- Chapter 33.1 - Who Is the Most Adorable Little Snake in the World?
After battling through the entire night, drained of all energy by their assignments, the two nodded listlessly.
Some people might still be alive, but if you touched them, you’d find they’d been “cold” for three hours.
Seeing their condition was genuinely alarming, Jiang Man quickly threw off the covers and got up, offering her bed to the two of them.
At this point, they didn’t even have the strength to banter.
As soon as they saw Jiang Man move aside, they collapsed straight onto the bed and began snoring the next second.
The speed at which they fell asleep left Jiang Man clicking her tongue in amazement.
Ah, youth they could sleep the moment their heads hit the pillow!
Glancing at the time and seeing it was still early, with Wen Qing still asleep, Jiang Man changed her clothes and went downstairs for a morning run.
Although Yigao High’s school rules were quite strict, they were relatively lenient and emphasized certain aspects such as students’ physical fitness.
Jiang Man appeared entirely unconcerned about not having awakened her spiritual entity or undergone differentiation, but in reality, she was quite troubled by it.
Especially when her craving to pet a dog flared up.
Even though there was a large sauce-colored “chicken-feathered” creature and a little “Mr. Bo” who loved showing off his big feet in the dorm, whenever Fang Jin and Mu Qian heard Jiang Man making sounds of wanting to pet a spiritual entity, they would always give her a strange look and quickly retract their spiritual entities.
Jiang Man had complained countless times about their stinginess, but their attitudes remained resolute.
No petting meant no petting. Not only were they unwilling to let her pet their spiritual entities, they wouldn’t even let her look at them, saying it was to prevent stirring up her restless hands and heart, lest she commit some grave mistake.
To this, the great Queen Man Man responded with disdain, proudly presenting the world’s most beautiful, coquettish, adorable, and clingy little blue hognose snake!
But whether it was truly a hognose snake, Jiang Man wasn’t entirely sure.
She had once been lightly bitten by Wen Qing’s little sister’s snake and felt a bit dizzy and feverish at the time, but she recovered shortly after.
Moreover, whenever the little snake was in front of her, its eyes sparkled like obsidian, especially when Jiang Man praised it, they would shine even brighter.
Mildly venomous, cute, and clingy.
Jiang Man unilaterally declared that the little sister’s snake was the most adorable little hognose snake in the entire world!
After running a few laps around the track, her body gradually warmed up, and the heat from her wrist roused the “sleeping” little snake.
Noticing the little snake’s movement, Jiang Man stopped and lifted her wrist to check on its condition.
To this day, Jiang Man had no clear concept of what a spiritual entity was. Vaguely, she regarded them as little animals born alongside their owners, sharing the same lifespan.
Perhaps this was why she had never been able to awaken her own spiritual entity.
Jiang Man had never kept a pet. If she had to count, there were a few times she had gone hungry, saving her steamed buns for a pregnant little dog outside the courtyard wall.
But the little dog was much luckier than her. On the third day Jiang Man fed it, she discovered a photo in the little dog’s makeshift nest: the dog, heavily pregnant, lying on a sofa in its new home, snuggling with its owner.
It was only then that Jiang Man realized the little dog wasn’t unwanted after all.
The dog’s owner had even spent tens of thousands on a professional search team, investing considerable time and effort, never giving up on the little dog.
Jiang Man kept that photo for a long time so long that the little dog, whose lifespan was only a tenth of a human’s, had already passed on to the doggy afterlife. Yet Jiang Man still carefully treasured the photo.
Feeling the slight coolness at her fingertips, Jiang Man snapped back to reality and looked at the adorable little snake before her with a smile.
She raised her hand and lowered her head.
Gently rubbing her cheek against the snake’s head, Jiang Man couldn’t resist giving it a kiss and said, “Who’s the cutest little snake in the world? Is it you?”
Being kissed by the human it adored, the seemingly aloof little snake turned into a shy, sticky rice cake, flicking its tongue and letting out a few timid hisses.
Jiang Man didn’t find it frightening, only endearing. She couldn’t help but press her lips against the snake’s head a few more times.
In the dorm room, Wen Qing sat in a daze, her cheeks flushed red. She lifted her hand foolishly to touch her forehead, where the sensation of lips still lingered.
On her way back from her morning run, Jiang Man had picked up breakfast for her three roommates, each according to their preferences.
As she pushed the door open, Fang Jin and Mu Qian were still sprawled awkwardly in their beds, fast asleep. Wen Qing, however, was nowhere to be seen in the room.
After setting the breakfast on the table, Jiang Man called out Wen Qing’s name softly.
A response came from the bathroom, and after a moment, Wen Qing emerged with her hair damp and cool.
Seeing her wet hair and the cold droplets trickling down, Jiang Man was startled and instinctively reached out to touch her forehead.
But Wen Qing took a step back, avoiding Jiang Man’s outstretched hand.
Never having imagined that Wen Qing would one day evade her touch, Jiang Man’s hand hung awkwardly in the air, her expression freezing momentarily.
Wen Qing, realizing the abruptness of her action, instinctively tried to explain, “It’s not that My hair is too wet. I didn’t want to get your hand damp.”
Though it was clearly an excuse, Jiang Man calmly withdrew her hand and played along with a few casual remarks.
With Fang Jin and Mu Qian still asleep, the two stood by the bathroom door, one harboring hidden thoughts, the other suddenly feeling distanced staring at each other in an awkward silence.
Jiang Man had once heard that as people reach a certain age, friends inevitably drift apart, no matter how close or intimate they once were.
From babbling as toddlers to their youthful years, Jiang Man had mentally prepared herself for this stage. Yet when it truly arrived, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
Clenching her hands tightly behind her back, Jiang Man lifted her head and flashed a bright, radiant smile. “I bought breakfast. Make sure to wake Fang Jin and the others after you eat, alright? I’m all sweaty, so I’m going to take a shower too.”
Watching her retreating back uncharacteristically indifferent as she grabbed a towel and hurried into the bathroom Wen Qing felt her heart tighten.
The sound of running water echoed from the bathroom as Wen Qing gripped her towel tightly.
By the time Jiang Man finished her shower, Fang Jin and Mu Qian had been roused by Wen Qing and were sitting on the edge of their beds, mechanically swallowing their breakfast like listless spirits.
The weather was still warm, and a short while in the sun would dry their hair. But Wen Qing, the ever-proper student council president, and Jiang Man, the student representative scheduled to speak at the school’s opening ceremony, both opted to blow-dry their hair and tie it up.
Although No. 1 High School had many rules, most were academic in nature. The requirements for appearance were quite lenient as long as it didn’t affect studies, even if someone shaved their head or let their hair grow long enough to sweep the floor, the discipline teacher would only remind them to tidy up before strolling away, hands clasped behind their back.
The leaders’ speeches at the mobilization assembly were long-winded and tedious, lulling the audience into drowsiness. When it was Wen Qing’s turn to speak, she concisely outlined behavioral guidelines, briefly rousing some listeners to attention.
Until Jiang Man stepped onto the stage, speech notes in hand.
Standing on the elevated platform, she took in the drowsy students below, especially her friends who were slouching and leaning in all directions. Jiang Man couldn’t help but smile at the sight.
A soft chuckle escaped through the microphone, echoing across the hall and instantly rousing the sleepy crowd.
Seeing Jiang Man standing on stage, radiant and upright like a young pine tree under the bright sunlight, everyone instinctively wanted to cheer, but she raised a hand to quiet them.
Composing herself, Jiang Man lowered her gaze and read aloud the inspiring words written on her script phrases that were flowery and grand but ultimately empty.
Lifting her eyes, she met a sea of sparkling gazes and flashed a brilliant smile. “I hope your high school years become a treasure that never fades!”
Amid the cheers from below, someone, emboldened by the crowd, shouted loudly, “Manman, would you ever go out with me?”
The entire hall erupted in laughter at the remark.
Standing offstage, Wen Qing looked up at the girl who shone as brightly as the sun, inspiring others to chase after her.
With a bright and earnest yet playful smile, Jiang Man replied to the bold confession from the crowd, “No way! The school leaders and the dean are still here. Be careful, or President Wen might catch you and make you copy the school rules eight hundred times!”
What had begun as a solemn mobilization assembly ended with the students’ laughter.
As soon as she stepped off the stage, Jiang Man greeted Wen Qing before casually making her way to the back of Class A’s formation to join her group of friends.
Having caught up on sleep during the assembly, Fang Jin and Mu Qian were now somewhat alert.
As soon as Jiang Man returned, Mu Qian pulled out her tablet to show off the candid photos she’d taken of “Speaker Manman,” earning enthusiastic approval from the star of the shots.
In contrast, Fang Jin, with her gossipy nature, was like a dark chocolate with a hint of soy sauce, slightly salty.
Leaning in close to Jiang Man’s ear, she whispered, “The one who confessed earlier seems to be in our grade! Manman, don’t you always say you want to get into a relationship?”
On stage, Wen Qing was delivering the closing remarks, while Jiang Man and her friends huddled below, chatting in low voices.
“That would be puppy love!” Jiang Man shot a glare at the fickle blonde, who’d never been short of romantic interests since her differentiation. “We’re only in our second year of high school, how could we start dating so early?”
Even though Jiang Man was the most eager among the four of them to fall in love and had signed up for countless Perfect Alpha, Beta, Omega classes in pursuit of romance, she firmly opposed the idea of early relationships.
Fang Jin rubbed her nose and muttered under her breath, criticizing Jiang Man’s old-fashioned attitude. “But Chairman Jiang and Aunt Liu Ying were childhood sweethearts who fell for each other in high school, weren’t they?”
Unswayed by Fang Jin’s persuasion, Jiang Man retorted, “But my moms didn’t officially start dating until college!”
Crossing her arms, Jiang Man sighed helplessly and slumped her shoulders. “Besides, I haven’t even differentiated yet. Who knows if I might not even end up as a beta but end up with glandular defects?
What if my partner is an omega and I can’t soothe them during their heat? That would just mean suffering for both of us.”
Jiang Man was no longer the clueless youngster who had just arrived, unfamiliar with everything.
Over the years, she had diligently studied the physiology lessons taught at school and witnessed her own mother’s rut and her other mother’s heat.
Thinking of this, Jiang Man let out a long sigh and recalled what she had overheard in the warehouse the previous night. “Jinjin, how do you think alphas and omegas of the same secondary gender fall in love with each other?”
Firmly an AO-ist, Fang Jin wrinkled her face upon hearing this and pondered for a long while, still unable to grasp how same-sex individuals could fall in love.
Scratching her cheek, Fang Jin said with a furrowed brow, “With sheer affection?”
That statement made no difference at all.
When Wen Qing arrived, the three of them were huddled together, whispering.
Seeing Jiang Man roll her eyes at Fang Jin, Wen Qing paused in her steps.
It seemed Manman hadn’t taken the morning incident to heart.
