- Chapter 11 - Yandere No. 1
Fang Yu and Li Ruoruo stood back-to-back, their hands linked. Panda placed a balloon in the small gap between their shoulder blades.
“You may begin.”
Fang Yu took a tentative step. “I’m moving.” Li Ruoruo squeezed her hand slightly, signaling she was ready.
Despite all her mental preparation, the moment Fang Yu stepped onto the acupressure mat, a jolt of “electricity” shot through her limbs, momentarily paralyzing her.
“Yu-yu?” Li Ruoruo asked, sensing her hesitation at the starting line.
Prompted by her girlfriend’s concern, Fang Yu took a deep breath. It’s just a little shock. Let’s do this!
The two maintained a steady, synchronized pace. Once they grew accustomed to the stinging sensation, it wasn’t so bad. Li Ruoruo had always been exceptionally good at enduring pain, and Fang Yu found it even easier; she didn’t feel true pain, only a fizzy, numbing sensation like a mild electric pulse.
When they finally stepped onto the smooth floor at the finish line, Fang Yu realized they were the fastest in their group. The other couples were still wailing and struggling back on the mats.
Relaxing her guard, Fang Yu noticed that Li Ruoruo was drenched in sweat. Her small braids were damp and matted against her neck. She looked a far cry from the ethereal “gardenia” who had left the house earlier, but her eyes were sparkling with excitement. “We, we passed!”
“Yeah, Ruoruo is amazing.” Fang Yu used her sleeve to gently wipe the sweat from Ruoruo’s face. Ruoruo tilted her head slightly, accepting the gesture naturally.
After the first round, only fifteen teams remained. Among them was the friendly male couple they had met earlier; the taller man gave them a respectful nod.
Panda announced, “Congratulations on surviving the mats! This next round will test your level of mutual trust.”
“Trust?” several couples asked.
Panda didn’t answer. Instead, she took black blindfolds from a staff member and walked down the line, randomly picking one person from each couple to blindfold. When she reached their group, she chose Li Ruoruo.
“These blindfolds are breathable but completely opaque,” Panda explained. “The person blindfolded must follow their partner’s instructions perfectly. Reach the destination without falling, and you pass.”
Panda handed Fang Yu a route card. Fang Yu scanned it. “Got it.”
“Ruoruo, to the left, there’s a table. Remember it?”
“Mhm.”
“Walk toward it now, about ten meters. I’ve got you.”
Li Ruoruo let Fang Yu lead her, walking toward the table from memory.
“Stop!”
Though the command was sudden, Li Ruoruo stopped instantly, her footing steady.
“Reach out and touch the objects on the table. Gently.”
Li Ruoruo was puzzled; she distinctly remembered the table being empty before she was blindfolded.
“What do you feel?”
“It feels like a cup,” Ruoruo said tentatively.
“Good. Find the fifth cup, pick it up, and drink what’s inside.”
“One, two, three, four, five.” Wary of a prank, Ruoruo didn’t gulp it down. She took small, dainty sips.
“Identify the liquid.”
It was sweet and refreshing. “Orange juice?”
Fang Yu beamed with pride. Her Ruoruo was simply too incredible!
They navigated various obstacles until they reached the most difficult part of the second round—the point where most teams failed. Fang Yu felt a flicker of nervousness. “Ruoruo, fall backward. Don’t think about anything else. I will catch you.”
“Okay.” Without a hint of fear, Li Ruoruo fell straight back, her ankles not even wobbling. She trusted Fang Yu completely.
“Challenge Success!” Panda cheered, stepping forward to remove the blindfold. She couldn’t help but applaud. “You two have the best chemistry I’ve seen as a host. The third round should be a breeze for you.”
Fang Yu and Li Ruoruo exchanged a look, both feeling a bit uneasy.
Was the third round a chemistry test? The original owner and Li Ruoruo had virtually zero natural chemistry, and Fang Yu was just an interloper. She began to worry they’d have to hand over those couple’s outfits to someone else.
After a short break, the interview round began.
“When was the last time you kissed?”
While Li Ruoruo was still thinking, Fang Yu quickly pecked her on the lips. “Just now!”
“Your anniversary?”
Both answered in unison: “February 14th.”
“When you’re ‘busy’ in the bedroom, who is on top and who is on the bottom?”
Li Ruoruo: “She’s on top, I’m on the bottom.”
Fang Yu: “I’m on top, she’s on the bottom.”
Next came the individual questions.
“Partner’s birthday?”
Li Ruoruo didn’t miss a beat: “March 12th.”
“Her favorite food?”
“Pantis (Mantis) shrimp. And her KFC fries must be dipped in ketchup.”
“Her favorite lipstick shade?”
“Grapefruit pink.”
“Does she kick the blankets at night?”
“She kicks them.”
Li Ruoruo had been kicked out of bed by Fang Yu more than once. When she’d confronted Fang Yu about it the next morning, Fang Yu never believed her, even accusing Ruoruo of making things up just to get her attention. She had felt so wronged back then.
When it was time to interview Fang Yu, Panda was nearly in tears.
“What is your partner’s favorite thing to do?”
“Like me.”
“What does she like to eat?”
“Whatever I like to eat.”
“Does she kick the blankets?”
“I don’t know, but she always tucks me in.”
The kicker was that whenever Panda went to verify these answers with Li Ruoruo, Ruoruo just nodded in agreement, not at all angry. In the past, Panda had seen couples get into screaming matches if their partner knew nothing about them. The You family’s competition was notorious for “destroying relationships.” But this pair was different. Panda hoped all future couples could be like Fang Yu and Li Ruoruo.
When the competition ended, only Fang Yu’s team and the male couple won the grand prize. The organizers even offered them a second set. Li Ruoruo, being thoughtful, chose a set for Han Zhishuang. “A little something for when you eventually find love.”
Han Zhishuang’s eyes welled with tears. “I’m so touched, don’t forget me when you’re rich and famous.”
Striking while the iron was hot, Fang Yu turned to Li Ruoruo to confess her feelings. “Ruoruo, I won’t ever act like a scumbag again. I’ll only have eyes for you. Can we go back to the way we were?”
“I’ll just give you guys some space.” Han Zhishuang backed away, leaving them alone.
Li Ruoruo felt conflicted. Over the past few weeks, she had felt Fang Yu’s sincerity; it was something that couldn’t be faked. Just as she was struggling with herself, about to nod in agreement—
Suddenly, a girl rushed out from the crowd, grabbing Fang Yu’s arm and screaming hysterically: “Fang Yu! Can’t you look back at me just once?”
Fang Yu, Li Ruoruo, and Han Zhishuang all wore the exact same expression: absolute bewilderment.
Han Zhishuang hurried back over, tugging on Ruoruo’s sleeve. “Ruoruo, who is this?”
Li Ruoruo’s expression turned ice-cold. “Heh.”
This was undoubtedly one of the many “dogs” Fang Yu had been seeing on the side, finally tracking her down.
And to think she had almost believed Fang Yu’s bullshit about being “faithful.”
