Returning to High School to Save My Wife - Chapter 11
Jiang Yuan was stunned; she never expected Liang Qi to actually voice her inner thoughts.
How did she know I wanted to?
Her train of thought was interrupted by voices from behind.
“Hmm, I support Jiang Yuan too!” Tang Yiman said.
“Jiang Yuan is very suitable,” Duan Shuyu added.
He Wei swept her gaze across the classroom and asked, “Is there anyone else?”
The class fell into a pin-drop silence.
Being the Class Monitor wasn’t as easy as being a Study Representative or a Subject Representative. It required a certain level of influence to lead the class, as well as excellent administrative skills; you had to help the teacher without offending your classmates.
Thus, He Wei said, “In that case, both candidates should go back and prepare a self-recommendation letter explaining why they want to run for Class Monitor. Then, the whole class will vote to decide.”
“For other committee positions, including Subject Representatives, everyone is welcome to sign up.”
Jiang Yuan turned her head and saw Liang Qi twirling her pen. Suddenly, Liang Qi asked, “Are you running?”
It was rare for Jiang Yuan to initiate a conversation, so Liang Qi turned around and winked at her. “Do you want me to run?”
Jiang Yuan was taken aback. “Me?”
What did Liang Qi running for the class committee have to do with her? Why should she want it or not want it?
However, Liang Qi gazed at her with bright eyes, her expression so pure that it seemed as if this were the most natural thing in the world.
“I,” Jiang Yuan’s confusion turned into hesitation.
“Which one do you want me to run for?” Liang Qi asked again, phrased differently this time.
“Naturally, the one you are best at.” Logic won over impulse. Most people would choose their strengths when running for a position.
“Do you know which subject I’m good at?”
“Math?” Jiang Yuan recalled what Qiao Shuxue and Tan Zhiyan had said; Liang Qi seemed to excel in the sciences.
Liang Qi shook her head.
“Biology,” she said. Then, returning her gaze to the podium, she spoke with immense confidence, “Teacher, I want to run for Biology Representative.”
The class erupted in an uproar.
The student ranked dead last in the class wanted to be the Biology Representative?
Was this a joke?
He Wei, standing on the podium, wore a smile. “Student Liang Qi got a perfect score in Biology this time, didn’t she? I heard from your previous homeroom teacher that you’ve won quite a few competition awards.”
The students below were even more shocked.
Liang Qi, the bottom-dweller, was actually that good at Biology?
A low total score paired with a high score in a single subject inevitably led people to think she was weak in everything else. This girl, she must be severely lopsided in her subjects, right?
Even Jiang Yuan was surprised.
Because of Liang Qi’s unusual behavior, her impression of her had always been mediocre. Before this, she, like the other students, had assumed Liang Qi was a poor student who used family connections to coast through school. Who would have thought she actually had a subject she excelled in? And it was Biology, Jiang Yuan’s own weakest subject.
“Does anyone else want to run for Biology Representative?” He Wei asked.
Silence fell over the room.
Competing against a student who had a perfect score and competition awards? That was just asking for humiliation.
Even Hang Jiao, who had originally intended to raise her hand, silently pulled it back.
He Wei nodded. “Since there are no other candidates, it’s settled: Student Liang Qi will serve as the Biology Representative.”
By the end of the period, it was finalized that Tang Yiman would be the Arts Representative, Duan Shuyu would be the Sports Representative, and Chen Jiayue would be the Study Representative. The other Subject Representatives were also decided. As for the Class Monitor and the Life Representative positions, there was more than one candidate for each, so a vote would be held the following day.
After class, Yue Suxin followed He Wei to the office. Liang Qi’s gaze followed her, and she occasionally winked at Jiang Yuan, clearly in a great mood. Noticing her expression, Jiang Yuan asked, “That letter, did you help swap it?”
“What do you think?” A smug smile played on Liang Qi’s lips as she twirled her pen beautifully.
Jiang Yuan looked at her quietly. “Thank you.”
Liang Qi hadn’t expected her to say thanks and was momentarily stunned before she couldn’t help but laugh. “We’re desk-mates; why be so polite?”
Hearing this, Jiang Yuan’s habitually cold expression softened slightly.
Liang Qi suddenly thought of something, took out her phone, and waved it at Jiang Yuan. “If you really want to thank me, how about giving me your contact info?”
Jiang Yuan was a bit taken aback.
She thought Liang Qi would ask for a favor, but instead, she just wanted her contact information.
“Don’t be so stingy, okay?” Seeing Jiang Yuan’s lack of reaction, Liang Qi assumed she was unwilling and pouted. “I just want to look out for my desk-mate. In case I forget the homework or need to discuss a difficult problem, it’s better to have someone to talk to.”
Last time, Jiang Yuan hadn’t given Liang Qi her contact info simply because they weren’t close, and Liang Qi’s behavior back then had been suspicious. Now that they were desk-mates, exchanging contact info was perfectly reasonable.
So, she recited her number: “133.”
Liang Qi saved the number in her contacts, then copied it to search on WeChat. “Is your WeChat ID your phone number?”
Given their relationship in their past lives, Liang Qi knew very well that Jiang Yuan’s phone number was her WeChat ID; asking was just a formality. This was a golden opportunity to add Jiang Yuan as a friend, and she naturally had to seize it.
“Yeah.” As soon as Jiang Yuan finished speaking, she received a friend request.
Liang Qi’s WeChat name was very cute, “Cookie Biscuit,” while Jiang Yuan’s nickname was simple, “Yuan.”
After the request was accepted, Liang Qi waved her phone again with a sweet smile. “Contact me if anything comes up.”
“Okay, contact me if anything comes up,” Jiang Yuan replied, her voice flat and devoid of emotion.
In the afternoon, they had their first PE class of the semester.
The PE teacher was a young new woman named Chen Hong.
In high school PE, the 800-meter run was inevitable. After warming up, the class formed two lines to run two laps around the track. Liang Qi and Jiang Yuan were in different lines.
Liang Qi had loved sports during her student days. She had learned golf from a young age, and swimming and volleyball were her specialties. She often practiced at the gym on weekends, so her physical fitness was top-tier. Running 800 meters was a piece of cake for her.
But considering the constitution she had shown in front of Jiang Yuan, she decided to be careful.
To avoid blowing her cover, she intentionally slowed her pace.
By contrast, Jiang Yuan’s physical condition didn’t adapt to the 800-meter run quite so easily. Although she didn’t have a sickly constitution, she had been thin since childhood and rarely exercised on purpose. Consequently, after two laps, she was out of breath.
“How do you feel?” After the run, Liang Qi saw Jiang Yuan bent over with her hands on her knees, her chest heaving. She reached out to rub Jiang Yuan’s back to help her catch her breath.
“I’m okay,” Jiang Yuan’s sweat had nearly soaked through her T-shirt. She breathed heavily for a while, then suddenly realized that Liang Qi wasn’t panting at all. She hesitated. “You, how are you not out of breath after running 800 meters?”
In her eyes, a sickly person like Liang Qi, who was sick every other day and needed constant care, should have been struggling with the run.
“I, I don’t feel good either,” Liang Qi suddenly began to pant rapidly. She grabbed a nearby tree for support and slumped against it. “I feel dizzy and my breathing is uneven.”
Jiang Yuan was stunned. In that moment, she even forgot her own weak legs. She saw Liang Qi leaning against the tree with a pale face, her body swaying as if she might faint at any second.
Was she having an episode?
“Are you alright?” Jiang Yuan asked hesitantly.
“Not, not really. I feel terrible,” Liang Qi clutched her chest, breathing in short gasps.
Just then, the teacher’s startled voice sounded nearby.
“What’s wrong with this student? Is she in shock?” Chen Hong walked over quickly, supporting Liang Qi’s body, and instructed Jiang Yuan, “Hurry and take her to the infirmary.”
Liang Qi felt a chill in her heart.
She had overacted.
“Teacher, I’m fine. I just need to rest.”
“No, you don’t look good. Don’t gamble with your health. Next time you feel unwell, speak up early; don’t force yourself to finish,” Chen Hong said firmly. She then looked at Jiang Yuan. “Take her to the infirmary and let the doctor check her over.”
“Understood, Teacher.” Jiang Yuan helped Liang Qi up and said, “I’ll take you to the infirmary.”
Liang Qi knew perfectly well her body was fine, but since the arrow was already on the string, there was no turning back; she had to keep up the act. She gave Jiang Yuan a pitiful look. “I’m so sorry, I’m troubling you again.”
“It’s fine.” Even if it weren’t, she couldn’t bring herself to say it. Besides, she had been troubled several times already.
“It’s all because my constitution is too weak.”
“…” Jiang Yuan decided not to argue with someone who was feeling unwell.
The infirmary was near the playground.
The school doctor listened to Jiang Yuan’s explanation, gave Liang Qi a simple check-up, and kept her there for observation.
“The girl is mostly fine,” the doctor said, adjusting his glasses. “Do you still feel unwell?”
“I, I’m struggling to breathe a bit,” Liang Qi clutched her chest, forcing the act to continue. “I’ll be fine after a rest.”
“Probably ran too fast,” the doctor said with a smile. “Didn’t exercise during summer break, did you? You can’t rush into it when you start exercising again. Run slowly, and if you can’t keep up, tell the teacher. Don’t overexert yourself.”
Liang Qi nodded. “Thank you, doctor. I’ll be careful in the future.”
The doctor looked up at Jiang Yuan. “You’re her classmate, right? She needs to stay for observation for a bit longer. Stay here with her for a while.”
“Understood, Teacher.”
Jiang Yuan saw that Liang Qi’s face still looked pale, so she asked, “How are you now? Thirsty?”
Liang Qi said bashfully, “A little.”
“I’ll go buy you a bottle of water.” Jiang Yuan looked out toward the vending machines. “What do you want to drink?”
“Just mineral water.”
“Wait for me then. I’ll also update Teacher Chen on the situation.”
After Jiang Yuan left the infirmary, Liang Qi breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, she was quick-witted enough not to let Jiang Yuan become suspicious.
“Little girl, your classmate is quite nice. Are you two friends?” the doctor asked with a smile.
“Desk-mates,” Liang Qi paused, then added, “And friends. She treats me very well.”
“Hehe, I can tell.”
After Liang Qi chatted with the doctor for a bit, Jiang Yuan returned with the water.
Jiang Yuan unscrewed the cap and handed it to her. “I’ve already asked the teacher for a leave of absence for you.”
“Thank you,” Liang Qi took the bottle and took a sip. Seeing Jiang Yuan’s hands were empty, she handed the bottle, from which she had only taken one sip, back to her. “You must be thirsty too? Have some.”
“Uh,” Jiang Yuan stared at the bottle Liang Qi had just drunk from and hesitated.
Two people drinking from the same bottle, wasn’t that basically…
There was no need. Really, no need.
