- Chapter 5 - Yandere No. 1
“I don’t want to see you,” Li Ruoruo muttered, her head hanging so low her chin was practically pressed against her chest.
Fang Yu let out a soft, airy chuckle. From her vantage point, she could only see the tip of the girl’s dainty nose, which had turned a faint, dewy pink. A flicker of something stirred in Fang Yu’s heart. Without warning, she reached out and snatched Li Ruoruo’s backpack away.
Her arm suddenly dipped. She had drastically underestimated the weight of the thing.
“Do you have rocks in here or something?”
“Ah!” Li Ruoruo let out a startled cry. “What are you doing?” The sudden lack of weight on her back made her feel exposed and insecure.
Fang Yu unzipped the bag and stuffed the homework she had been carrying all day inside. The sheer number of exercise books already crammed in there made her eyes swim.
She shot Li Ruoruo an inquisitive look: You can’t even write right now; why are you lugging all these books home?
“If I’m not looking at my books, I don’t feel at peace,” Li Ruoruo whispered so softly it was almost inaudible. She knew trying to explain the anxiety of a top student to someone like Fang Yu was like playing a lute to a cow.
“Let’s go. I’m carrying it for you!”
Without waiting for an answer, Fang Yu slung the heavy bag over one shoulder and strode off. Li Ruoruo’s face twisted in conflict, but ultimately, she hurried after her.
Fang Yu didn’t say a word the whole way. Li Ruoruo had no idea where she was being led, but strangely, she didn’t feel panicked.
“Boss, straighten her hair. Use your best treatment,” Fang Yu commanded as they entered a shop.
“Coming right up!” the middle-aged owner chirped, scurrying over with a blooming smile.
Fang Yu pushed Li Ruoruo into a stylist’s chair. The girl was still looking around, completely bewildered.
“You don’t actually like your current hairstyle, do you?” Fang Yu stood behind her, lifting a few strands of Li Ruoruo’s dry, fried curls between her fingers.
In the original owner’s memories, Li Ruoruo had been a pure, rule-abiding girl when they first met. Her hair had been neat and natural, following school regulations to the letter. But to cater to Fang Yu’s preferences, she had gone to a salon to get these “trendy” perms, resulting in her being reprimanded by the homeroom teacher multiple times. Li Ruoruo hadn’t cared; every time Fang Yu changed her hair, she would rush to get something similar, even if it didn’t suit her at all.
Fang Yu felt that Li Ruoruo looked best in her original state.
“Little sister, look at this. This is the most expensive treatment in the shop—an imported brand. 500 yuan?” The owner brought out a small vial like it was a sacred relic, smiling fawningly.
“That one. Use it,” Fang Yu said, waving her hand to cut off the rest of the sales pitch.
The owner moved with lightning speed, internally cheering at his luck for running into such a generous “little gold mine.”
When they finally stepped out of the salon, Li Ruoruo’s aura had transformed. The dry, frizzy curls that had made her face look sickly and pale were gone, replaced by silky, straight black hair that cascaded down her back.
She was the very definition of a “pure and innocent” beauty.
For some reason, Fang Yu suddenly felt a desperate urge to kiss her. She actually leaned in, intending to act on it, but before she could get close, Li Ruoruo recoiled several steps. She looked flustered. “It’s late. I, I need to go home. You should go back early, too.”
Taking advantage of Fang Yu’s stunned silence, Li Ruoruo snatched her bag back, hugged it to her chest, and fled in a panic.
Fang Yu traced her thumb over her lip, feeling a bit unsatisfied. “You used to be the one who never wanted me to go home early.”
In the twilight, Fang Yu saw the girl stumble slightly over her own feet, which immediately brightened her mood. She tucked her hands behind her head and strolled leisurely down the path.
[Host, if you aren’t going to ‘marry’ her, stop flirting with her!]
The System, which had been silent for a long time, suddenly piped up with a sigh, giving Fang Yu a fright.
018, I thought you went to the dogs?
[Pah! Host, you’re completing the tasks so well I have no room to intervene. I can only sit back and watch the show.]
What did you mean by that comment just now? Fang Yu felt the System’s remark carried a deeper meaning, and 018 wasn’t usually one for idle chatter.
[Nothing.]
The System immediately denied it and went back into “invisible mode,” refusing to pop up no matter how much Fang Yu called out. Close call, I almost let the Host figure it out, the System thought, wiping away non-existent cold sweat.
On her third day in this world, Fang Yu ran into the school’s first mock exam. Every cell in her body danced with excitement; she even reduced the frequency of her flirting with Li Ruoruo to focus. After picking up the textbooks she hadn’t touched in years and reviewing the material once, she felt confident.
During the exams, the sight of Fang Yu being the first to hand in her paper for every single subject left a deep impression on everyone in the remedial class. The news spread like wildfire through the school. The teachers’ opinions were predictably unanimous: Fang Yu was just making headlines for being a delinquent again.
The first ones to be proven wrong were the Honors class teachers.
When the mock exam rankings were released, the number one spot in the entire grade was occupied by none other than Fang Yu!
Even Li Ruoruo had been pushed down to second place.
The remedial class homeroom teacher was over the moon. He told anyone who would listen: “We have this student, Fang Yu, right? She usually just slacks off and never touches a book, but once the exam starts, she easily takes the top spot!”
It got to the point where other teachers would take a hundred-meter detour just to avoid him. Just shut up already! As if her grades have anything to do with your teaching!
“Didn’t I give you permission to skip the homework? The university entrance exams are coming up; the most important thing is for your wound to heal,” the elegant female teacher at the podium advised with concern. She was terrified that their “star pupil” would have a breakdown or underperform due to her injury. After all, the wrist was crucial for the physical act of writing.
Li Ruoruo remained silent, her thoughts drifting.
All of her homework for the past few days had been written by Fang Yu. From the moment she turned them in to when the teacher returned them, every page was covered in red checkmarks. There wasn’t a single error.
And now, hearing that Fang Yu had taken first place in the exams, she felt like she was dreaming.
