- Chapter 8 - The Fallen Little Milk Dragon
Xiao Nian swallowed the food in his mouth and pointed out the window. “Going out at a time like this?”
The system had suddenly issued a side quest and even threatened that he had to complete it.
Being constrained by the system, he felt pretty stifled about it too.
“Why ask so many questions? It’s not like you have any other choice anyway.”
Xiao Nian really wanted to wipe the grease from his hands onto the guy’s face. “Fine, I won’t ask.”
So, in the middle of the night, he followed his newly appointed master to an abandoned temple.
Now there was no need to borrow the male lead’s mouth to voice it Shu Chen himself thought this was insane.
“System, you’d better give me a reasonable explanation.”
[Isn’t it good that I’m helping you speed up the mission progress?]
“I don’t recall needing to make an appearance here.”
[From now on, you don’t need to follow that book. Just listen to me.]
[According to the saying where you’re from, this counts as overtime. Once you finish the mission, I can tell you a secret about your transmigration as overtime pay.]
“Then at least tell me what I’m supposed to do, right?”
[You can do whatever you want.]
Shu Chen finally understood the helplessness people felt when they received “whatever” as an answer.
Just as he was thinking about how to deal with the male lead, the male lead standing under the locust tree was suddenly shrouded in black mist, looking like he was about to snatch someone away on this dark, windy night.
His body moved faster than his mind. The moment he grabbed the male lead’s hand, they fell into a strange place.
The instant he landed on top of the male lead, Shu Chen felt a suffocating tightness in his chest.
The male lead he’d crushed let out a muffled groan from the ground. The little pervert didn’t look like he had much meat on him, but he wasn’t light either.
With the male lead as a cushion, Shu Chen’s body was unharmed. He climbed off the male lead, and the moment he looked up, his mind was hit with an immense shock.
Ghosts. All around him were grotesque, misshapen spirits that defied any normal sense of aesthetics.
Directly in front of him, an unidentified creature with its abdomen split open and a head hidden inside slowly shuffled toward them. After just two steps, it went thud its entire body collapsed flat onto the ground.
“So fragrant, Why do I smell the scent of living beings?” The voice came from inside the ghost’s belly.
Hearing the slurping sounds around him, Shu Chen knew there were plenty more lurking in the shadows, both visible and hidden.
“System, where is this?”
[The Ghost Realm. Hold onto the male lead tightly, or you’ll become their food.]
[Oh, and the male lead isn’t in great shape right now either. You two better run.] The system couldn’t help at all and even seemed to carry a hint of amusement at watching the chaos.
Shu Chen looked at the male lead. In his eyes, the man seemed to be on the verge of turning dark, black aura radiating off him.
Now that they were on his own turf, the remnant soul’s power had surged. Struggling, Xiao Nian could only let Shu Chen drag him along as they ran.
If the system had a physical form, the first thing Shu Chen would do was catch it and beat it up. This mission was clearly a trap. He could feel his stamina draining faster and faster, to the point where he couldn’t even match a normal person’s endurance.
[That place up ahead has no ghosts. You can go in.]
Shu Chen kicked open the door and pulled the male lead into this oddly shaped building.
The moment the door shut, he slid down against it, pulling out the spirit-communicating jade pendant to call his parents for help when the system spoke up: “This is the Ghost Realm. Normal people can’t get in. You’d just worry them for nothing.”
[And don’t use spiritual power either. If you’re discovered, those ghosts will swarm you.]
Shu Chen put the spirit stones from his storage ring back inside.
He’d originally wanted to use the spirit stones to replenish his spiritual energy, but the moment the stones were revealed, he sensed the air around him change. It was like a beam of light had lit up in the darkness and he was the living target.
The male lead had already fallen into a state of complete detachment, unable to register what was happening outside.
Shu Chen shifted his position, leaning against the wall, and chatted idly with the system. “This map isn’t in the book.”
The system’s sarcastic voice rang out. “You think one book can cover his entire life? Impossible.”
This system was very likely a traitor. Shu Chen hugged his knees and buried his head in them. After a long while, he whispered softly, “I hate you.”
The system must have heard him, because until Shu Chen lost consciousness, it didn’t say another word.
In such a dangerous environment, Shu Chen dreamed again.
In the dream, he had become a little milk dragon with a tail. His mother held him, teasing and threatening at the same time: “There are bad people everywhere out there. If you show your tail, they’ll catch you and lock you away.”
“We are divine dragons. We grow slower than humans. Some humans are very wicked if you’re different from them, they’ll come looking for trouble. Mother will teach you how to grow up fast.”
“If your spiritual energy runs low, your disguise spell will fade. Remember to always keep spirit stones on you.”
The dream came in fragments, like riding a roller coaster, suddenly jumping to the next scene.
This time, no one from the system called him. Shu Chen didn’t know how long he’d slept before he drifted from the dream back to reality.
The moment he opened his eyes, he saw the male lead sitting beside him, flashing him a strange, mischievous grin.
“Awake? Notice anything off?”
Just from that sentence, Shu Chen knew something was definitely wrong.
He struggled to maintain his master’s composure and sat up only to discover that his clothes were slipping off. Not only that, but at the hem of his robes, he spotted the tip of a silver-white tail.
Shu Chen slowly lifted his head to look at the male lead, who was still laughing, and secretly tried to tuck his tail away. But the tail, which hadn’t been trained in a long time, wasn’t familiar with him it was even more rebellious than the male lead and refused to retract.
What’s worse, he had also shrunk back to his true form.
Xiao Nian grabbed the chubby tail that was impossible to ignore and, under the child’s protesting gaze, laughed even more sincerely. “So you really are a little brother after all.”
“Let go.” After saying those two words, Shu Chen shut his mouth. His voice was soft and weak, completely lacking any intimidation.
Not only did Xiao Nian not let go, but he even squeezed it firmly. A layer of scales covered the flesh, and whether it was because he hadn’t grown up yet or for some other reason, it looked harmless and adorably silly cool to the touch, with a pleasant texture.
Shu Chen didn’t have time to worry about his fallen clothes. No matter how disobedient it was, it was still his own tail, and he couldn’t let it fall into the hands of a villain.
The tables had turned now it was Xiao Nian who had the upper hand. He looked at the child’s stiff little face and suddenly felt like toying with him.
In a few quick moves, he had the child pinned beneath him, still gripping that fleshy tail in his hand, and said with a smile in his voice, “Come on, tell big brother, what kind of creature are you?”
Shu Chen was too sulky to answer, glaring at him with fury. “Once I get back, you’re done for.”
Xiao Nian raised his tail up to his face. “I’m so scared.”
He was all grins and mischief, looking completely unserious. Shu Chen suddenly wished he could make the system rewind time if he had another chance, he definitely wouldn’t have sacrificed himself to save the male lead.
Xiao Nian turned the face that was stubbornly refusing to look at him back toward himself. “That’s quite a secret you’ve got there. What kind of hush money should I ask for?”
Shu Chen patted the ground. “You have secrets too. And if you dare tell anyone about this, Father and Mother won’t let you off.”
Xiao Nian studied him carefully. How could the shrunken version still look like this?
“Small in size, but full of tricks.”
Shu Chen didn’t want to argue with him. This body had genuinely lived for fifteen years he just looked small.
