- Chapter 24 - Hidden Undercurrents and Hami’s Departure
Qin Xin had been in a very bad mood lately.
Only one or two things could make her feel this way, and the most significant one was naturally Yu Linfei’s refusal to marry her.
In fact, Qin Xin never understood why Yu Linfei would reject a marriage with her. Although she knew he had some unclear relationships with certain men, she also knew it was practically impossible for someone of his status to be openly with a man.
First of all, his father would never allow it. How could that old-fashioned, serious man tolerate a gay son? Secondly, if Yu Linfei really came out, his public image would be completely ruined, not to mention his future career. Although Qin Xin could be a bit airheaded sometimes, she wasn’t stupid. She clearly understood that Yu Linfei needed someone to be his girlfriend in the eyes of the public, and she was currently the best choice for that role.
Qin Xin’s family background wasn’t as high as Yu Linfei’s, but it was certainly not bad. She was also pretty enough that Yu Linfei could take her to public events without losing face.
So why was Yu Linfei so unwilling? Qin Xin bit her red lips and tore a rose into pieces, thinking for a long time without finding an answer.
At first, she wondered if Yu Linfei was too focused on his male partners to notice her. But before she could prove that theory, she heard the news that Yu Linfei and Meng Baiqing had broken up. Hearing this made her happy, but her joy quickly turned to disappointment when she realized Yu Linfei still had zero interest in her. He even sent Fengyu Teng to the party in England instead of going himself.
Did Yu Linfei not like her at all? This thought made Qin Xin panic. Deep down, she didn’t quite understand why she cared so much about him, but this man she cared for had been completely cold to her from start to finish.
Yu Linfei was someone who didn’t like to show his emotions, whether he liked someone or hated them. Usually, he just wore a calm smile; the only difference was the slight curve of his lips. Yet, a person like him showed unusual impatience whenever he dealt with Qin Xin.
Qin Xin thought for a long time but couldn’t understand why Yu Linfei disliked her so much. It made sense that she didn’t understand, because deep down, the person Yu Linfei disliked wasn’t actually Qin Xin.
To Yu Linfei, it didn’t matter if this woman was a typical airhead or a genius. In his eyes, Qin Xin’s existence was just like a random person on the street.
Would you get angry just by seeing a random stranger? Would you feel depressed just by talking to one? No—of course not. But if that stranger was backed by someone trying to control you, someone you couldn’t openly fight with your attitude toward that stranger probably wouldn’t be very friendly.
That’s right; the person Yu Linfei actually disliked wasn’t Qin Xin, but his father, Yu Pingyu, who supported her and tried to interfere in Yu Linfei’s career and life.
This man was nearly 50 years old and had a very controlling personality. Since Yu Linfei was a child, his father had been working abroad and rarely spent time with his only son.
Because of this, the relationship between Yu Linfei and his father, Yu Pingyu, wasn’t exactly a war, but it certainly wasn’t good.
Originally, Yu Pingyu didn’t plan to interfere in his son’s marriage. But one day, after accidentally coming home and seeing Yu Linfei kissing a man, his temper exploded.
Being old-fashioned, he would never allow a gay man in his family. He talked to Yu Linfei many times, but Yu Linfei always gave him a “soft” refusal, turning any talk about his sexual orientation into a joke.
After this happened many times, Yu Pingyu got fed up. He thought of a simple plan: regardless of whether Yu Linfei was gay or not, he had to marry a woman. In that case, he might as well pick a woman he liked for his son.
With this thought, the father who was furious about his son being gay finally put his plan into action.
To be honest, with Yu Pingyu’s social circle, finding a woman for Yu Linfei wasn’t hard. But he had his own requirements: the woman couldn’t be too smart, as smart women were often trouble, but she had to be beautiful. If she couldn’t even catch his eye, how could she attract Yu Linfei?
Searching for a daughter-in-law based on these standards, Yu Pingyu finally found his target: a woman named Qin Xin.
She was pretty, but her brain seemed to be missing something. Yu Pingyu was very satisfied with this easy-to-control woman, so he assumed Yu Linfei would be satisfied too.
This was entirely the father’s imagination. Perhaps his imagination was too perfect, because when reality hit him, he didn’t even know how to react.
The first meeting between Yu Linfei and Qin Xin was definitely awkward. First, Yu Linfei was exactly one hour late.
Usually a very on-time person, his late arrival was a direct challenge to Yu Pingyu. Not only was he late, but he wasn’t even wearing a suit; he just wore very simple casual clothes.
Qin Xin’s expression was just as bad as Yu Pingyu’s. Seeing Yu Linfei for the first time, she naturally understood why Yu Pingyu had chosen her. To put it simply, this had nothing to do with love; it was just about everyone getting what they needed.
Looking at Yu Linfei’s smiling face, Yu Pingyu was so angry he couldn’t even speak. He couldn’t exactly explode in front of Qin Xin, could he?
Seeing his father’s hesitation, Yu Linfei became even more bold. During that first meeting, he used the excuse of going to the bathroom to simply slip away, leaving Yu Pingyu and Qin Xin staring at each other.
But would one failure make Yu Pingyu give up? No way! In fact, this unpleasant start only made him more stubborn. Being an overly proud man, he made a decision that would annoy Yu Linfei for a long time: Qin Xin would be his future daughter-in-law!
In this way, the father’s mindset was a bit like a child’s: the more you don’t want to do it, the more I’ll make you do it!
Next came the father’s constant harassment. The phone calls were easy to handle, but what annoyed Yu Linfei the most was Qin Xin showing up at his door.
If he kicked her out, it would be too embarrassing for her. But if he let her stay, he had to watch her do things that annoyed him—like the time she tried to kill Wen Cheng. Qin Xin had done many things like that.
These weren’t even the main reasons for Yu Linfei’s resistance. What he hated most was his father’s attitude, acting as if it had to be Qin Xin and no one else. He really didn’t know what that old guy saw in this brainless woman!
From several perspectives, Qin Xin was actually quite innocent. She just wanted a good marriage for herself, yet she somehow became the middleman in the fight between Yu Linfei and his father.
Getting caught in the crossfire was the perfect way to describe Qin Xin’s situation.
However, compared to the father’s anger and Qin Xin’s confusion, Yu Linfei was much luckier.
The first good thing was that he successfully won back his kitten’s heart with three carefully made meals. Finally, he could pet that soft black fur again. The second good thing was that Hami was leaving…
After a week of torture, Yu Linfei felt that if Hami didn’t leave, he would probably go crazy soon.
Not only did he have to stop Hami from destroying the furniture, but more importantly, he had to stop Hami’s attempts to bother Wen Cheng. Because it was Hami’s mating season, Yu Linfei often had to save Wen Cheng two or three times a day. As the victim, Wen Cheng’s spirit was seriously damaged.
Now that this troublemaker was finally leaving, both Yu Linfei and Wen Cheng wondered if they should throw a party to celebrate!
That thought was silently dropped when they saw Fengyu Teng’s very dark expression. But that didn’t stop Yu Linfei’s good mood. He hummed a song while making dinner for Wen Cheng, when he suddenly smelled a strange scent.
The smell was fresh like lemon, but it didn’t feel refreshing. Instead, it made Yu Linfei’s brain feel a bit slow. “What is that smell?” he muttered in confusion. He sniffed and noticed the strange scent was getting stronger.
“…Strange.” He put down the pan and walked out of the kitchen. He saw Wen Cheng sitting on the sofa, playing with a yarn ball. When the cat saw him coming, he sat up straight and acted very serious, as if he hadn’t been doing anything.
“…So stubborn.” Yu Linfei smiled and didn’t call him out. He thought for a moment and walked toward Wen Cheng. At that moment, Yu Linfei was surprised to find that the strange scent was getting stronger and stronger.
“…Xiao Hei, why do you smell so good?” As he got closer, he realized the smell was coming from his cat. Yu Linfei couldn’t stay calm now. He quickly picked up Wen Cheng and sniffed him hard. “Where did you rub against this stuff?”
Scent? What scent? What is Yu Linfei talking about? Wen Cheng was confused. He didn’t smell anything at all.
“So good.” A dazed look appeared in Yu Linfei’s eyes. He felt like something was wrong with him.
“…Meow?” Looking at Yu Linfei’s dazed eyes, Wen Cheng also noticed something was wrong. He gently scratched Yu Linfei’s hand with his paw, wanting to know what was happening.
But before he could find an answer, Yu Linfei actually kissed him on the lips.
“Meow!” Wen Cheng’s fur stood up instantly!
