- Chapter 20 - The Villain and Despair
In the reception room of Jiang Feng’s company, Wen Yu sat alone on the sofa.
As soon as she entered, Jiang Feng instinctively looked around for the other beautiful, green-haired little one.
“She didn’t come,” Wen Yu said, her voice tinged with a hint of amusement, her mood inexplicably cheerful. “Today, it’s just me.”
Although Liu Ying and Xu Nuo had once been close friends, Jiang Feng knew very little about Xu Nuo’s lover.
In the few times they had met, Wen Yu had always appeared like a mentally unstable patient. On the rare occasions when she seemed calm, Xu Nuo was always by her side.
Jiang Feng stepped into the reception room, then retreated a few steps to glance at the clean, bright windows of the secretarial office, confirming that the sun had indeed risen in the east and set in the west as usual.
Though somewhat incredulous, out of politeness, Jiang Feng still wore the courteous smile she reserved for guests.
Assistant Wang, following the instructions of the chief assistant, brought two cups of light tea for the two bosses.
The tea was fragrant and subtle, with a lingering sweetness, steam curling gently upward.
Jiang Feng took a small sip and got straight to the point: “If you’re here today to find a way for the two little ones to meet, then I’m afraid you’ll have to leave. Yingying made it very clear before I left, I only listen to her. So, as for letting them meet.”
“No,” the woman sitting across from her, usually cold and gloomy, interrupted Jiang Feng.
Her snake-like eyes were now filled with malice and disgust. “I’m here to ask you to do everything in your power to prevent her from seeing Manzai.”
What?
Jiang Feng thought she must have misheard and looked at Wen Yu in confusion. “Prevent Qing Qing from seeing Manzai?”
Jiang Feng stared at Wen Yu, puzzled. Anyone hearing this would think Wen Yu was the villain trying to tear the lovers apart!
Wen Yu nodded.
With her hands clasped and resting on her crossed legs, she looked exactly like the antagonists in the TV dramas Jiang Feng watched with her wife.
“If possible, make sure she never finds Manzai again.”
“She will bring harm and misfortune to Manzai.”
Well, wasn’t that the classic line of a villain her wife often mentioned? With those words, Wen Yu seemed even more like a villain.
Jiang Feng silently picked up her teacup and took small sips. Though her mind was filled with complaints, she nodded seriously and agreed to Wen Yu’s request.
Still, Jiang Feng couldn’t help but wonder.
Why did Wen Yu seem to despise Wen Qing so much? After all, didn’t she carry the blood of the person Wen Yu loved?
For Chairman Jiang, who had grown up in a united, sunny, loving, and healthy family and had a smooth, childhood sweetheart relationship with her wife, the idea of hating a child who shared a bloodline with her and her lover was utterly baffling.
Although she and her own little one sometimes clashed the two of them combined didn’t act a day over three Jiang Feng loved her deeply.
Just like when she heard Wen Yu say that Wen Qing would bring disaster to Manzai, Jiang Feng’s expression remained neutral, but her heart skipped a beat.
Though she didn’t fully trust the words of someone as mentally unstable as Wen Yu, Jiang Feng still took the warning to heart.
If Wen Qing really would bring trouble to Manzai.
Jiang Feng lifted her gaze and looked at the woman who had long been a frequent topic of her wife’s midnight rants.
How many times had Liu Ying woken her in the middle of the night, gathering the old mansion’s bodyguards to rush to that hillside villa to rescue Xu Nuo?
At that time, both Liu Ying and she had thought that Xu Nuo and Wen Yu were reaching the end of their relationship.
Who would have thought?
Looking at Wen Yu, who had already reined in her emotions, Jiang Feng silently sipped her tea.
Over the years, with Xu Nuo’s unwavering companionship, Wen Yu seemed much more composed than she had been in earlier times.
Those from the main and branch families of the Wen clan who had once been particularly restless had also fallen silent in recent years.
Jiang Feng had heard some of the Wen family’s secrets.
Every single one of their ancestors had engaged in outrageous, inhumane, and unethical acts.
If Jiang Feng were to summarize, she’d say they were a bunch of mentally deranged, utterly abnormal lunatics. What they needed most right now was to check into a psychiatric hospital for proper treatment.
But psychiatric treatment alone was far from enough. Those insane, chaotic traits were already etched into the DNA sequence of the Wen family.
Neither of them was particularly talkative outside of discussing their wives, so their conversation circled back and forth, either about Manzai or Manzai again.
But Manzai, a little one almost a year old, only had so much to talk about. Within half an hour, they had exhausted all topics and sat silently drinking their tea.
Assistant Wang, listening to the chief assistant’s remote instructions through her earpiece, noticed that the two were about to finish their tea. She hastily spoke up to Jiang Feng, “Chairman Jiang, it’s almost time for Manzai to wake up. Sister Liu Ying specifically reminded us this morning that you should take Manzai to a crowded place for a stroll this afternoon.”
Jiang Feng gracefully stood up, and Wen Yu followed suit.
Just as Jiang Feng extended her hand and was about to utter a polite farewell, she heard Wen Yu’s voice, tinged with a hint of amusement, ask, “Manzai’s awake? Forgive my intrusion, but may I go see her?”
The words of farewell caught in her throat, and Jiang Feng subtly withdrew her hand, plastering on a standard, polite smile. “Of course, President Wen, please follow me.”
The two left the reception room one after the other, leaving Assistant Wang standing there in a fluster, clutching her communicator in confusion.
After a moment, she snapped back to reality and quickly sent a message to the chief assistant: Chief Assistant! Good news Chairman Jiang and President Wen have left the reception room. Bad news, President Wen said she wants to see Manzai. Hurry up and wake Manzai, ahhhhh!
In the office, the chief assistant received Assistant Wang’s message and stared at the peacefully sleeping child in the cradle, her face ashen.
She was already doing her best to maintain a professional, stern expression during work hours, as per the boss’s request, which was hardly endearing to a young child.
Now, to play the villain and disturb the child’s sweet dreams.
The chief assistant looked utterly defeated.
From the reception room to the office, it would take at most ten minutes. Time was of the essence.
After pacing anxiously beside the cradle for a while, the chief assistant steeled herself, reached out, and gently lifted the sleeping child, rocking her softly.
Jiang Man was dreaming of becoming an invincible superstar, basking in the spotlight and feeling proud, just about to deliver her acceptance speech for winning the “World’s Most Adorable Child” award, when she was groggily awakened.
The little one had no temper upon waking; she simply rubbed her sleepy eyes drowsily, yawned, and looked confusedly at the adult holding her.
Before the chief assistant could explain her actions, the office door was pushed open.
Jiang Feng, seeing the dazed child in the chief assistant’s arms, hurried over and pinched the chubby cheeks of the little one to help her wake up faster.
Jiang Man hadn’t been angry about being woken up, but having her chubby cheeks pinched hard by her mean mommy? Now she was genuinely upset, woof!
When Wen Yu approached, the first thing she saw was the little one puffing out her cheeks, eyes wide and round, looking fierce and ready to argue with her mother.
Noticing Wen Yu’s presence, Jiang Feng reached out and pulled the child into her arms. “Sorry about this,” she said. “Manzai gets a bit of a temper when she first wakes up.”
Hmph!
Not only had her bad mother pinched her, but she was also slandering her innocence!
With her short, chubby arms, Jiang Man angrily defied her elder, grabbing the cheek of the mother who was spreading rumors about her, all while babbling about how mean her mother was.
This was the first time Wen Yu had heard Manzai speak, and she couldn’t hide her surprise. “Manzai can already talk?”
Jiang Feng, wrestling with the little one, freed one hand to respond politely, though her words were slightly muffled. “She’s just starting to babble a bit.”
Hearing the familiar voice of her auntie, the little one, who had been so fierce just moments before, instantly calmed down. Her big, round eyes blinked as she looked at Wen Yu, mirroring her mother’s earlier reaction as she searched for that pretty little child.
Jiang Man glanced around but couldn’t spot Wen Qing anywhere. She looked up at Wen Yu, puzzled. “Huh? Sis?”
The child’s confused expression was utterly adorable, and Wen Yu instinctively softened, though her warmth felt a bit unfamiliar. “She went to the amusement park with her assistant and didn’t come along.”
The little one seemed to understand, nodding thoughtfully. Even though she hadn’t seen the sister she’d been longing for, seeing her sister’s mother was just as good. Jiang Man didn’t hold back, flashing a sweet smile at the auntie who, despite her cold appearance, was actually very gentle with children.
Now that she’d seen the child, Wen Yu’s lunch break was nearly over. Before her quietly waiting assistant could speak up, Wen Yu took the initiative to say her goodbyes and leave.
After she left, Jiang Feng held Jiang Man, the two of them staring at each other, wide-eyed.
Jiang Man was fully awake now, and there was no chance of her going back to sleep. Just as Wen Yu had to return to work, Jiang Feng also needed to start her own tasks.
The assistant, who had been pretending to be invisible, now sprang into action, eagerly raising her right hand. “Boss, I’ve finished all my main duties for the day. The rest can be handled by the secretarial office. I can take care of Manzai full-time this afternoon!”
Jiang Feng hesitated, but the assistant’s burning gaze, fixed on the chubby child in her arms, made her relent. She handed the little one over with some uncertainty.
“Then I’ll trouble you with her,” Jiang Feng said, unable to hide her concern. “Don’t go looking for the trainees. Even though it might give her some exposure, it’ll disrupt their progress.”
“If it’s convenient, take her to the mall near the company this afternoon. I recall the Wen family’s company is nearby too, right?”
Finally holding the child she’d been dreaming of, the assistant suppressed her excitement and nodded. “Yes. President Wen’s company isn’t too far from ours.”
Though it wasn’t far, it was still about a half-hour drive. So, these two little ones probably wouldn’t run into each other, right?
Jiang Feng rested her chin on her hand, thinking it over. After a moment, she looked up and added, “If you see anyone with a camera crew, turn around and leave immediately. Make sure you don’t bump into Qingzai from the Wen family.”
Unbeknownst to Jiang Feng, the assistant had already slung a pre-packed diaper bag over her shoulder. Hearing the reminder, she responded with firm determination.
Later on…
The cautious chief assistant, who had been careful every step of the way, held the excited toddler in his arms as they stood before the indoor playground teeming with the most children in the mall. Across from them stood Wen Yu’s assistant, also holding a young child.
The two assistants exchanged a glance, then closed their eyes in despair.
