Rich Cat A Would Never Fall in Love with a Fake Heiress - Chapter 6
Mo Li raised her hand and drained the last of her milk tea in one gulp, then immediately countered with a question.
“Haven’t been doing well lately?”
Luo Licheng called over a waiter and ordered a latte. With a bitter smile, he replied, “I didn’t expect even a workaholic like you to know.”
He added two sugars and a portion of cream to his latte, explaining as he stirred.
“Not long ago, my father’s ex-wife passed away, leaving behind this child. That lady was a stubborn one, she never once mentioned this child before.”
“Luo Liming came knocking on his own. At first, my father didn’t believe him and even dragged him for a paternity test to confirm.”
Mo Li’s fingers twitched slightly as she narrowed her eyes. Luo Licheng’s explanation was riddled with questionable points.
As a businessperson and one of the young leaders among A City’s prominent families, he was skilled at lying and concealing the truth, two abilities he had mastered.
Still, she said nothing and nodded for him to continue.
“Perhaps out of guilt toward that lady, my father personally took Luo Liming under his wing, introducing him to the business. He handed over all the smaller companies suitable for practice and allocated a considerable amount of assets to him.”
Luo Licheng’s gaze sharpened slightly, as if the strong aroma of coffee had dispelled his weariness. “The results don’t seem particularly impressive. The companies he took over have seen some decline in revenue, and a few investments have flopped. Yet, he’s never made any major mistakes, and those companies stabilized fairly quickly.”
Mo Li drew out her response with interest, straightening up and propping her chin on her hand. “Oh? With Old Man Luo doting on him like that, aren’t you worried?”
Luo Licheng smiled wryly. “Aside from the guilt, it’s probably also because I’m a Beta with no marriage alliance value.”
His expression was harmless, devoid of even a hint of resentment, as if he were some magnanimous saint, ready to accept whatever fate threw at him, whether it was handing over a painstakingly built company or something else.
Mo Li detected nothing unusual and lowered her head to stir her empty cup.
Luo Licheng continued, a trace of confusion in his eyes. “But early this morning, he announced he wanted to call off his engagement with Miss Lin, claiming he’d found a more worthwhile partner.”
Mo Li’s hand stilled. Could it be because of last night with Mo Wang…?
Luo Licheng was also scrutinizing her expression, his searching gaze making her distinctly uncomfortable. “Do you know the reason, Miss Mo Li?”
Mo Li instinctively crossed her arms. “No, I don’t. So, what about the collaboration between our families…?”
Luo Licheng offered an apologetic smile. “My part is fine, and I’ll put in a word with Liming. But the final decision rests with him and my father.”
His words were diplomatic, yet they effectively pushed the problem back to square one, resolving it still required dealing with Luo Liming.
Though it wasn’t an insurmountable issue, given her impression from yesterday, Mo Li wasn’t keen on interacting with Luo Liming.
Feigning impatience, she said, “Luo Licheng, you can’t play the nice guy and maintain the Mo family’s cooperation at the same time. You know that, right?”
Compared to the Luo family’s broad project scope, the Mo family was a robust enterprise blending emerging industries with traditional sectors. Many projects were overseen by the Mo family, and while it was called a collaboration, the Luo family relied more heavily on the Mo family.
Luo Licheng lowered his eyes, as if weighing a decision.
Mo Li, however, offered an olive branch, her tone softening. “I don’t want to make things difficult for you. How about this, give me some insider information. What assets does Luo Liming currently manage?”
After all, the Mo family wasn’t the same as her, Mo Li. Pushing Luo Licheng too hard and severing their personal ties wouldn’t do her any good either.
Luo Licheng looked up with some urgency. “My father has some private assets in my hands as well, but it’s not convenient for me to inquire too deeply…”
Mo Li cut off his rambling. She braced her hands on the table and stood up. Though she was asking a question, her gaze was sharp and resolute, as if she were only confirming a suspicion she had long held.
She spoke slowly, word by word.
“Does Luo Licheng hold any shares in the Mo family?”
…
The conversation ended, and Mo Li stepped into the elevator of the apartment, still mulling over Luo Licheng’s words.
“There are indeed Mo family shares, but they weren’t given to him by his father. He inherited them from his mother, Madame Li.”
“Before Madame Li left A City, she seemed to be on good terms with Mo Wang. Why don’t you go ask her? And while you’re at it, send my regards to Mo Wang for me.”
The floor indicator blinked on the fourth floor for a few seconds before the elevator doors opened. The door to the single-room apartment was right in front of her.
Mo Li pressed down on the door handle.
The door didn’t open. Taking a closer look, she noticed the lock had been replaced with a brand-new digital keypad lock.
The doorplate read 401, she hadn’t come to the wrong place. It had to be Mo Wang’s doing. Mo Li had no choice but to knock.
After a long moment, there was no response from inside, but her phone buzzed with a message.
Mo Wang: 54250, open it yourself.
Mo Li’s temple twitched. She hastily entered the code, pushed the door open, and stepped inside.
“Mo Wang, you-”
Her words were cut short as an overwhelming wave of blueberry scent choked her. A large glass of blueberry juice sat on the dining table, the wardrobe was wide open but completely empty, and the sofa cushions had been pulled off and piled together with throw pillows to form a makeshift den, lined with the missing clothes from the wardrobe. Inside this carefully constructed nest, Mo Wang was curled up, holding a plate of blueberries while watching TV.
Even Mo Li was taken aback by her dramatic nesting behavior.
Mo Wang glanced over, her eyes glistening as if she had endured endless grievances. “There’s not a trace of your scent here. Don’t you ever come back to stay?”
Mo Li sighed in resignation and released a wave of soothing pheromones. The air grew thick with a sweet-and-sour fragrance, almost dripping with moisture. She then began dismantling Mo Wang’s little nest, bending down to pick up the clothes one by one.
“How did you change the lock?”
Mo Wang, now satisfied, was in high spirits.
“I found your ID in the drawer, showed it to the locksmith, and paid a little extra.”
“Then why didn’t you leave?”
Mo Wang was unusually compliant today, answering every question. “It’s Mom’s birthday today. I really wanted to go back with you.”
Mo Li paused. “That’s not possible, is it? Mom and Dad aren’t Betas. They’d be able to smell our scents.”
Still, it was strange. She had thought Mo Wang would never want to set foot in that hillside villa again.
Looking back now, Mo Li’s parents had treated Mo Wang as nothing more than a disposable tool, casting her aside after she had turned things around. With Mo Wang’s temperament, how could she not hold a grudge?
Lost in thought, Mo Li felt a hand wrap around the back of her neck. A blueberry, held gently between a pair of lips, was brought to her mouth.
Without any reason, they naturally leaned into a kiss.
The blueberry burst in Mo Li’s mouth, a little tart. Its flavor, mingled with Mo Wang’s cool, fragrant pheromones, filled her mouth, then spread to the back of her neck and throughout her entire body.
…
In the evening, the two of them got into the car, their bodies covered with ambiguous marks, and headed together to the Mo family residence.
“Why did you have to provoke me like that?”
Mo Li’s high-collared shirt was wrapped tightly around his neck, looking especially suspicious in the midst of a hot summer day.
Mo Wang, on the other hand, had applied several poorly concealed band-aids. Gazing at the blurry scenery outside the window, he said in a lighthearted tone, “What does it matter? Didn’t I give you the scent-blocking suppressant? Even a police dog wouldn’t be able to smell a thing.”
The guard, seeing the two of them returning home together, looked surprised, his hand trembling slightly before he managed to press the door-opening button.
“It’s been five years since I last came back~” Mo Wang stepped out of the car with a nostalgic sigh, brushed back his hair, and slipped into the sickly sweet smile that Mo Li was all too familiar with. He then pushed open the main door with practiced ease.
