Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Past Life (1)
Past Life (1): The Encounter.
“A live streaming company recruiting at a university is just misleading the youth! For goodness sake, let the innocent, bright college students go!”
Hearing Lin Zhixi’s voice on the other end of the phone, Yue Lei curled her lips.
She retorted: “I’m not recruiting streamers! Live streaming companies need technical staff too, and the pay I offer isn’t bad. Stop worrying so much. Besides, isn’t Die starting to be a blogger, sharing her daily life in a wheelchair? Say one more thing, and I’ll report you to her for looking down on people who make a living from the internet.”
“Stop, stop!” Lin Zhixi gritted her teeth, saying bitterly: “Just use your own judgment. I just think it’s better for students’ personal development to find jobs related to their major after graduation.”
“If you put it that way…” Yue Lei paused, then sneered: “Then I think it’s fine for me to recruit female streamers at Southwest Art Academy as well. That school certainly isn’t lacking in people who can sing and dance. Look how pretty they are and how they’re not afraid of the spotlight. They’re perfect for the job.”
“You… you’re on your own!” Lin Zhixi realized the more she talked, the worse things got. Remembering how rarely she won an argument against Yue Lei, she simply gave up and hung up the phone.
This was Yue Lei’s first visit to Southwest Art Academy. She hadn’t gone to university herself, so she never had the chance or the inclination to visit.
She finally managed to get the date for the campus presentation, but the day turned out to be overcast. The sky was grey, and the clouds were heavy with moisture, looking like it could rain at any moment.
Yue Lei contacted the person in charge several times, and they kept assuring her it wouldn’t affect the event. If it really did rain, they would move her booth indoors. Only then did she relax.
She didn’t want to mess up her one rare public appearance! Chunlei Internet Celebrity Incubation Company was finally on the right track, and everyone at the company was excited about the recruitment drive.
Yue Lei knew that even if they didn’t recruit any particularly impressive talent, the girls would be thrilled just knowing their company was participating in a university’s fall recruitment event.
Once they set up their booth, students gradually started to gather, curiously asking what the company did.
After introducing the company a few times, Yue Lei realized it looked a little undignified for the CEO to personally recruit college students. She gave a signal, handed the introduction duties over to the company operations manager, and took a seat in the back.
Watching so many people express interest in her company, with quite a few proactively submitting resumes, Yue Lei maintained a calm exterior but was ecstatic inside.
Sure enough, everyone is gradually realizing that the live streaming industry is a plump piece of meat. Even if they don’t know much about the industry, they want to take a bite.
As noon approached and the rain still hadn’t started, Yue Lei breathed a slight sigh of relief. She gave a quick greeting, picked up her phone, and walked toward the school gate, intending to scout for good food nearby. In the age of the internet, any question could be answered online.
Before long, Yue Lei had finalized a list of must-try restaurants near Southwest Art Academy and arranged for the food to be delivered to the field. She hadn’t bought one meal per person, but there was certainly enough food, and perhaps even enough to feed some of the university students.
After wandering around for a bit, Yue Lei started heading back to the school. As she walked, she suddenly heard an argument.
She turned to look. It seemed a couple from the school was breaking up. The guy was desperately clinging to the girl, crying and shouting, making an utterly ugly scene. The man, originally quite refined, now looked like a shriveled old orange. The girl looked disgusted by him but couldn’t shake him off. Many students passed by, throwing curious glances, but no one intervened.
Yue Lei paid them no mind and charged forward in her high heels. She walked straight toward the couple.
Seeing her aggressive presence—as if to say, no matter what you’re doing, don’t block my path—they both instinctively took a few steps back. The guy’s eyes lit up when the girl retreated toward him. He seized the opportunity, grabbed the girl’s hand, and wouldn’t let go. He kissed her hand repeatedly while pleading: “Jiajia, I promise I’ll prioritize you from now on. Please don’t be angry, okay? We promised never to break up…”
The girl was repulsed by his actions and threw all pretense of decorum away. She violently shook his hand off, frantically wiping her body: “Are you sick? An adult breakup is a notice, not a discussion! Let go of me! We are done talking!”
The guy was completely oblivious and tried to cling to her again. Yue Lei, who had already walked ten meters past them, heard the commotion and frowned repeatedly. She finally couldn’t help herself. She stopped, placed the dozen or so cups of milk tea she was carrying on a long bench, and walked back with a stern face.
She stood in front of the pair and pulled the girl behind her. Already tall, she stood straight and looked down at the boy with a mocking tone: “What are you doing out here in broad daylight? You’ve already broken up. Grabbing her hand again is harassment.”
The man saw that Yue Lei was well-dressed and wearing an ID badge, clearly a successful professional. He didn’t dare retaliate but glared fiercely at the girl behind her: “Jiajia, do you know this woman?”
Wu Jiajia finally felt a sense of relief. She hid behind Yue Lei, not daring to look up, but her voice was firm: “Yes, she’s… she’s my neighbor’s older sister.”
The man wasn’t entirely convinced by her explanation, but he couldn’t figure out why this woman would stand up to protect Wu Jiajia if they were complete strangers. Modern people were all about minding their own business and weren’t so soft-hearted.
He had no choice but to sheepishly salvage the situation: “Fine, you two take care of your business. I’ll come back for you later. Remember, we’re not broken up. I will never break up with you.”
Yue Lei didn’t say anything, simply taking out her phone and snapping a close-up picture of him. She turned to the girl and sneered softly: “Your ex-boyfriend is so pathetic. Your parents were worried when you told them you were dating. Now I think they worried too much. You were right—you two were just messing around. It’s a good thing you broke up, or I’d be laughing at you too. I’ll show them this photo later so the two of them can rest assured.”
The guy was already on his way out. Hearing this, his face flushed red and white. He pointed viciously at the girl behind Yue Lei: “You… you told your parents that about me! I misjudged you! We are really broken up this time!”
Seeing him finally leave, Yue Lei felt the girl behind her let out a massive sigh of relief. She turned around to find that the girl was crying. Yet, she was composed enough to wipe her tears while speaking, sounding utterly relieved: “Thank you. I really don’t know what I would have done… now he should really be too scared to come back…”
Yue Lei pulled out some tissues from her pocket and handed them to her, glancing in the direction the boy left: “Is that a classmate of yours?”
The girl shook her head: “No, he’s from another school.”
“Well, that’s better then; you won’t have to see him all the time. He seems a little unstable. You should protect yourself. Delete his contacts and block him.” Yue Lei smiled, turned to get her milk teas, and didn’t give the incident another thought.
For Wu Jiajia, however, this was a life-changing day. The boy was her first love.
Things were good at first, but their immaturity in various aspects eventually led to the breakup.
She had long accepted the fact, but the boy couldn’t, and he had been harassing her for a long time. She was finally free. There was a lingering sense of loss, but more so, relief and happiness.
During her afternoon class, Mo Yingxue, who sat next to Wu Jiajia, noticed the change in her mood. She asked curiously: “Is he not bothering you anymore? You seem happy today.”
“Yeah!” Wu Jiajia put her head on the desk, her eyes bright: “Thanks to a beautiful older sister who works for some live streaming company.” Mo Yingxue had always been aware of Wu Jiajia’s problem. However, she wasn’t good at handling complex interpersonal relationships. Besides worrying with her and trying to stick close to Wu Jiajia, she didn’t know what else to do. Now that Wu Jiajia was finally in a better mood, and it seemed the harassment was over, she finally relaxed.
Wu Jiajia tugged on Mo Yingxue’s sleeve: “Let’s go check out that company later. That sister was so cool and nice. It would be great to work with her.”
“Okay,” Mo Yingxue nodded and agreed.
She had no intention of working for a live streaming company, so while Wu Jiajia was consulting at the booth, Mo Yingxue just stood nearby, neither getting closer nor showing much curiosity. Wu Jiajia was genuinely eager to work for the company, asking question after question at the booth, not giving up even when they told her they weren’t looking for art students right now.
Just as they were chatting enthusiastically, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky, and the rain, which had been holding back for a long time, suddenly began to fall in heavy drops.
The rain quickly intensified, and those without umbrellas scattered. Mo Yingxue was quickly separated from Wu Jiajia. Unable to find her, she also headed toward the teaching building to take shelter.
However, the sky seemed to have cracked open. She waited for over an hour, but the rain showed no sign of slowing down. She hadn’t expected the rain when she left the house, and she was dressed thinly. The wet, cold clothes clung to her, making her feel even worse. She sneezed several times, shivering as she prepared to call Wang Ma to come pick her up.
Suddenly, a warmth enveloped her.
She turned around to see a beautiful woman placing a jacket over her shoulders. Yue Lei blinked at the startled and confused girl in front of her: “Hi, I saw you were about to catch a cold, so I took the liberty of lending you my jacket. You’re not angry, are you?”
