- Chapter 28 - So What If You’re Good at Studying?
With no roommates around to accompany her, Shi Nanbei had no choice but to head alone to the morgue, clutching her books tightly. She spent the next three to four hours memorizing lines and notes there.
When Zhao Xunyin finally finished work, she called her and asked, “What are you doing?”
“I’m studying,” Shi Nanbei replied sweetly, holding her phone. “Finals are coming up soon.”
“So early? You’ve already started reviewing?” Zhao Xunyin, who’d never gone to college herself, asked curiously.
“Of course! Medical school is so hard,” Shi Nanbei said, her voice softening into a playful whine. “There’s so much to memorize.”
“You’re all by yourself?”
“Yeah. None of my roommates want to study with me,” she complained, pouting a little as she tattled to her wife.
Hearing that, Zhao Xunyin couldn’t help but laugh, her eyes curving into crescents. She hadn’t seen Shi Nanbei for a while, and already she was missing her. “Then how about we video call?”
“Really?” Shi Nanbei’s eyes lit up with excitement.
So Zhao Xunyin sat in the nanny van and called her through video. But before she could even say something sweet, she froze—something about Shi Nanbei’s background didn’t feel right.
Why were all the beds behind her covered with white sheets? And why was the lighting so pale, so eerie?
Zhao Xunyin’s expression darkened. “Where are you?”
“In the school morgue!” Shi Nanbei answered innocently, her tone as pure as snow. “It’s really quiet here—perfect for studying. No one disturbs me.”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
Zhao Xunyin: “!”
Sure, no one’s there—but aren’t you afraid of ghosts?
Without another word, Zhao Xunyin’s face stiffened, and she hung up the call on the spot.
Shi Nanbei, completely clueless, texted her a moment later:
Nanbei the Brave: What’s wrong? Why did you hang up so suddenly?
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
What’s wrong? What’s wrong? You seriously don’t know what’s wrong?
Zhao Xunyin stared at her phone, trying to make sense of her wife’s thought process. Up front, her assistant—who had overheard everything—was clutching the steering wheel, nearly bursting into laughter.
Studying in the morgue, truly a genius move.
Thank god Zhao Xunyin was thirty-four. If she was a few years younger, she’d have been scared to death by now.
Talent. Pure talent.
“You’re kidding me! Your little wife’s that hardcore?” An He burst out laughing after hearing Zhao Xunyin’s story. “Are all med students this fearless? Hahaha—studying in the morgue, oh my god, that’s comedy gold!”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
“Could you not laugh?” she said through gritted teeth. “Do you think I told you this so you could make fun of me?”
An He was already crying from laughter. “Sorry, sorry, I’ll stop in a second. But seriously—why’d you hang up? It’s not like she was showing you a corpse. You totally broke her heart!”
Zhao Xunyin scowled. She couldn’t help it—just thinking about that pale background made her skin crawl.
And she’d complained that her roommates wouldn’t study with her?
What normal person would go to the morgue to study?
Her face darkened. “How about you video call her next time, then?”
“Me? No, thank you!” An He waved her hands in panic. “That’s your wife, not mine!”
Zhao Xunyin sighed deeply. She really couldn’t understand her little wife sometimes. Why did she always do such abnormal things?
An He, still teasing, said, “Come on, admit it—you’re a bit disappointed, right? You thought you married a cute little wife who’d look up to you, but turns out she’s tougher than you are. Our big movie queen can’t even handle her!”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
“Shut up.”
Could she stop talking for five seconds?
Meanwhile, online discussions about Zhao Xunyin’s sudden marriage were still buzzing. Her PR team’s chosen approach was to let things die down naturally. In the fast-moving world of the internet, people’s attention spans were notoriously short—a major headline today could be forgotten by tomorrow morning.
It was a smart move, especially since Zhao Xunyin still didn’t want to reveal who she’d married.
And sure enough, after half a month, the topic finally cooled off.
By then, it was June—summer’s beginning.
For med student Shi Nanbei, June meant only one thing: final exams.
They say if you choose the right major, every semester feels like another college entrance exam—and medicine, naturally, was at the top of that list.
Whenever Shi Nanbei thought back to her once lofty ambition of “saving lives” when she’d chosen this major, she could only groan in regret.
Medical school really was brain-breaking.
As soon as June started, she dove straight into review mode. The exams lasted two full weeks. Time might have seemed sufficient, but in reality, it never was. Once the review period began, Shi Nanbei practically lived in the library—except for meals and sleep, she did nothing but study.
Forget gaming—she barely had time to check WeChat.
Their situation had completely flipped: now, it was Zhao Xunyin who had free time and couldn’t reach her wife.
Knowing that long absences were bad for newlyweds, Zhao Xunyin finally wrapped up her work and, without telling anyone—not even her manager—booked a flight to Chengdu to surprise Shi Nanbei.
When her assistant, who had returned earlier, picked her up at the airport, Zhao Xunyin took the VIP exit. There were no fans waiting—her trip had been that sudden.
“Head to Sichuan University’s West China Medical School,” she instructed after getting into the car.
She hadn’t told Shi Nanbei she was coming, so of course, her wife had no idea.
Which led to this: a famous actress, newly married and full of anticipation, flying thousands of miles to surprise her wife—only to find her calls going unanswered.
For the thirteenth time.
“Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable.” The same robotic voice echoed again and again.
Even Zhao Xunyin, usually composed, couldn’t hide her irritation anymore.
Wasn’t this exactly what happened the last time she’d come to Chengdu?
The assistant glanced at her expression through the rearview mirror and carefully asked, “Should I go look for Miss Shi?”
Zhao Xunyin gave her a long, expressionless look. “You think you can find her?”
The assistant froze. “Okay, maybe not.”
Wow. That tone was so sour.
“She’s probably in the library,” the assistant added quickly. “She studies there a lot. Her grades are excellent.”
Zhao Xunyin’s voice was cold. “Then why isn’t she answering her phone?”
“Maybe she’s concentrating,” the assistant said gently. “She really does study hard.”
She thought that explanation was reasonable—until she heard the movie queen’s frosty reply:
“So, what you’re saying is, I didn’t study hard when I was in school?”
What, studying hard gives you the right to ignore her?
She was a double Best Actress, for crying out loud!
Wasn’t she worth more than a few textbooks?
The assistant: “…”
Ma’am, you didn’t even finish college. You know this.
“Forget it,” Zhao Xunyin muttered after a pause. “Let’s go find her together.”
So, wearing a baseball cap, mask, and oversized sunglasses, Zhao Xunyin got out of the car and followed her assistant into the library to find the little brat who wouldn’t answer her calls.
Hmph. Nothing about visiting Shi Nanbei’s campus ever went the way she imagined.
The assistant clearly knew the library layout well. She led Zhao Xunyin straight to the second floor, turned a few corners, and stopped at a quiet nook—where a small mountain of books surrounded a petite girl completely absorbed in her notes.
At the sight of her, the sourness that had been brewing in Zhao Xunyin’s chest vanished instantly. Her tiredness from the long flight seemed to dissolve into the air.
She stood there, watching that familiar silhouette mouthing words from her textbook, and her heart softened completely.
That girl—this diligent, silly, fearless girl—was her wife.
The one fate had led her back to, after all these years.
