After My Flash Marriage with the Movie Queen - Chapter 29
Because she wanted to surprise Shi Nanbei, Zhao Xunyin crept quietly to her desk. As she got closer, she finally heard what her wife was reciting—an endless string of technical terms she’d never heard before or couldn’t even begin to
understand. For a moment, she almost forgot—she had married a top student.
Lowering her gaze, Zhao Xunyin looked at the girl bent over her books, and she had to admit: Shi Nanbei was utterly charming like this.
The appeal of someone younger was always hard to resist—especially when that someone was beautiful, sweet-tempered, and studious. Even an “almost-auntie” like Zhao Xunyin wasn’t immune.
Most of the time, when Shi Nanbei was with her, she was either pure and innocent or mischievous to the point of madness. You could never guess what she’d say next—and eight times out of ten, whatever came out of her mouth would be enough to make Zhao Xunyin’s chest ache from suppressed laughter or frustration.
Age had mellowed her temper, though. Her tolerance wasn’t what it used to be, and while she often wanted to smack that mischievous little wife of hers, she couldn’t bring herself to scold or hit her. What else could she do but spoil her?
She stood behind Shi Nanbei for a long while, watching the girl study with such focus that she didn’t even notice someone standing there. A playful thought crept into Zhao Xunyin’s mind. She could already imagine the look of surprise that would flash across Shi Nanbei’s face when she saw her.
Cough. After all, she was a movie queen, a big star! She’d flown thousands of miles from Shanghai just to see her little wife—surely even the most mischievous of girls would be moved to tears by that!
The thought made her grin in anticipation.
Putting on a straight face, Zhao Xunyin pressed her index and middle finger together and knocked lightly on the desk. The girl looked up, blinking dazedly at her with those damp, glassy eyes.
“This beautiful young lady,” Zhao Xunyin said, removing her mask and sunglasses with a faint, teasing smile, “would I be lucky enough to invite you to dinner?”
As soon as Shi Nanbei saw who it was, she didn’t disappoint—she jumped up in delight and threw herself into Zhao Xunyin’s arms. “You’re back?”
Although Shi Nanbei wasn’t small, Zhao Xunyin was still a woman, and that sudden pounce nearly sent her stumbling. She managed to catch her balance after a couple of steps back, wrapping her arms tightly around the girl. Feeling the warmth and enthusiasm in her embrace, Zhao Xunyin’s heart melted completely.
“My wife ignored me for so long,” she murmured in mock grievance, “I had no choice but to come back myself.”
Shi Nanbei’s cheeks flushed. She ducked her head, mumbling weakly against Zhao Xunyin’s chest, “I didn’t ignore you. I was just busy studying for finals.”
It was only a casual tease on Zhao Xunyin’s part, but hearing her little wife’s earnest, apologetic tone made her heart go soft all over again. She stroked Shi Nanbei’s hair gently, her voice tender in a way she didn’t know she was capable of.
“Alright, I know you’re busy. I wasn’t really upset.”
Then, with a coaxing smile, she added, “But since I’ve come all the way back just to see my wife, wouldn’t my dear wife do me the honor of having dinner with me?”
The movie queen’s tone was so humble, her posture so endearingly low, that even the hardest heart would have melted.
But, a college girl had her burdens.
Shi Nanbei was about to agree when it hit her—she still had a pile of notes to review for her finals!
If she went out with Zhao Xunyin tonight, she’d definitely end up going back to Longquan Villa afterward and recalling that phone call a few nights ago—“Does Your Majesty miss her concubine’s body?” she nearly shivered.
Ahem. She was the “True Dragon Empress,” after all. She must not succumb to temptation!
Love may be sweet, but the empire must come first.
If she went home with Zhao Xunyin tonight, she knew exactly what would happen—she wouldn’t be back until morning, and she’d lose an entire night of study time!
But, how could she say no?
Zhao Xunyin was so busy, she must’ve rearranged her whole schedule to come back just to see her. How could she possibly turn her down?
Ah, what a dilemma!
Love or academics—the eternal struggle of every medical student during finals week.
She twisted herself into such knots that her stomach began to ache.
So, this is what ancient emperors felt like, she thought miserably. Torn between their beloved concubines and the empire.
“What’s wrong? Is it inconvenient?” Zhao Xunyin asked gently, seeing her hesitation.
“Not really, it’s just, I still have a lot to study.” Shi Nanbei lowered her head, feeling a wave of guilt wash over her.
Zhao Xunyin had flown across the country just to see her, and she couldn’t even spare an evening meal? What kind of wife was she?
“Are you that busy? You’ve lost weight,” Zhao Xunyin said softly.
“It’s normal during finals.”
Sensing the girl’s guilt, Zhao Xunyin smiled understandingly. “You know, I’ve never eaten at Sichuan University’s cafeteria before. How about we just eat there together?”
Shi Nanbei blinked, realizing what Zhao Xunyin was doing—meeting her halfway—and her heart warmed instantly. She hugged her tighter. “Okay, let’s go.”
Of course, given Zhao Xunyin’s celebrity status, eating in the main cafeteria wasn’t really an option. Shi Nanbei suggested one of the private dining rooms on the third floor instead, and Zhao Xunyin nodded, tugging her cap lower.
She didn’t care where they ate—as long as it was with Shi Nanbei.
While the two of them were wrapped up in their sweet little world, Zhao Xunyin’s poor assistant was suffering in silence. She stayed on high alert the whole time, scanning the surroundings like a hawk in case anyone recognized the star
and turned it into breaking news.
Although the buzz about Zhao Xunyin’s sudden marriage had finally cooled down, the public still didn’t know who her mysterious spouse was. That curiosity alone was enough to keep every paparazzi on edge.
So, watching her boss—her very famous boss—risk exposure just to spoil her wife left the assistant full of resentment.
I work overtime, barely sleep, and you two have the audacity to feed me dog food right in front of my face? Do you know how lonely I am?
But perhaps the heavens took pity on her, because the trio managed to make it to the cafeteria without being noticed.
The assistant was just about to exhale in relief when disaster struck.
Before she could even take a sip of water, Shi Nanbei’s roommate, Wu Lili—the notorious fangirl—had already spotted them.
Her first words over the phone were a shriek:
“Shi Nanbei! Are you with Zhao Xunyin?”
Shi Nanbei froze. Guilt instantly hit her like a wave. She’d never told Wu Lili about the marriage—partly because she’d seen firsthand how obsessed her roommate was with Zhao Xunyin.
For three years, she’d heard Wu Lili declare, “Nothing and no one can stop my love for Zhao Xunyin!”
Sigh. Her head already felt a little green.
Add to that the nightmare she’d once had about Wu Lili and the interrogation that followed from her roommates, she had genuine trauma now.
At this point, the shade of green didn’t matter anymore. What mattered was finding a way to make Wu Lili stop hating her.
“How did you know?” Shi Nanbei asked, startled. After living together for so long, she’d never realized Wu Lili had such terrifying detective skills.
Wu Lili’s tone on the other end was oddly gleeful. “Because I hacked the airline database, tracked Zhao Xunyin’s flight, and saw that she landed in Chengdu two hours ago.”
Shi Nanbei: “…”
What won’t you do for your idol?
“Isn’t that a bit much?” Shi Nanbei asked hesitantly. “Celebrities need privacy too.”
“My bad,” Wu Lili admitted immediately. “I got carried away. I forgot she’s your wife now.”
Shi Nanbei: “…”
Then why are you calling me right now?
To brag about how green my head looks?
“Nanbei” Wu Lili suddenly whined pitifully, “for the sake of my years of unrequited love, please—just let me meet her once!”
Shi Nanbei: “…”
You’re confessing your undying love for my wife right in front of me—do you have no shame?
Seeing her wife’s expression twist in pain, Zhao Xunyin leaned closer, concerned. “What’s wrong?”
Before Shi Nanbei could answer, Wu Lili’s shrill voice exploded from the phone:
“Wait—what did I just hear? Was that my wife’s voice?! IT WAS, WASN’T IT?”
Shi Nanbei: “…”
What the hell is going on here?
Why does my head feel so vividly green right now?
