“Why?! No way!”
“Production team, give us back our cool-faced little tough guy! Give us back our little snake Qing!”
In no time, the outcry beneath the production team’s social media posts grew increasingly intense, with even competing shows jumping in to stir up conspiracy theories.
The popularity of “Baby Observation Diary” had become too enviable.
Though it wasn’t the first baby observation show on the market, the producer held absolute authority from the start. From the very beginning, the producer insisted on focusing the camera entirely on the babies themselves, rather than on the dramatic conflicts among adults, a stark contrast to other shows that used babies as a pretext to lure viewers into watching adults squabble.
After “Baby Observation Diary” became a hit, a slew of baby-themed variety shows sprouted like mushrooms after rain. Unable to claim the lion’s share, they trailed behind “Baby Observation Diary” to scavenge for scraps.
Now, with the most popular guest exiting and the show announcing a temporary hiatus, how could competing programs resist the urge to pounce? If they didn’t seize this chance to tear a chunk of flesh from “Baby Observation Diary,” would they have to settle for crumbs and broth once it resumed broadcasting?
All at once, every rival show lunged like starving wolves catching the scent of meat.
The show’s social media manager, watching the comments section spiral into absurdity, felt her hair falling out faster than it could grow. She rushed to the producer overnight, laptop in hand, to discuss damage control.
The show was the producer’s last-ditch effort, and seeing her hard work unravel like this weighed heavily on her. Ever since Xu Nuo took leave to go home and see her wife, she had been completely unreachable. It didn’t take a genius to guess why the producer figured it out in 0.01 seconds.
The manager, aged several years by the fury stirred up in the comments by rival shows’ trolls, asked wearily, “Producer, are we still unable to reach Ms. Xu?”
As the call disconnected automatically once again, the producer glanced at the latest message from Wen Yu, slumped down beside the manager, and downed a whole bottle of baijiu. “It’s all my fault. I was so focused on ratings that I forgot about Xu Nuo’s wife, that big vinegar jar.”
“There was a time when she even saw Jiang Feng and Liu Ying as her love rivals! Now, seeing the children of her ‘rivals’ shipping those ‘rivals’ with her own wife, how could she not be jealous?”
“Let me tell you, back in our college days.”
The manager was forced to listen to a lengthy tale of the tangled relationships between Xu Nuo and Wen Yu, and Jiang Feng and Liu Ying. She couldn’t help but feel that being a screenwriter would require growing an extra brain.
As the producer rambled on, reminiscing about one pair’s natural childhood friends-to-lovers story and another’s love-at-first-sight, domineering love saga, the manager scratched her ear and cut her off, summarizing, “So, this mess we’re in now is entirely your doing.””
“I didn’t mean to.”
Seeing the manager’s face darken further, the producer finally had a moment of clarity. She jumped up, grabbed her car keys, and bolted. “I’ll go! I’ll go camp outside Xu Nuo’s door right now! Tomorrow night at the latest, I’ll have good news for you by then!”
When guilty, people run faster than Olympic champions.
“Baby Observation Diary” wasn’t the work of one person, but of a team.
The producer crouched outside Xu Nuo’s door, waiting from day to night without leaving for even a moment. Finally, at noon the next day, she caught sight of Xu Nuo, who appeared “battered and bruised” with flushed cheeks.
Seeing the producer arrive, Xu Nuo tugged at the collar wrapped around her neck and gestured for the producer to sit down.
Upon hearing the producer’s request, Xu Nuo looked troubled. “You know very well that Wen Yu doesn’t influence my decisions.”
“The problem now is that Qingzai only recognizes Manzai. Without Manzai.”
“Achoo!”
Just as Jiang Man was eating her baby food, she sneezed without warning.
The tiny noodle piece she had painstakingly managed to scoop up with her spoon after a long struggle with her uncooperative hands plopped right back down mid-air.
The little one, who had been wrestling with her hands all morning and was just about to taste her first bite of lunch, froze in disbelief.
A toddler’s emotions are beyond rational control. Even though this chubby little body housed the soul of an eighteen-year-old girl, at the sight of her hard-earned meal disappearing, her eyes involunt welled up.
“Wah…”
Tears instantly pooled in Jiang Man’s round eyes. Her tiny nose twitched, and with just one blink, the tears threatened to spill over like a broken dam.
But before her “golden pearls” could fall, a soft silicone spoon holding a piece of noodle was gently offered beside her.
Jiang Man instinctively sniffled and followed the spoon’s direction. It was her younger “sister,” Wen Qing, who was a month younger, trying to comfort her.
No, no, no!
The moment she saw Wen Qing, Jiang Man suddenly remembered her role as the older sister, the big sister.
A big sister should set an example for her little sister. How could she cry over such a small setback!
Using her sleeve to wipe away the tears in her eyes, Jiang Man flashed a bright smile at the little one clumsily trying to cheer her up, then lowered her head to continue her battle of wits with the slippery noodles in her bowl.
Wen Qing wasn’t the least bit upset by the rejection.
If Jiang Man had easily accepted the noodle she offered, that would have been wonderful. But even if she didn’t, Wen Qing wasn’t discouraged.
After all, Jiang Man had always been like this stubbornly wanting to try everything on her own.
Quietly scooping up noodles from her own bowl and eating, Wen Qing watched as Jiang Man focused intently on her struggle with the elusive noodle piece.
Finally, just as Wen Qing was nearly finished with her meal, Jiang Man managed to shakily lift a noodle piece on her spoon.
This time, she was prepared. Before even raising her hand, she opened her mouth wide, ready to welcome the noodle.
When the producer was brought in by the nanny, Jiang Man was confidently gearing up for her second attempt at conquering the noodles.
Hearing the nanny’s voice, the little one instinctively looked up.
Her dazed expression, paired with her food-smeared face and adorable bib, made the producer’s eyes light up instantly. She immediately pulled out a contract from her bag and handed it to Liu Ying.
“Liu Ying, for the sake of our college friendship, being roommates and colleagues, please let Manzai bring you along as a permanent guest on the show!”
The producer’s eyes burned with intensity as she grasped Liu Ying’s hands, her gaze filled with pleading.
But before Liu Ying could respond, Chairman Jiang, who felt she had inexplicably been “crowned with a green hat,” couldn’t hold back her opinion. “I refuse! I won’t allow it!”
Jiang Man watched her mother, who was rumored to be cold and ruthless outside pout and cling tightly to her beautiful mom, looking like a wronged, oversized puppy.
“A few days ago when Yingying went out, I ended up with a ‘green hat’ on my head. If Yingying goes out again for a few more days, are you planning to have her kick me to the curb?!”
“I don’t care, I won’t allow it anyway!”
Jiang Feng’s genuine distress poured out as tears streamed down, soaking Liu Ying’s neck.
Liu Ying didn’t think she was being unreasonable or dramatic; she could tell Jiang Feng was truly hurt and upset.
Seeing Liu Ying about to speak, the producer instinctively sensed she was going to say something he didn’t want to hear and quickly cut in: “I’ll change it! I’ll revise the program schedule!”
As he spoke, he handed them the hastily modified recording schedule he had worked on in the car: “I’ve been thinking the little ones are still so young and really need family companionship. Keeping them cooped up in that small observation room just isn’t right.”
“So!” The producer’s eyes shone brightly as he patted the freshly drafted, albeit hastily scribbled, proposal. “I plan to change the recording arrangement!”
“From now on, we’ll use each family unit as a live broadcast window to show the audience a day in the life of the little ones!”
Jiang Man, the little one who was about to be showcased, looked up dazedly from her bowl upon hearing the producer auntie’s words.
Watching the producer auntie’s eyes gleam as she whispered mysteriously to her childish, petty, and unreasonable alpha mother, Jiang Man saw her mother’s face light up with joy. Her pout vanished, and with a grand wave, she declared she would invest in the producer auntie.
Not only did she increase the investment, but the little one, who couldn’t even write yet, was grabbed and ruthlessly made to press her tiny red paw print onto the black-and-white printed contract.
Although Jiang Man couldn’t read, she could count!
Staring at the number following her paw print, Jiang Man swallowed the noodle in her mouth and squinted as she counted.
Ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten million!
Oh my!
Good heavens!
Having been poor all her life, this was the first time Jiang Man had ever seen so much money. She swallowed nervously, her gaze toward the producer now filled with eagerness.
Nearby, her jealous and petty little sister noticed this and immediately grew unhappy, seeking attention.
Hearing Wen Qing’s dissatisfied “pfft,” the producer suddenly remembered the original purpose of this visit.
Hurriedly rummaging through her bag, she pulled out another contract already signed by Xu Nuo and Wen Yu, and asked the ruthless Chairwoman Jiang to press Wen Qing’s little paw onto it as a seal.
Jiang Man glanced at the compensation for the pretty little sister and couldn’t help gasping in shock.
Sure enough,
there’s always someone better, and among little ones, there’s always a more impressive one.
Just when she thought her own money was already plenty, the pretty little sister’s compensation turned out to be three times hers!
Three times!!!
Noticing Jiang Man’s envious gaze, the little one, who had been frowning and wiping the red ink from her palm, stopped and turned to meet her eyes.
“Pfft, pfft.” For you.
“Huh?” What?
Jiang Man scratched her ear in surprise, thinking she must be hallucinating.
She must have been too excited about the ten million compensations otherwise, how could she have heard the pretty little sister speak?
Seeing her reaction, the pretty little one blinked. “Pfft wah, pfft pfft.” You heard right, it’s all for you.
This time, Jiang Man heard it clearly and was so startled she shook her head and turned back, eyes wide as she stared at Wen Qing.
In those watery, round eyes, only her own reflection appeared. The previously jealous and unhappy little one suddenly brightened up.
“Pfft wah pfft, pfft ee hoo man pfft.” I’ll earn money, all for Manman to spend.
For so long, this was the first time Jiang Man had encountered someone with whom she could communicate so effortlessly.
After standing there dazed for a long while, she finally snapped back to reality. Seeing the pretty girl’s plump yet lovely face, it suddenly dawned on her:
Had the girl not called her “sister” even once just now?
How could that be!
The self-proclaimed ultimate big sister, Fullness Queen, widened her eyes in disbelief!
