- Chapter 56 - Tell Me the Reason Why You Won't Love Me
After the dance ended, Song Qingxing felt like her body was falling apart. After all, dancing is hard work, and without some skill, it’s easy to end up with a sore back and aching muscles.
After taking a shower, Song Qingxing lay on the soft bed like a desiccated corpse, drained of all energy and unwilling to move.
“What’s wrong?”
Xie Jingcheng walked out of the bathroom, carrying the faint scent of body wash—a milk flavor with a hint of vanilla that smelled very fresh.
“Tired…”
Song Qingxing opened her mouth, letting out a moan that sounded like a dried corpse. Xie Jingcheng was taken aback; this was not at all the sound a sweet female star should be making.
However, Song Qingxing was indeed quite exhausted today. It wasn’t just the few dances that tired her, but the fact that the mind and body become weary after experiencing something startling or nerve-wracking.
Xie Jingcheng had seen how nervous Song Qingxing had been the entire time on the way to meet her grandmother.
A sense of guilt washed over her. If Song Qingxing hadn’t gotten involved with her, she wouldn’t have to bear such immense pressure.
“How about I give you a massage?”
Xie Jingcheng’s hair was mostly dry, her soft, dark locks draped over her shoulders. She was wearing a black lace nightgown today.
The curves beneath the fabric were vaguely visible, making it hard not to let one’s mind wander. Song Qingxing only slightly opened her eyes, catching a glimpse through her lowered lashes, and her cheeks instantly flushed.
This was truly mortifying.
“No need. You danced too, and you’ve been tired all day.”
Song Qingxing shook her head, then tried to burrow under the covers. However, Xie Jingcheng grabbed her hand, her voice gentle.
“It’s alright.”
“I want to massage you.”
Seeing that she couldn’t struggle free, Song Qingxing simply settled in to enjoy it. After all, her patron was offering to be the servant, and as a kept mistress, how could she refuse?
So, she obediently lay face down. Xie Jingcheng got onto the bed, her knee pressing into the soft mattress. Song Qingxing felt the bed sink slightly.
Next, those long, cool fingers traced her waist. It felt like an ant’s legs crawling on her skin, light and ticklish, with the only difference being that these fingers carried a bit of heat.
It felt like a flame licking her skin.
Song Qingxing had initially thought Xie Jingcheng’s massage skills would be haphazard—after all, the other woman was a wealthy heiress who hadn’t had much practice serving others.
But in reality, Xie Jingcheng’s technique was surprisingly good. With light, slow pressure, her sore muscles were thoroughly relieved.
Song Qingxing was already half-asleep when she remembered something important, so she quickly explained.
“Xie Jingcheng, I want to tell you something.”
“My relationship with Shen Yu is truly clean and pure. Please don’t overthink it.”
“You should know what kind of person I am. If I like someone, I’ll pursue them directly; I don’t play games or ambiguous.”
Listening to the little rabbit’s fragmented explanation, Xie Jingcheng increased the strength of her hands. Song Qingxing couldn’t help but let out a soft moan, biting her lip.
To Xie Jingcheng’s ears, the sound was both delicate and alluring.
It was utterly captivating.
“I know.”
She didn’t show any unusual reaction, however, but calmly took over the conversation and continued.
“You know… you know why you won’t let me go to the set?”
Song Qingxing nearly blurted out the question but stopped herself instantly. Song Qingxing, Song Qingxing!
You can’t question Xie Jingcheng. You must speak to her gently and politely so she will want to let you go, instead of keeping you confined like a pervert.
After all, having lived a few extra years, she had gained more experience.
Song Qingxing was no longer the little girl with essentially zero emotional intelligence she used to be. She knew a few tricks and how to appease someone.
“I was just unhappy.”
“And you were the one who suggested the ten-year contract renewal, Qingxing. You want to be my lover for ten years, but you won’t fall in love with me. Why?”
Xie Jingcheng subtly steered the conversation away. She liked the feeling of this back-and-forth with the little rabbit, but she also disliked the fact that the other person had reservations and didn’t want to fall in love with her from start to finish.
“This…”
Well, Song Qingxing finally understood the core problem: Xie Jingcheng had an issue with her. She didn’t know what to say.
She was also afraid that pleading for Shen Yu again would only make Xie Jingcheng dislike her more.
“I’m afraid you’ll dump me.”
Song Qingxing spoke the truth, without any pretense.
“How could I? I like you so much. If I didn’t like you, I wouldn’t have asked you repeatedly.”
Xie Jingcheng leaned in, almost pressing her entire body against Song Qingxing, resting her chin on the other’s shoulder. Heaven knows, she truly liked Song Qingxing.
Why wouldn’t the other person believe her?
Although her assistant had once said that if a person keeps a poker face for too long, even if they make a joke, everyone will assume that the joke holds some underlying meaning, leading them to frantically guess who the joke is aimed at, instead of just taking it as a joke.
She felt that way right now.
Was it because she hadn’t loved someone for too long?
Did Song Qingxing think she wasn’t capable of loving, or that she would abandon the person she loved?
How ridiculous.
Xie Jingcheng couldn’t help but think to herself. She was not the type of person to be fickle.
Liking someone should be a lifelong commitment.
While some people don’t agree with this view, believing that love is as free as the wind—you like who you like and dislike who you dislike, and there’s no need to agonizingly fret over whether you are a scoundrel—Xie Jingcheng did not see it that way.
Due to her nature, she would take responsibility even if she stopped loving someone.
“Feelings can change.”
“That’s why I don’t want to like you.”
Song Qingxing continued to speak the truth. Since Xie Jingcheng would see through any lie, she might as well be honest.
“If I fell in love with a normal person, and they got tired of me, I could try to win them back. I could be a devoted, selfless pursuer without any psychological burden.”
“But I can’t do that with you. If I dared to ask you to reconcile, I’d probably be digging my own grave.”
Song Qingxing gave a self-mocking smile.
“After all, who dares to offend the eldest daughter of the Xie family?”
“Xie Jingcheng, there is a gap in status between you and me, which means we won’t be on equal footing after a breakup.”
Song Qingxing regretted speaking after she finished.
You fool, why tell her all that? She won’t understand you anyway.
She was secretly brooding when suddenly, Xie Jingcheng pressed hard on her waist, making her toes curl up in pain.
Sure enough, telling the truth brings divine retribution.
Honest advice is harsh to the ear. No wonder emperors preferred sycophants. She should have just said some shameless flattery.
Something like, Xie Jingcheng, your charm is too great, I don’t dare to completely fall for you; once I do, I’ll be devoted forever, and so on.
“Song Qingxing, you’re being unfair to me.”
“You won’t even try with me. How can you know if I’ll be unfaithful?”
“If you really don’t trust me, we can get married abroad. Even if we divorce, you can get half of my assets overseas.”
