- Chapter 11 - Winning Over Jiang Man
“Pfft—ah!”
Sister!
Jiang Man had been holding Wen Qing’s hand for a long time, teaching her to call her “sister.”
But the clever little girl seemed to have skipped unlocking the “addressing” skill. Jiang Man had taught until her mouth went dry, yet Wen Qing still only uttered “Manman,” a far cry from the “sister” Jiang Man had painstakingly taught.
Jiang Man felt exhausted and deflated.
The little one curled into a ball, clutching her fluffy head as she pondered: Why, why won’t her little sister call her “sister”?
Nearby, the producer watched with eager eyes, itching to call the camera crew over and capture every moment of the adorable pair.
Every move the little ones made was unbearably cute!
With the contract signed, Jiang Man officially became part of the program crew. Over the past few days, she and Wen Qing had watched the bustling household staff pack and tidy the house.
To facilitate filming and post-production editing, on the producer’s suggestion, Madam Liu Ying made the decision to move from the manor to a spacious penthouse in the city center.
Coincidentally, it happened to be right across from Xu Nuo’s home.
On the first day of the move, the program crew also resumed filming with a surprise broadcast. Liu Ying, holding her own child and Xu Nuo’s, knocked on the door of Xu Nuo’s home.
A moment later, the door opened from the inside, but before it could even crack open, the ever-helpful Jiang Feng swiftly blocked it with lightning speed.
With a sharp thud, the door across the hall slammed shut and was locked in one fluid motion.
Wen Yu, her expression icy, held a child in each arm. Her upturned eyes were filled with palpable confusion.
Xu Nuo, who had been lounging in the bedroom, grew puzzled when her wife didn’t return after a while. She got up, slipped on her cotton slippers, and shuffled out to the living room.
There, she saw her usually stern and taciturn wife frozen like a statue at the doorway.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Nuo asked, unable to see the two children in her wife’s arms from her angle. Curious, she walked closer and gasped in surprise. “Manzai? Xiao Qing? What are they doing here?”
Hearing her wife’s voice, Wen Yu snapped out of her daze.
The two chubby toddlers in her arms, dressed in matching outfits of different colors, were holding hands. They weren’t her own child, who was currently chewing on her hand and staring up at her with wide-eyed curiosity.
Is this Wen Qing’s mother?
Jiang Man, like an inquisitive little explorer, blinked and studied Wen Yu intently.
Although she had overheard the mothers’ conversations and learned that Wen Qing’s mother was an alpha, Wen Yu was nothing like the childish Jiang Feng. Wen Qing’s mother seemed cold and distant.
She reminded Jiang Man of the strict principal from her kindergarten, and she couldn’t help feeling a little intimidated.
Across from her, sensing Jiang Man’s fear, Wen Qing frowned unhappily and looked up at her mother.
Neither mother nor daughter had a gentle temperament, and neither was willing to back down. A silent standoff ensued.
Just as an invisible tension was about to ignite between the two, two peacemakers stepped in, breaking their stare-down.
Xu Nuo reached out and took Wen Qing into her arms. Glancing at the dazed Manzai in her wife’s embrace, she casually asked, “Close the door and come in. Where’s Liu Ying? Oh, and I just heard a loud slam from across the hall did someone move in there?”
Stiffly holding Jiang Man, Wen Yu followed her wife like a robotic shadow, obeying her instructions one by one. Her reply, however, was as concise as ever: “She left. That’s her place across the hall.”
“What?”
Xu Nuo halted in her tracks, turning around in shock while holding her daughter. “How could she possibly know we own property here?”
“Dammit, she must have investigated us again!”
Even when angry, his wife looked adorable.
Jiang Man keenly sensed that the cold auntie holding her had softened considerably.
“Should we send them back then?” Wen Yu walked over to her bristling wife and thoughtfully offered suggestions. “If they won’t open the door, I can have the bodyguards come up and break it down. Or we could have them rappel from the roof and lower Wen Qing and the others onto her balcony. And also—”
Before she could finish, Xu Nuo covered her mouth.
After all these years, perhaps due to her upbringing, Wen Yu still couldn’t shake off that straightforward, brute-force mindset.
After getting her head lightly tapped twice by his wife, Wen Yu obediently fell silent.
The child in her arms couldn’t help but widen her eyes:
The mother of her little sister was seriously hardcore! Auntie Xu Nuo was amazing too, managing to “subdue” the “ultra-hardcore” auntie in one move!
Jiang Man silently applauded Auntie Xu Nuo in her heart for instantly taming the auntie who operated on the edge of the law.
The surprise live broadcast of “Baby’s Observation Diary” was so sudden that by the time Jiang Man and Wen Qing had finished sharing a bottle of milk, many people were just receiving the delayed promotion notifications.
[I heard Manzai is a permanent resident now, is that true?]
[Manzai say goodbye to your godmother! Mommy brought your favorite glittery little sack!]
[Wait (screeching to a halt with sack in hand) what’s going on here? Why is Manzai at Qingzai’s house?]
[Are they already arranged in marriage? (just kidding)]
Every corner of the room was equipped with cameras by the production team, capable of capturing the babies’ every move from all angles without any blind spots.
Jiang Man, full and satisfied, let out a burp. Full and sleepy, her almond-shaped eyes grew dazed, and without even clearly seeing who was approaching, she reached out her arms asking to be held.
It had become Jiang Man’s habit to be held by her mother after feeding and have her back patted for burps while resting on her shoulder.
Under the camera, the audience watched Wen Yu’s stern, unapproachable expression and couldn’t help but hold their breath.
Objectively speaking, anyone would find it hard to refuse such an adorable child like Manzai.
But if that person was Wen Yu.
[Isn’t President Wen famously known for disliking children? She wouldn’t reject our Manzai, would she…]
[Don’t, don’t reject our Manzai, though I also think President Wen might just coldly walk past (sobbing)]
As the live chat lamented, in the room, Wen Yu stared coldly and silently at the chubby-armed child reaching out for a hug.
The little one’s upturned face was plump and rosy, her eyes so drowsy they could barely stay open.
She did seem much cuter than the one at home who had caused his wife so much trouble.
After a long moment, the child’s arms were getting sore from reaching out, and just as her eyes were about to flutter open, to the audience’s nail-biting suspense, Wen Yu bent down she bent down and picked up the child!
When Xu Nuo entered with two warm towels, the first thing she saw was her child-hating wife stiffly holding the chubby baby and patting her back for burps.
Unable to suppress a smile, Xu Nuo quietly approached, helped adjust her posture, and softly instructed by her ear, “Pat here.”
Wen Yu’s movements froze, the tips of her fair ears instantly flushing bright red.
Noticing his wife’s shyness again, Xu Nuo tactfully didn’t point it out. Instead, he picked up the other child from the small bed, holding them as a demonstration.
Compared to their somewhat aloof daughter, what truly troubled Xu Nuo the most was the relationship between his daughter and his wife.
Though bound by blood, whenever this mother and daughter encountered each other, one regarded the other as the murderer of her spouse, while the other saw her as the killer of her mother.
They didn’t resemble a mother and daughter connected by blood; instead, they acted like sworn enemies with a deep-seated grudge.
Watching his wife gradually grow more adept at patting Manzai to sleep, Xu Nuo couldn’t help but glance at her.
Wen Yu’s perpetually gloomy and stern face seemed to carry a hint of softness at that moment.
Seizing the opportunity, Xu Nuo leaned in and asked, “Manzai is already asleep. You can gently put her down on the small bed. Would you like to hold Xiao Qing for a while?”
At the mention of Wen Qing’s name, the slight tenderness on Wen Yu’s face receded like a tide, leaving only icy coldness in its wake.
She disliked Wen Qing openly and unabashedly.
Wen Yu couldn’t accept a child who had once been nurtured inside her wife’s body for a month.
Even if this child carried the blood of the wife she loved most.
Regardless of whether Wen Qing was an alpha or even an omega, Wen Yu’s aversion remained unchanged.
Unless, of course, the child bore the same face and gender as her wife.
Seeing his wife’s expression darken instantly, Xu Nuo sighed helplessly.
Forcing things never yielded sweet results, and he knew that some matters couldn’t be resolved overnight.
Guiding Wen Yu to gently lay Manzai down, Xu Nuo looked thoughtfully at Qingzai, whose eyes were wide with alertness. After a moment’s consideration, he placed her beside Manzai.
Wen Qing was like a little magnet, the moment Xu Nuo set her down, she immediately snuggled up to Jiang Man.
Fortunately, having slept together these past few days, Jiang Man had grown accustomed to her movements. She showed no signs of waking as Wen Qing clung to her tightly, closing her eyes contentedly.
As Xu Nuo led Wen Yu away, the long-silent bullet comments finally began to scroll:
[So, the rumor that President Wen doesn’t like Qingzai isn’t just a rumor, it’s true?]
[Replying to the above: Is it really that surprising? After all, when President Wen was pursuing Xu Nuo back then well, let’s just say she was pretty insane.]
[Seriously, like a rabid dog. Imprisonment, coercion. When Liu Ying and Jiang Feng barged in with the security bureau, they said Xu Nuo’s eyes were blindfolded, and his wrists and ankles were chained.]
[Didn’t Liu Ying and Xu Nuo fall out because of this? If you search now, you might still find traces of their three-year long-distance relationship.]
These old stories, scrubbed clean by the advanced internet, could no longer be found in their original reports.
But from the scattered clues and overlooked news fragments, one could still catch a glimpse of Wen Yu’s madness back then.
After a long while, a bullet comment slowly scrolled across the empty screen: [Yikes, protective disclaimer: I’m not trying to stir up conflict. But with President Wen’s personality could Qingzai have inherited it?]
[Don’t even say it, but you’re not wrong.]
The bullet comments fell into silence, not a single word uttered.
A long time passed before rebuttals slowly began to appear.
Both sides held their own arguments, but none of it affected the two little ones sleeping soundly, tightly embracing each other on the bed.
Waking from her dreams, Jiang Man’s head was still a bit fuzzy.
Sitting up and looking around at the unfamiliar surroundings, it took her a while to remember that she was now at Wen Qing’s home.
Next to her, Wen Qing was still asleep, the door to the nursery tightly shut. Rubbing her rumbling tummy, Jiang Man obediently sat to the side, playing with her feet in a spot where she wouldn’t disturb the little one’s rest.
She nibbled on her hands and gnawed on her legs.
Jiang Man lifted her head several times to glance at the door, but no one came in.
The little one’s cheeks drooped, her small face scrunching up: Was no one really going to check if she was hungry? Manzai was about to cry from hunger!
Starving, Jiang Man rubbed her belly and looked up to see an unopened pack of teething biscuits on a small table nearby.
It must have been left there by Aunt Xu Nuo, ready for them to eat after they woke up.
Jiang Man felt her guess was absolutely right.
But she was already awake.
Jiang Man glanced at the sleeping Wen Qing, then lowered her head and rubbed her growling tummy again.
After a moment, the little one moved.
She rolled over and crawled to the edge of the bed, stretching her chubby hand through the gaps in the railing toward the teething biscuits on the table.
Almost there, just a little more!
Jiang Man’s plump cheeks pressed against the railing, her baby fat squishing out.
Her short, chubby hands flailed in the air, but each time, she fell just short.
After a long while, Jiang Man gave up.
Her cheeks were red from being pressed against the railing, but she hadn’t even touched the edge of the biscuit packet.
Her uncooperative stomach continued to rumble, and Jiang Man couldn’t help but feel a bit dejected.
“Mmm?” What are you doing?
A sudden voice from behind startled Jiang Man.
Caught clearly on camera, the chubby little one jumped in place, looking dazed and silly.
Though startled, Jiang Man wasn’t truly a baby, so she quickly snapped out of it and greeted Wen Qing, who had either just woken up or been disturbed by her.
Rubbing cheeks together was the most intimate way for little ones to interact.
Wen Qing loved rubbing cheeks with Jiang Man, and sometimes Jiang Man wondered: Does her little sister have a skin hunger disorder?
But later, after observing Wen Qing with others, Jiang Man successfully dismissed that concern.
The two little ones rubbed cheeks for a long time before a sound finally came from the door.
Wen Yu entered carrying two bowls of rice porridge. Jiang Man’s clever little nose immediately caught the scent, and she eagerly crawled a few steps toward her.
But Wen Qing grabbed her ankle, and Jiang Man quickly stopped, hesitantly looking at Wen Yu.
The discord between the Wen mother and daughter had already become a well-known “rumor” during that morning’s livestream.
Surprisingly, though, Wen Yu, who didn’t seem to like Wen Qing, appeared to have a soft spot for the sunny Jiang Man.
Earlier, when Wen Yu left the nursery and cuddled with Xu Nuo on the living room sofa watching TV, Xu Nuo jokingly suggested swapping babies with Liu Ying. Wen Yu actually considered it seriously before nodding in agreement.
Not only was Xu Nuo shocked, but the live chat was equally stunned.
