Rebirth: Using Love as an Excuse for Cruelty - Chapter 11
When he woke up the next morning, Yu Linfei was startled again.
He clearly remembered putting Wen Cheng safely on the right side of the bed before going to sleep, but what was the situation now? Looking at Wen Cheng, who was sleeping deeply on his chest, Yu Linfei felt a slight headache.
“…At least he’s not drooling.” He gently moved the cat who was still squinting and sleeping onto the mattress. Yu Linfei got out of bed and started to get dressed.
He had very important things to do today and might have to leave the cat home alone all day. But it shouldn’t be a big problem, right? He looked at Wen Cheng with hesitation as he tied his tie. How much damage could a little kitten do? Thinking this way, Yu Linfei headed out. Of course, before leaving, he filled his cat’s food tray with water and food. He also placed a stool sideways next to the bed so it would be easy for the cat to get down after waking up.
So Yu Linfei left, having no idea that he had completely underestimated his cat’s destructive power.
In his dreams, Wen Cheng didn’t know his caregiver was gone. He hadn’t been a cat for very long, but in these short days, he hadn’t had a single night of good sleep. With the soul of a human, how could he sleep peacefully in a cat bed like a real cat?
Now that he finally got onto a bed and was back in the embrace of a soft mattress, not enjoying it would be a waste. Wen Cheng purred and slept, having many confusing dreams. By the time he was fully awake, it was already noon.
Chinchilla cats are very active when they are young and love being near people; they only become more serious as they get older. After a good sleep, Wen Cheng wiped his face with his paws and began to energetically look around the room… well, Yu Linfei’s bedroom.
Seeing the clock on the wall and feeling his empty stomach, he was shocked to find he had slept until nearly 12:00 PM.
So hungry! Using the stool Yu Linfei left for him, he slowly jumped to the floor. Wen Cheng wiggled his little body, trying to find something to eat. He thought Yu Linfei wouldn’t be so cruel as to leave him with no food.
As expected, he found his food tray in a corner of the kitchen. Looking at the leftover fish, cat food, and a bowl of milk, Wen Cheng… showed extreme disgust.
Yu Linfei must be trying to get revenge because he stole the bed! Deciding this was the case, Wen Cheng turned his eyes toward the large double-door refrigerator in the kitchen.
A good cat must be able to handle the living room, handle the kitchen, open the fridge, and jump over buildings! His mother cat’s advice suddenly popped into his head. Wen Cheng’s eyes shone with determination, then he walked toward the fridge with steady steps.
“Yu Linfei, you’re daydreaming again.” Fengyu Teng’s voice was full of frustration. “What is wrong with you? I’ve seen you spacing out all morning.”
“I’m thinking about my cat.” Spinning a pen with his hand, Yu Linfei felt a bit uneasy. “Do you think he’ll be okay alone at home?”
“Please!! That’s just a cat, and a tiny kitten at that.” Fengyu Teng didn’t know what to say to his boss’s distracted mind. He threw a folder at Yu Linfei. “Instead of worrying about your cat, why don’t you look at this data on the Wen Corporation that you’re supposed to deal with?”
“Hmm.” Realizing he was acting a bit strange, Yu Linfei took the folder. “Okay.”
Wen Cheng obviously didn’t know Yu Linfei was worried about him. If he did, he would probably be even happier. Because, to protect the dignity of a cat, after working very hard, he managed to pull open the heavy refrigerator door.
The cold air hitting his face didn’t stop Wen Cheng’s excitement. Once he got the fridge open a crack, he used even more strength to squeeze the door open wider.
Then Wen Cheng poked his head into the giant fridge. Hmm, what is there to eat?
Searching around, he quickly found his target… dried squid and yogurt on the top shelf. Although it was strange that Yu Linfei had these things, Wen Cheng didn’t think too much about it. His hungry stomach made his eyes turn green with greed.
Slowly, he started climbing from the bottom. Level by level, using his claws and spending a lot of time, he finally reached the top. With tears of joy, he bit into a sealed bag of dried squid. Because the fridge was too cold, he first used his teeth to throw the squid onto the floor, then knocked over a bottle of yogurt. Only then did he lazily climb back down the shelves to the floor.
“Meow-woo, meow-woo~” Looking happily at his prize, Wen Cheng ignored the open fridge. He used his teeth to tear open the bag of squid and began eating his delicious lunch bite by bite.
Actually, Wen Cheng really loved this snack. When he was human, he loved bringing big bags of it home from the supermarket. Now that he was a cat, his love for dried squid hadn’t changed; it had even… grown stronger.
Delicious squid paired with yogurt was like a dream. After finishing the food, Wen Cheng gave a little hiccup, then turned around to try to hide the evidence.
However, before he could close the fridge, he heard footsteps.
By reflex, Wen Cheng zipped into the gap behind the refrigerator…
It turned out Wen Cheng’s instinct was right, because the person coming wasn’t Yu Linfei, but Baiqing Meng.
Wearing a white shirt, Baiqing Meng’s face looked very upset. He held a large ring of keys. Looking at the open fridge and the dried squid scattered on the floor, he searched the kitchen with his eyes, trying to find what had caused this mess.
Wen Cheng didn’t dare let Baiqing Meng find him. Who knew what this boy—who looked nice but was actually very mean—would do to him if he were caught.
But why did he have the keys to Yu Linfei’s house? Feeling uncomfortable, Wen Cheng watched as Baiqing Meng closed the fridge and cleaned up the remains on the floor.
“What the hell,” Baiqing Meng muttered unhappily. He was very annoyed by what he saw as soon as he entered the house. “You don’t come home for a few days and just let the place get messy, Yu Linfei. Honestly.”
…Don’t come home for a few days? Wen Cheng was stunned. Did Baiqing Meng live with Yu Linfei? Were they still together? That wasn’t right. Remembering Yu Linfei’s tone and face when he got the call yesterday, Wen Cheng had a guess: maybe Baiqing Meng cheated and Yu Linfei found out. Yu Linfei wanted to break up, but Baiqing Meng was refusing to leave.
Based on Baiqing Meng’s personality, he would definitely do something like that. The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed. Wen Cheng couldn’t help but quietly move to peek at Baiqing Meng as he walked toward the living room.
But Baiqing Meng’s destination wasn’t the living room; it was Yu Linfei’s study.
He walked into the study and directly turned on Yu Linfei’s computer.
How can he just touch Yu Linfei’s things? Wen Cheng poked his head out, watching carefully. He had a bad feeling. It looked like Baiqing Meng was looking for something.
Whatever he was looking for, it couldn’t be anything good. Opening Yu Linfei’s private computer was crossing a line. Baiqing Meng seemed nervous, and his movements got faster.
He had to do something. Looking at what Baiqing Meng was doing, Wen Cheng bit his lip. Even though Yu Linfei was his enemy, he didn’t want to see him framed by Baiqing Meng like this.
But he was just a kitten now. There was so little he could do. After thinking for a while, Wen Cheng finally came up with a plan…
He ran quietly toward the phone in the living room. Wen Cheng jumped gracefully onto the coffee table, pushed the receiver off, and used his clumsy paws to dial a number he knew by heart.
At this moment, Wen Cheng didn’t think too much about what Yu Linfei would think of this call, nor was he worried about being suspected. After all, he was just a cat that couldn’t talk. This identity was his best cover. Who would suspect their own cat of calling them?
The phone rang a few times and then connected. Yu Linfei’s voice came through. He sounded confused about why someone was calling him from home. After saying “Hello?” a few times, he hung up.
Wen Cheng glanced at the study behind him, then dialed Yu Linfei’s mobile again. He was afraid that if he only called once, Yu Linfei would think it was just an accident.
This time, Yu Linfei realized something was wrong. After a moment of silence, he said, “I’m coming back right now.”
Great. Wen Cheng breathed a sigh of relief. He thought of this as paying Yu Linfei back for that bag of dried squid.
“Oh? Why is there a cat here?” A confused voice suddenly sounded from behind. Wen Cheng froze and turned his head. He found that at some point, Baiqing Meng—holding a freshly burned disc—had appeared right behind him!
