Chapter 30: Prophecy
Although Xu Ruozhou did not refuse Wen Yan’s idea of bailing out Yin Rong, she did not immediately agree. She still felt that Yin Rong was too dangerous and did not want Wen Yan to have any further contact with him.
“Let’s consider this carefully,” she told Wen Yan. Wen Yan sighed, outwardly agreeing obediently, but Xu Ruozhou knew her character too well.
Although she seemed laid-back and easygoing, she was inherently a stubborn person who was prone to putting herself in dangerous situations.
The sun was bright.
The villa returned to its usual tranquility.
Yin Rong’s intrusion resulted in injuries to many of the servants in the villa. Wen Yan arranged for Lin Xi to allocate some money for their medical treatment and promised to take full responsibility for the incident.
Lin Xi was not seriously injured. After simple bandaging at the hospital, she rushed back to the villa. The Wen family was short-handed. Others could take leave, but she was the housekeeper and couldn’t be like the others.
Inside the house.
Lin Xi was reviewing the recent accounts. When she reached the section on medical expenses, her action of turning the page slightly paused.
“Why is there such a huge difference in money?” Lin Xi murmured. “The accounts don’t match.”
She opened another ledger on her left, suspecting someone had cooked the books. She wanted to trace the source, but instead, she saw Wen Yan’s name at the beginning of the invoice, while the payee was—
A medical specialist in scent glands.
Lin Xi clenched the bill, filled with anxiety and an increasing sense of unease. She worried that Wen Yan knew she had replaced the inhibitors with other drugs.
If this had happened before Wen Yan saved her, she could have remained calm, scolded the abusive jerk, and resigned on the spot, but…
Lin Xi slowly lowered her eyelashes.
But now, she didn’t know what attitude she should adopt toward Wen Yan.
For several days in a row, Lin Xi felt uneasy. Just as criminal suspects always return to the crime scene, she often appeared near Wen Yan, observing whether her attitude toward her had changed.
However, Wen Yan’s attitude toward her seemed to be the same as before.
Wen Yan continued to repeat her fixed daily routine. Apart from a slight increase in worry in her expression, there were no other changes.
Lin Xi couldn’t help but suspect she was mistaken. Did Wen Yan truly not realize she had drugged her?
Until one day, most of the servants in the villa were at the hospital for check-ups, and there weren’t enough people to clean the house. She had no choice but to clean the rooms herself.
While cleaning Wen Yan and Xu Ruozhou’s bedroom table, she suddenly found something that wasn’t there before.
An uncapped bottle of medicine.
To anyone else, it would be an ordinary item, but for Lin Xi.
She knew exactly what the medicine was for. Her heart was filled with mixed feelings. At this moment, how could she not understand?
Wen Yan had known about her drugging all along, but simply chose not to hold it against her.
Two days later, under Xu Ruozhou’s strict watch, Wen Yan finally found an opportunity to sneak into the detention center where Yin Rong was held.
She originally planned to ask Yin Rong if he remembered the words he wanted to say, but she unexpectedly learned from the prison guards—
Wen Yan’s eyes widened. “Yin Rong is dead?!”
“How did he die? Wasn’t he locked up in prison?”
The prison guards exchanged glances, their faces looking grim. “We also didn’t expect him to die so suddenly, but he didn’t die in the prison. He died on the way to another prison.”
“The Association has regulations that death row Alphas with pheromone levels A-grade and above must be held in a high-security Alpha prison. We didn’t expect him to…”
The prison guard regretted his words. “He suddenly broke free from his handcuffs and ran away during the transfer.”
Another guard rolled his eyes. “Don’t blame yourself. Who would have thought he could run while wearing ankle shackles?”
“He brought it upon himself. To escape, he hid in the river while wearing ankle shackles. He deserved to die.”
Wen Yan was stunned. “What did you say?”
“Where did Yin Rong die?”
The guard’s tone was dismissive. “You don’t know? His body was found by the river on the outskirts. He was bloated when discovered, and his body gave off a smell of rotting corpse.”
“Yin Rong’s family has already signed the papers to waive an autopsy and won’t even claim the body. Why are you, the victim, so concerned about the criminal? Dead is dead. He was going to be executed anyway. This just saves us trouble.”
Wen Yan stood rooted to the spot, as if struck by lightning, unable to move for a long time.
The kinder guard thought she was scared. “CEO Wen, are you alright?”
“You are the victim. Don’t worry too much. This kind of criminal deserved to die. Since the final outcome is death anyway, what difference does it make whether it’s sooner or later? Go home soon. Do you need us to send a police car to take you back to the villa?”
Wen Yan recovered from the confusion in her mind and politely refused. “No need.”
She stumbled and turned to leave, but before she went far, she suddenly returned to the prison gate.
The two guards looked at her confusedly. Wen Yan’s tone was serious. “Officers, would it be convenient to tell me which river Yin Rong’s death site was?”
The riverbank on the outskirts.
This was a park on the outskirts. The clear river water shimmered under the sun. Children played and ran around the riverbank, and elderly people sat on the rock structures chatting. The atmosphere was harmonious and lovely, with no trace of the place where a person had died just two days prior.
Wen Yan looked around and was almost laughed at. There wasn’t a single camera here.
Her clue was lost again.
“Yin Rong, you really chose a good place to die,” Wen Yan couldn’t help but curse under her breath. She spoke very softly, but her voice still reached the ears of an elderly woman playing chess in the pavilion.
“Young lady, what did you say?”
Wen Yan looked over and saw a white-haired elderly woman. She quickly waved her hand. “Nothing, ma’am. Please continue your game.”
Yin Rong’s death was not a pleasant topic, and Wen Yan didn’t want to disturb the elderly woman’s game or scare her. She was about to leave and look for clues elsewhere when the elderly woman playing chess suddenly put down her piece and grabbed her sleeve.
Wen Yan looked over, confused. She saw the elderly woman look around, confirming no one was listening, before turning back and showing a serious expression. “You’re talking about the man who was found dead in the river two days ago, aren’t you?”
Wen Yan nodded slightly, a hint of urgency in her voice. “Yes. Do you happen to know something? If you do, please tell me. This matter is very important to me. I…”
The elderly woman looked at her deeply, interrupting her words. “Girl, I have followed my master my entire life, reading fortunes and faces. Don’t mind my candidness, but I must advise you.”
“You do not belong here, nor should you interfere with karma that is not yours, especially the karma of the people around you. Don’t take offense, but if you continue to act against the heavens like this, you will surely meet a tragic end.”
Wen Yan was startled. After a moment, she let out a light laugh. “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
“Since they are people around me, their karma is my karma. If I don’t interfere, then who will?”
“Should I just stand by and watch things that could be avoided happen? If that’s the case, then I apologize, but I can’t do it.”
The young Alpha was persistent and stubborn. The elder carefully examined her expression. After a long time, she sighed. “In that case, that is your destiny, the destiny you chose for yourself.”
Wen Yan’s expression remained unchanged. “Putting aside my destiny for now, can you tell me the clues you know?”
Xu Ruozhou parked her car in the underground garage, removed the key, and walked into the front yard of the villa.
The entire villa was brightly lit. The warm yellow light added a touch of warmth to the dark night. A smile unconsciously spread across Xu Ruozhou’s face, and she quickened her steps home, wanting to quickly return to the warm little nest she shared with Wen Yan.
Pushing open the door, Xu Ruozhou took off her jacket and called out as usual, “I’m back…”
Before she finished speaking, a pair of warm hands suddenly took the clothes from her hands. Xu Ruozhou focused her gaze.
It was Wen Yan, indeed.
Xu Ruozhou raised an eyebrow. Ever since she forbade Wen Yan from contacting Yin Rong, Wen Yan had been secretly sulking.
Although Wen Yan didn’t say anything, she could tell from the small details of their daily life.
When watching TV together, she added five ice cubes to the cup of cola she gave her; when eating, she only handed her four fries; before bathing at night, she always came out exactly at the seven-minute mark; and the book by the bedside was consistently changed every day.
5-4-7-1, I’m angry.
Xu Ruozhou was amused that Wen Yan could come up with such petty tricks.
Xu Ruozhou pretended to be indifferent. “It’s rare to see you so enthusiastic.”
“Why did you suddenly stop being angry?” Xu Ruozhou said with a half-smile. “Weren’t you hinting at me every day?”
The Alpha shook her head. She suddenly, furtively pulled her into a corner with no surveillance cameras and took out a small bottle from her embrace, spraying it into her palm. Xu Ruozhou tilted her head.
It was cool and had a strange smell. Wen Yan’s movements were cautious and meticulous, not missing even the gaps between her fingers.
Xu Ruozhou curiously looked at the small, unlabeled bottle. “Wen Yan, what are you spraying on me?”
“Why does it smell so strange?”
Wen Yan didn’t speak, just continued to carefully wipe her fingers. Xu Ruozhou frowned slightly.
Only after thoroughly wiping her fingers did the Alpha slowly let out a breath, as if a taut string could finally relax a little.
Xu Ruozhou took the small bottle, which was almost empty, from her hand. “Wen Yan, what exactly is this?”
“Blood trace removal spray.”
Xu Ruozhou paused her movement of examining the bottle. “What?”
“Blood trace removal spray.”
Before Xu Ruozhou could react, the Alpha suddenly grabbed her hand and pulled her entire body into a warm embrace.
The warm palm rested on the back of her head, conveying a faint warmth. She heard a barely perceptible tremor in Wen Yan’s voice.
“Don’t be afraid, Wife. Even if you did it, I will never abandon you.”
Xu Ruozhou finally understood what she meant.
“As long as I’m here, I won’t let anyone have the chance to hurt you.”
Wen Yan was hugging her so tightly that Xu Ruozhou could barely breathe. She tried to push her away slightly, but upon this movement, Wen Yan hugged her even tighter, as if trying to knead her into her own flesh and blood.
“Wen Yan, I can barely breathe. Loosen up a bit.”
Because of the lack of breath, Xu Ruozhou’s face was flushed red. Hearing this, Wen Yan finally relaxed her arms slightly, but she still clung to her like a koala.
Xu Ruozhou sighed. “Wen Yan, I’m very glad you said these things to me tonight.”
Wen Yan wore an expression of “I knew it,” but then Xu Ruozhou suddenly changed the subject. “However—”
“I must tell you that Yin Rong’s death has nothing to do with me.”
