- Chapter 18 - Wedding Night
The two women returned to the open-air banquet, where guests were mingling and toasting.
Nearly everyone present was a prominent figure, making it an excellent opportunity for networking. Fu Yunqing, ever composed, had already regained her composure, the flush on her ears having faded. She handled the situation with practiced ease.
Yu Yan, however, had no interest in such social niceties. She had long resolved to avoid the calculating, worldly air that permeated such gatherings. Let Yu Lan handle the company affairs however she pleased; Yu Yan only cared about inheriting the wealth and spending it lavishly each day. In fact, she had often fantasized about Yu Lan having two daughters, with an older sister who would inherit everything, including Yu Yan herself. This older sister would work tirelessly to earn money for Yu Yan to spend, allowing her to indulge in her indolence with a clear conscience.
As a child, Yu Yan’s greatest scientific aspiration had been figuring out how to convince Yu Lan to give her an older sister.
But these were just fantasies. For now, she had to smile and toast the guests with Fu Yunqing, starting with Fu Yunqing’s grandmother.
The grandmother was an elegant and gracious old woman whom Yu Yan adored. She reminded Yu Yan of her own grandmother—warm, approachable, and not at all strict. The grandmother had even thoughtfully replaced their wine with grape juice.
Grandma took Yu Yan’s hand and said, “You shouldn’t drink too much; it’s bad for your health, dear. I had the staff replace your wine with grape juice. No one will notice.”
Yu Yan smiled. “Grandma, you’re so thoughtful! I never drink anyway. I don’t even know how. I’m a good girl, so don’t worry.”
Just as she finished speaking, Yu Yan heard Fu Yunqing chuckle. Oh no, she thought, these super-rich families probably do background checks before arranged marriages, right? I go clubbing five nights a week sometimes! I’m doomed. Yu Yan felt a pang of guilt, but Grandma just smiled kindly, not calling her out. “Such a good girl,” Grandma said. “Sister Fu should learn from you.”
Fu Yunqing played along. “Yes, I should learn from her.”
“You two,” Grandma continued, “even though we elders arranged this, you must live well together.” Support each other, care for each other, and don’t be cold… Ah, I don’t think you two would be like that. You seem to get along so well, don’t you? All right, go on now.”
What a wonderful grandma, Yu Yan thought. Fu Yunqing is so lucky to have grown up with such gentle guidance, unlike me. Yu Yan sighed wistfully, feeling a pang of sadness.
But her attention was quickly diverted as Fu Yunqing led her around to meet her friends—all of whom, like Fu Yunqing herself, were such cool older sisters.
They were all so beautiful, and each radiated a unique charm. They kept calling Yu Yan “little sister, little sister.” Hello, sisters, Yu Yan said. Only she knew the thrill of saying those words.
The woman who caught Fu Yunqing’s bouquet earlier was named Xu Man, a stunning beauty with a relaxed, languid air. When asked why Fu Yunqing had given her the bouquet, she replied, “I have someone I like. Yunqing probably wants me to confess with these flowers, right?”
“Wow, really?” Yu Yan offered her sincere blessings. “Then I wish you success with your confession!”
Xu Man laughed, glancing at Fu Yunqing with feigned envy. “Yunqing’s little sister is so sweet.”
Master Yu was indeed sweet, and he knew it.
Toasting, posing for photos, and smiling politely, Yu Yan followed Fu Yunqing’s lead. She worked tirelessly to be the perfect, well-mannered, sensible, and energetic newlywed wife of the renowned Fu Yunqing. She never complained of fatigue, never slacked off, and never grumbled, fully committed to her role.
The white night here stretched until nearly ten o’clock, just as dawn was breaking in China on the other side of the world. Only then did the banquet finally end. The first thing Yu Yan did upon getting into the car was kick off her high heels and collapse into the seat with a deep sigh.
Fu Yunqing followed her into the car. Seeing her like this, her gaze softened. “Tired?” she asked gently.
“I’m exhausted,” Yu Yan sighed.
“You worked hard today,” Fu Yunqing said, sitting down and bending to move Yu Yan’s heels aside. “I saw how well you did.”
Yu Yan’s reaction was a beat slow. She realized Fu Yunqing was responding to her earlier remark, “I was so good. Didn’t you notice?” Her heart fluttered again. She opened her eyes with a soft “Mmm—” and threw herself into Fu Yunqing’s arms.
Fu Yunqing caught her steadily. Yu Yan was always affectionate and clingy, and Fu Yunqing had grown somewhat used to these intimate gestures. Following Yu Yan’s lead, she stroked the girl’s hair and said, “Go home and rest early.”
“Mmm— I’m sleeping until afternoon tomorrow.”
Fu Yunqing’s tone lifted slightly. “Okay.”
If Sister Fu is this caring right now, Yu Yan thought, would she agree to anything I ask? She wrapped her arms around Fu Yunqing’s waist and nestled quietly against her shoulder for a moment.
“Sister,” she murmured softly.
“Hmm?” Fu Yunqing lowered her gaze.
Yu Yan fell silent again.
What’s going on? Calling me “Sister” but not saying what she wants.
Fu Yunqing didn’t press the matter, seemingly accustomed to Yu Yan’s occasional “nonsense.”
“Are you tired too?” Yu Yan asked after a moment, pulling away from Fu Yunqing’s embrace and returning to her own seat.
Yu Yan had initially planned to nap against Fu Yunqing, but then she remembered how busy Fu Yunqing had been today, even more so than herself.
After a moment of silence, Fu Yunqing admitted, “A little.”
Yu Yan felt even more guilty. She quickly offered her shoulder and patted it. “Then rest against me for a while.”
Fu Yunqing’s lips curved slightly. “No need. We’ll be there soon.”
Yu Yan thought for a moment. “Then I’ll give you a massage when we get back. We’re sharing a room tonight, right? I’ll massage you after your shower.”
Fu Yunqing raised an eyebrow. “Do you even know how?”
“Of course! Just kneading your shoulders and tapping your back. It’ll feel good.”
Seeing Yu Yan’s enthusiastic expression, Fu Yunqing couldn’t help but wonder if she’d completely forgotten about the kiss she was owed, her mind entirely focused on the prospect of massaging Fu Yunqing. She’s such a gullible little thing, Fu Yunqing thought, so easily distracted.
Unable to resist, Fu Yunqing reached out and gently brushed a stray strand of hair from Yu Yan’s forehead.
“Alright,” Fu Yunqing said.
Yu Yan tilted her head, her beautiful eyes, framed by delicate makeup, shining brightly as she gazed up at Fu Yunqing, letting her touch her freely.
Does Sister Fu think I’m so naive and cute?
But Yu Yan was far from gullible.
Right now, she was thinking about very wonderful things.
She thought, The light boat has already passed ten thousand mountains. That damned wedding was finally over, and the rest of the time belonged to just the two of them. They would have their wedding night, a precious moment worth a thousand gold pieces. Fu Yunqing still owed her a kiss, and she was going to make sure she got it back.
Hmph, Fu Yunqing has fallen right into the tiger’s den!
Yu Yan’s gaze grew increasingly fervent, making Fu Yunqing feel uneasy. She realized she might have underestimated Yu Yan, who wasn’t just some naive child who would forget things the moment she turned her head.
After fixing Yu Yan’s hair, Fu Yunqing withdrew her hand and turned away, avoiding her gaze.
My wife is so reserved, Yu Yan thought.
The car soon arrived back at the estate. Yu Yan naturally followed Fu Yunqing into the bridal suite prepared for them by the estate’s housekeeper, Mrs. Dillon. It was a beautiful, spacious room with a luxurious, plush Western-style sofa that Yu Yan collapsed onto, exhausted.
Fu Yunqing couldn’t help but smile. “Let’s rest for a bit,” she said. “I’ll go take off my makeup first.”
“Okay,” Yu Yan replied, tilting her head to watch Fu Yunqing walk into the bathroom, her eyes curving into crescents.
Yu Yan lay sprawled on the sofa, sighing contentedly.
With all the day’s tasks completed, time stretched out slowly and leisurely. They had a long night ahead, and Fu Yunqing owed her a kiss.
How would they kiss later? A gentle peck, or a passionate French kiss? Would a French kiss be too much? Sister Fu might not be ready for that. But a simple peck seemed so boring. Yu Yan needed to think of something more interesting.
She racked her brain, digging through every experience she’d ever heard or seen, until finally, an idea struck her. She jumped up excitedly to find Fu Yunqing, but before she could take two steps, darkness suddenly enveloped her vision.
Yu Yan fainted.
