Liruo to the holographic training room. Is she really so protective of her new wife?
Didn’t she make a huge fuss about getting married not long ago?
An Alpha’s so-called affection is nothing more than this.
“Why is Liruo moving out?” Dan Ruijing looked reluctant as she took a few steps forward to the door, reaching out and grabbing Chu Liruo’s hand. “Liruo and I get along so well. Did she force you to move?”
Dan Ruijing reached out to lightly tap Lu Xibie’s shoulder but hit air. Her expression stiffened slightly before relaxing. She looked at Chu Liruo. “Liruo, if she bullies you, you tell me and I’ll stand up for you. She’s the one who listens to me the most, you know.”
Hearing Dan Ruijing’s words, Chu Liruo turned her head, looked at Lu Xibie, and said with a smile to Dan Ruijing, “She didn’t force me. We decided this together.”
Dan Ruijing had expected Chu Liruo to feel a little jealous hearing her say this, but she was smiling and looked completely unaffected.
“That’s right, we decided it together,” Lu Xibie added from the side.
Dan Ruijing pursed her lips, watching the two of them standing close together.
“Ms. Dan, is there anything else?” Lu Xibie asked.
Dan Ruijing stared at Lu Xibie without speaking. In the past, when she looked at Lu Xibie like this, Lu Xibie would either hurry to see if she had something to give her or would shower her with a string of flattering words.
But now…
After waiting for a moment, Lu Xibie took Chu Liruo’s arm and said to Dan Ruijing, “Ms. Dan, we’ll be going now.”
Dan Ruijing watched the two of them walk away, hand in hand, and felt a rush of irritation.
She had never cared about Lu Xibie before; she was just an Alpha who would come when called and go when told. But she hadn’t told her to go yet.
“Lu Xibie left with Chu Liruo, carrying a lot of stuff.”
“Is Lu Xibie helping Chu Liruo move dorms?”
“Seems like it.”
“So the analysis on the 177th floor of the forum post [Little Tyrant Lu Xibie and Her Wife’s Affectionate Chronicle] was true? Lu Xibie doesn’t like Ms. Dan anymore and she likes her new wife, Chu—”
“Chu Liruo.”
“Yes, that’s her!”
“Why is Ms. Dan standing there?”
“Ms. Dan and Chu Liruo are roommates, right next door to us. You didn’t know?”
“It’s true that it’s not appropriate for the person you used to like to live in the same dorm as your wife. No wonder Lu Xibie came to get Chu Liruo.”
“Why is Ms. Dan still standing there?”
“When someone who’s always trailing after you suddenly runs off with someone else, anyone would be a little disoriented.”
“Ms. Dan wouldn’t be like that.”
“You’re right. Ms. Dan has no shortage of people who like her.”
…
Heteromorphs have much more sensitive hearing than most people. Dan Ruijing heard most of the gossip in the hallway. A moment later, she turned around and went back into her dorm, closing the door.
“Registration successful.”
Lu Xibie and Chu Liruo’s new dorm was in building Z-7, where most of the residents were people with family relations.
“This is it.” Lu Xibie looked at the door plate and motioned for Chu Liruo to swipe her electronic key card. Since she hadn’t gone back to register at her Alpha dorm yet, her key card couldn’t open the door.
“Beep—”
The new dorm was nearly twice the size of their old one. It had two rooms, an inner and an outer one, both with their own bathrooms and training rooms. Because the residents were mostly family, the rooms weren’t separated by a line in the center.
“Which one do you want?” Lu Xibie asked. She had looked around both rooms and felt the inner one was more suitable for Chu Liruo. “The inner one is bigger, you can take that one.”
Chu Liruo went inside to look at the room. After seeing the separate door lock, she accepted Lu Xibie’s suggestion. “Okay, I’ll take the inner one.”
Lu Xibie picked up the items they had brought from the old dorm and went into the inner room. “Where do these go?”
“Put this there,” Chu Liruo naturally instructed. “And can you put that over there?”
“And this one, can you help me lay it out here?”
“Mhm.”
…
It was only after all the items had been placed in their proper spots that Chu Liruo belatedly realized she had been bossing Lu Xibie around for a while.
“All done. Is there anything else you need me to do?” Lu Xibie clapped her hands and asked.
Chu Liruo looked at Lu Xibie’s clear, spring-like eyes and found it harder than ever to connect her to the ‘Lu Xibie’ of her past life.
“No… no, that’s it. Thank you for your hard work today,” Chu Liruo said to Lu Xibie.
“It’s no trouble.” Lu Xibie turned to look at the table in the outer room and said to Chu Liruo, “I’m going back to my old dorm for a bit.”
Chu Liruo: “I’ll go with you.”
Lu Xibie shook her head to refuse. “No need, I can handle it myself. You should rest. Oh, and it’s almost time to eat. Do you want me to bring you back some food?”
“Then… that would be a great help.”
“Thump—”
The sound of the door closing rang out. The sky was getting darker. Chu Liruo watched the door for a while before turning and walking into her room.
She had planned to set the door lock immediately, but the moment she saw the bed, she collapsed onto it.
As soon as she closed the door, the voices in her head started to get active, becoming louder the farther she got from the dorm.
Quiet—quiet.
Fight—fight!
Why do the voices in her head quiet down when she’s with Chu Liruo?
Lu Xibie pondered this question amidst the noise. In the beginning, being with Chu Liruo didn’t have such a noticeable effect.
“Registration successful, please enter.”
“Plot Point Four, completed. Reward: 100 Evolution Points.”
Just as she entered the Alpha dorms, the system notified her that plot point four was complete.
Lu Xibie quickly walked into the levitating elevator.
“You’re back?” Zhu Xiaotao reached out and handed Lu Xibie a bag of beef jerky. “Want some?”
She must have eaten something earlier, her mouth was covered in bits of chili flakes.
Lu Xibie took the beef jerky, tore off a few tissues, and handed them to Zhu Xiaotao. “Wipe your mouth.”
“Oh.” Zhu Xiaotao gave a muffled response, took the tissues, and wiped her mouth carelessly.
“Golden House.” Time froze once again.
A light blue screen appeared before Lu Xibie’s eyes.
[Plot Point Four: Plot Deviation 91%, Plot Authenticity 51%, Judged as complete.]
Lu Xibie glanced at the plot deviation, which had reached a new high, and immediately clicked [Redeem].
[Would you like to redeem a Cleansing Potion?]
[Yes]
[Quantity]
[1]
[Confirm Redemption]
Lu Xibie held the potion bottle and didn’t rush to drink it. She looked at Zhu Xiaotao, who was frozen at the table, and used a tissue to wipe her mouth clean before walking back to her bed and sitting down. She then drank the Cleansing Potion in one gulp.
Zhu Xiaotao felt her mouth go clean. She licked it but didn’t taste any chili. Her eyes were drawn to the potion bottle in Lu Xibie’s hand. “Why are you drinking medicine again?”
“I’ve told you before,” Lu Xibie lightly tapped her temple.
“Oh, you’re sick,” Zhu Xiaotao chewed her food, remembering the school forum posts. “Right, what are you and your wife really like? They all say you’re just putting on a show to get Dan Ruijing’s attention.”
She was just repeating what others said in the forums.
Lu Xibie frowned slightly. She had heard a lot of similar gossip today. “Stay away from Dan Ruijing.”
Zhu Xiaotao nonchalantly waved the beef jerky in her hand. “I know—”
“You told me before that you like her, and I said I just think she smells nice.”
“Wow—you wouldn’t believe it, she smelled so good today when I was next to her. I’ve never smelled anyone so good.”
“That’s not what I mean. She’s going to…” Kill you.
The words were still in Lu Xibie’s throat when the space around her mouth became thick and sticky. She remembered the pain from not long ago and closed her mouth.
“Anyway, just stay away from her. I don’t like Dan Ruijing, and I’m not trying to get her attention. Chu Liruo and I are doing great, it’s not a show. Don’t listen to their nonsense,” Lu Xibie tried her best to warn Zhu Xiaotao.
“Okay, you’re the one in the situation, I’ll listen to you.” Zhu Xiaotao bit off a piece and nodded slightly. She would read some gossip, but her interest in it was never as high as her interest in food.
“I mean, when you see Dan Ruijing, stay away from her. Don’t go near her like you did today. The farther away you are, the better,” Lu Xibie sat across from Zhu Xiaotao and said seriously.
“Why?” Zhu Xiaotao raised an eyebrow, and her chewing slowed down. “You don’t like Dan Ruijing, do you?”
“That’s right.”
“Then why do you want me to stay away from her? Aren’t you like what the post said, eyeing someone else while you’re with…” Zhu Xiaotao’s eyes narrowed, showing a hint of disdain.
“What are you talking about?” Lu Xibie sighed. “This is a warning for you. For your own safety, stay as far away from Dan Ruijing as you can when you see her. I can’t tell you anything else.”
“Really?” The seriousness in Lu Xibie’s eyes, which was different from usual, made Zhu Xiaotao believe her a little.
“Really.”
Lu Xibie’s reputation as the little tyrant was big, but it was nothing compared to her mother Lu Yanhua’s reputation in the Federation.
Since Lu Xibie was telling her this over and over again, there must be a reason for it.
“Okay! I’ll stay away from her in the future,” Zhu Xiaotao promised.
Lu Xibie: “One more thing, I’m moving dorms.”
“Moving where?” Zhu Xiaotao stopped eating and stared straight at Lu Xibie. Although Lu Xibie had a terrible reputation, she had found her to be a pretty good person during their time together.
Lu Xibie: “To live with Chu Liruo, in building Z-7.”
Zhu Xiaotao: “If you’re living with her, what about me?”
Lu Xibie: “If the school doesn’t have a new arrangement, you should be living alone.”
Zhu Xiaotao: “What about Chu Liruo’s roommate?”
“She’s also living alone,” Lu Xibie paused and said with emphasis, “Chu Liruo’s roommate is Dan Ruijing.”
“Oh,” Zhu Xiaotao nodded repeatedly, strengthening her resolve to stay away from Dan Ruijing.
Lu Xibie and her wife both moved out, so Dan Ruijing must be someone to avoid.
Seeing that Zhu Xiaotao had taken in everything she said, Lu Xibie threw the empty potion bottle into the automated recycling bin, walked to the window, and started packing her things. She didn’t have much, so it was a quick process.
Zhu Xiaotao hadn’t even finished the new bag of beef jerky she had just opened when Lu Xibie had already finished packing and was ready to leave. She looked at Zhu Xiaotao, who was eating with relish. “Is the beef jerky good?”
“It’s good! Of course it’s good, I gave it to you! You should try some.” Zhu Xiaotao saw the items in Lu Xibie’s hand, picked up a few pieces of beef jerky from the table, and tossed them to her. “Here, have a few more. You can let Chu Liruo try some too.”
“Okay, thanks.” Lu Xibie caught them in one hand and put them in her pocket. “I’m going now.”
Zhu Xiaotao: “Come visit me sometime.”
“I will.” Lu Xibie closed the door and walked toward the direction of the cafeteria.
When she left building Z-7, the sky was still a little bright, but now it was almost completely dark.
“Registration successful.”
Lu Xibie swiped her electronic key card in front of the door and pushed it open to a pitch-black room.
She lightly touched the button on the wall, and a warm, yellow light slowly lit up from the wall. The brightness wasn’t high, but it was enough to see the surroundings.
Lu Xibie carefully closed the door, holding the food as she walked into the inner room.
With the faint light from outside, she could see that the person inside was soundly asleep, her breathing even.
When Chu Liruo was asleep, she resembled the spirit bunny she had summoned—curled up, with her hands clasped together in front of her chest.
Lu Xibie placed the food in the insulated box by the bed and gently pulled the blanket from the side of the bed to cover Chu Liruo.
Chu Liruo looked beautiful even in the dim light. Her eyelashes were long and slightly curled, and her long, seaweed-like hair fanned out on the pillow, like a medieval oil painting.
Lu Xibie forgot how long she had stood there. She only remembered that by the time she walked out of the room, the food she had placed on the outer table had only a slight bit of warmth left.
