- Chapter 5 - Guide to Raising a Dog as the Demon Lord (5)
With the secret realm about to open, visiting cultivators were all staying at local inns. However, the Demon Lord was not only foul-tempered but also extremely delicate, meaning he truly looked down on the inns within Fuxue City and had long ago arranged a private residence in advance.
The two of them walked down a sparsely populated alley and stopped before a seemingly modest courtyard.
Shen Zaixin formed a hand seal with his fingertips, and the dilapidated vermilion gates before them rippled and dissipated like a reflection in a mirror, replaced instantly by the grand and gorgeous doors of a palace.
152: [Did you literally just move the Demon Palace here?]
Shen Zaixin pushed open the door and walked inside, casually inspecting the exquisite and magnificent pavilions surrounding him before sighing, [It is barely liveable.]
152: […]
The moment Shen Zaixin stepped through the gates, a petite figure in the courtyard pavilion came running toward him eagerly, followed by another composed and graceful shadow.
“My Lord!” The young maiden wore a green gauzy dress, her features pretty and vivacious. Standing beside him, her eyes brimmed with undisguised adoration. “You are finally back! Qing’er has been waiting for you forever!”
The white-robed woman behind her stood quietly to the side, her expression devoid of the usual deference seen among the people of the Demon Realm, remaining calm and peaceful.
Since she called herself Qing’er, Xie Linfeng immediately thought of the Left Protector known for her erratic temperament and love for toying with human hearts in the legends of the Demon Realm, Mu Qing.
Who would have imagined that the tyrannical maiden in everyone else’s eyes possessed such a shy and bashful side?
As for the calm and reserved white-robed woman behind her, she must be the Ghost Physician Jie Yuhua, the only person in the Demon Realm who had never revealed her true face.
Judging by her unique attitude, her status was undoubtedly extraordinary.
“Mn.” Shen Zaixin gave a faint acknowledgment, then raised an eyebrow at Mu Qing. “By the look of you, where have you been playing around again?”
“Hehe, only my Lord knows me.” Mu Qing broke into a sweet, clear smile, her voice crisp and uplifted. “A few days ago, I sneaked into the Canglan Sect with Xiao Fang. Those inner sect disciples were provoked by me into fighting each other every single day, injuring themselves so badly, yet they still had the nerve to come care about an outsider like me. These righteous sect disciples are truly both hypocritical and foolish.”
Hearing words like Canglan Sect, Jie Yuhua suddenly realized things were going south. She glanced secretly at the Lord’s smiling-yet-expressionless face, but it was already too late to stop her.
“Oh?” Shen Zaixin raised a hand to stroke the maiden’s head, a smile lingering on his lips while his eyes remained icy. “Did this seat not say not to provoke the Canglan Sect for the time being?”
“But—” Mu Qing instinctively pouted, wanting to act spoiled as usual, but upon catching his cold gaze, her face turned pale. With the Lord’s jade hand resting on her head, the maiden wanted to drop to her knees and beg for forgiveness but lacked the courage to move, only managing to tremble as she whispered, “My Lord, Qing’er knows she was wrong…”
“Hah.” Shen Zaixin sighed helplessly, casting an apologetic look at her. A flash of crimson dark light swept across the palm resting on her head, and the next instant, the once-vivacious maiden transformed into countless points of light, scattered away by the wind.
Jie Yuhua’s expression remained calm, seemingly accustomed to such scenes. She stood in silence, waiting for the Lord’s instructions.
Shen Zaixin withdrew his hand, glanced at her indifferently, and said, “Tell the Soul Refining Pavilion that the selection for the next Left Protector can begin.”
“Understood.”
The white-robed woman replied softly. A spatial array activated behind her, and she stepped into it, vanishing instantly from the spot.
Silence returned to the courtyard. An autumnal wind swept past the broad sleeves of his robes, causing his waterfall of dark hair to sway as well. Viewed from afar, he looked as ethereal and pure as an immortal.
Yet witnessing such a breathtaking sight only filled Xie Linfeng’s heart with a bone-chilling cold. A sense of sorrow and bitterness, one that did not belong to him and yet seemed born from the depths of his soul, wrapped tightly around him.
If not for the congenital spiritual marrow, was he any different from Mu Qing in Shen Zaixin’s eyes? If he had spoken disrespectfully just once during the beginning, would he have met the exact same fate as today?
Xie Linfeng had never realized so clearly that the person before him was the Demon Lord Shen Zaixin, and not some noble young master who merely enjoyed playing malicious pranks as he had previously thought.
Perhaps all of Shen Zaixin’s special treatment toward him stemmed from the spiritual marrow, or perhaps it was due to some truth he had yet to discover.
In any case, it was never because of himself.
No, what Shen Zaixin did had nothing to do with him anyway!
Xie Linfeng took a deep breath, closing his eyes to banish the inexplicable emotions from his mind. Being affected so easily by Shen Zaixin’s casual actions was completely unlike him.
It had to be the influence of the blood contract, absolutely.
When he finally calmed his mind and opened his eyes, the courtyard was empty, the person long gone. Only the peach branches by the main hall, out of season entirely, swayed in the breeze, scattering petals across the stone steps.
Inside the hall, flickering candlelight illuminated two intimately intertwined figures on the bed.
Xie Linfeng remembered only sitting in meditation to cultivate for a moment, yet things had somehow spiraled completely out of control.
“What are you thinking about?”
The red-robed beauty rested his head on Xie Linfeng’s shoulder, his jade-white fingers parting Xie Linfeng’s robes to stroke his burning chest, his trailing voice intoxicating and seductive.
His Adam’s apple bobbed uncontrollably. Suppressing the tremor of his touch, Xie Linfeng lowered his gaze to stare at the exquisite face in his arms, his voice hoarse. “Nothing, nothing.”
Clearly, he had been deliberately humiliated just during the day, yet right now he was straddling him with eyes full of affection, teasing him until his heart was sent into complete chaos.
What a tormenting enchantress; Shen Zaixin was driving him insane.
“Am I good-looking?”
A subtle dark fragrance lingered around the tip of his nose, and Xie Linfeng’s eyes flashed with an involuntary daze. “Good-looking.”
He had thought him good-looking when stealing glances during the day, but now it was even more so.
The beauty let out a low laugh, seemingly quite pleased with his reaction. With a firm push of the hand resting on his chest, the two of them tumbled together onto the bed, and the bed curtains closed automatically without any wind.
With his robes half-undressed, the candlelight spilled through the gauze curtains onto the beauty’s flawless skin. As if stroking him, Xie Linfeng suddenly felt a surge of jealousy, rolling over to pin the other beneath him and blocking out the flickering light.
In the dimness, cyan and red robes entangled together. He leaned down to kiss him, only for the beauty to suddenly ask, “Are you truly willing to be my dual cultivation vessel?”
Willing? At this very moment, he was so hooked he was ready to hand over his very soul.
Without another word, Xie Linfeng used his actions to answer.
He gripped the ankle he had coveted for so long, feeling as though his palm held a piece of smooth, flawless white jade.
Then, applying a slight bit of pressure, he left his canine teeth’s mark upon the white jade.
“Cheap dog, how dare you bite me!”
Perhaps he had hurt him, as the other’s hurried gasps carried a hint of exasperation. Xie Linfeng’s unrestrained brows and eyes burned with desire. He let out a low laugh, his eyes filled with obsession and a frantic desire for possession: “Does my master not know? Marking territory is an evil hound’s instinct.”
Before he could truly claim the person beneath him, everything around him suddenly receded, and he plummeted into an endless darkness.
The person on the bed opened their eyes abruptly.
His heart pounded like a drum against his ribs, and his inner garments were soaked through with sweat. Xie Linfeng turned his head to watch the morning light pour in through the lattice window, feeling the stickiness clinging to his skin while his gaze remained suspicious and uncertain.
Having lived for twenty years, it was his first time dreaming of such an unspeakable dream, especially since the person sharing intimacy with him in the dream was none other than the demon lord Shen Zaixin.
He had truly lost his mind!
It must be because he had neglected his sword practice these past few days that these extra, filthy thoughts had cropped up.
Xie Linfeng immediately got off the bed, took a quick cold-water bath, and finally felt the strange heat in his chest subside.
Binding his loose hair with a cyan silk ribbon into a high ponytail, he picked up the Zhaoyan sword resting against the bedside and strode out of the side hall.
In the courtyard, Shen Zaixin was lying on a recliner beneath the peach tree, holding an untitled book and reading it with great relish, when he was suddenly distracted by the sound of the side hall door opening.
Usually at this hour, Xie Linfeng would either be meditating inside his room or practicing sword forms outside. Why was he coming out at this time today?
Shen Zaixin raised his eyelids to look over, only to see the man in cyan martial attire walking past him with a rigid, straight-ahead gaze, his shifting eyes revealing something rather strange.
Something was wrong.
“Stop right there,” Shen Zaixin said lazily. “Dog, did you not see your master sitting right here?”
Xie Linfeng halted in his tracks. Surprisingly, he did not react with anger to the title, merely stiffening his neck and refusing to make eye contact. “What is it?”
Shen Zaixin’s phoenix eyes narrowed slightly; he had a feeling there was something fishy about the male protagonist.
[152, I want to redeem the one-time mind-reading skill from the store.]
152: [Does he have any idea how many points he currently has?]
Shen Zaixin: [Tsk, put it on my tab.]
152: [Dear Host, we do not feature a loan function.]
Shen Zaixin sighed with a look of mock regret: [And here I thought you were more capable than all the other systems. Turns out…]
152 couldn’t help pondering. Could it be that when Shen Zaixin called it special earlier, he had actually noticed its sparkling points and thought it exceptionally brilliant?
152: [Of course I am more capable than those single-core systems, I am multi-core!]
It covertly glanced at the price of the mind-reading skill in the store, then tallied its own savings, deciding it wasn’t even that expensive.
Then it spoke up: [A one-time mind-reading skill costs ten thousand points, and you have to pay me back twelve thousand.]
It would just deduct it directly from the Host’s task points later anyway, earning a neat two-thousand-point profit. It definitely wasn’t because it had gone soft from being complimented.
A dark light flickered in Shen Zaixin’s eyes as he hooked his lips into a smile: [I knew you were the best.]
152: […] What was this sudden, heart-fluttering, blushing impulse?
Shifting his gaze back to Xie Linfeng, Shen Zaixin probed casually, “Acting so guilty, could it be that you did something unspeakable?”
Xie Linfeng’s heart skipped a beat: He absolutely could not let Shen Zaixin know that he had dreamed of such a filthy thing!
A dream? What kind of dream? Looking at his shifty, evasive expression, could it be—
“Could it be that you had some sort of unspeakable dream?” Shen Zaixin stood up from the recliner with a smile, walking leisurely up to him with a breath as fragrant as orchid blossoms: “What did you do in your dream?”
“Cease your nonsense!” A flash of panic crossed Xie Linfeng’s eyes. Forcing himself to calm down, his peripheral vision suddenly caught sight of the open pages on the recliner, and upon seeing the contents, his handsome face flushed bright red.
In broad daylight, Shen Zaixin was actually reading an erotic picture book amidst such poetic scenery!
It was even more unwatchable than the dream he had just had!
Shen Zaixin heard every single word of his inner monologue loud and clear. Following his gaze to the untitled book on the recliner, the corners of his lips curled upward. He picked up the book smoothly and waved it right in front of Xie Linfeng’s eyes: “Want to read?”
Xie Linfeng pulled his gaze back as if electrocuted, yet the ambiguous images he had glimpsed moments before refused to leave his mind, forcing him to recall that vibrant dream once again.
The person in his dream was all white and pink everywhere; would Shen Zaixin’s skin be just as fair as the one in the dream?
Damn it, what on earth was he thinking!
