- Chapter 6 - Dragon!
The evening meal passed quickly amidst the group’s cheerful chatter. With everyone’s care, Illycia returned to her room after dinner.
“Welcome back, Princess,” Xiaobai said, having already finished her meal and waited in the room for Illycia’s arrival.
“Mhm, good evening, Xiaobai,” Illycia replied, her face beaming with joy. She was delighted to have shared dinner with her family, who had all been so kind to her.
“Is no one outside?” Xiaobai asked, glancing at the empty corridor. She immediately switched from her formal demeanor to a secretive, conspiratorial one.
“Don’t worry, they’re all gone. Quick, tell me what happened outside!” Illycia said, her face lighting up with excitement.
It was no wonder Illycia was so eager. In her current state, she couldn’t even leave the Royal Palace, let alone venture beyond its walls to play. She had begged her parents to let her go out before, but they had always refused sternly, leaving her no choice but to give up.
And so, Illycia made a pact with Xiaobai, the little white creature by her side. Xiaobai would share news and gossip from the outside world, adding some color to Illycia’s otherwise dull and monotonous life.
After all, Illycia’s attempts to go outside had proven futile, and her parents remained unyielding. This was the only way for her to learn about the world beyond her gilded cage.
As Xiaobai gazed into Illycia’s amethyst-like eyes, she found the princess both adorable and beautiful, yet couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity for her.
Xiaobai had initially wondered why someone as beautiful and beloved as Illycia would ever consider jumping off a building. But after spending time by her side, she finally understood the princess’s despair.
It was like a noble and beautiful canary, forever trapped in a cage. Denied its freedom, the bird would eventually wither and perish, driven to self-destruction.
After all, no living creature can truly abandon its pursuit of freedom.
“Alright, Your Highness,” Xiaobai said softly. “I’ll tell you everything slowly…”
Xiaobai recounted to Illycia all the news she had gathered during her shopping trip that day. As Illycia listened with rapt attention, her mind conjured vivid images of the wonders beyond the palace walls.
No matter how magnificent the Royal Palace might be, it could never rival the awe-inspiring grandeur of nature’s artistry—at least, that’s how Illycia saw it.
Confined for nearly a month, Illycia had grown weary of the unchanging scenery. Though she had once found palace life quite pleasant, the prolonged confinement had kindled a longing for the outside world.
“Oh, right! There’s something important I heard—the long-dormant Dragon Race has resurfaced!”
Xiaobai’s words instantly captured Illycia’s attention.
“What?! The Dragon Race?!”
“Yes, but it’s just a rumor. A wandering bard claims to have encountered a long-dormant Dragon and even composed a poem about his encounter…”
During her confinement, Illycia had occasionally turned to books to alleviate her boredom.
Illycia’s newfound habit of reading books came as a shock to her older siblings, and even her parents.
They had heard that the original Illycia had been unable to read. Any attempt to read or study would cause her to faint immediately. But now, this new Illycia could actually read, which brought them immense joy for quite some time.
Illycia herself was deeply grateful. She was relieved that she hadn’t inherited the original owner’s bizarre condition—fainting from excessive focus on a single task. Without this, she might have truly gone mad.
Speaking of books, Illycia had learned about the Dragon Clan. According to legend, they were an incredibly powerful race, so formidable that even the most ordinary adult Dragon was equivalent to nearly twenty Overlord Mages among humans!
Yet this very power had led to the Dragon Clan’s extreme rarity. Perhaps because of their overwhelming strength, Dragons had remained conspicuously absent from all racial wars throughout history, acting instead as silent, powerful observers watching other races slaughter each other.
Coupled with the Dragon Clan’s natural inclination for secrecy, this meant that dragons existed almost exclusively in books. Ninety-nine percent of people would never see a dragon in their lifetime.
Therefore, the recent appearance of a dragon had become a major news event.
“According to the poem, the dragon was a staggering fifty meters tall, its entire body covered in black scales that seemed welded to its flesh like steel. With its wings fully extended, it spanned nearly a hundred meters!”
“Wow!!”
As Xiaobai vividly described the creature, Illycia’s mind conjured an image of the massive, majestic beast, and she couldn’t help but gasp in awe.
“If only I could encounter a dragon just once!”
Illycia listened to Xiaobai’s account, her excitement growing.
Whether in her previous life or this one, Illycia had never seen a dragon. She had only ever heard of them, and in her previous world, dragons existed solely in books, completely absent from reality.
But in this world, dragons truly existed! How could Illycia not be thrilled?
“Maybe we shouldn’t,” Xiaobai said, shaking her head vigorously as if the very thought of dragons frightened her. “I’ve heard dragons are really fierce, and they’re so huge… Eek!”
In this world, though few had ever seen a dragon, the impression of their immense power was deeply ingrained in everyone’s minds, making most people fear them.
Even the old tale of the Big Bad Wolf kidnapping disobedient children—a story originally used to scare children in Illycia’s previous life—had been replaced with one about dragons abducting naughty children.
This showed how dragons were perceived in this world: as beings both powerful and terrifying.
What Illycia couldn’t quite understand was why dragons had become the villains in these scary stories when the real enemies were vampires and demons.
“Alright, that’s enough for today, Princess. You should get some sleep now.”
“Mm… I’m actually a little tired too. Yawn~“
Illycia yawned, rubbed her eyes, and lay down on the bed.
Before long, Illycia had fallen asleep.
In her dream, Illycia saw the Dragon Xiaobai had described. The Dragon was incredibly kind to her, nothing like the cold-blooded, merciless creature people spoke of—the kind that devoured humans.
She even dreamed of riding on the Dragon’s back, becoming a Dragon Knight for a day!
But of course, it was all just a dream…
