Pretending to Be a Submissive O: My Fiancee Is a Little Pup - Chapter 14
The neon lights on both sides of the road flickered, adding a touch of charm to the mysterious night sky. The wind brushing past the car window carried a hint of chill, yet the palms of Ji Yaran’s hands were seeping with more and more sweat.
“Driver, please go a bit faster,” she urged, staring at the car ahead that was about to vanish from her sight.
The moment the words left her mouth, the traffic light turned red.
“Miss, it’s a red light, I can’t go any faster,” the driver couldn’t help but complain.
He had originally planned to head home after this last trip, but this young girl had insisted he follow the car in front the moment she got in. He had no idea what her motive was, and if she hadn’t been willing to pay extra, he would have preferred to go home and rest.
The red light lasted for fifteen seconds, and by then, Xue Yan’s car was long gone. However, based on the direction the car was traveling, Ji Yaran could roughly guess that Xue Yan had returned to the production hotel.
The driver accelerated to catch up throughout the journey. When the car pulled over opposite the hotel, Ji Yaran indeed spotted Xue Yan’s vehicle.
“Driver, I’ll get off here.” Ji Yaran took several bills out of her wallet and told him to keep the change before pushing the door open and stepping out.
She followed Xue Yan into the hotel and watched as he supported Tang Rui by the arm. Tang Rui appeared to be semi-conscious, looking as if she were drunk.
She watched until Xue Yan took her up to the third floor, his arm around her waist as he prepared to enter his own room.
“Teacher Xue, what do you think you’re doing?”
The hallway was empty and quiet, making Ji Yaran’s voice sound exceptionally clear.
Xue Yan clearly hadn’t expected someone to appear suddenly. His expression shifted slightly, and his mind raced to find an excuse. “Tang Rui is drunk, I’m just bringing her back to rest…”
Ji Yaran glanced at the room number on the door and reminded him, “Teacher Xue, this isn’t Teacher Tang’s room, is it?”
Xue Yan broke into a cold sweat inwardly, offering a strained smile. “I couldn’t find Tang Rui’s room card, so I thought I’d bring her to my room first.”
“Then why don’t you leave her to me,” Ji Yaran walked forward and, without leaving room for argument, took Tang Rui’s arm from him. “Men and women should keep a respectful distance. If Teacher Tang spends the night in your room and people find out, it might be bad for her reputation. It’s better if I handle it, it’s more convenient between members of the same sex anyway.”
“This…” Xue Yan’s face darkened, and he became momentarily indecisive. Success was right within his grasp, yet Ji Yaran had appeared out of nowhere to interfere. If he failed this time, he didn’t know when the next opportunity would arise. How could he be willing to let go?
“Teacher Xue, is there some sort of inconvenience?” Seeing that he wouldn’t let go, Ji Yaran narrowed her eyes. “Or are you afraid I can’t carry her and want me to call more people to help?”
There was a subtle threat in her words. Xue Yan steeled himself and finally let go, saying with extreme hypocrisy, “Then… I’ll leave Tang Rui in your care.”
“Don’t mention it, Teacher Xue,” Ji Yaran smiled as she propped Tang Rui up, swiping her own room card at the same time. “You should get some rest early, too.”
Xue Yan was still the male lead of this drama. Even though she knew exactly what he was plotting, it wasn’t wise to tear off the mask and have a fallout in a fit of rage.
Back in the room, Ji Yaran helped the intoxicated Tang Rui inside. She heard Song Qingxue’s footsteps coming from the direction of the bathroom.
“Sister, you’re ba…”
Before she could finish, Song Qingxue saw the person she had brought back.
“Sister, why is Tang Rui with you?”
“She might be drunk,” Ji Yaran didn’t have time to explain more as she laid the woman on the bed. “Qingxue, go pour some warm water for her.”
Without a moment’s delay, Song Qingxue poured a glass of water and helped Ji Yaran prop Tang Rui up so she could feed her the water.
Tang Rui clearly hadn’t had any alcohol that evening, yet she was in a daze. Fortunately, the danger was averted. After resting on Ji Yaran’s bed for a while, she regained some consciousness, and her tightly closed eyes slowly fluttered open.
“Mm…”
“Teacher Tang, you’re awake?” Ji Yaran quickly helped her sit up. “How do you feel?”
“Where is this…” Tang Rui’s voice was somewhat raspy. She propped herself up with her arms, her fingers pressing against her temples. It took a long time for her to clear her head and recognize the person in front of her. “Ji… Yaran…?”
“Teacher Tang, are you alright?” Ji Yaran reached out to feel her forehead. Fortunately, her temperature was normal.
“Yes, just a bit dizzy…” Tang Rui looked around and realized the room’s decor was very familiar. “Is this the production hotel?”
“Don’t worry, this is my room. Xue Yan tried to take you to his room just now, but luckily I spotted you in time,” Ji Yaran explained.
Tang Rui lowered her eyes, pursed her pale lips, and spoke coldly, “I knew he wouldn’t let it go just like that…”
“Teacher Tang, what exactly happened? Weren’t you with Xiao Rongrong?”
Tang Rui pulled back the covers and sat up. After taking a few deep breaths, she said in a low voice, “After I got in the car, Xiao Rongrong suddenly said she left something at the restaurant. She got out to go back and get it, telling Xue Yan to drop me off at the hotel first. After that, I lost consciousness…”
“Does that mean… Xiao Rongrong and Xue Yan are in cahoots?”
“I’m not sure,” Tang Rui said grimly. “They’ve been dating privately for a long time. I thought that even if Xue Yan usually had wandering hands, at least Xiao Rongrong would keep him in check…”
Tang Rui’s voice was raspy, and a dull pain suddenly hit her chest. She couldn’t help but clutch her heart, coughing heavily.
“Teacher Tang, take it slow,” Ji Yaran reached out to soothe her back. Once her condition stabilized, she handed her the water glass. “Drink some water first.”
“Thank you.” Tang Rui took the glass and moistened her throat.
“Do you remember how you passed out?”
“I’m not sure,” the memory brought on a fresh headache for Tang Rui. “I didn’t eat much tonight, I only drank a bit of water…”
“Is it possible there was some kind of knockout drug in the car?”
“I don’t think so,” Song Qingxue spoke up. “The car is a confined space. If that were the case, he wouldn’t have been able to escape the effects himself.”
“Yes,” Tang Rui agreed, siding with Song Qingxue’s logic. “Even if he had a way to do that, he’s likely already destroyed the evidence. We have no way to investigate his car.”
“So, what do you plan to do next?”
Tang Rui shook her head. “I don’t have evidence of him framing me. Pointing the finger at him rashly would only backfire on me.”
Xue Yan had a massive fanbase. Without proof, the spearhead of public opinion would only turn against Tang Rui.
At that moment, Song Qingxue suddenly spoke, “I don’t think… there’s any need to rush.”
Both of their gazes landed on her face.
Tang Rui frowned slightly. “What do you mean…”
Song Qingxue said, “I don’t think he will let this go. Although we don’t have evidence now, since we know his goal, perhaps… we can find a way to slowly bait him into giving us proof.”
“But Xue Yan is the male lead. If we wait until the show wraps up to expose this, the whole crew will be affected. The producers and investors might even become dissatisfied with Tang Rui because of it.”
“I don’t think it will take that long,” Song Qingxue looked at Tang Rui, speaking meaningfully. “On the premise that—Sister Tang is willing to cooperate.”
Tang Rui frowned, meeting her gaze. After a moment of silence, she said, “I can cooperate.”
