Chapter 5: The Gift
“No, I’m not.” Wen Yan wanted to retreat but found she had nowhere to go. Her back was already pressed against the plain wall. Unless she had the ability to walk through walls, it was impossible for her to escape Xu Ruozhou’s grasp.
Wen Yan pretended to puff out her chest and patted her negligibly flat chest. “You’re my Omega, how could I be afraid of you? I can’t spoil you enough!”
Xu Ruozhou: …
Recalling the events at the hotel, Xu Ruozhou’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “Wen Yan, I don’t care what history you had with Xu Mingxin, nor do I care what your purpose is in suddenly claiming to like me. We are now bound together. The Xu family shares we receive after marriage…”
Before she could finish, Wen Yan quickly interjected, “They’re all yours!”
Wen Yan knew how much Xu Ruozhou had sacrificed for that 5%. She stated firmly, “As long as you agree to marry me, I won’t take a single penny of the Xu family shares!”
Xu Ruozhou finally nodded in satisfaction. “Since tonight is Xu Mingxin’s birthday banquet, I need to attend as her nominal sister. Since we’ve settled the share issue, I’ll…”
Xu Ruozhou prepared to leave. At a banquet that offered maximum networking opportunities, she had no intention of wasting time staying with this useless Alpha from the Wen family.
“Hey, wait a moment.” Wen Yan’s finger brushed against the delicate skin of the Omega’s pale arm. She felt a jolt like an electric shock and quickly withdrew her hand, blushing.
Xu Ruozhou glanced at her in confusion. She saw the Alpha fidgeting, pulling out a crudely wrapped box tied with a ribbon from her bag and handing it to her.
Xu Ruozhou frowned, “What is this?”
Wen Yan gave her a flattering smile. “Your gift. Happy Birthday.”
Xu Ruozhou was taken aback.
She and Xu Mingxin were born on the same day in the same month of the same year. They were switched in the hospital by a pair of women, leading to the dramatic true/fake daughter scenario.
Only the Xu family knew this detail. How did Wen Yan know the inside story?
“Thank you,” Xu Ruozhou pursed her lips.
Seeing that she accepted the gift, the Alpha’s dark eyes brightened again, like a Golden Retriever whose fur had been stroked by its owner—obedient and affectionate.
Yay!
I’m too good at boosting the female lead’s favorability.
Wen Yan was pleased with herself, her face glowing.
Xu Ruozhou’s internal doubts, however, grew stronger.
The changes in Wen Yan could no longer be simply explained by saying she was in love.
A Xu family servant knocked on the room door to escort them downstairs for the birthday celebration of the party’s main character, Xu Mingxin. Xu Ruozhou followed behind, the Alpha’s tall, slender back almost completely overshadowing her.
Xu Ruozhou lowered her eyelashes, looking at the long, thin shadow under the light, a trace of ruthlessness flashing in her eyes.
No one could interfere with her plan. If Wen Yan became that variable…
Then she would have to strike first and send her to join the Wen family’s deceased parents sooner.
Xu Mingxin’s birthday banquet officially began.
The well-proportioned Omega had changed into a new dress. The light purple skirt had intricate patterns. The hotel staff adjusted the direction of the indoor fans so that the expensive, custom-made dress would gently lift and sway.
Xu Mingxin smiled sweetly, wearing a genuine gold and silver custom-made crown on her beautiful blonde hair. Mr. and Mrs. Xu sat beside her, their doting gazes like those of a king watching a pampered princess raised in luxury.
Wen Yan was tucked into the crowd, but her eyes involuntarily landed on the figure in the azure backless dress. Even as an outsider, she could tell the Xu couple’s partiality.
Xu Ruozhou had an ethereal temperament, but the dress she wore was clearly ill-fitting, with a loose section around the waist. Xu Mingxin’s light purple balloon-shaped dress, however, hugged her curves perfectly, clearly tailored for her by a top designer.
Wen Yan pursed her lips, looking at the female lead with some sympathy. Although Xu Ruozhou would be powerful and omnipotent in the future, at this moment, she could only survive by pleasing the Xu family.
Only the identity of the Xu family’s daughter could allow this rose, fought for in barren soil, to bloom in a wider world.
As if sensing her gaze, Xu Ruozhou’s reddish-brown eyes looked over. Wen Yan guiltily looked away, pretending to watch Xu Mingxin open gifts.
“Oh my gosh, isn’t this the jade necklace I missed at the auction?!”
Xu Mingxin unwrapped the exquisitely packaged gift box and raised the jade necklace in her hand with a gasp of surprise. Twenty-five translucent jade beads encircled a central ring-shaped ruby like stars around the moon.
Receiving this extremely expensive gift, a hint of pride flashed in Xu Mingxin’s eyes. She deliberately swung the jade necklace in front of Xu Ruozhou to show off.
The little princess of the Xu family smiled shyly, “Whose gift is this?”
The silver-haired Alpha in the crowd quickly squeezed through, as if another second of delay would mean her credit would be stolen. “I-it’s my gift!”
Wen Yan took a closer look. It was indeed Li Yuan, the cannon fodder who had stood up for Xu Mingxin at the banquet.
“Thank you, Sister Li Yuan, I love it~” Xu Mingxin said sweetly and playfully.
“As long as you like it!” Li Yuan’s gaze didn’t linger on the star of the birthday party for long. She smugly dragged the hiding Wen Yan to the front and asked, “Wen Yan, what gift did you prepare for Mingxin?”
Wen Yan was speechless at her Alpha-competing behavior.
Li Yuan snorted. She had almost been fooled by this useless Wen family Alpha. What a manipulative Alpha, deliberately keeping distance from Mingxin, surely to attract the pure Mingxin’s attention!
Now, she was going to reclaim her status in Mingxin’s heart. Li Yuan was certain that her gift was the most expensive and best of all the gifts!
Xu Ruozhou lowered her gaze but also focused on Wen Yan. She also wanted to know what Wen Yan had prepared for Xu Mingxin.
A few months ago, Wen Yan had spent a fortune at an auction to buy a priceless blue diamond from a bankrupt collector. Xu Mingxin had been talking about this blue diamond necklace, once worn by royalty, for days at home.
“Sister Wen Yan, which one is your gift?”
Xu Mingxin smiled sweetly, but deep down, she was unsure. The message brought by the driver said Wen Yan couldn’t afford the blue diamond necklace, yet she had heard from the auction organizer that Wen Yan was the winning bidder.
Wen Yan pointed to a small, exquisite box in the corner. Xu Mingxin took the box, weighed its size, and slowly breathed a sigh of relief.
Sure enough, Wen Yan still liked her. Xu Mingxin triumphantly glanced at Xu Ruozhou standing nearby, her gaze seeming to say: See? Your Alpha has always been in love with me!
Xu Ruozhou’s eyes remained cold, and her expression showed no change.
Xu Mingxin rubbed her hands together, full of anticipation for the necklace. She pulled apart the ends of the black velvet ribbon. Seeing the familiar blue color, Xu Mingxin’s eyes lit up, and she exclaimed in surprise, “Wow!”
The crowd, following her exaggerated sound, fixed their eyes on what must be an incredibly expensive gift. Li Yuan, who had eagerly challenged Wen Yan on who had brought the better gift, was nervously sweating in her palms.
The gift was fully revealed.
“Huh?”
Someone among the surrounding wealthy young heirs was the first to voice their confusion. Xu Mingxin, surrounded like a star, gave an awkward smile. In her hand was a blue-backed, long scroll-like object.
“Sister Wen Yan, what is this?” Her voice gradually became a little gritted.
“Is it a lost work by a famous painter, or an original manuscript by a renowned calligrapher?” Xu Mingxin asked, holding onto her last bit of hope.
Wen Yan shook her head, stepped forward, and took the blue scroll from Xu Mingxin’s hands. She held the scroll with both hands and slowly released her grip on the lower end in front of everyone.
The scroll dropped like a waterfall, revealing several large characters written with a calligraphy brush to the wealthy young heirs who had never witnessed such a sight.
Hap-
py.
Birth-
day.
The black ink on the white paper hadn’t even dried yet.
Everyone was dumbfounded. Wen Yan, however, smiled and rolled up the scroll, placing it back into Xu Mingxin’s open hand. “Do you like it, little sister Mingxin?”
“I spent years contemplating before finally writing this most sincere wish for you with a brush.”
“It’s the thought that counts!”
Ignoring Xu Mingxin’s increasingly strained expression, Wen Yan turned around and clapped her hands, saying, “Let’s wish little sister Xu Mingxin a happy birthday and an early marriage to a worthy man!”
Clap, clap, clap. Wen Yan clapped enthusiastically. The onlookers exchanged confused glances, and a sparse scattering of applause followed.
Wen Yan smiled and clapped persistently. Xu Ruozhou couldn’t help but let out a soft chuckle and joined the crowd in clapping a few times.
Finally, warm applause erupted around the little princess holding the calligraphy scroll.
Xu Mingxin was so angry her face turned green. The spoiled little princess, who usually ordered everyone around, was left stranded here by Wen Yan and could only swallow her anger, forcing out a gentle smile while gritting her teeth, “Thank you, Sister Wen Yan, I love it very much.”
As the banquet ended, Wen Yan stepped out of the glamorous arena of fame and fortune into the dark night, letting out a long sigh of relief.
The day had finally passed without major incident. She hadn’t offended the female lead, and she had formally shown the Alphas pursuing Xu Mingxin that she was out of the competition.
Although she didn’t know why her pheromone level had increased after transmigrating, no thoughtless Alphas should actively bother her after the banquet.
Luxury cars parked at the entrance took away guests one by one. Wen Yan walked along casually, and in a moment when she was completely unaware, a pair of hands quietly reached out from the concealed bushes and firmly grabbed her arm.
Wen Yan was so startled she nearly jumped. Recognizing who it was, she angrily cursed, “You’re a persistent ghost! Li Yuan, are you crazy? You’re stalking me!”
“I’ve already told you, I’m not pursuing Xu Mingxin, I’m not! You don’t believe me and still come looking for trouble? Haven’t you had enough misery at the banquet just now?”
“Why?!” The silver-haired Alpha gnashed her teeth.
Wen Yan frowned slightly, “What ‘why’?”
The silver-haired Alpha shook her shoulders like a madwoman, her bright blue eyes bloodshot. She seemed to be questioning Wen Yan, yet talking to herself, “Why are you giving up?!”
“Everyone likes Xu Mingxin, everyone is pursuing Xu Mingxin! You have to like her too!”
