- Chapter 5 - The God of Morning Classes (Part 4)
After class ended, Wu Hui had no more sessions. He prepared to return to his dormitory but found that a torrential downpour had started outside.
The sky was gray, and Aliston was shrouded in a hazy veil of rain. Students with umbrellas stepped into the downpour first, gradually disappearing into the mist.
Wu Hui: 【Jianqiu, why did you not remind me that it would rain today?】
Jianqiu: 【I did remind you.】
Wu Hui: 【When?】
Jianqiu: 【When you were leaving, I kept shouting “Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain!”】
Wu Hui: 【I thought you were mimicking the sound of horse hooves.】
Pei Huaiye, who had accompanied him to class, had arrived empty-handed and certainly did not have an umbrella.
Pei Huaiye said, “Wait a moment. I will have someone come to pick us up.”
“Do you two not have an umbrella?”
Behind them, Nian Zhi approached with a sweet smile, holding out a small umbrella. “We have an extra one. You can take it and use it.”
Wu Hui and Pei Huaiye turned around.
The moment Wu Hui saw that smile, he could hear the malicious schemes churning in her head, but they truly had no other choice. He suggested, “Why do you not wait for your ride, and I will go back first?”
Nian Zhi thought to herself: You are being foolish!
Pei Huaiye also glanced at the umbrella, which was clearly not big enough for two people. After a half-second pause, he said slowly, “I just received word that they cannot come.”
Wu Hui tilted his head. “Why?”
Before Pei Huaiye could speak, Nian Zhi interjected, “Because the school is flooded! It is flooded to the point that the road is impassable for anyone unless they are walking in pairs.”
Wu Hui slowly turned his gaze toward Pei Huaiye.
Pei Huaiye nodded with a perfectly straight face. “That is correct.”
Wu Hui chuckled. “Very well.” He took the umbrella. “Then let us squeeze in.”
Pei Huaiye naturally took the umbrella and opened it, taking on the labor of holding it. “Let us head back to your dormitory first, before the rain gets even heavier.”
They thanked Nian Zhi, and the two men stepped into the rain sharing the single umbrella.
Nian Zhi watched their retreating backs as they were forced to huddle close together, mentally savoring the delicious drama unfolding before her eyes.
A friend asked, “Zhi-zhi, why did you not give them the large umbrella?”
“Are you stupid?” Nian Zhi replied. “Giving them a small umbrella forces them to stay close, grab a little hand, wrap an arm around a waist. Once they reach the dorm, they are bound to be soaked. No matter who gets wet, what follows will be scandalous!”
“Got it.” The friend said, “But we do not have enough umbrellas either, do we?”
Nian Zhi waved to the side of the road, and a black business car drove through the rain. A bodyguard in black stepped out to hold an umbrella for them. Nian Zhi told her friends to get in the car. “Who walks in the rain? What if I dirty my new shoes?”
The umbrella was indeed too small, and it could not fully cover two adult men.
However, the scene Nian Zhi had envisioned did not come to pass. Even though a large patch of Pei Huaiye’s shoulder was soaked, he restrained himself and did not touch Wu Hui, save for the occasional friction of fabric as they walked.
The umbrella was tilted entirely toward Wu Hui. Noticing this, he raised an eyebrow. “Am I some kind of monster?”
Pei Huaiye held the umbrella and lowered his head slightly, meeting Wu Hui’s gaze through the chaotic curtain of rain.
He said, “I am.”
Wu Hui nodded. “Very honest.” He then added, “Those who follow the rules too strictly never receive any rewards.”
Pei Huaiye maintained his posture, staring straight ahead. “Rewards are meant to be earned by oneself. What others give you, you might not necessarily want.”
Wu Hui twirled the beaded bracelet on his wrist. “What is it that you want?”
The rain grew heavier, pattering against the umbrella. Aside from the sound of the rain against the world, nothing else could be heard.
The rain landed on Pei Huaiye’s shoulder, his voice barely audible: “Everything.”
By the time they reached the dormitory building, Wu Hui’s trouser legs were almost completely soaked.
Pei Huaiye had it worse. Half of his body was drenched, his clothes clinging to his skin and outlining the vague contours of his muscles. Beneath the umbrella, his eyes were dark, bright, and profound. “Go back inside and do not catch a cold.”
Wu Hui curled his lips and played along. “Alright, thank you, Senior.”
“…”
Pei Huaiye had always been patient; it did not matter if he did not get a reward. That had never been his goal anyway.
However, just as he was about to leave, Wu Hui called him back.
“Wait.”
Pei Huaiye paused as he watched Wu Hui turn to head upstairs. When he returned, he was holding a jacket.
Although his body was just a data-constructed projection, Wu Hui refused to wear clothes worn by others. He had replaced all of Chu Yu’s clothes with new ones. This jacket was slightly large, fitting Pei Huaiye, who was a size bigger than him, perfectly.
He handed it over. “Senior, your clothes are all wet. It would be better to wear a jacket.”
Pei Huaiye lived alone in his dormitory, which was outfitted more luxuriously than a presidential suite.
He placed the jacket Wu Hui had given him on the bed without checking it. He first went to the bathroom to take a shower and then came out wiping his hair, wearing only a bath towel.
With a towel casually draped over his shoulders, Pei Huaiye looked down, staring at the jacket for a long time.
He had not touched Wu Hui today, but they had been so close that the cold fragrance emanating from the youth had permeated his body, triggering a terrible tremor across his skin.
Pei Huaiye ran his fingers over the jacket, seemingly able to feel the scent of Wu Hui lingering on it.
Suddenly, he grabbed the jacket and pulled it into his embrace. The veins on his arms bulged as he buried his face in it, inhaling the lingering scent as if a parched traveler in a desert had finally reached a water source. He was incredibly thirsty, every cell in his body screaming with desire, as if he were plunging into deep water, willing to drown.
It was too faint, so faint that it was almost gone.
It was not enough.
It was not nearly enough.
“Pei Huaiye should be back in his dorm by now.”
Wu Hui changed his clothes after his shower. His roommate was still in class, so he was alone in the dorm.
He leaned lazily against the sofa. “Jianqiu, pull up the feed from his side. Let us see what he is doing with my clothes.”
The system held the highest level of authority in Wu Hui’s hands; he could do anything as long as it did not affect the operation of the small world.
Jianqiu had estimated conservatively that even if Wu Hui wanted to destroy a small world one day for fun, their boss would probably blow up another small world just to set off fireworks for him.
A glow shimmered along the frame of the glasses resting on the table.
“Spying on someone else’s privacy is not very polite, Host.”
“He dares to do it, so why should I not dare to watch? Are you not curious?”
“Loading the CCAV channel for you now.”
The glasses acted as a small projector, casting the scene from Pei Huaiye’s side into mid-air.
The scene showed the college student sniffing the clothes.
Wu Hui and Jianqiu spoke simultaneously: “That is it?”
He had shown such clear interest in Wu Hui, wanting to hug him and “mutually consent,” yet all he did was hold his clothes and sniff them?
He was not even as good as a cat-sniffing enthusiast.
“What do you mean by ‘that is it’?” Wu Hui propped his chin up, his bangs slightly damp. “Jianqiu, I have been wanting to criticize you for a long time. Clear your mind and keep it pure. If I were to delete all the improper content from your system, I am afraid there would be nothing left but ten terabytes.”
Jianqiu retorted: “What did you expect, Host?”
Wu Hui: “Doing the laundry, of course. I would love to see the Crown Prince being transformed into a laundry worker.”
Jianqiu: Heh.
“Stop laughing, your subtitles are drifting into the projector.”
Ten minutes later.
Determined that Pei Huaiye was only sniffing the clothes, Wu Hui waved his hand. “Nothing to see here. Shut it off.”
Jianqiu closed the projection. “In the end, it was a misjudgment. This does not seem like him.”
Wu Hui caught the hint instantly: “Who does he seem like?”
Jianqiu: “Lan Duoduo, the Star Spirit.”
Wu Hui sneered.
He did not expect to get anything useful from Yan Huaimin’s lackey, but he trusted his instincts. Yan Huaimin was definitely not quietly meditating in the Space-Time Alliance.
Thinking back to the scene he had just witnessed, Wu Hui was thoughtful. He had a vague suspicion, but it needed verification.
The next time they met, Pei Huaiye came to the dorm to return the jacket. On the surface, one could not tell he had done anything with it.
“I washed it.”
Wu Hui took it back, put it away, came out, and adjusted his glasses. “I have no class this afternoon. Since you have treated me to so many meals, Senior, let me buy you a cup of coffee.”
Pei Huaiye would certainly not refuse. “Alright.”
The rain had stopped in the morning, leaving puddles scattered on the ground.
Wu Hui was dressed in light colors from head to toe today. As they reached a corner, he stopped and extended his hand toward Pei Huaiye.
“Senior, could you hold my hand and help me across? I am afraid of stepping into the water.”
