Pregnant with My Late Husband’s Child - Chapter 5
“You look less and less like your mother.”
Although both of them harbored a grand wish to never see each other again, reality was harsh. Not only could they not avoid each other, but they also had to get engaged and married.
The engagement and wedding ceremonies were both held at the St. Sophia Auditorium in the Yas District. Prior to these events, Li Yixing and Feng Zhao had taken their wedding photos at the same venue.
It was a very simple photograph. Li Yixing, wearing the deep blue Alliance uniform, stood beside Feng Zhao, who was dressed in military ceremonial attire. Neither of them wore any expression. Sunlight streamed in through the auditorium’s skylights, casting a glow upon them. Behind them, various sculptures and deities carved into the walls of the St. Sophia Auditorium were visible, making the photograph look like an oil painting from the Middle Ages of Old Earth.
This photo had been hung on the wall of their new home in advance, a display of their “affection.”
Seven days before the wedding date, Li Yixing was summoned back by Stan Davis via a communication call.
Li Yixing exited the Security Department building, boarded his aircraft, and set the destination to the Green Leaf Peninsula in the Yas District.
The “Green Leaf Peninsula” is a large residential area in the Yas District, where the residents are either rich or powerful. Li Yixing had lived there for four years after turning twelve.
The aircraft flew slowly toward the Green Leaf Peninsula. Li Yixing sat quietly in the pilot’s seat. Through the communication channel came the voice of Stan Davis: “Regardless of the circumstances, this marriage must not go wrong. It concerns whether I can succeed as the Alliance Chief Executive later, so Yixing, I have wronged you.”
Li Yixing listened to these words with a blank expression, yet his verbal response was dutiful and polite: “Of course, Father. This is what I should do.”
Stan’s laughter emerged from the channel: “Good child.”
“Come back for a family dinner. Your mother and brother miss you very much,” he said. “I do, too.”
Li Yixing let out an abrupt laugh and replied: “I am very glad you miss me. I will be there as soon as possible.”
As he spoke, the communication channel fell into silence. Li Yixing stood up, retrieved a soothing agent with a red label from the emergency medical kit inside the aircraft, aligned it with the vein on his arm, and expertly injected it.
Alliance soothing agents are divided into military and civilian types. There are twenty military versions and six civilian ones, labeled in red and yellow respectively. The agent Li Yixing used was Type F, designed to stabilize emotions and provide sedation.
Outside the window, half of the Yas District came into view. In this most prosperous district on Nuwa Star, eighty percent of the work is performed by artificial intelligence. The buildings are arranged in close succession, resembling a massive forest of steel.
Once one lands on the ground, it becomes clear that this steel forest is filled with flowers and greenery. Every flower and every blade of grass is meticulously pruned into the perfect shape, like some rigid operational formula.
Within the Green Leaf Peninsula, robots on routine patrol traversed the cobblestone paths. In the flower beds, mechanical honeybees were pollinating the flourishing blossoms, while numerous gardening robots were busy trimming the branches and leaves of the plants.
Li Yixing walked through the plaza of the Green Leaf Peninsula. In the center of the plaza stood a massive statue. The statue depicted a woman in military uniform, holding a sword pointed upward. She was Zhou Ruohuai, the founder of the Alliance’s New Era and the creator of the Alliance’s First Army, the Gladius Legion. Her statues are spread across the five major star systems of the Alliance. The one on the Green Leaf Peninsula was merely a small one; the largest stood in the Angel Hall Cemetery in the Yas District.
However, it is said that after the second generation, none of her descendants have joined the Alliance political scene or the military.
Behind the Green Leaf Peninsula plaza lies the residential area. Li Yixing navigated the familiar paths and turned into the deepest section of the peninsula.
It was very quiet here, even the calls of birds were sparse. Li Yixing arrived in front of a villa, passed through the iris verification and routine security check, and stepped slowly inside.
A very long driveway came into view, flanked by lush green lawns where robots were mowing the grass. Additionally, a three-tiered fountain bubbled, and from time to time, fish with brilliant, iridescent scales leapt from the water.
Li Yixing entered the villa under the guidance of the smart butler.
His adoptive father, Stan Davis, was wearing casual clothing, leaning on the sofa, and reading books on heavy mecha structural theory in a measured manner. His adoptive mother, Luo Taylor, was complaining to Stan Davis about their son, Los.
“Los has really suffered a great injustice recently,” Luo Taylor complained incessantly. “Have you seen what they wrote about him on the Starnet and the Yas Evening News?”
“Things like him being unable to get his adoptive brother’s love, or him being an obstruction to a pair of lovers, or him not getting Li Yixing’s attention because he isn’t as good as Feng Zhao…”
She did not seem to notice that Li Yixing had arrived. “They have made him sound so terrible! Besides, he could find any kind of husband or wife he wanted! He is nowhere near as bad as the Starnet claims! And yet, you still punished him with confinement!”
Stan Davis grew impatient with his wife’s complaints. He placed his book on the coffee table and said unhappily: “Who told him to go and disturb Yixing’s affairs! He was even stupid enough not to notice that the media was right there.”
After saying this, he noticed Li Yixing standing not far away, so he waved his hand, signaling Li Yixing to sit down: “You’re here. Sit.”
Li Yixing sat down at a distance from his adoptive father. Luo Taylor seemed unwilling to see this adopted son; seeing Li Yixing sit down, she immediately stood up and walked away.
“I’m going to see Los,” she said. “He hasn’t eaten all day.”
Li Yixing watched his adoptive mother go upstairs and politely asked: “Is Los alright?”
“He is in confinement, on a hunger strike,” Davis said, unconcerned. “But I guarantee he won’t disrupt your wedding.”
Li Yixing naturally believed Davis’s guarantee; after all, this marriage concerned Davis’s promotion. The three Alliance Chief Executives are elected every seven years, and now it was nearing the time for elections. Stan Davis was eyeing the position of Alliance Chief Executive.
Currently, besides Audrey White, the other two executives are Kaman Taylor and Feng Tingsong. Kaman Taylor and Davis’s wife, Luo Taylor, are distant cousins, but despite this, their interest connection is not solid enough; after all, Kaman Taylor stopped associating with the family long ago, and even if he knew he had a distant cousin married to Stan Davis, he likely would not take action.
Audrey White, as an executive who rose step by step from the masses, has always maintained a neutral stance.
Therefore, Feng Tingsong is the key. He is not only an executive but also has close personal ties with Kaman Taylor. Gaining his support is of paramount importance.
An election is not a small matter. Although Stan Davis has considerable prestige in the Alliance military, he still lacks standing in the political arena. Elections require support and massive promotion; naturally, the more solid the backing, the better. Even if he could not become a Chief Executive, he could at least enter the Alliance Council and participate in major political decisions.
That is why Stan Davis acted as a go-between, binding Li Yixing and Feng Zhao together.
Li Yixing picked up a glass and took a sip, but after it touched his lips, he realized he was drinking iced rum.
The taste of the rum was sweet and rich, but it triggered a sense of nausea in Li Yixing. Fortunately, the effect of the Type F soothing agent had already kicked in, and the nauseous feeling lasted for only an instant before being suppressed and disappearing within his body.
Stan Davis glanced at his watch. It was 6:00 PM.
It was time to prepare dinner, and the pre-programmed household robots became busy, heading into the kitchen to prepare the meal.
He turned to look at Li Yixing. The young Security Department Chief sat upright, his expression revealing not a single trace of emotion, calm and stable like a carved stone statue.
“You look less and less like your mother.”
After a long time, Stan Davis suddenly spoke: “You looked more like her when you were a child. As you grow older, you look less and less like her.”
Upon hearing this, Li Yixing sneered internally, but his verbal response was full of regret: “Perhaps Father’s genes are more dominant.”
Dinner was soon prepared. Li Yixing sat down promptly, finished his meal as quickly as possible, and then bid farewell to his adoptive parents.
When he boarded his aircraft, the time had reached 7:32 PM.
Li Yixing sat in the pilot’s seat, feeling a sudden chill.
He sank into the leather driver’s seat and closed his eyes. A moment later, his thin eyelids lifted gently, revealing his obsidian-like eyes.
Directly in front of Li Yixing was the window of the aircraft, which vaguely reflected his appearance.
His complexion was somewhat pale, his facial contours were sharp, his eyebrows were thin and long and slightly raised, his eyes were deep, the lines were smooth, and the corners were narrow and long, with the ends drooping slightly. His pitch-black eyelashes were dense, casting gray shadows beneath his eyes. Additionally, his chin was lean and his lips were very thin, devoid of any color. This made him appear sharp and cold-hearted.
Indeed, he did not look much like his biological mother. His biological mother, Li Yunqi, had softer contours, round eyes, and a very affectionate and gentle temperament. However, he perfectly inherited Li Yunqi’s black hair and black eyes, which made him quite prominent in a crowd.
Li Yixing stared at his own face for two minutes, then pulled out the pocket watch kept against his chest, which contained the portrait of his biological mother, Li Yunqi, and his biological father, Ge Na.
A faint light glimmered on the edge of the pocket watch. Li Yixing looked at it for a while before closing it.
The aircraft pulled into the garden outside Li Yixing’s residence and automatically moved to the parking space after Li Yixing stepped out.
587 had been waiting at home for a long time. Li Yixing entered the door, took off his coat, and handed it to 587.
Three hours had passed since he used the soothing agent, and the effect had worn off.
The familiar sense of nausea welled up again. Li Yixing covered his mouth, walked quickly into the bathroom, hunched over, and vomited everything he had eaten today!
