- Chapter 19 - Yun Ran Goes Missing
Ding-a-ling…
Jiang Biechen was just about to speak when he was interrupted by the sound of his phone ringing. He pulled it out and saw it was a call from Zhong Fan, whom he had arranged to stay at the hospital to look after the old man. Jiang Biechen was puzzled what could Zhong Fan need from him at this hour?
He pressed answer. Before Jiang Biechen could ask, Zhong Fan’s voice came through. “Young Master, I just walked out of the restroom and bumped into three doctors acting suspiciously. They were pushing a gurney out of room 508. As I passed by, something on the gurney moved. I suspect it’s a person. Should I stop them?”
“Room 508?” Jiang Biechen frowned. “Isn’t that the room next to the old man Jiusi hit? Who lives in there?”
“A forty-year-old middle-aged man named Yun Zechuan.”
“Yun Zechuan? Why does that name sound so familiar?” Jiang Biechen pondered, his brow furrowed.
Lin Jiusi, standing to the side, suddenly spoke up: “I know who that is. It’s Lu Yun… oh, I mean Yun Su’s biological father. His father’s name seems to be Yun Zechuan, and he is staying at the Canglan City First People’s Hospital.” As Lin Jiusi spoke, he clicked his tongue in wonder. “This Yun Zechuan is truly unfortunate. He spent eighteen years raising another family’s child with the best of everything, while his own biological son was suffering for eighteen years in the foster home. In the end, he even raised an ungrateful wolf.” Lin Jiusi rubbed his chin, his eyes sparkling with gossip, letting out an occasional tsk-tsk sound. “These father and son… they really are unlucky together.”
Jiang Biechen listened and then withdrew his gaze. On the other end, Zhong Fan had also heard Lin Jiusi’s loud voice. “Young Master, should I stop them?”
“Yes, intercept them and bring the person back,” Jiang Biechen replied without hesitation.
Zhong Fan acknowledged the order and hung up, immediately notifying the bodyguards outside to stop the three doctors.
Lin Jiusi asked, feeling uneasy: “Will it be alright for Brother Zhong to go alone?”
Jiang Biechen gave him a look and turned to leave Bibo Lake. “What could happen?” Zhong Fan wasn’t alone over there.
…
After leaving Bibo Lake, Yun Su headed straight home. It was already 2:30 AM when he arrived. Yun Ran was not at home, and clearly, she hadn’t returned at noon either. Yun Su found some clothes, took a shower, and lay down on his bed, picking up the Energy-Storing Stone to gaze at it.
A moment later, he sat up and began to absorb the spiritual energy within the stone. He had cultivated for several hours by Bibo Lake that day, yet his cultivation remained at Level Two Qi Refining. The spiritual energy stored in this Energy-Storing Stone might help him break through to Level Three, and if he added the Pei Yuan Pill he had refined at the An residence, reaching Level Four should be no problem. Although the stone was water-attributed, spiritual energy itself had no attributes; any cultivator of any spiritual root could use it. It was only when arranging arrays or refining artifacts that the material’s attributes were considered.
Thinking this, Yun Su pulled out the Pei Yuan Pill and tossed it into his mouth. Even if it was just a common Pei Yuan Pill, the effects were barely sufficient for his current needs. The pill melted almost instantly upon hitting his tongue, and Yun Su felt a warm current flow from his throat through his limbs and bones. Yun Su immediately sat cross-legged and placed the Energy-Storing Stone before him.
Immersed in cultivation, Yun Su lost all sense of the passage of time; two days slipped by in the blink of an eye.
When Yun Su finally absorbed the last of the energy from the stone and opened his eyes: “Level Four Qi Refining.”
He looked at the Energy-Storing Stone in his hand, which was still dark; the green veins were now so faint they were almost invisible. The spiritual energy stored within had been exhausted. Thinking of his future cultivation needs, Yun Su’s previous sense of joy vanished instantly. The energy in this small stone had taken over a hundred years to accumulate, and his future cultivation would require exponentially more energy. He had no idea where he would go to acquire more items containing spiritual energy.
Gurgle…
His stomach let out a rumble. Yun Su’s expression stiffened, and he touched his stomach. “I forgot. I haven’t reached the state of bigo (abstaining from grain) yet; I still need to feed this temple.”
Yun Su stood up helplessly, but his head swam with dizziness. He quickly leaned against the bed to steady himself before leaving the bedroom. He frowned, looking at the unchanged room. “Yun Ran?”
“Ranran?”
Calling out twice brought no response. Yun Su immediately walked to Yun Ran’s room and pushed open the door. The quilt on the bed was folded neatly, the items on the desk were in their original places, and even the doll Yun Ran usually loved to hug to sleep hadn’t moved. Yun Ran slept with that rabbit doll every single night.
Yun Su realized something was wrong. He immediately sensed the wisp of Nanming Li Fire he had left with Yun Ran; the protective amulet he had crafted had been triggered. In an instant, Yun Su’s expression darkened, turning exceptionally ugly.
He returned to his room to find his phone, only to discover it was out of battery and turned off. He quickly plugged in the charger and turned it on. As soon as the phone booted up, he saw over a dozen missed calls. Yun Su checked them almost all were from the hospital and Yun Ran’s teacher, with a few missed calls from An Ran and Jiang Biechen as well.
Without hesitation, Yun Su called Yun Ran’s teacher back. It rang for a few seconds before the other side answered.
“Hello, who is this?”
“Hello, Teacher Li, I am Yun Ran’s brother. I saw that you called me?”
“Oh, you’re Yun Ran’s brother! It’s like this: Yun Ran hasn’t been to school yesterday or today since leaving school the night before last, and she didn’t ask for a leave of absence. Has something happened?”
Yun Su’s grip on the phone tightened. There were no traces of Yun Ran having returned home; Yun Ran had disappeared.
Suppressing the worry and rage in his heart, he took a deep breath and kept his voice as steady as possible. “It’s nothing major. Yun Ran suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized, and I’ve been so busy taking care of her that I didn’t get around to asking for leave.”
Upon hearing this, Teacher Li was relieved. “I thought so! That child is usually so well-behaved; she always asks for leave when she’s sick. Since she didn’t show up, I was worried something might have happened. As long as she’s alright, it’s fine.”
“I apologize for the trouble, Teacher Li. I will definitely make sure to request leave for Yun Ran next time.”
He hung up the phone. Something had happened to Yun Ran, and Yun Su didn’t even need to guess that something had happened at the hospital as well. Although the protective charm had been triggered, the Nanming Li Fire had not automatically returned to his body, which meant that neither of them was in immediate danger of death. To Yun Su, this was the best news he could hope for at the moment.
A murderous aura erupted from Yun Su, causing the curtains in the room to sway without wind, while the table and chairs toppled to the ground with a loud crash. At that moment, Yun Su’s phone rang. Glancing down, he saw it was An Ran.
Answering the call, Yun Su didn’t wait for An Ran to speak. “An Ran, help me out look for my sister.”
An Ran immediately replied, “Master, don’t worry. Tell me when your sister went missing and what she looks like; I will have people look for her right away.”
“Two days ago. She went missing after school. I have a photo; I’ll send it to you right now.”
An Ran: “Understood. Don’t worry too much, Master; your sister will definitely be fine.”
“I know.” Yun Su ran a hand through his hair, exchanged a few more words with An Ran about Yun Ran, and then hung up the phone.
