Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Past Life (2)
Past Life (2): Expectation.
The beautiful, outspoken woman in front of her, who had draped her jacket over Mo Yingxue without asking, would normally be seen as intrusive.
But in this moment, Mo Yingxue was incredibly cold, feeling like she was locked in an ice cellar, and this sudden warmth was impossible to refuse.
“Thank you.” Mo Yingxue lowered her head, too embarrassed to look at her. She held her phone, hesitating whether to call Wang Ma.
Wang Ma was getting old and often complained of joint pain on rainy days; Mo Yingxue truly didn’t want to make her go out.
Yue Lei was a creature of aesthetics, and she had to admit, she was instantly captivated by the clear and lovely girl in front of her.
She was just passing by, but the moment her peripheral vision caught sight of the girl, her legs took her right to her.
Realizing her actions seemed to have startled the girl—who looked like a soaking wet bunny and was now curled up into an even smaller, low-profile ball—Yue Lei’s heart softened further.
She was determined to prove she wasn’t a bad person, so she tried to continue the conversation casually: “Hey, why aren’t you going back to your dorm? I saw a lot of students rushing back in the rain. Going back to your dorm, changing clothes, drying your hair, and burrowing under the covers must be so comfortable in this weather. You don’t have class, so why stand here shivering?”
“I… I have a painting I haven’t finished yet.” Mo Yingxue initially wanted to say she didn’t live on campus, but then thought it was tedious to share such personal details with a stranger. So, she changed her answer.
“I think your health is more important. It’s pouring outside; your teacher wouldn’t possibly chase you for a painting,” Yue Lei was naturally warm-hearted, especially when meeting a cute, young girl she instantly liked.
She opened her umbrella, waved to Mo Yingxue, and said with a deliberately carefree air: “Come on, I’ll walk you back to your dorm.”
Mo Yingxue wasn’t used to such attentiveness from strangers, but she was even worse at refusing.
She looked down at Yue Lei’s work badge, which hadn’t been dampened by the rain: “Miss Yue, are you here for the campus recruitment today?”
“Yep, I run a small company. This is my first time doing college recruitment, and look at this…” Yue Lei knew that showing a flaw or setback often made it easier to connect with a stranger, so she brought up the less-than-ideal situation.
She held out her hand to catch a few raindrops and sighed dramatically: “Who knew the weather wouldn’t cooperate and insist on raining?”
“It’s okay. The recruitment lasts for several days. As long as it doesn’t keep raining later, it should be fine.” Only after saying this did Mo Yingxue realize she had actually tried to comfort this woman. She looked up at her again before subtly retracting her gaze.
“Let’s go back to the dorm.”
From the moment she saw this girl, Yue Lei was smitten. Although she wanted to continue chatting, the cold wind made her shiver, too. This was clearly not a good time to heat up the conversation.
Mo Yingxue shook her head: “I don’t live in the dorms. Can you please take me to the school’s convenience store? I’ll buy an umbrella.”
Yue Lei completely ignored the girl’s independence and reserve, continuing to mutter: “It’s probably hard to get a taxi when the rain starts like this. Where do you live? If it’s on my way, I can give you a ride.”
Mo Yingxue looked up at her again, then bit her lower lip: “…Tiangong Bie’an (Heaven’s Shore).” It felt too rude to keep giving this warm, gentle woman who was clearly trying to be considerate the cold shoulder. The moment she spoke the name, Yue Lei immediately replied: “It’s on my way! I’ll take you!”
“Wait for me a moment; I need to talk to my staff.” Yue Lei walked a few steps away, delegated tasks to her operations manager, and then returned with the umbrella.
Yue Lei was a visual person. Just the thought of driving this beautiful girl home and getting to steal a few more glances at her made her happy.
She didn’t make any inappropriate moves during the ride. The only sound in the car was soft music covering the noise of the rain outside. It wasn’t until they arrived at the destination and Yue Lei saw someone waiting on the roadside to meet the girl that she finally remembered to exchange names with her.
She assumed that was the end of it—a simple chance encounter. However, a week later, Yue Lei received a call from an unknown number.
“Hello, is this Miss Yue? I was in a rush to get out of the car last time and forgot your jacket was still on me. I’ve had it dry-cleaned. When is a good time for me to return it?”
Yue Lei’s mind quickly caught up, and she chuckled: “Is that Xiao Xue?”
“Ah, yes, it’s me. Mo Yingxue.” Her clear, snowy voice was slightly flustered, and she added: “I forgot to introduce myself just now.”
Yue Lei initially wanted to say she could just use a courier, or that she didn’t even need to return it—it was just a jacket.
But then she had a change of heart: “Add me on WeChat, and I’ll send you the address. It’s almost noon, so why don’t we grab a bite? There’s a restaurant near me with pretty good food.”
And so, the two awkwardly added each other on WeChat and had lunch together.
During the meal, Yue Lei used the same trick, mentioning various work and life frustrations. She secretly watched Mo Yingxue’s reaction to the bizarre stories, seeing her furrow her brow and then desperately try to comfort her.
This confirmed it for her: although this girl looked cold and kept an emotional distance from everything, she was actually very kind and highly empathetic. This made Yue Lei find her even more adorable.
With intentional and unintentional frequency, Yue Lei began asking her out: asking her to secretly observe the live stream room, asking her to accompany her on drives, asking her to go explore new restaurants…
Yue Lei’s endless stream of trivial activities became vibrant life experiences for Mo Yingxue. Mo Yingxue had never had any particularly close friends growing up. Although many people thought well of her—finding her beautiful and friendly—in subsequent interactions, they seemed to be scared off by her icy exterior or simply forgot her when they found more compatible friends.
Only Yue Lei, the natural-born troublemaker, was persistent, constantly asking her to do this or that, tirelessly creating opportunities to meet.
Everything started to change after one particular event. The two had agreed to watch a movie in Mo Yingxue’s private home theater the week before.
They chose the film randomly, but as they watched, they both realized something was unexpected. After escaping everything and breaking free from the shackles of their original families, why did the two girls on the screen suddenly kiss and embrace in the rental apartment…?
After realizing how well their interaction styles fit together, Mo Yingxue would occasionally suggest doing something together.
A few days ago, Mo Yingxue casually mentioned that the sofa cushions in her private theater had been replaced, and Yue Lei immediately wailed that she had never watched a movie in a private theater before.
Mo Yingxue had just seen someone recommend this film online, which prompted her to suggest they watch it together. Who would have thought that, in addition to the “family,” “campus,” “drama,” and “crime” tags, it was also a lesbian film?
At this point, it would have been awkward for either of them to stop the film, so they silently agreed to watch the rest of the movie. Throughout the film, Yue Lei’s heart was racing.
One moment she was inflamed by the passion between the two characters on screen, and the next, she couldn’t stop wondering: What was Mo Yingxue’s intention in bringing me to watch this movie?
Could it be what I’m hoping for?
