Roommate Won't Spoil His Pretty Boyfriend? Fine, I'll Do It - Chapter 7
When Mu Nian rushed to the hospital, he heard the sounds of an argument outside the ward. Pushing the door open, he saw Bai Shijin with red eyes, choking Ye Qinfan by the neck.
Ye Qinfan’s face was flushed, and he let out painful whimpering noises from his throat.
“Stop!”
Mu Nian dashed over, shoved Bai Shijin away, and said with a look of deep worry, “Qinfan! Are you alright? How did it turn out like this?”
Mu Nian.
Bai Shijin’s consciousness cleared slightly the moment he saw Mu Nian. He retreated in panic, watching as Ye Qinfan weakly slumped against Mu Nian’s abdomen, grievance in his voice. “Cough, cough, Niannian, I am fine. Why did you come?”
“Your emergency contact was listed under my name. The hospital called me.”
Mu Nian hugged Ye Qinfan’s head in a comforting manner, patting it absentmindedly while casting his gaze toward Bai Shijin.
Bai Shijin felt a chill run through his entire body, finding the scene utterly ironic.
He and Ye Qinfan were on opposite sides, and Mu Nian had chosen to stand with Ye Qinfan.
“Shijin, what is going on? Did the two of you get into a fight?”
Bai Shijin let out a small, quiet hum from his throat.
Mu Nian asked, “Why did you fight?”
Bai Shijin had no injuries on his face or body, looking every bit like the aggressor. The look Mu Nian gave him was filled with disbelief, but he was not afraid of being misunderstood by Mu Nian; someone else should be the one feeling terrified right now.
He shifted his gaze to Ye Qinfan and tossed the question right back. “Ask him.”
Hearing this, Mu Nian pushed Ye Qinfan away from his embrace and demanded, “You tell me, what is going on? Why did you fight?”
Ye Qinfan said guiltily, “It is nothing, nothing. We just had a small disagreement. We are young and hot-blooded, so we lost control and threw punches, but we already made up. We have been brothers for two years; there are no overnight grudges.”
Mu Nian looked at the completely unharmed Bai Shijin, then looked at Ye Qinfan’s bandaged face, and asked, “Was it a mutual brawl?”
Feeling that admitting to being beaten up unilaterally was too humiliating, Ye Qinfan weakly replied, “A mutual brawl.”
After saying that, he felt the need to explain himself further. “Don’t let his lack of visible injuries fool you, those are all internal wounds.”
Mu Nian’s tone dropped. “Are you proud of this?”
“It will not happen again, Niannian.”
Mu Nian was simply too exhausted. Having worked overtime until now, dealing with frustrations at work, and now having to divide his attention to handle this immature boyfriend.
He sighed. “Stop bringing age into this. Both of you are twenty years old, not children. Is controlling your emotions really that difficult? No matter what kind of conflict you have, no matter how severe, you cannot use a physical fight to solve things.”
Mu Nian had lived seven years longer than the two of them, and his emotional stability allowed him to finish his lecturing and sweep the matter under the rug.
During this time, Ye Qinfan kept signaling Bai Shijin with his eyes not to speak.
Bai Shijin pretended not to see, but because he was mindful of Mu Nian’s heart condition, he did not dare bring it up either.
Mu Nian checked the time and saw it was already half past two in the morning. Huddling at the hospital was not a solution, so he took the initiative to say, “It is getting late. I will drop Shijin back at school, and you should get some proper rest.”
Bai Shijin was pleasantly surprised, his eyelashes trembling.
Ye Qinfan obviously did not want the two of them to be alone, so he put on an act. “Niannian, I am scared. Stay here in the hospital with me. Let Shijin take a taxi back, and I will reimburse his fare, alright?”
Bai Shijin flashed a fierce look at him.
“It is so late, finding a taxi will be difficult. I will drop him off at school and come right back.” Mu Nian tucked the blanket around Ye Qinfan, then said to Bai Shijin, “Let us go.”
Mu Nian walked in front while Bai Shijin followed behind, deliberately turning back to look at Ye Qinfan one last time.
Ye Qinfan pressed his hands together, rubbing them up and down, panic filling his eyes as he mouthed a plea to Bai Shijin, “Do not tell him, I am begging you, do not tell him.”
Bai Shijin gave him no definitive answer and followed Mu Nian out of the ward.
The air outside the hospital was exceptionally crisp, and the nighttime breeze carried the sweetness of the flower beds.
Mu Nian unlocked his car and motioned for Bai Shijin to get in.
Hesitating for a second between the back seat and the passenger seat, Bai Shijin decisively opened the front passenger door.
He obediently fastened his seatbelt, staring straight ahead and waiting for Mu Nian to start the engine.
Mu Nian remained silent until the car was moving smoothly before speaking. “Qinfan said you have internal injuries. Is that true? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
What internal injuries.
Bai Shijin spoke the truth. “No, I am fine. Thank you for giving me a ride, Mr. Mu.”
Mu Nian pointed to the bag in the back seat and said, “There is my business card in the small side pocket of the bag. Take one. If you feel any physical discomfort, come to the address on it and find me, and I will take you for a checkup.”
Bai Shijin paused, his brain automatically filtering out some words and only catching: “Come find me.”
He nodded, murmured an acknowledgement, and pulled a business card out of the bag.
Under the dim light, he read the text printed on it: DEW Clothing Design Company, Designer, Mu Nian.
So Mu Nian was a designer.
No wonder he posted bits and pieces of photo studios on his Moments.
Bai Shijin carefully slipped the business card into his pocket, and when he went to place the bag back down, his hand brushed against a hard umbrella in the back seat.
He picked it up and saw it was an oil-paper umbrella.
It looked very much like the one Mu Nian had tossed to him, yet slightly different.
Noticing Bai Shijin’s confusion out of the corner of his eye, Mu Nian explained, “I designed and made this umbrella myself. I originally planned to give it to Qinfan, but I did not expect to run into you first.”
A wave of jubilation welled up in Bai Shijin’s heart, and he asked, “Is it a couple design?”
“Ah.” It was indeed a couple design, but now that the umbrella had not reached its intended recipient, calling it a couple design felt somewhat inappropriate. Mu Nian said, “The styles are just similar, I would not call it that. I keep it for collection purposes. Very few people use oil-paper umbrellas nowadays, but it happened to be in the car that day, and since you needed it, I just tossed it to you.”
“Thank you,” Bai Shijin said. “Trading a name for such a valuable umbrella, would that not be a loss for you?”
Mu Nian smiled. “Meeting is a matter of fate. Not everything needs to be an equivalent exchange, otherwise, it loses its human touch.”
Bai Shijin turned his head to look at Mu Nian. His side profile was superior, the clear and smooth lines of his jaw and the tip of his nose resembling a painting. Such a visage, paired with his gentle voice, was impossible to resist.
Bai Shijin felt utterly sinful, feeling a secret sense of elation that Ye Qinfan turned out to be trash.
That way, Mu Nian would discover his true colors sooner or later. When that day came, might he finally have a chance to stand by Mu Nian’s side?
“If you really want to thank me, listen to what I have to say.” Mu Nian focused on driving, unaware that the person in the passenger seat had been staring at him so intensely it felt like sparks were flying. “Qinfan was raised in a pampered environment. He is arrogant, speaks without thinking, and only realizes something is wrong after the words are out. That kind of personality easily offends people, so please do not hold it against him.”
Bai Shijin’s entire attention was locked onto Mu Nian’s slightly plump lips, not hearing a single word, and he simply nodded foolishly. “Mm.”
“Then can you tell me what the two of you were fighting over?” Hitting a red light, Mu Nian stepped on the brakes and turned his head. Their eyes met, and Bai Shijin, terrified of being caught openly staring, hurriedly looked away.
