Rebirth: Using Love as an Excuse for Cruelty - Chapter 12
Baiqing Meng never imagined that Yu Linfei would ever raise a cat.
In his eyes, Yu Linfei was so busy that he couldn’t possibly have the time or energy for a pet. More importantly, he had told Yu Linfei before that he wanted to raise a dog in the house in the future.
For these reasons, Baiqing Meng’s first reaction upon seeing Wen Cheng was: Is this a stray cat? Of course, he quickly dismissed that idea because he noticed the food bowl in the corner of the kitchen.
“…He really is raising a cat.” With a cold sneer, Baiqing Meng walked toward Wen Cheng, trying to catch him.
But how could Wen Cheng let Baiqing Meng have his way? What Qin Xin had done to him already made him very wary of people around Yu Linfei, let alone this Baiqing Meng, whose personality was far from pleasant.
Fortunately, cats are not easy to catch. The agile “Meow-star” took a few leaps, dodged Baiqing Meng’s hand, and easily scrambled under the sofa.
Baiqing Meng was stuck. He had no interest in struggling with a cat for long, but should he just let it go? His eyes suddenly landed on the telephone on the table with the handset left off the hook. Baiqing Meng’s face turned pale.
He picked up the receiver, took a deep breath, and carefully pressed the redial button. Looking at the number on the caller ID, Baiqing Meng’s heart sank. This cat actually called Yu Linfei?? Is this a cat or a monster??
Wen Cheng, who could only see Baiqing Meng’s feet from under the sofa, didn’t know his actions had been discovered. He was still focused on Baiqing Meng’s movements. He saw Baiqing Meng seem to give up on catching him and walk toward another part of the room.
Just as Wen Cheng thought Baiqing Meng was leaving and breathed a sigh of relief, ice-cold water suddenly splashed through the gaps in the sofa directly at him.
“Meow!” Hit by the freezing water, Wen Cheng let out a miserable cry. It was snowing outside, so the water from the tap was incredibly cold. The shock of the water made Wen Cheng jump up immediately.
“Hahaha, you dead cat! Didn’t you call Yu Linfei? You think hiding under the sofa means I can’t do anything to you? What a joke! I’m leaving now. You can just stay under there and wait to die!!” His voice was full of pure malice. Baiqing Meng seemed to be taking out all the frustration he felt toward Yu Linfei on Wen Cheng. His voice was high and sharp, nothing like his usual sweet tone.
…This was probably Baiqing Meng’s true face. Wen Cheng was shaking all over. He thought to himself that Yu Linfei had terrible taste—how could he like someone like this? He must be blind.
Baiqing Meng didn’t plan to stay long. He knew if Yu Linfei came home and saw him there, he would be furious. But what could Yu Linfei really do to him? Baiqing Meng sneered as he used a mop to clean up the water outside the sofa. He believed Yu Linfei would return to his side eventually; it was just a temporary fight, so how long could it last?
With that thought, Baiqing Meng left before Yu Linfei got home, leaving Wen Cheng shivering alone in the gap under the sofa.
Because Yu Linfei was worried the cold would be bad for the cat, he had left the heater on high. Wen Cheng hadn’t felt cold at first. But when Baiqing Meng left, he turned off the heater and opened the tightly closed windows. He didn’t want that annoying cat to be comfortable. If he was going to do something, he would do it thoroughly; that was always his rule.
So, poor Wen Cheng was soaked in cold water and the heat was gone. If he hadn’t been smart enough to call Yu Linfei earlier, he might have truly died under that sofa.
So many disasters… time seemed to stop for Wen Cheng. He didn’t know how long passed, but just when he thought he might freeze to death, a familiar voice called out in the house.
“Xiao Hei? Xiao Hei, where are you?” As soon as Yu Linfei stepped inside, he knew something was wrong. He didn’t feel any warmth at all. The entire house was freezing. Yu Linfei frowned, seeing the heater turned off, the windows wide open with snow blowing in, and the nearly dry… water stains on the floor… Hmm? Water? Yu Linfei’s face darkened. Without worrying about his clothes getting dirty, he knelt on the floor and looked under the sofa.
“Xiao Hei!!!” He could only see a small part of Wen Cheng, which made Yu Linfei’s heart leap into his throat. He called out urgently, “Xiao Hei, come out!! Xiao Hei!!”
He’s calling me…? Feeling dizzy and weak, Wen Cheng stumbled his way out. As soon as he cleared the sofa, a pair of warm hands picked up the frozen kitten and held him tightly.
“Damn it!!” He cursed, which was rare for him. Seeing his lively cat turned into this in an instant made him feel like he was going crazy with anger.
However, he didn’t rush to find out who had entered his house. The first priority was to get Xiao Hei warm.
He hurried to the bathroom for clean towels. He dried the water off Wen Cheng while turning on the heater. Seeing how weak Wen Cheng was, he felt terrible. Even staying at home, the cat faced such things… he was a very poor master.
“Meow…” Having recovered a tiny bit, Wen Cheng found a little energy. He gave a weak meow as Yu Linfei held him tight. He could feel Yu Linfei’s body heat through his thin shirt.
“Xiao Hei, who bullied you?” Though he knew the cat couldn’t answer, he couldn’t help but ask. Yu Linfei’s brow was furrowed tight, and his voice was cold. “Wait until I find that person and get revenge for you, okay?”
Wen Cheng didn’t have the energy to deal with Yu Linfei right now. That time under the sofa had been bone-chilling. He really thought he was going to die… but then Yu Linfei came back.
The moment he was held, Wen Cheng felt so upset he wanted to cry. It was all this jerk Yu Linfei’s fault for attracting so many “bees and butterflies.” If it wasn’t for him, Wen Cheng wouldn’t have died in his past life, and he wouldn’t be dealing with this now! It was too much!
Seeing the hurt and sad look in Wen Cheng’s golden eyes, Yu Linfei’s heart melted. He kept comforting Wen Cheng while holding him, then walked to the kitchen to warm some milk.
Wen Cheng lay still in Yu Linfei’s arms until the smell of warm milk reached his nose, then he let out a meow.
After pouring the milk into a bowl, Yu Linfei held it right up to Wen Cheng’s face.
As he lapped up the milk, the warm food seemed to heat his frozen body from the inside. Wen Cheng’s tense nerves finally relaxed. He resentfully rubbed the milk on his mouth onto Yu Linfei’s shirt, then felt satisfied enough to fall into a heavy sleep.
Between a laugh and a sigh, Yu Linfei watched the kitten’s little tantrum. He gently placed the sleeping Wen Cheng on the bed. Of course, he made sure the bed was warm first.
Once Wen Cheng was settled, Yu Linfei turned his attention to the intruder. He walked to the study, opened his computer, and clicked on a piece of software…
In fact, Yu Linfei had installed security cameras in his house.
It wasn’t that he was a creep, but for a while, he kept losing things. Even though they were just unimportant documents, it was enough to make him cautious. After the cameras were up, he didn’t catch a thief, but he did catch Baiqing Meng cheating on him.
Watching his lover in bed with someone else on the camera, it was hard for Yu Linfei to describe his feelings. He actually wanted to tell Baiqing Meng: If you’re going to cheat, at least be professional about it.
He opened today’s recording and started watching carefully.
…Well, the first thing he saw wasn’t the person bullying Wen Cheng, but his naughty cat. Watching him struggle to open the fridge to steal food, Yu Linfei felt both annoyed and amused. He was annoyed that the cat was so mischievous, but he had to laugh at the kitten’s “guilty but sly” expression.
It seemed his cat was turning into a monster. With a strange expression on his face, Yu Linfei saw someone open his front door, it was indeed Baiqing Meng.
He watched the whole process of Baiqing Meng entering his study to copy files. Suddenly, Yu Linfei was shocked… but it wasn’t because of Baiqing Meng’s actions. It was because his cat was making a phone call.
A cat making a call? He watched the video over and over to make sure he wasn’t hallucinating. Yu Linfei couldn’t describe the complex feelings in his heart. Fine, the cat made a call but how did he know his phone number?
However, this strange feeling was quickly replaced by what happened next. Yu Linfei watched Baiqing Meng splash cold water on Wen Cheng, turn off the heat, and open the windows to let the cold wind in. Yu Linfei’s face was calm, but he accidentally snapped the pen in his hand. He thought with a cold smile: Baiqing Meng, you really are a piece of trash to act so bold.
But this also cleared up one of his worries… it seemed his cat wasn’t a “cat demon” after all. If he were a monster, would he let Baiqing Meng bully him like that? He would have slapped him to death!
Well, if he were a monster… that wouldn’t be so bad. His thoughts were moving in a strange direction. Yu Linfei rested his chin on his hand and thought: Having a silly, dazed, and slightly proud lover like Xiao Hei seems pretty good?
But before he could think more, a meow from the bedroom broke his concentration. He ran to the room and saw Wen Cheng, who had woken up. The kitten was standing by the bed, his tiny body shaking, as he threw up all the milk he had just finished!
